A
It is hard to believe that a poor Italian boy who had few lesson in school could find a new land three thousand miles from his home. Yet, the world knows that the discovery of America was made by Christopher Columbus.
Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy, about 1450. He grew up by the sea. He spent most of his time watching ships come in from distant places. He loved to smell the sea air; he listened to the music of waves rolling upon the shore. And he dreamed of one day sailing to faraway places in his own ship.
His first voyage was on a ship that sailed around the Mediterranean Sea and along the coasts of Europe and Africa. He drew maps of the places he went to, and he began to wonder about the shape of the earth on which he lived.
Columbus had read the stories of Marco Polo’s travels to the East; he also believed great riches would be found there. But Polo, and men after him, always traveled by land to reach the East. ‘I’m sure a ship is faster, so I shall go to the East by sailing West,” he decided, “Then I can prove that the earth is really round!” Living in Portugal at the time, he told the King of Portugal about his plan. But king John only laughed at him. “Silly man,” he said, “Don’t you know that the earth is flat? Why, you and your ships will fall off the edge if you go far away from land.
But Columbus did not give up. He studied more books and maps. He asked for help from England and France, for he had no money.
Then he went to King Ferdinand and Queen Israeli of Spain. It took many years to make them understand, but at last they said yes to his wild plan! On August 3, 1492, three small Spanish ships—the Pinta, the Nina, and the Santa Maria —set out westward across the Atlantic Ocean. Columbus was sure that land was quite near; his band of about a hundred men was much less certain. Over two month had passed when they noticed birds flying over their heads. A few days later, on October 12, someone saw land! The ships stopped at an island that Columbus named San Salvador. Then they went farther and found the island of Cuba and Haiti.
The men expected to find gold and rich treasures, but instead they saw beautiful green land and poor people with dark skins and painted faces. Columbus called them Indians, because he thought he had discovered the islands east of India. But India was really thousands of miles away. Columbus returned to Spain with good news. He reported all that he had seen, and promised to bring back riches to the king and queen.【来源:21·世纪·教育·网】
He sailed west three more times, discovering the islands of Puerto Rico and Jamaica. He also reached the coast of South America. But in all his travels Christopher Columbus never found the rich cities of China that Marco Polo described. He died a poor man in 1506, not knowing that he had discovered the New World of the West.

Every country has its heroes. The heroes are the people the nation and especially the young people admire. If you get a list of the heroes of a nation, it will tell you the potential(潜力)of that nation.
Today in America, if you ask the high school students to list their heroes, their choice would probably fall into three groups. The first group of heroes would be the rock stars—the people connected with rock music. There is no doubt that such people do have talent(天才)but one wonders if one should hold up rock stars as a model. The rock stars too often are mixed with drugs and their personal life is not all that good. The rock stars are rich and wear the latest fashion styles. However, one should seek more in a hero than such things as money and good clothes.
A second type of hero for the American youth is the sports star. Again you have a person who has a great ability in one area-sports. However, too often the personal life of the sports star is a bit of a disorder. Too frequently drugs and drinking are a part of life of the sports star.
A third type of hero is the TV or movie star. This person may have lots of acting talent and is quite handsome. However, the personal life of too many actors is quite sad and they should not be held up as a model of young people. Today, the rock star, the athlete, and the actor all have become the models of the youth in America. Really, do you hear a young person say that his hero is a doctor, a teacher, or a scientist? These people are not rich and do not wear fashionable clothes. However, they are talented people who work hard to make the world a better place for everyone.
What is really sad is that the young try to imitate(模仿) their heroes. They like to wear the same clothes and follow their styles. If the heroes of today for the American young people are limited only to rock stars, athletes and actors, the future does not look too bright.
5. The last sentence of the first paragraph implies that__________.
A. if a nation has a lot of heroes, it will be strong
B. heroes of a nation will make the nation itself
C. what the people admire will make the future of the nation
D. if you want to be a hero, you must admire the hero
6. From the passage, we know that the heroes the American youth admire are those__________.
A. who are not bright but are good-looking
B. who are rich but are strict with themselves
C. who are talented for some area but lead an improper life21教育网
D. who are perfect in all areas
7. According to the writer, people should admire those__________.21cnjy.com
A. who are rich and wear the latest fashion clothes2-1-c-n-j-y
B. who can express people’s feelings
C. whose personal life is good
D. who work for the interests of the people

