阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
[A]
Hannah Levine decided she wanted to give hugs to all of the children and families in need at local hospitals.
Because she couldn't give them one by one, Levine, then a sixth-grader, decided she would use her talents to do the next best thing. She began to knit (编织) hats, scarves, and blankets (毛毯) for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House at Stanford. Her creations also went to Bundle of Joy, a program that provides newborn baby items (物品) for families in need, and to Knitting Pals by the Bay, a local organization that provides hand-knitted caps to cancer patients.
“I love to knit, and I thought it would be a great idea to make all these handmade items for kids and adults who need them. It would be like a hug for them,” Levine explained.
Levine started the project about a year ago. “I think it's just really fun to do, and it keeps me busy,” said Levine, now 13.
Once she got started, Levine realized that her project could be much bigger than the goods she was able to produce with just her own two hands. So she sent emails to her school and communities (社区), asking for knitted donations (捐赠物) to the project she named “Hannah's Warm Hugs”. She also posted advertisements at Starbucks and other locations in her area. The warm goods began to gush in.
“It was amazing; more strangers than people she knew started dropping donations at our door,” said Levine's mother, Laura Levine. “We ended up with this huge box of items she was donating.”
The knitted items numbered in the hundreds. Levine made her first round of donations around Hanukkah (an eight-day Jewish holiday in November or December) and later received thank-you letters from the organizations. Levine is still knitting, and she said the project will continue.
“It has turned into a bigger thing than she had thought,” her mom said. “It made her feel pretty good; it made us feel pretty good.”

The recent government announcement of an increase in university fees (费用) for the coming school year has angered young people planning to go to university. In addition, it has caused some of them quite understandably to question the value of a university education.
In an ideal (理想的) world, university education would be free and open to all. However in most western countries, students do contribute to the cost of going to university, and most accept that they should pay something towards the benefits they receive from a university education. These benefits include the opportunity to get good jobs in the future, and this course leads to higher pay and a more comfortable lifestyle.
But is it that simple It's true that university graduates may get better jobs, but this clearly means that they will then pay higher taxes (税), which contribute to the economy of the whole country. So, isn't adding further increases to university fees in effect asking students to pay twice Many students already have to take out loans (贷款) to pay for general living costs. This can result in them getting heavily into debt (债务). A report shows that the average student debt already runs into thousands of pounds. Furthermore, many students have to depend on their parents to pay for their education.
On the other hand, the recent increase in university fees has come at the wrong time. It will discourage some students from going to university because they simply cannot afford it. Already many young people are questioning the value of a university education. Everyone seems to have a degree these days, they say, so when they graduate from university, they cannot be sure they will get a well-paid job. Therefore the decision to raise university fees will almost certainly affect the student intake, leading to a drop in numbers.
The suggested increase in fees is unfair to students. Many are already having problems dealing with debt. There's nothing wrong with asking students to contribute to the costs of a university education, but the suggested increase is too much. We should call on the Government to reconsider their decision or risk losing a generation of educated young people.
29. Paragraph 2 is mainly about _____.
A. education in western countries
B. why university fees have increased
C. the benefits of a university education
D. how to get a good university education
30. We learn from Paragraph 3 that _____.
A. many parents refuse to pay for students' education
B. many students are deeply in debt due to university fees
C. university graduates contribute the most to the economy
D. university graduates pay twice as much tax as other people
31. If the university fees are increased, _____.
A. more students will want to get a university education
B. the Government will provide support to poor students
C. students may wonder if it's worth going to university
D. the Government will reduce the living costs of students
32. What is the author's attitude toward the increase in university fees
A. Encouraging.
B. Unconcerned.
C. Optimistic.
D. Unfavorable.

