Einstein was not only the outstanding scientist of the 20th century, but also a gifted and enthusiastic musician. He once said that had he not been a scientist, he would have been a musician. “Life without playing music is unthinkable for me,” he said. “I live my daydreams in music. I get most joy in life out of music.”
Einstein's mother, Pauline, was a talented pianist who brought music to life in the family home. Einstein began to learn the violin at the age of 6. However, he worked hard until discovering the joys of Mozart's sonatas (奏鸣曲) at the age of 13. From that point on, although he had no further lessons, his violin remained his companion (伴侣).
When Einstein moved to Aarau in?Switzerland?in 1895 to complete his schooling, he seemed to have devoted a good deal of his time to music. Just before his 17th birthday Einstein played at a music examination in the school. The examiner reported that “a student called Einstein shone in a deeply felt performance of one of the Beethoven sonatas”. In addition to his great skill in playing the violin, he also played the piano and, in particular, loved to improvise (即兴创作).
In later life, Einstein's reputation as a physicist often led to invitations to perform at benefit concerts, which he generally accepted happily. At one such event, a critic — not knowing Einstein's real reputation as a physicist — wrote, “Einstein plays excellently. However, his world-wide reputation is undeserved. There are many violinists who are just as good.”
Probably the summary of Einstein the violinist that comes nearest to the mark comes from his friend Janos Plesch, who wrote, “There are many musicians with much better skills, but none, I believe, who ever played with more sincerity or deeper feeling.”
24. We learn from Paragraph 1 that Einstein _____.
A. had a great love for music
B. enjoyed daydreaming in music
C. had stopped playing music for a while
D. preferred to be a musician rather than a scientist
25. After discovering the joys of Mozart's sonatas, Einstein _____.
A. began to create his own music
B. spent a lot of time playing his violin
C. started learning the piano by himself
D. moved to?Switzerland?to learn the violin
26. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A. Einstein did excellently in the examination.
B. Einstein's life in Aarau affected his musical taste.
C. Einstein's performance disappointed the examiner.
D. Einstein practiced the Beethoven sonatas for his birthday.
27. By mentioning the critic's words, the author probably wants to show _____.
A. Einstein didn't live up to his reputation
B. Einstein was also an outstanding violinist
C. Einstein played better than professional violinists
D. Einstein wished there would be more benefit concerts

?????? Soda (苏打汽水), while sweet and inexpensive, may not be worth drinking. Sugary drinks can have many bad health effects, including a 26% greater risk?of diabetes (糖尿病) for regular soda drinkers. And men drinking one can of sugary drinks per day have a?20% higher risk?of having or dying from a heart attack than those who rarely drink them. The health effects of drinking soda also affect pre-school children, heightening their chances of becoming obese(肥胖的) at a very young age. According to Harvard School of Public Health, one in three children in America are obese or overweight, and childhood obesity has tripled (增至三倍) in the last 30 years. Should government get people to reduce their drinking of soda and sugary drinks due to health effects?
?????? People in?San Francisco?were given the opportunity to voice their opinion on Proposition E, which suggested a soda tax (税). The tax, which needed to pass with a two-thirds majority, would have provided money for health and physical education programs, and the hope was that it would also discourage citizens from buying unhealthy drinks. Although?San Francisco's Proposition E failed to be passed,?Berkeley?citizens succeeded in passing the nation's first ever sugary drink tax on their similar Measure D.
?????? People who were for the tax hoped that the price of sugary drinks would discourage people from buying them.?Mexico?recently introduced a tax on drinks, which, though not well received by the public, was successful in reducing the amount of soda bought. After the tax was put into effect,?Mexico's biggest soda production company's sales dropped by 6.4%.
?????? People who were against the tax were concerned about their right to buy whatever drinks they wanted, without any additional taxes. Those who also disagreed were the market, the bar, and soda industries, which would possibly lose money from reduced sales of these drinks because of the added cost. And although the Proposition E tax money was supposed to go to city-operated programs, some citizens were doubtful about how well this plan would have been carried out.21·cn·jy·com