At the Russia’s most successful gymnast, she is tall and graceful --- Svetlana Khorkina is more than a champion, she is a star. 21教育名师原创作品
Khorkina was born on January 19, 1979, in Belgorod. She was introduced to gymnastics by her mother when she was only four years old. When asked how to start her gymnastics career, she smiled:“As a child, I was very picky (挑剔) with my food. My mother hoped that if she put me into gymnastics, I would start eating breakfast, an after having spent a lot of energy in the gym.”
Her coach wanted her to train in rhythmic gymnastics because of body type, but Khorkina insisted on learning artistic gymnastics. Boris Pilkin was the only coach throughout her career. Then her height, normally considered a negative (消极的) in gymnastics, became a positive.
For the past ten years, Khorkina also did much for the Russian gymnastics team. Many times she had to take part in competitions with wound, and she managed to win!
Please remember the period when Khorkina bravely entered the world of show business, and had even more courage to enter the world of theater. She was successful there! She was supposed to leave gymnastics after becoming a famous person, but she did not! “You should perform for us!” said her coach and fans, as they understand that there were no such strong gymnastics as Khorkina in the Russian team.
In 2004, Khorkina, 25 years old, announced that she would retire after the Athens Olympics. She wanted to end her gymnastics career with a gold medal, so she went to Athens. But the result disappointed her, she gained only a silver on individual all-around and a bronze on team. “Actually, I feel I’m able to compete still, but I believe it’s time for me to finish, as any other woman does, I’d like to have a family. I’d like to have kids. I’d like to be loved.” Khorkina said. She is an artist in a sport that doesn’t reward artistry anymore, old in a sport that worships youth. So it’s time for her to leave.
On August 19, 2004, she played the artist one final time. When asked to name his favorite gymnast, Olympic chairman Togge replied, “Khorkina. She’s a real woman.”
9. Which of the following is true about Khorkina’s body type?
It was perfect for gymnastics.
It was a disadvantage but she turned it into an advantage.
It was usually thought unsuitable for gymnastics.
It was difficult to achieve greatly with such a body type.
10. Khorkina tried all of the following careers except ______.
A. sports B. show business C. the world of theater D. teaching Khorkina
11. Which of the following can describe Khorkina’s feelings at the Athens Olympics?

__16__Men lie; women lie. Husbands lie, friends lie, wives lie, and believe it or not, your mother might lie. A recent study showed that 91% of all people lie on a regular basis, and people tell at least 13 major lies a week.21世纪教育网版权所有
Dr. Robert G. Newby, a professor of sociology, believes that men are more likely to tell lies than women. “Men are more concerned about how they present theselves in public, the impression they make on people and things like that,” he says. “Men are always trying to impress people in the work and want to make sure that their presentation of self is one that makes them look good.__17__.”
Women, on the other hand, Dr. Newby believes, are more private people and their relationship tends to be more interpersonal(人际的), as opposed to having to put on a public face. Women are more vulnerable and they are not as likely to try to pull the wool over someone’s eyes like men.
Psychotherapist Vesta Callender also agrees that men and women do lie differently. “__18__. They plan better,” Callender notes. “They create a history around the lie, and they try to project(规划)into the future what might happen if the lie is detected(侦探). With a woman, a lie has a beginning, a middle and an end. ”Callender believes that men tend to lie for the moment or to get out of a situation.__19__.
Dr. Elmore stresses(强调)that while it is true that most people lie from time to time, one should be truthful.
“__20__. Everything that is true does not need to be said, but everything said needs to be true.” he says.
