“In only six days I lost seven pounds of weight. ”
“Two full inches in the first three days!”
These are the kinds of statements used in magazine, newspaper, radio and television ads, promising new shapes and new looks to those who buy the medicine or the device. The promoters of products say they can shape the legs, slim the face, smooth wrinkles, or in some other way to add to beauty or desirability.
Often such products are nothing more than moneymaking things for their promoters. The results they produce are questionable, and some are dangerous to health.
To understand how these products can be legally
promoted to the public, it is necessary to understand something of the laws covering their regulation. If the product is a drug, FDA (Food and Drug Administration)can require proof (证明)under the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act that is safe and effective before it is put on the market. But if the product is a device, FDA has no authority to require premarketing proof of safety or effectiveness. If a product already on the market is a danger to health, FDA can request the producer or distributor to remove it from the market voluntarily, or it can take legal action, including seizure(查封)of the product.
One notable case a few years ago involved an electrical device called the Relaxacisor, which had been sold for reducing the waistline. The Relaxacisor produced electrical shocks to the body through contact pads. FDA took legal action against the distributor to stop the sale of the device on the grounds that it was dangerous to health and life.
Obviously, most of the devices on the market have never been the subject of court proceedings(法律诉讼), and new devices appear continually. Before buying, it is up to the consumer to judge the safety or effectiveness of such items.
41. It can be inferred that the ads mentioned in the text are ___.
A. objective B. costly
C. unreliable D. illegal
42. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A. The court is in charge of removing dangerous products.
B. New products are more likely to be questionable.
C. The production of a device must be approved by FDA.
D. The promoters usually just care about profits.
43. FDA can ask for the proof of safety and effectiveness of a product____.
A. if it is a drug
B. if it is a device
C. if its consumers make complaints
D. if its distributors challenge FDA's authority
44. The Relaxacisor is mentioned as ___.
A. a product which was designed to produce electricity
B. a product whose distributor was involved in a legal case
C. a successful advertisement of a beauty product
D. an example of a quality beauty product
45. The author intends to ____.
A. make consumers aware of the promoters’ false promises
B. show the weakness of the law on product safety
C. give advice on how to keep young and beautiful
D. introduce the organization of FDA
C
I read an article in my local paper a while ago, and it really stuck with me. There was a couple in my neighbourhood whose house had been badly damaged in a hail(冰雹)storm we had earlier in the year. I remember it well and so did my car, as there were hailstones almost the size of baseballs.
Anyway I read this article a few months after the storm and learnt that this couple didn’t have insurance and had just bought their first home which they had been saving up for five years. They were a fairly young couple and unfortunately their home was badly damaged by the hail. Most of their house had been damaged, not only by the hail but also by a tree which had fallen on their house and destroyed a section of it. They didn’t have money to repair the house because all their money was used to buy the place, and they couldn’t move, as they couldn’t afford it.
Then one day just when they were thinking nothing would get better, they came home from work and found an envelope in their mail box. When they opened it they found$100 with a message that said, “I have been driving past your house on my way to work for the last month, and you look like you need this more than I do, best of luck. ”
No name was left, and it was simply a random act of kindness.
This had led them to write to the local paper thanking the stranger. The article later caught the eye of some other companies who volunteered to cover the costs of repairs to the couple’s home. The story ended with the couple saying that they were really grateful and they would try to share the kindness with their neighbors, and they would keep an eye out
for their random hero.
I was really inspired by this story and it is the reason I try to do things for others every chance I get. It also proves the theory that one random act of kindness has the ability to change the world because it inspires others to help. And while it might not be the whole world, it’s a start and you never know someone reading this may be inspired to help someone else out today.
46. From the first paragraph we can infer that ___.21·cn·jy·com
A. the couple was very poor
B. the author was warm-hearted
C. the article in the local paper was interesting
D. the author’s car was damaged in a hail storm
47. The second paragraph mainly describes ___.
A. the author’s mercy towards the young couple
B. the current condition of the young couple
C. the condition of the damaged house
D. the repair work of the damaged house
48. What does the underlined word“this”in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The envelope.
B. The stranger’s help.
C. The $100 note.
D. The stranger’s courage.
49. Why did some companies volunteer to cover the costs of repairs to the couple’s house?
A. Because the couple was too poor to repair their house.
B. Because the companies were inspired by the stranger’s deed.
C. Because the companies were generous to help local people.
D. Because the couple wanted to thank the stranger.
50. What does the author really want to tell us?
A. A random act of kindness can change the world.
B. There are still a lot of warm-hearted people.
C. Never give up when you face difficulties.
D. Sometimes a disaster can bring a fortune.

