My 16-year-old son, Anton, had gone to the local swimming hole. Most of the kids swim there, and there are plenty of rocks for them to use as safe harbors, so I had no fears for his safety.
Still, the firefighter’s first words “You need to come up here to the Stillwater River” made me catch my breath, and his follow-up words gave me relief: “Your son is OK.”
When I got to the river, I immediately saw the fire-truck, ambulance and Anton, wrapped with a towel about his shoulders, sitting quietly on a low platform of the fire engine.
I hurried over to him. “You OK?” I asked.
“Yeah,” was all he said. But my eyes begged for an explanation, I didn’t get it from my son, however, who tends to play his cards close to his vest.
The story was this: A woman was being swept under water. Hearing the cries, Anton and his friend Tyler, without hesitation, swam out to her, and brought her safely to shore.
In an age in which the word “hero” is broadcast with abandon and seemingly applied to anyone who makes it through the day, I realized the real thing in my son. The teens are stubborn and self-centered, but that didn’t mean they have no desire to do good.
Still shocked by my son’s daring, I drove him home. Along the way, I tried to dig out some more information from him, but he had precious little to say. The only words he said were, “What’s for supper?”
I spent some time alone that evening, thinking about the tragedy that might have been. The next morning, when Anton got up, I half expected him to tell me the story. But all he did was toast some bread, pull himself together, and head for the door to s tart a new day. Watching from the window, I was reminded that still water often runs deep.
21. Why did the mother allow her son to swim there?
A. He was an excellent swimmer. B. The water of the river is shallow.
C. He was old enough to swim. D. The rocks can be of help if there’s danger.
22. What does the underlined part “who tends to play his cards close to his vest” probably mean?
A. Anton is a boy fond of swimming with other kids.
B. Anton is unwilling to tell others what he thinks.
C. Anton always has a desire to help others.
D. Anton seldom changes his mind.
23. What might be the best title for the passage?
A. My Son, My Hero. B. Anton, A Silent Boy
C. A Good Deed D. A Proud Mother

There have been big changes in the attitudes of most parents over the last few years. Physical punishment is firbidden in schools in most countries, and in many countries, there are moves to ban all physical punishment of children even at home. However, many parents still believe that they have the right to use some physical punishments to deal with certain misbehavior at certain ages.
It’s easy to find reasons to allow some physical punishments. One issue (问题) is that many parents find it very difficult to abandon physical punishment completely. Parents argue that this was the way they were brought up and that it didn’t do any harm to them. They believe that for the child’s sake they have the right to discipline (管教) the child in any way they consider fit, including using some physical punishments. The other one is that physical punishment can be quick and effective. It is not much use reasoning with a screaming child in the supermarket.
However, there are several reasons why we should stop using physical punishment. One point is that most parents are not trained to deal with misbehaving children. They don’t have enough resources or choices to handle the situation. As a result, they immediately react by hitting the child even if there are other solutions to the problem. Another point is that unless people are challenged or forced to change their belief, they may keep following negative habits. An example is seat belt use — now most people wear seat belts without thinking, while years ago the idea of using seat belts was strange to most people. In the same way, forbidding physical punishment will force people to change their habits.
In a word, parents have to change some of their belief and ideas about how children should be raised. It is possible to avoid the use of physical force, and doing so will help us move closer to the dream of removing violence from our society.
32. According to the first paragraph, many parents think that ________.
A. they are free to use physical punishment on their children
B. most of the children behave badly in their daily life
C. they have changed their attitudes towards their children
D. physical punishment is effective to educate their children
33. Why won’t many parents give up physical punishment?
A. Because they are disappointed with their children
B. Because they were brought up just in the same way
C. Because they don’t want to hurt their children badly
D. Because they don’t know what to do with their children
34. Why does the author give the example of using seat belts?
A. To show most people are used to wearing seat belts.
B. To show it’s not difficult to change some negative habits.
C. To show seat belts are really very necessary and useful.
D. To show people won’t change their old habits unless forced.
35. What’s the main purpose of the author in writing this passage?
A. To talk about a ban (禁令) on using physical punishment.
B. To tell us we should educate our children in other ways.
C. To advise parents to give up using physical punishment.
D. To suggest physical punishment should be used at home.

Dear Peter,
Having known that you will come to China with your parents to attend a cultural exchange activity, as a native, I warmly welcome you to my hometown. Nanyang. The following is a brief introduction of it.
Located in the southwest of Henan province, it is known as a treasure land in Central China, which enjoys a pleasant climate with four distinct seasons. Besides, it covers an area of over 20 thousand square kilometers and has a large population of more than 10 million people. What’s more, Nanyang is one of the best attractions with a number of places of interest, such as the Wuhou Temple and Xixia Dinosaur Relics Park of China. What impresses me most is its Dushan jade and Chinese roses. Being the water source of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, Nanyang attracts people from all over the world. I hope that you will enjoy yourselves in here.
Looking forward to your early reply. May you have fun in Nanyang!
Yours,
Li Hua
