A Wolf in Danger
What is happening to the timber wolf today?
Native Americans and early settlers often went to sleep to the sound of a lonely lullaby(催眠曲). It was the song of the wolf howling in a distant forest. There were many wolves then. One kind was the North American timber wolf. 【来源:21·世纪·教育·网】
Wolves are important to the balance of nature because they eat sick and weak animals. In Colorado, people tried to help deer by shooting wolves. But then there were so many deer that many of them starved to death. 21*cnjy*com
The timber wolf is on the endangered special list. Animals on this list are in danger of disappearing from the earth. People drove the wolves away by cutting down the forests to build houses, towns, and highways. Timber wolves are now found only in Canada, Alaska, Michigan, and Minnesota.

Unless governments take necessary measures to protect tigers, they may disappear by 2010, the World Wildlife Fund said Thursday.
The conservation(保护) group said tiger numbers have decreased(减少) 95 percent in the past century and only 5 000~7 200 tigers still remain in the wild — compared with the number at the start of the century.
WWF published an update of their study on Feb. 11, 1999 — Wanted Alive: Tigers in the Wild, marking the end of the Chinese Year of the Tiger.
The report states that in spite of the great efforts over the past year, much remains to be done to prevent the tiger from becoming extinct early next century. If governments do not fight against unlawful hunting and get rid of the demand for tiger products the tiger will go to extinction, says WWF.
“We cannot relax for one moment if we are to make it certain that tigers will still exist in the wild by the next Chinese Year of the Tiger in 2010.” Said Elizabeth Kemt, species conservation information manager at WWF International and one of the authors of the report.
Three of the subspecies of tiger—the Bali, Caspian and Javan tigers are extinct. The South China tiger faces the same end as only 20 or 30 are known to remain in the wild, down from 4 000 in 1950s.
25. This passage tells us that _______.
A. WWF is a government organization of China
B. there are altogether two Chinese Years of the Tiger: 1999 and 2010

Many wildlife species are dying out, and many important places for them to live are being destroyed. The situation may seem hopeless, but if everyone makes a small effort we can make a big difference. Each one of us plays an important role in protecting wildlife and their homes. Here are some tips on how you can make a difference every day.
Become a Park Protector: Join NPCA. It aims to help make sure that our national parks are protected for present and future generations. Take Action! Now you can sign up for Park Lines and write a letter to the editor. You can also visit our online information to communicate with legislators and other decision-makers. Your voice can make a difference.
Provide Wildlife Habitat: Plant a native garden in your own backyard. Build a Bird House or Bat House.
Leave Nature as You Find It: Don’t feed wild animals. Do not move animals or plants into locations where they are not native. Do not bring your pets into the park.
Act Conservatively: Conserve fossil fuels(石油). It means that you can take public transportation, walk, or ride a bicycle instead of using a car. Turn off lights, radios, and the TV when you are not using them. Lower the temperature in your home at night to 68 degrees during winter months. Turning the water off when washing dishes, taking shorter showers, turning off the tap while you brush your teeth, and watering your lawn in the early morning or late evening will help protect the wetlands.
Be an Educated Consumer: Don’t buy products like tortoise shell, coral, or ivory made from endangered animals, and avoid ordering dishes like shark in restaurants. Take your own (reusable) bag to the store and try to buy products and food with little or no packaging.

One way of preventing flood may be making rain! This may sound rather strange. As we know, heavy rain is the cause of floods, and in Malaysia most of the flood are caused by the annual monsoon(季风), which brings heavy rain to the east coast. If, however, the rain could be made to fall in the China Sea, there would be no more flood since the rain clouds would not reach the east coast.www-2-1-cnjy-com
Is it possible to make clouds give up their rain? Yes, it is, and in 1973 the National Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research (NISIR) suggested that it would be tried. The institute knew of course that it is not possible to make all clouds give up all their rain. It calculated, however, that if the frequency of rainfall could be reduced by 10%, and the amount of rain that fell each time could be reduced by 15%, the total amount of flood damage would be reduced by 40%--50%.
As you probably know, clouds are caused by air conditioning water-vapor. The air rises and, since water-vapor becomes water when it cools, very tiny drops of water are formed. Since these drops are very small, they float in the air, and form cloud. When the cloud rises, however, the drops become colder. Because of this, they join together and become big drops. The big drops are no longer able to float because of their size, and they fall. As they fall, they pick up more drops and become bigger. This is the cause of rain.
31. According to the passage, one way of preventing floods is ______ .
to bring heavy rain
to make the rain clouds
C. to cause monsoon in the sea
D. to make the rain fall in the sea before it reaches the coast
32. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
In Malaysia, the monsoon often results in floods
It is likely to cause all clouds to give up all the rain.
The frequency of rainfall could be cut down, and so could the amount of rainfall.
If people found ways of reducing the amount of rainfall, there would be less flood damage.
33. What does “it” of “since water-vapor becomes water when it cools” (in Para. 3) refer to?
A. Cloud B. Water C. Water-vapor D. Air
34. The third paragraph is concerned with ______ .
A. how clouds cause rain B. how rain is formed
C. how clouds rise in the air D. why water-vapor can float in the air
35. It can be inferred from the passage that______ .
the higher the air rises, the higher the temperature is
the clouds rise, and the water drops become smaller2·1·c·n·j·y
the higher the air rises, the lower the temperature gets
the rain is caused by water-vapor

How to Get A Teacher to Like You
Are you looking to get a teacher on your good side? Look for some extra points in participation. You don't have to be a teacher's pet, either.21教育网

At the very least this means that you don't back-talk or insult (侮辱) the teacher. This might be difficult. But if you are polite to them, they will look stupid being rude to you. Just following directions can go a long way. 40 Find out their birthday and congratulate them. Respect your teacher. Make sure that you are always on time.
A. Know what your teacher likes.
B. Know how to get to your teacher's office.

Saving Our City
It is very important to deal with the rubbish in cities. If there is too much rubbish everywhere, it will pollute the environment in the cities and it is also harmful to our health for certain.
In that case, we can divide the rubbish into different kinds. And throw the rubbish in different places, such as the life rubbish and the waste plastic, used batteries, etc. Newspapers and glass can be recycled, the harmful rubbish should be buried deep into the earth and the waste water can also be cleaned up again. We should also form the good habit of not littering things everywhere. Above all, we should make the laws and try our best to protect our environment from now on.21·cn·jy·com
