“I run a charity called Extra Life where I play video games to help raise money for kids,” he said. “Ariana happened to be sitting next to me when a video was playing, showing a little girl who was bald(秃头的), lying in a hospital bed with tubes(管子) in her.” When their daughter got curious, Smith and his wife Crystal explained how medicine was what made the child in the video lose her hair.
“Without a second thought, Ariana said, ‘She can have some of my hair,'” Smith said. “That's when my wife told me that there are many organizations that we could donate it to.” The Smiths chose “Locks of Love” to send Ariana's generous gift to a child with medical hair loss.
A week later, Ariana was taken to the family hairdresser where 10 inches was cut from her hair.
“It was her first haircut,” Smith told ABC News. “She can be so selfless like that. On October 26, 2013, Darrell Wallace Jr., 20, was the first to cross the finish line in NASCAR's Camping World Truck Series Kroger 200, at Martinsville Speedway, in Virginia. The win made Wallace the second African-American driver in the history of NASCAR to win a race at the sport's top level.
“We congratulate Darrell Wallace Jr. on his first national series victory, one that will be remembered as a remarkable (不同寻常的) moment in our sport's history,” said Brian France, NASCAR chairman and CEO. “Darrell's success, following fellow NASCAR Drive for Diversity graduate Kyle Larson's win earlier this season, is indicative (表明) of a youth and multicultural movement that is a good sign for NASCAR's future growth.”
Darrell Wallace Jr. was born October 8, 1993, in Mobile, Alabama. He got his start in NASCAR through the organization's Drive for Diversity program. It was created in 2004 to attract more women and nonwhite drivers and crew members to NASCAR events.
Before Wallace's 2013 win, the only other black driver to win at NASCAR was Wendell Scott, in 1963. Unlike Wallace, however, Scott was not allowed to celebrate in the victory lane. Scott's sons, Wendell Scott Jr. and Franklin Scott, were in the stands when Wallace won in 2013. They say their father, who died in 1990, would be proud of Wallace's achievement. “When the checkered flag (赛车终点挥动的黑白方格旗) dropped, I heard a loud sound from heaven,” Franklin Scott said after the race.
Only a couple of years out of high school himself, Wallace offered advice to a group of students before his historic win. “Find something you love to do in life,” he told them. “If you don't love it, find something else. Work hard for what you love.”
28. Why did Brian France regard Wallace's win as a remarkable moment
A. Because he set a new world record for NASCAR.
B. Because he was the youngest driver to win at NASCAR.
C. Because he successfully invited more nonwhite drivers to NASCAR.
D. Because he was the first black driver to win at NASCAR in 50 years.
29. What can we learn about the Drive for Diversity program
A. It is developing slowly.
B. It has a very long history.
C. It was set up by Wendell Scott.
D. It aims to popularize NASCAR events.
30. After Wallace won the race, he was allowed to _____.
A. compete with Kyle Larson
B. celebrate in the victory lane
C. continue to study in high school
D. join the Drive for Diversity program
31. What played an important role in his success according to Wallace
A. Luck. B. Hope.
C. Interest. D. Courage.

A month before turning 60, Helen White received her master's degree (硕士学位) in sport management at George Washington University, and now teaches basketball and organizes programs and competitions for older adults. “I wanted to change the image of older adults by getting them to move and enjoy the power of play. The degree opened opportunities for me to do that,” said Ms. White, who had been a manager of information services.
For many, a traditional retirementof babysitting grandchildren, golfing and relaxing on the beach is passé. Older people today approach work as an important part of a retirement lifestyle, planning ahead and adding skills even before leaving their current jobs.
By 2030, the number of Americans 65 and older will grow to 72 million, up from 40.2 million in 2010, according to the United States Census Bureau. To date, many colleges and universities have paid little attention to the educational needs of this population. “It makes no sense, however, to have an educational system that ends in the 20s when people are likely to be working into their 80s,” said Laura L. Carstensen, founding director of the Stanford Center on Longevity. “We need to rethink these things.”
But now some state universities are starting to offer programs to older students. California's 23 state universities offer tuition-free (免学费的) classes in their Over 60 Program, and in Texas, public colleges and universities have tuition-reduction programs for students 55 or older. Pennsylvania State University's Go-60 program offers tuition-free courses to people who are at least 60 and retired or working less than half time.
One-year adult education programs aimed at professionals are also on the increase. The first class of 24 students began their studies last December at the Stanford Distinguished Careers Institute. One of the Stanford participants was Jere Brooks King, who took early retirement from Cisco Systems in November 2011 at age 55. “Who could refuse the opportunity to explore and learn at Stanford University while you reimagine your next stage in life ” she said.
32. Why did Ms. White decide to get a master's degree
A. To increase her income.
B. To take part in competitions.
C. To study information services.
D. To improve her life after retirement.
33. The underlined word “passé” in Paragraph 2 probably means _____.
A. out of date B. of great value
C. beyond question D. under discussion
34. Carstensen hopes that the educational system will _____.
A. pay more attention to young people's needs
B. offer more opportunities to older people
C. encourage the 20s to work into their 80s
D. try to teach more basic life skills
35. According to the last paragraph, we can learn that Jere Brooks King _____.
A. loved the education program very much
B. was uncertain of her next stage of life
C. doubted the educational opportunities
D. was glad about her early retirement

