第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
Scope: Recently your school board proposed (提议) moving the school start time from 7:50 a.m. to 7:20 a.m. What was your reaction to this?2·1·c·n·j·y
Jilly Dos Santos: I was getting only four to six hours of sleep a night and I was late for school a lot. With the new start time, I'd have to wake up even earlier. After we heard about the proposal, a teacher said to my class, “If you don't like it, why don't you do something about it?”21*cnjy*com
Scope: What did you do?
Jilly: I organized a group of students to speak to the school board.
Scope: What did you do to prepare for the meeting?
Jilly: I wanted to focus our presentation on why having an earlier start time was unhealthy. There is scientific research about teens and sleep. I learned that during your teen years, because of a change in hormones (激素), your body clock begins to change. You start to want to go to bed later. School starts the same time it always has, so getting enough sleep becomes difficult. I realized there wasn't something wrong with my time management or me; the way I was feeling had a physical and biological basis(根据).
Scope: How did it go?
Jilly: About 30 students came to support me, and the board liked that I didn't get emotional(激动的) and just provided the evidence. Two months later, an 8:55 a.m. start time became official: The board decided to make the start time later instead of earlier.
Scope: What has changed since the later start time?
Jilly: I don't need to stay up an extra hour or two at night, because I can get work done in the morning. I've also been late a lot less. And this year, there are more morning clubs and more people going to them.

Richard Branson has had great, global success. He is best known as the founder of Virgin Group, which consists of more than 400 companies.
So what, I asked, is his most important secret to success? His answer was simple: look for the best in other people.
Throughout his life he's never thought ill of other people. He looks for the best and praises them. Branson at times seems almost not human. He's too good at what he does. No, great. Nearly perfect. When he starts something, he is very likely to succeed. He has fallen out with others though, like anyone else. He is human. He told me:
“Life is short and the world is much smaller than one realizes. You are going to come across people time and time again in the most surprising places ... As a leader it's even more important to be out there praising and encouraging people. If you do fall out with somebody in life, even if you think it was their mistake, give them a call. Befriend them. Go out to lunch with them.”
The greatest leaders in the world have taught forgiveness. Perhaps the most extreme example is Nelson Mandela who invited his former(从前的) prison guard to his inauguration (就职典礼) and even had lunch with a man who in the past wanted him to be sentenced to death.
Life is too short. We are humans and sometimes we make mistakes and anger people. What defines us is not those who are able to avoid confrontation? (对抗), but those who are able to deal with it. The human body is able to self-heal (自愈) when we are cut. In that same manner, we must heal our past relationships.
Branson wins respect from those around him. A natural-born leader, he is always deep in thought and hungry for more; always one step ahead. And it was Richard Branson who taught me about forgiveness.
25. Richard Branson's success lies in his _____.
A. efforts???????????????????? B. generosity
C. judgement ? ? ? ? ? ? ? D. determination
26. The example of Nelson Mandela is mentioned to show _____.

A. live in peace with others

28. What would be the best title for the text?

On Jan. 30, 1962, three schoolgirls started laughing in a boarding school (寄宿学校) classroom in the northeastern corner of what is now Tanzania — and touched off a very strange epidemic (流行病). The three couldn't stop laughing — and soon the uncontrollable laughter spread to their classmates. The laughing attacks lasted from a few minutes up to a few hours; one poor girl reportedly experienced symptoms for 16 straight days. Victims couldn't focus on their schoolwork, and would hit those who tried to stop them. 21cnjy.com
When 95 of the school's 159 pupils had come down with what came to be known as omuneepo, the Swahili word for laughing disease, the school shut down. The students returned to their villages, taking omuneepo?with them. The epidemic spread from person to person, school to school, village to village. “The education of the children is being seriously affected and there is great fear among the villages,” noted local medical officers in a 1963 report in the?Central African Journal of Medicine. They could not find an explanation for the matter. When the epidemic finally died down months later, about a thousand people had been struck by the “laughing disease”.
To unlock the mystery, we traveled to northeastern Tanzania, where omuneepo spread more than a half century ago. We tracked down teachers, students, and medical experts who experienced the epidemic firsthand. We learned there was nothing funny at all about the situation at the time. The religious boarding school where the laughter began was marked by strict rules, windowless dorms, and very uncomfortable chairs designed to correct students' posture(姿势). Researchers found similar conditions at other locations where omuneepo later erupted: Serious overcrowding, poor food quality.
“It's a form of complaint,” Kroeber Rugliyama, a local doctor said of the mysterious laughter. “They had no other form of expression.”
29. The underlined words “touched off” in the first paragraph probably mean “_____”.
A. made something begin
B. came across something
C. had control of something
D. caused something to change
30. What did the local people in Tanzania think of omuneepo?
A. Rather interesting. ??
B. Very frightening.
C. Pretty funny.
D. Quite usual.
31. What did scientists find out about the boarding school?
A. It was located near a hospital.
B. It taught students about funny things.
C. Its environment was unbearable.
D. It paid too much attention to students' health.
32. According to Rugliyama, the truth about omuneepo was probably that _____.
A. people hoped to forget their sorrow
B. people really enjoyed this way of life
C. people tried to draw attention to themselves
D. people wanted to express their dissatisfaction