Homemade Ice Cream in a Bag
Milk can become homemade ice cream in five minutes by using a bag! This homemade, creamy treat is a summertime delight for your kids and you alike.
What you’ll need:
1 tablespoon of sugar; 1/2 cup of milk; 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla (香草香精); 6 tablespoons of rock salt; 1 small-sized plastic food storage bag; 1 gallon-sized plastic food storage bag; ice cubes.
How to make it:
·Fill the large bag half full of ice, and add the rock salt. Seal the bag.
·Put milk, vanilla, and sugar into the small bag, and seal it.
·Place the small bag inside the large one, and seal it again carefully.
·Shake until the mixture turns into ice cream, which takes about five minutes.
·Wipe the top of the small bag, and then open it carefully. Enjoy!
Tips:
1/2 cup of milk will make about one spoon of ice cream, so double the recipe if you want more. But don’t increase the amount more than that—a large amount might be too big for kids to pick up because the ice itself is heavy. Here’s another version of the homemade ice cream recipe from another parent: These are the homemade ice cream ingredients:
1/4 teaspoon of vanilla butter and nuts; 1 tablespoon of sugar; 1/2 cup of milk.
These are the other supplies:
Plastic sandwich bag; 12 salt pellets; 1 dish of ice; large plastic bag.
Put the ice cream ingredients in the small bag, and then put the bag, salt, and ice in the big bag. Hold the bag shut and move it around on the floor for about 5 minutes.
When I made ice cream at home last time, although the salt pellets didn’t really dissolve that well, I still got ice cream. It was not smooth ice cream, probably because of the low-fat milk. It was incredible that it could be ready in 5 minutes (not counting preparing the ingredients).
Next, I changed the recipe, using a tablespoon of cocoa, a tablespoon of sugar, and a cup of milk. It was a bit too chocolaty, but good!
51. The text is mainly aimed at___.
A. kids B. parents
C. ice cream producers D. ice cream sellers
52. The underlined“that”in“Tips”section refers to ___.
A. 1/2 cup of milk B. 1 cup of milk
C. 1 spoon of ice cream D. 2 spoons of ice cream
53. Which of the following things is NOT included in both recipes?
A. Sugar. B. Ice.
C. Plastic bag. D. Nuts.
54. According to the second recipe, which of the following steps is WRONG?
A. Put butter, nuts, sugar, milk in the small bag.
B. Put salt, ice and the small bag in the big bag.
C. Hold the big bag shut and move the bag around on the floor.
D. Mix the things in both bags together in a dish.
55. Which of the following statements about the author is TRUE?
A. He/She doesn’t agree with the first parent.
B. He/She doesn’t think five minutes is enough.
C. He/She doesn’t like cocoa.
D. He/She doesn’t think the chocolaty taste bad.
Being a good neighbor matters—not only because it makes life more pleasant, but also because being a good neighbor is part of being a good person.
Being a good neighbor has a lot to do with respecting privacy. It’s often best to mind your own business, give neighbors a lot of space and try to sense when it’s appropriate to back off. But it’s just as important to know when the time is right to give a hand. Helping with physical work is one good way to establish trust. If your neighbor is going to be moving some heavy furniture, or needs help fixing something you know your way around, offer to help out. Once you’re getting familiar, this assistance can also extend to things like house-sitting or collecting the mail while your neighbor is away. If you have a close relationship with your neighbors, the day may come when you’re asked to take care of their kids. Should you accept, you’ll probably end up playing with and entertaining these children.
It should go without saying that pet owners need to care for their animals properly. This includes cleaning up after them. There are few things more annoying for neighbors than a dog that uses their lawns(草坪)as a toilet, or that barks endlessly while chained up in a backyard. Don’t mess around—be a kind and responsible pet owner.
There are times when a certain level of noise is fine and there are times when it isn’t—and it’s good to know the difference. Turn the music down a bit after sundown, and further reduce the volume as it gets toward 10 pm. It’s usually fine to throw an occasional loud party as long as the neighbors are invited or have been informed.