?????? Learning can happen anywhere. Kids can learn at a school, at home or learn online. Students who learn online use their computers and the Internet to connect to online classrooms. They use a camera connected to their computer to let the teacher and other students see them and they can also see their teacher and classmates on their screens.
?????? Before the Internet, children in remote places sometimes had classes over the radio or used the mail to get lessons and return them. Today, students who live far away from their teacher have classes on the Internet. In some online classrooms, kids can use a special computer program at the same time as the teacher. The students can live in one country, and the teacher can be located in a different country. Still, it's just like a classroom at your school. The teacher can teach the kids. The kids can ask questions. Everyone can see and hear everything that's being said as it happens.
?????? It is also possible for students to live in different places and be a part of an online class together. Each person goes to a website for the class they are taking. Thousands of people can watch and listen to this class at the same time. They can use a microphone to ask and answer questions. When the lesson is completed and all good-byes have been said, the students and teacher in the online class log out (注销). The connection over the Internet is broken, and the online classroom disappears.
?????? Online classes can be held whenever it is best for the teacher and students. Sometimes, they don't have to have a class where everyone is together all at once. There are classes where all the materials are posted on the website and students can use them whenever they need to. They can write questions and turn in their assignments(作业). They can check back later to see if the teacher has left answers or comments(评论)?on their work. No one ever actually “meets” anyone face-to-face. Many college classes are taught this way.
32. Which similarity between online and regular classrooms is mentioned in the text?
A. Students have to hand in their homework.
B. Students can always refer to online information.
C. Students have to listen attentively and take notes.
D. Students can communicate with teachers and other students.

D. Online classrooms have less requirements and are easy to build.
34. We know from the last paragraph that _____.
A. online learning is accessible but challenging
B. online learners do better than face-to-face learners21cnjy.com
C. online classes will certainly replace college classes
D. online courses give students much flexibility and convenience
35. Which of the following would the author most probably agree with?
A. Students in the same class should live close to each other.

In an effort to promote (推广) green energy, engineering students from a technical high school college in Mexico have designed a motorcycle that runs on self-produced energy.
The motorbike can carry up to 110 kilograms and run at a speed of more than 60 kilometres an hour with an engine that runs without using any fuel.
The young inventors, Victor Garcia and Raul Grajales, who come from the city of Oaxaca, say their prototype (样机) called R-Walker, is a creative invention for eco-friendly vehicles and could help reduce dependency on non-renewable fuels such as petrol(汽油).
“The project is a prototype that generates its own energy as it goes along: As it goes faster and covers longer distances, it generates more energy. In that way, you don't have to charge the battery every 6-8 hours. You also avoid having to fill up the tank (油箱) with petrol and you don't have to charge it very often,” said eco-motorbike designer,?Victor Garcia.
Apart from its self-sustaining (自我维持的) engine, the body of the bike was built using bits of bicycles and iron, which were reused by students.
That is why the bike is cheap to make, said Professor?Alejandro Villavicencio, the head of the school of robotics at?Oaxaca, who oversaw the development of the eco-bike and managed to get the financial resources needed for the project to become a reality.
“It's a product which can be developed at a very low cost, more or less between 3,000 and 4,000 pesos (The peso is the standard unit of money in many Latin American countries),” Villavicencio said.
“In this way, we have saved 200 batteries and reduced a bike's pollution by seventy percent, as we use one battery every 5-10 years,” said co-designer,?Raul Grajales.
The original idea was born as a project to make life easier for students in rural?Oaxaca?who must walk several hours to get to school.
The development of the bike helped the students and their teacher win a gold medal at the international competition of robotics, “Exporecerca”, held inSpain.
1. What is special about R-Walker?
A. It can produce its own energy.
B. It can travel?110 km?per hour.
C. It has been mass produced.
D. It has a couple of engines.
2. If R-Walker travels a longer distance, _____.
A. you should charge the battery
B. you should reduce its speed
C. it will run out of petrol
D. it will still work well
3. The motorbike can be made at low costs because _____.?
A. students are able to produce it
B. the production process is simple?
C. it is built with recycled materials
D. it can be produced in large numbers
4. Garcia and Grajales designed R-Walker in order to _____.
A. attract financial support for their school
B. help rural students save time on the way
C. win a gold medal at Exporecerca
D. improve traditional batteries?
5. Why did the author write the text?