Most people think Thanksgiving dinner is incomplete without mashed potatoes (土豆泥), cranberry sauce (蔓越橘酱), and pumpkin pie (南瓜派). It might surprise you to learn that not one of those foods was served during the 1621 celebration we think of as “The First Thanksgiving.”
In fact, the event itself was not even a Thanksgiving observation. Instead, to the English colonists, it was a harvest (收获) celebration.
In 1620, 102 English men, women, and children crossed the Atlantic to begin a new life. They landed in what we now call Massachusetts. The English chose a site that had been a native village, which they renamed New Plymouth.
The first winter was deadly. Arriving later than planned, the English were forced to build houses during the icy winter weather. Soon sickness spread among them, and half of them died. Fortunately, the illnesses ended by springtime. Living conditions improved as some of the houses were finished and the weather warmed. Gardens and the first crops were planted.
Governor William Bradford later wrote, “They began to gather in the small harvest they had, and to fit up their houses against winter.”
Early in the 1621 celebration, Massasoit, a native leader, and ninety native men visited New Plymouth. Some historians believe that the noise from the English hunting party attracted their attention. Following the English custom, the colonial leaders may have invited Massasoit and his advisors to join them at a “high table,” where the best foods were served. There would have been important business for the leaders to discuss.
It took a lot of work to pull off such a big event. But the combination of feasting (盛宴) and “entertainments” must have made those days enjoyable. There may have been singing, dancing, and games for everyone.
For three days, these two different cultures feasted and visited. Though they didn't speak a common language, they likely enjoyed the time spent together — sharing one another's company in that year's special celebration of plenty.
33. The first winter for the English colonists was _____.
A. rather warm
B. long and boring
C. extremely difficult
D. busy but comfortable
34. What do we know about the 1621 celebration
A. It lasted for a couple of weeks.

D. It was enjoyed by the English colonists and some natives.
35. What's the main idea of the text
A. The first feast in history.
B. The origin of Thanksgiving.
C. How the English colonists survived.

How strong are you
That is a difficult question to answer, whether you are a man or a woman. But, really, I want to ask ... how do you define (定义) your strength How do you know your limits When pushed, we often discover that we are much stronger than we think.
36
Strength is not always just about physical strength. Rather, it's about willpower, discipline and drive. 37 I know some people who are intelligent, but they get very little done in their jobs. And I know others who find work very difficult, but are able to move mountains by their hard work. They have inner (内在的) strength.
Limiting yourself
What I have observed is that most people limit themselves. They limit their output according to how limited they imagine their abilities and strengths to be. Sometimes these limits are based on past experiences. Sometimes they are based on what they think their abilities are. 38
Pushing it ...
Many people are working out, but nowhere near as much as they could.
39 Pushing yourself is what it takes to increase your limits. In the gym, bodybuilders discovered this long ago.
But, this is also true when it comes to inner strength.
Want to test your limits Push yourself. Test your limits to see if they are simply what you imagine them to be. Make sure your goals are slightly beyond what you think can be achieved.
You are stronger than you think
Most people underestimate (低估) their strength. As you go through your day, test your limits. Push yourself to find your true limits and define your strength. 40
A. Physical ability
B. What is strength
C. The same applies to daily life.
D. It's about the ability to get things done.
E. Sometimes these limits are based on nothing.
F. If you want to be stronger, you have to push yourself.
G. When you discover how much you've really got, you may surprise even yourself.

选做题
There may be few trees in the desert to offer shelter from the burning sun but the sociable weaver bird doesn't let that stop it from building huge nests to house hundreds of birds.
The structures are built around telephone poles (电线杆) in the dry lands of the South African Kalahari Desert using grass and small branches and can weigh up to one ton.
Photographer Dillon Marsh decided to record the habitats (栖息地) constructed by the birds to show how they make good use of the man-made poles in the Kalahari Desert.
Mr Marsh, from Cape Town, says, “I had seen these nests as a child while on a holiday with my family and their huge size had impressed me. I had started to develop an interest in the relationship between people and the environment, and these nests struck me as the perfect subject matter.
“I spent three days exploring the area around the town of Upington in South Africa which forms part of the Kalahari Desert.
“I used a 4×5 view camera to take the photographs. This was the first time I had used such a camera, so I was very happy to get the results that I did.”
The nests are made up of complex structures with a network of rooms within. The outer rooms offer shade (荫凉) during the daytime and stay around 8℃ while the inner rooms prevent heat from escaping at night and keep the birds warm.
Viewed from below, the nests have a honeycomb-like (蜂窝状) structure with each entrance measuring about 3 inches wide and can be up to 10 inches long. Sharp sticks may be placed to prevent natural enemies such as snakes from entering.
Each room houses a pair of weaver birds and often their children and the larger nests can contain more than a hundred birds at a time. Large nests can remain active across several generations (代), sometimes over a hundred years.
In the Kalahari Desert, where water is highly limited, the sociable weaver bird gets all of its water from a diet of insects. They also feed on seed and other plant products.