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
When Danny Wallace, 26, got bored, he sent off an ad reading simply: “Join Me. Send a passport photo!” A year and a half later, his east London flat is the headquarters (总部) for a global Internet-based club whose members do an act of kindness for strangers every Friday.
36 If you see someone struggling(挣扎) with something, part of your brain goes: “I want to help”. But the trained part of the brain says: “They will think you are mad or going to mug (抢劫) them”, so you walk away.
37 For example, I'm usually out on a Friday so I go for one of the standard acts — the unexpected cup of coffee. You might be sitting in a cafe and see an old man in the corner drinking coffee or tea. Then you walk up with another cup of whatever he is drinking, and say: “I've bought you a coffee” and walk away. 38 There can be some suspicion (猜疑), but I think that was mostly in the early days when I didn't know how to do it properly. I would walk up quite nervously like I was doing something wrong and I didn't know when to leave. Later I discovered that you have to walk up with confidence and humor and not “get in their faces”. 39 It's hit-and-run kindness. And there is no point in doing it half-heartedly. 40
A. You say: “This is for you”, then you go.
B. You've got to do it because you really mean it.
C. It now has about 3,000 members around the world.
D. It's a pleasure to see the look of surprise on his face.
E. Join Me is about giving you an excuse to do something.
F. This is why Danny Wallace usually goes out on Fridays.
G. It's not common for people in London to talk to strangers.

Technology is changing the way that many students are learning in school. It's also changing the way that information about students is collected and stored.
Schools have always kept track of information about students such as test scores, number of absences, behavior, and school-wide graduation rates(率). But new technology is making it easier for schools to collect more detailed data about students. Schools around the country are making use of digital tools such as homework sites and apps that track student progress in subjects. Schools can also monitor and track how students behave in class. Much of this data is collected and stored by the technology companies that create the programs, and not by the schools themselves.
Supporters of these digital programs say that they enable teachers and schools to identify areas in which students need help and that the programs make it easier for teachers to plan lessons more easily.
But some parents and educators are concerned that the programs may not protect students' privacy (隐私). They worry that information about their children is being collected and stored without their knowledge, and could possibly be sold to other companies. “Schools are handing out student data to outside vendors (销售商) without parents knowing about it,” Leonie Haimson, co-chairwoman of a group called the Parent Coalition for Student Privacy, told TFK.“We don't know what vendors are going to do with this data and how long they are going to store it for, and that's a concern.”
At TFK, we promise to protect students' privacy, which is why the TIME FOR KIDS Classroom App does not collect personal information on students. Teachers control student information and assign student IDs and classroom passwords. All the information is cleared at the end of the school year.
The government is taking steps to protect students' privacy. Many states, including New York and Virginia, now have laws that limit the sharing of student data with companies. President Barack Obama recently announced new student digital-privacy legislation (立法), which prohibits companies that work with schools from using student information for marketing or advertising purposes.

Scientists have never known for sure whether dinosaurs were warm-blooded animals, like mammals(哺乳动物) and birds, or cold-blooded, like reptiles(爬行动物) and fish. A recent study shows that in fact, many dinosaurs might not have belonged to either category but instead have fallen somewhere in the middle.
Warm-blooded animals have bodies that are able to make their own heat. Their body temperatures stay about the same whether it is hot or cold outside. Cold-blooded animals cannot make their own heat, so their body temperatures depend on how warm the outside temperature is. Warm-blooded animals have much more active lifestyles than cold-blooded ones.
When scientists first discovered the bones of ancient dinosaurs in the 1800s, they were sure the huge creatures must have been slow. But as scientists found more bones of smaller, quicker dinosaurs, like Velociraptor, they realized that the creatures may have been much more active than they had thought.
A team of biologists began to examine. They knew that warm-blooded animals grow faster than cold-blooded ones. The researchers realized they could determine whether a dinosaur had been warm- or cold-blooded by finding its growth rate.
The scientists examined the growth rings in bones from 21 different dinosaur species. The width of these growth rings showed how much the dinosaurs grew each year, much like the rings in a tree trunk do.
“Our results showed that dinosaurs had growth rates that were actually not characteristic(典型的) of warm-blooded or cold-blooded animals,” said Brian Enquist, a scientist on the research team. “They did not act like mammals or birds, nor did they act like reptiles or fish.” Instead, dinosaurs fell somewhere in between. Scientists call these middle-of-the-road creatures “mesotherms.”
Being mesotherms gave dinosaurs several advantages. They were faster and stronger than reptiles that had to rely on the sun for warmth. Being somewhat cold-blooded had its benefits too. Cold-blooded animals burn energy more slowly. So they need much less food to live than warm-blooded animals. “It is doubtful that a lion the size of T. rex could eat enough to survive,” explains John Grady, another biologist on the research team. By being mesothermic, the dinosaurs could be both fast and big.
6. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The advantages of cold-blooded animals.
B. The disadvantages of warm-blooded animals.
C. The differences between warm- and cold-blooded animals.
D. The advantages of both warm- and cold-blooded animals.
