1. The musicians were to play jokes on each other as well as play music, most of which was based loosely on the Beatles.
这些音乐人不仅演奏音乐,还彼此打趣逗笑。这些玩笑和音乐大多都在模仿“甲壳虫”乐队。
a)本句是一个含有非限制性定语从句。主句谓语部分were to加上由as well as 连接两个并列的不定式构成。非限制性定语从句是属介词前置(即most of+ which引导)的定语从句。该语法是本单元学习重点。除此句之外,课文中还可见如下同类句子,如:
(1)Have you ever dreamed of playing in front of thousands of people at a concert, at which everyone is clapping and appreciating your music?
(2)They may start as a group of high-school students, for whom practicing their music in someone’s house is the first step to fame.

b) as well as连接并列部分时的用法:
as well as连接的并列部分的翻译特点是先译as well as后文,强调前者。如:
She is good at French as well as English.她不仅擅长英语而且擅长法语。
此外,as well as连接并列主语时,谓语动词的单复数要根据as well as前面的名词或
代词确定。如:The teacher as well as the students was moved by the film.
还有,as well as 连接名词放句首时,其含义相当于besides(除了……外还有), 如:
As well as music, she also likes dancing very much.

二.语法突破:
介词/ 短语介词 + 关系代词的定语从句
1. 直接位于介词或短语介词之后的关系代词只能是which,whom或whose+名词构成。例:
1.The girl with whom I went to the concert is my sister.
2.The service about which the customers complain a lot should be improved.
3.He is the writer from whose novel I learned a lot in those days.
4.One day we climbed up the hill, on top of which we saw a temple in the distance.
5.Look at the photo. This is Mr. Green, in front of whom sit three students.
6.They are the villagers, in whose village I taught ten years ago.
2. 直接位于介词后面的关系代词不能省略,但如果介词不位于关系代词之前时,关系代词可省略。例:
1.The woman (who/that/whom) I talked to just now is a doctor.
2.The service (which/ that) the customers complain about a lot should be improved.
3. 关系副词when, where, why 可以相应地转化为:介词+which结构。例:
1.The school where she teaches stands by the river
. =The school in which she teaches stands by the river.
2.Do you remember the year when our band came into being?
=Do you remember the year in which our band came into being?
3.No one knew the reason why she was absent from class.
=No one knew the reason for which she was absent from class.
4. 有一些动词短语中的介词是固定搭配,不可以拆开,该介词不可以提前:例:
This is the disabled woman whom the girl is looking after.
5. 不定代词+of+ which/ whom 引导的定语从句可转化为of+ which/ whom+ 不定代词 结构;可用的不定代词有some, any, none, both, all, many, a few, few, a little, little, either, neither, one, 等等。
1.There are 30 students in his class, some of whom(=of whom some)are from Australia.
2.Recently I have read three novels, none of which( of which none) is interesting.
3.He is the musician, many of whose records (of whose records many )are very popular.
6. 关系代词whose+名词 引导的定语从句可转化为 the+名词+of+ which / whom 或
of+ which/whom+ the +名词结构;of 表所属关系。例:
1.She lives in a house whose windows open to the south.
= She lives in a house the windows of which(of which the windows) open to the south.
2.This is the student whose handwriting is excellent.
= This is the student the handwriting of whom (of whom the handwriting) is excellent.
7. 由介词+关系代词引导的定语从句,当主从句主语一致时,定语从句可缩略为:
介词+ which/whom+ to do 结构。
1.She bought a nice box in which to put all her necklaces.
= She bought a nice box to put all her necklaces in.
2.I want to find a partner with whom to do this experiment.
= I want to find a partner to do this experiment with.
8.有些介词后可以接关系副词,主要取决于介词及句子意思。例:
1.He stood by the window, from where he could see the beautiful view in the distance.
2.She came to the city in 1982, since when she has worked in a company in the city.
3.It was my sister who first had the idea to cycle along the entire Mekong River from where it begins to where it ends.(必修1. Unit 3.)
句意:首先想到沿湄公河从源头到终点骑车旅游的是我的姐姐。
如何确定关系代词前的介词
其方法有二:
1.看定语从句的谓语动词是否与某介词产生搭配词组;例:
Do you know the man to whom she referred at the meeting?
本句中介词 to与从句的谓语动词referred产生搭配,故用to whom.
This is the city to which the foreign guests wish to pay a visit next week.
句中介词 to与从句的谓语动词部分pay a visit 产生搭配,故用to which.
2.看定语从句的谓语动词与先行词的关系,需要什么介词辅助;例:
I really like the beautiful dress in which Miss Rose went to the ball the other day.
从句的谓语动词went与先行词dress 之间需用介词in表示“穿着……去”,故用 in which.
Who is the girl with whom you went to the party yesterday evening?
从句的谓语动词went与先行词the girl 之间需用介词 with表示“和某人一起去”,故用 with whom.

It was the first snow of winter — an exciting day for every child but not for most teachers. Up until now, I had been old enough to dress myself, but today would need some help.