in fact实际上,so所以,otherwise否则,均不合题意。

7. C as后跟句子,with后跟短语,但B项中的pass out意为“死;出去;分发”等,意思不对。
8. D solve解决。另外“在某人的帮助下”用with the help of sb.
9. C signal sb. to do sth. 由let/make sb. do sth.
10. B deal with处理,对付。make use of利用;come up with提出;go through经历,遭受。
14. A such. .
15. A after all毕竟;as a result结果;in other words换句话说;as usual像往常一样。
16. B 与后面的with构成搭配,即share sth. with sb.
18. A move . .
20. C 根据第一段最后一句话中的when the class was nearly over可知,这时候还没有下课,因此本题选C项。
24. C end
25. A the way of意为“……的方式”。上帝用这种方式告诉我们必须好好地利用每一天。
26. D make the most of是固定词组,意思是“充分利用”。

根据文章第四段中的“Firms spend millions on software to block their employees from watching videos, using social networking sites or shopping online...”
从文章第一段最后一句“I remember it well and so did my car…”
从文章最后一段的“I was really inspired by this story and it is the reason I try to do things for others every chance I get. ”可以推断出这些公司也是受到陌生人善举的鼓舞而来帮助年轻夫妇的。
50. A 作者意图题。从文章最后一段可知作者写这篇文章主要是想告诉我们:一个偶然的善举能改变我们的世界。
51. B 推理判断题。根据第一段的“delight for your kids and you alike”可知B为正确答案。
前面提到“1/2 cup of milk”,后面提到“double the recipe",因此that在这里指1杯牛奶。
根据最后一段的“It was a bit too chocolaty, but good!”

This is our second trip and is an unusual experience. It was the first time we were able to take the dog on a motorcycle trip. In fact this became a ferry(摆渡)trip with some motorcycling. We had six ferry rides to get all the way through the tour. Including camp fees, ferry tickets and gas,the
whole four days cost only about$300.
There were two highlights(亮点)of this route. One was Lund, the highway before Sechelt, which was very winding(蜿蜒的)and high up along the coastline. The other was the three Sunshine Coast ferries from south of Powell River to Horseshoe Bay and Gibson's Landing.
This is another route for people coming from the east who want a different way to get from Vancouver to Vancouver Island. If things worked out, you could probably make it in one day leaving from Horseshoe Bay in North Vancouver and ending up in Comox on Vancouver Island.
The dog is an experienced traveler. She has gone by plane, train and car in her cage. Leaving her at home is not a good choice since we have to find a dog sitter—she doesn’t like being in kennels(狗房).We did a test run here on Salt Spring Island.
We put her in the cage which we had tied carefully to the trailer(拖车)of our motorcycle. After a 30-minute test run we found she was OK with no ill effects. We then proceeded and things went fine. Sometimes, when we stopped, we would find her asleep in the cage.
Next time we go up to Lund we may go to Desolation Sound. There is also a 180 km hiking path from Sechell to north of Lund.21cnjy.com

