My name is Leanna Deeds, and I am blind. I have a bachelor's degree (学士学位) in journalism. However, my journalism career lasted ten months. I could not have a better job because I could not see. So when I was offered a full-time job as a secretary for the Office for Students with Disabilities at Portland Community College (PCC), I took it. However, I'm sure that my experience with higher education, and my understanding of how it works, was one of the reasons I was employed, and I know my college education has helped me over the years.
Technology has also helped me deal with difficulties. I learned to read with an optacon, an electronic reading device (装置) which allows blind people to read printed material.
I achieved a great deal in my career today through perseverance (坚持不懈) and hard work. I believe people with disabilities, above all, must learn the value of hard work because they must work harder at everything they do than other people.
I have a good attendance record at work. It has served me well. People with disabilities have fewer other duties in life because there are some things they can't do. So, once they have a job, they can go to work every day.
I have used initiative (主动性) at work to solve problems, especially my own. Since I have always worked with people, I collect information at work, and I use it to help them. I solve many small problems for people every day.
People with disabilities, and all people, should learn the system, respect it, and make it work well for them. I have done that all my life. As the years passed, I decided that continuing to work for PCC would be easier than starting over with another employer because I am known for what I can do.
Advice I would give to others with disabilities who are starting to plan their careers or look for employment: Always do your best. Take advantage of any opportunities that come your way. Use technology to help you. When you get a job, stick to it.
24. According to the text, Leanna Deeds _____.

A. All roads lead to Rome.
B. Wherever you are, you can succeed.
C. Work hard, try your best and stick to it.
D. However hard it is, you should never give up.

Lots of people like a good fright at Halloween. Yet, the most frightening thing of all about the night is that twice as many children are killed while out and about on Halloween compared to any other day of the year, according to a study by Safe Kids Worldwide. It can also be a worrying time for others, especially elderly people living alone. But many people think it's just harmless fun.
But is it harmless fun
Police forces across Britain are giving warnings about Halloween night. They are asking all those wishing to celebrate Halloween this year to respect those who don't want to join in.
Some forces, like West Mercia Police, have produced “Sorry, No Trick or Treat” posters which can be downloaded from their website, and put up in windows. They want people to send them to the old or anyone who may be frightened by ghosts knocking on their doors.
A spokesman said: “Children should not call on houses where the posters are put up, neither should they call on strangers, as this can put young people at risk and also make some house owners anxious, especially those who are elderly or living alone.”
The police want all trick or treaters to remember that disturbing other people or throwing objects at their homes or cars are all criminal offences (刑事罪). “What may start off as a bit of fun could end up with someone getting a criminal record,” they warn. “Parents may want to consider having a Halloween party at home, instead.”
Kent Police are warning young people never to go into the home of someone they don't know — and to remember not to frighten people.
Warwickshire Police are also warning that tricks may seem like harmless fun but can cause trouble to others. They say behaviour such as throwing eggs can quickly cross the line between being anti-social and causing criminal damage. This can result in fines of 2,500 for small offences.
28. The study made by Safe Kids Worldwide has found that _____.
A. kids are afraid of Halloween
B. Halloween brings people no fun
C. kids are involved in criminal offences
D. Halloween night puts some kids at risk
29. British police forces are making efforts to _____.

Just like a marching band entering the playing field before a game, popcorn (爆米花) is usually heard before it is seen. Kernels (玉米粒) are breaking apart uncontrollably, hitting against the cover of the pot with a loud noise. Popcorn is one of the most popular foods, and we can enjoy large amounts of it every year.
Popcorn was first raised and harvested by Cachise Indians in Mexico over three thousand years ago. By the time Europeans arrived in North America, many Native Americans were enjoying popcorn. In fact, at the first Thanksgiving celebration in Plymouth, Massachusetts, one high-ranking Native American brought a gift of popped corn in a deerskin bag. Popcorn was not just for eating; it was also used in jewelry, such as headdresses and necklaces. One difference between popcorn then and now is the popping methods. Early Native Americans would pierce (扎) the corncob with a sharp stick, coat the ear with oil, and lay it next to the fire. The kernels would pop while still attached to the ear.
Though the act of the kernel of corn breaking apart takes place in a second, the science behind the pop is not that simple. In order to understand this process, one must first understand the kernel itself. The kernel is simply a hard outer shell, which protects a soft, starchy (含淀粉的) center. The starch contains a small amount of water, and when the kernel is heated to about 200 degrees Celsius, the pressure from the steam within causes the kernel to pop. When this happens, the kernel increases forty times in size, and the result is a changed kernel, with the white, starchy center on the outside, and the hard shell on the inside. The remaining kernels that do not pop by the end of the heating cycle do not have enough water inside to build up necessary steam pressure.
32. The underlined sentence in the first paragraph describes _____.
A. the value of popcorn
B. the popularity of popcorn
C. the noise of popcorn popping
D. the relation between sports and popcorn
33. Paragraph 2 is mainly about _____.
A. the history of popcorn

A. Its outer shell. B. The water in it.
C. The starch in it. D. Its unusual shape.

选做题
I. 阅读理解
阅读下面短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
Researchers at Stanford University have developed a new material that can move heat out of buildings and into space. The researchers say the material can cool buildings even on hot days.
The cooling material is a very thin board with many layers that could be placed on a roof like solar panels (太阳能电池板). However, instead of turning sunlight into energy as solar panels do, the material turns heat into infrared radiation (红外辐射).
Shanhui Fan is an electrical engineering professor at Stanford University. He says that the panels have a layer of material that is like sand and they act like a mirror, taking heat out of buildings and reflecting (反射) the light from the sun. He also says both the heat and sunlight are sent 100 kilometers into outer space.
It's a structure that cools itself without electricity input, even under the sun. So, what it does is basically radiate heat to outer space and also reflect the sunlight so it doesn't get heated up by the sun. And the result is that the roof will have a temperature below surrounding air temperature by a large amount.
The panels are cool to the touch, even in the sun. Researchers say they can diminish the indoor temperature.
Mr. Fan says it is like having a window into space. He says the heat is sent directly into space without warming the air.
He says buildings in developing countries that do not have electricity or air conditioning could use the panels.
The Stanford researchers described their technology in the science publication Nature. They say the main problem is creating real cooling systems using the high-tech panels. They say it may be possible to develop a cooling spray (喷雾) that could be used on existing solid structures. The researchers believe the cooling spray technology could be developed in the next three to five years. They say as much as 15 percent of the energy used in the United States is spent providing power to air conditioning systems.
1. According to the text, the cooling material _____.
A. is a kind of thick glass
B. is made of solar panels
C. can send heat into space
D. can turn sunlight into energy

A. have a layer of sand
B. turn sunlight into electricity
C. will absorb heat from the sun
D. reflect sunlight and won't get heated up
3. The underlined word “diminish” in Paragraph 5 can be replaced by _____.
A. reduce B. control
C. change D. measure
4. What does the last paragraph mainly discuss
A. The various uses of cooling materials.
B. The characteristics of cooling systems.
C. The main problems with cooling technology.
D. The future development of cooling technology.

On this day, children cut faces in the pumpkins and put a burning candle inside. At night, they put on strange masks and frightening costumes and carry bags from house to house to ask for candy. Every time they come to a new house, they say, “Trick or treat!” The grown-ups put some candy in their bags.