Starting on April 1, the Navajo Nation — one of the largest tribal (部落的) governments of the North American Indian tribes — will charge a 2% tax (税) on junk food sold on its reservation — the first tax of its kind in the United States. The change is part of the Healthy Diné Nation Act, which will also remove a 5% sales tax on healthy foods, like fresh fruits and vegetables.
Denisa Livingston of the Diné Community Advocacy Alliance, a group that helped pass this law, hopes to make people in the community more aware of their food choices. “This is a friendly awareness tax,” she told Time For Kids.
About 24,600 Navajo tribe members face obesity(肥胖), and type 2 diabetes has developed as a growing public health concern affecting up to 60% of the Navajo people in some areas.
Livingston says that the Navajo Nation's status as a “food desert” contributes to the health problems her people face. A food desert is an area where fresh, healthy food is expensive and hard to find. Food deserts are especially common in low-income communities, such as the Navajo Nation, where 38% of the population lives at the poverty level.
Livingston hopes the law will lead to major changes. “If we continue on the route that we are now on, then eventually we're not going to be looking forward to healthy generations to come,” she said.
The money that the government collects from junk food taxes will be put towards projects that encourage people to eat healthy foods, like community vegetable gardens, greenhouses, and farmer's markets.
“This act is going to open the door to many more opportunities and conversations and ideas about how we move to ‘a food oasis (绿洲)',” Livingston said. “Whether you're deep in the reservation or the neighboring towns, you will have the availability of healthy foods.”
33. What does Denisa Livingston think of the junk food tax?
A. It is much too high.
B. It has been introduced too late.
C. It should be applied nationwide.
D. It is a wake-up call to the Navajo Nation.
34. What can we learn about the Navajo people?
A. They live a quiet and happy life.
B. They are good at planting gardens.
C. They are facing some health problems.
D. They are quite friendly with one another.
35. What is the main purpose of this text?
A. To introduce a plan for good health.
B. To discuss if healthy food should be taxed.
C. To explain why junk food can cause obesity.
D. To describe how the Navajo Nation live their life.

Once, abalones were brought to the surface in the hope that they contained beautiful pearls(珍珠). Today, the shellfish are caught for a different reason — restaurant menus! The fresh white shellfish has a special flavor and is the most highly valued product from Omani waters. It is only fished along the shores of Dhofar.
This shellfish has only one shell, unlike other shellfish, which have two. The shell is very beautiful. The shells of several abalones can be used for decorative(装饰性的) purposes, and to make jewellery and buttons.
Abalones live in shallow marine waters with rocky-bottom conditions. Young abalones shelter in small groups, holding on to the undersides of huge rocks, and the adults live in groups of up to a dozen together in rocky cracks(缝隙). They can only survive successfully in areas where cold, nutritious water rises from the sea bed. There, in the shallow, brightly lit conditions, the abalone shellfish live.
The coast of Dhofar in Oman is one of the special environments that support abalone populations. The southern shore of Oman experiences monsoon winds (季风) across the surface of the sea from April to September. As these winds sweep the surface, the rich cold water from the depths of the Arabian Sea can easily rise and move towards the shore.
Abalones are harvested after the monsoon period, between October and March. Fishermen dive to a depth of ten metres, and a good diver searches for large adults and will collect up to 600 abalones per day. In order to do this, the diver may have to cover an area of about 100 square metres.

It was close to midnight as one truck after another ran slowly down a quiet street in Laguna Beach. Considering the time of night, it was unusual to see vehicles on the road. Yet several trucks pulled over and workers silently unloaded camera equipment and cardboard boxes, and then carried them inside the Morgenson family home.
What took place over the next eight weeks was inspired(受启发的) by a Hollywood movie called The Joneses about a family of marketers who move into a local neighborhood to sell their products secretly to their neighbors. The idea was to test the power of word-of-mouth marketing. By filming a “real”family in unscripted (没有剧本的) situations, my team and I would document how the Morgensons' circle of friends responded to brands and products the Morgensons brought into their lives. Would they want all the things that family has? Would this influence be so powerful as to make them actually go out and buy those things?21世纪教育网版权所有
With the help of 35 video cameras and 25 microphones tucked away inside the furniture, the operation done secretly showed something shocking. The most powerful hidden persuader of all isn't in your TV or on the shelves of your supermarket. It's a far more important influence that's around you almost every waking moment: your very own friends and neighbors. There's nothing quite so persuasive as observing someone we respect or admire using a brand or product. 21·cn·jy·com
Our analysis also found that the brands the Morgensons used went viral(像病毒一样) faster. About one third of the Morgensons' friends began promoting (宣传) these same brands to their friends. We also found that the brands their friends were most likely to buy at the Morgensons' suggestion were the bigger and better-known ones. This proved my thoughts that traditional marketing and secret marketing work well together. The most persuasive advertising strategies are strengthened by word-of-mouth advertising.【来源:21cnj*y.co*m】