Baseball was invented by Abner Doubleday in 1839 in Cooperstown, New York. But Doubleday had nothing to do with the game. American baseball has its nearest ancestry(祖先)in an English game called rounders, which, called town ball, was played in America in the 1800s. There are some differences
between rounders and American baseball. Printed rules for rounders have appeared since 1828.
How, then, was Doubleday said to be the inventor? In 1907, a special baseball commission(委员会)had been set up to find an American “inventor”. They reached an agreement that Doubleday was its man, based only on a letter it had received from one Abner Graves. He said they had been schoolmates and he had been present at Cooperstown in 1839 when Doubleday designed baseball. But it's now known that no member of the commission ever met with Graves or had any communication with Graves.
It should be noted that Graves was five years old in 1839,15 years younger than Doubleday, who entered West Point at the time. Further, Doubleday later enjoyed a great military career(军事生涯)there. He left a large collection of letters and diaries. But none of them mentioned baseball—nor did the notice of his death in the New York Times. In fact, the Baseball Hall of Fame calls Alexander J. Cartwright, who was a founder of the New York Knickerbockers, the Father of Modern Baseball. If he and his teammates didn't invent the game, at least they helped give it a structure(结构)that can be recognized today.
But some untrue things die hard, and there's little doubt that the Doubleday story will remain a hit with future fans.

43. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To tell a story to make people laugh.

President Barack Obama set out his plans for the nation on January 27. At the top of his to-do list: jobs for Americans, health care and education.
“Although we have our difficulties, our union is strong. We do not give up. We do not stop,”President Barack Obama told Americans in his State of the Union speech on January 27. Guests and government officials filled the hall of the House of Representatives(众议院).
Obama looked back on his first year in office and explained his plan for the future. He dealt with important matters, including health care, the nation’s high unemployment, national security(安全)and education. Many times during the 70-minute speech, people in the hall clapped(拍手)their hands happily.
The U. S. law system requires the President to report regularly to government officials. Presidents see the speech as an opportunity to set their goals and encourage the nation.
The President devoted much of his speech to the plight of unemployed Americans.“Jobs must be our Number 1 focus in 2010,”he said.“People are out of work. They are hurting.”Obama also stressed the value of education.“The best way for people to lead a better life is a first-class education,”he told the nation.
Following the President’s speech, the other party always gets the chance to speak. Bob McDonnell, the new governor of Virginia, spoke for Republicans(共和党人). He agreed with many of Obama’s goals, but pointed out policy differences. He tried to persuade both parties to work together. The President had made the same point earlier in the evening. He promised to hold monthly meetings with members of both parties.“Let’s show the American people,”he said,“that we can do it together.”

If you could see a movie of your life before you lived it, would you want to live it? Probably not. The excitement of living is that you don't know what's coming.
Sure, it’s hard to see uncertainty(不确定)in such a positive(积极的)light when you’re out of work, or when you feel like you're failing. But uncertainty is really another word for opportunity.
When Allison graduated from Harvard, she had opportunities all over the place but had no idea what she wanted to do. She took a job in consulting(咨询)but she knew she wouldn’t stay there. She took the GRE and scored so high that she was able to increase her income by teaching students. Still, she didn’t think she wanted to go to graduate school. Allison knew she wasn’t doing what she wanted, but she didn’t know what she wanted.
She worried. All her friends were going to graduate school or starting their own businesses. She was lost and felt that she would never find anything out.
After six years, many of her friends who went directly to professional(职业的)school had crises(危机)when they graduated because they weren’t sure if they had picked the right profession. And Allison, by having a general plan in mind, got married, moved to the Midwest, and used her consulting experience to get a great job.
Allison realizes that her years spent being lost was actually just a period during which she was finding her way:time well spent, and time we must all take if we’re being honest with ourselves.
The only way to lead an interesting life is to face
uncertainty and make a choice. Otherwise your life is not your own—it is a path someone else has chosen. Moments of uncertainty are when you create your life, when you become who you are.
Uncertainty usually begins with a job hunt, but it doesn’t end there. Every new role we take on means another round of uncertainty. Instead of fearing it, here are some new ways to deal with uncertainty.
52. It can be inferred from the first two paragraphs that________.
A. being out of work is a sad thing
B. uncertainty is what makes life interesting
C. life in a film is more exciting than life in reality
D. opportunity never appears when we need it
53. What troubled Allison after graduation?
A. She couldn’t find a well-paid job.
B. She had no money to start a business.
C. She was not sure what to do.
D. She didn’t score high enough for graduate school.
54. How did Allison feel about her six years' working experience?
A. Doubtful. B. Sad.
C. Regretful. D. Satisfied.
55. What is most likely to be discussed in the following paragraph?
A. How to deal with uncertainty.
B. What role uncertainty plays in life.
C. Why people fear uncertainty.
D. Who is to blame for uncertainty.

4.B deal with与how连用,what与do with连用。
5.D in my way表示“挡我的道,妨碍我的事”。
本题实际考查take advantage of短语。

A home computer not only helps children master the old ways of learning, but also opens up possibilities that simply aren’t available in traditional education. Some software, for example, allows kids to make decisions and see the results in different situations. The World Wide Web encourages young minds to move easily from link to link, topic to topic. The best software draws children into learning by making them curious—what if I click on this picture, drag this over here, visit that website?
Knowing how to use a computer also encourages a child’s confidence. Kids figure out quickly that computers are powerful, and mastering the machine makes them feel grown-up. In turn, feeling confident on a computer often translates to academic(学术的)confidence. Researchers have found that attitudes toward writing, for example, improve when students write on a computer.
Perhaps most importantly, computers can enrich family life. Forget the idea that computer kids are separated. Children like to use the computer with adults and other kids, asking questions and comparing results. “The Internet is a unique opportunity to bring resources home, ”notes Susan Haugland, PhD, Cape Girardeau, Mo. , author of Computer and Young Children:A World of Discovery.
Although the benefits of computers are real, they have disadvantages, too. Kids can lose their way, wasting hours on mindless software of violent games. Just as parents have always helped children make good choices about everything from friends to food, books to TV, now we must make sure they get the best out of computers.

Like most people, you may have heard a lot about online banking but probably haven’t tried it yourself. You still pay your bills by mail much in the way your parents did, for you are probably afraid of not knowing how to deal with it. Actually, online banking isn’t out to change your money habits.
Instead, it uses today’s computer technology to give you the choice of by-passing the time- consuming, paper-based ways of traditional banking in order to pay your money more quickly and efficiently. The advantage of the Internet and the popularity of personal computers presented both an opportunity and a challenge for the banking industry. For years, financial(金融的)institutions have used powerful computer networks to automate(自动操作)millions of daily transactions(业务).Now that their customers are connected to the Internet from personal computers, banks begin to expect similar economic advantages by adapting(采用)those same internal electronic processes to home use.
Today, most large national banks, many regional banks and even smaller banks and credit unions offer some form of online banking, variously known as PC banking, home banking, electronic banking or Internet banking. Online banks are sometimes referred to as brick-to-click banks. The challenge for the banking industry has been to design this new service channel in such a way that its customers will readily learn to use and trust it. Most of the large banks can now offer fully secure, fully functional online banking for free or for a small fee. As more banks succeed online and more customers use their sites, fully functional online banking likely will become as common as automated teller machines (ATM).
Online banking has a lot of advantages. Unlike your corner bank, online banking sites never close; they’re available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and they’re only a mouse click away. If you're out of state or even out of the country when a money problem rises, you can log on instantly to your online bank and take care of business. Online bank sites generally execute(执行)and confirm transactions at or quicker than ATM processing speeds. Many online banking sites now offer advanced tools, including account aggregation, stock quotes, and portfolio managing programmes to help you manage all of your assets(财产)more effectively.
