Ⅳ.阅读理解
A
Think of London and you will probably remember the bright red double-decker buses. Think of Thailand's capital city, Bangkok, and the noisy tuk-tuks may come to mind. Think of San Francisco and you might see the city's cable cars.
Imagining what these cities would look like without those is difficult. They are symbols of these cities that make them different. However, these city symbols are not always so well loved by their city leaders. City leaders want what is best for their city, which often means the most modern transport.
In Bangkok, city leaders have banned (禁止) tuk-tuks because they consider them noisy and polluting. However, the ban has largely been unsuccessful as it has not changed Thai people's love for the cheap tuk-tuks over taxis.
In London the city's first ever mayor (市长) removed the red double-decker buses, which he thought were old fashioned. His plan worked, but Londoners were unhappy to lose the nice old buses they believed represented the best of their city. They made their unhappiness felt when the mayor came up for re-election. Most Londoners voted for his competitor, who promised to bring the bus back.
As for San Francisco, several cable cars are still in use but mainly as tourist attractions. They are too slow to be used for anything other than scenic trips.
City transport symbols may have a place in their city people's hearts, but it seems they are increasingly out of step with the modern world. As Londoners have proved, their continued life depends on people's willingness to fight for their survival.
1.What's the author's purpose of writing the first paragraph?
A. To introduce some city transport symbols.
B. To explain why some cities are popular.
C. To talk about modern transport in some cities.
D. To attract more tourists to visit some cities.

An artistic student from a school near Rochester, New York decided to get down to a photography project of a different kind.
Each day, Chaz Rorick from Rush-Henrietta High School decided to upload an Instagram photo of himself imitating a U.S. president alongside a photo of the actual president.
Many would agree the impressions are quite familiar.
Rorick's project started when he realized the set of clothes he wore resembled(与……相像) that of President Harry Truman while watching a documentary(纪录片). He took a photo of himself, placed it next to one of Truman, and posted it on Instagram.
He had an instant fan: his father. The next day I did Roosevelt for fun, but by the third picture I did one a day, no matter how busy I was. My friends enthusiastically encouraged me to carry on with such strange and unusual things, the high school junior told Mashable.
According to RochesterHomepage. net, Rorick said of his project,“It was not too much work, maybe half an hour a night doing it, except for the ones with wigs(假发) and mustaches. I cut out paper for it. I taped cotton to my head.”
“It was fun though,” he added. “All my friends supported it. My parents supported it. History teachers are crazy about it.”
Some people hold the view that Rorick's photos are innovative(创新的), entertaining and educational. However, others think everyone can dress up, too, but they have to admit that with all the things out there that Rorick could do in his spare time, there's nothing wrong with this.

答案与解析:C 细节理解题。根据第六段的I taped cotton to my head.可知,他是用棉花做假发。
9.Rorick's history teacher ________.
A. likes his photography project very much

C. is against him

答案与解析:A 细节理解题。根据第七段的History teachers are crazy about it.可知,历史老师觉得这种摄影项目特别赞。be crazy about迷恋,喜欢。故选A。

Even plants can run a fever, especially when they're under attack by insects or disease. But unlike human, plants can have their temperature taken from 3 000 feet away straight up. A decade ago, adopting the infrared (红外线) scanning technology developed for military purposes and other satellites, physicist Stephen Paley came up with a quick way to take the temperature of crops to determine which ones are under stress. The goal was to let farmers precisely target pesticide (杀虫剂) spraying rather than rain poison on a whole field, which invariably includes plants that don't have pest problems.
Even better, Paley's Remote Scanning Services Company could detect crop problems before they became visible to the eye. Mounted on a plane flown at 3 000 feet at night, an infrared scanner measured the heat emitted by crops. The data were transformed into a color-coded map showing where plants were running “fevers”. Farmers could then spot-spray, using 50 to 70 percent less pesticide than they otherwise would.
The bad news is that Paley's company closed down in 1984, after only three years. Farmers resisted the new technology and long-term backers were hard to find. But with the renewed concern about pesticides on produce, and refinements in infrared scanning, Paley hopes to get back into operation. Agriculture experts have no doubt the technology works. “This technique can be used on 75 percent of agricultural land in the United States,” says George Oerther of Texas A & M. Ray Jackson, who recently retired from the Department of Agriculture, thinks remote infrared crop scanning could be adopted by the end of the decade. But only Paley finds the financial backing which he failed to obtain 10 years ago.
1.Plants will send out an increased amount of heat when they are ________.
A. facing an infrared scanner
B. sprayed with pesticides
C. in poor physical condition
D. exposed to excessive sun rays
答案与解析:C 由文章第二段中“..., an infrared scanner measured the heat emitted by crops. The data were transformed into a color-coded map showing where plants were running ‘fevers’”.可知,植物在发“高烧”,也就是说,“身体状况”不佳时才会散发热。
2.In order to apply pesticide spraying precisely, we can use infrared scanning to ________.
A. estimate the damage to the crops
B. draw a color-coded map
C. measure the size of the affected area
D. locate the problem area
答案与解析:D 本题要求判断使用红外线扫描技术的目的。根据文章第二段中“...showing where plants were running ‘fevers’. Farmers could then spot-spray, ...”可知,目的是确定有问题的区域,以便使农民有针对性地喷杀虫剂。
3.Farmers can save a considerable amount of pesticide by ________.
A. resorting to spot-spraying
B. transforming poisoned rain
C. consulting infrared scanning experts
D. detecting crop problems at an early stage
答案与解析:A 根据文章第二段最后一句“Farmers could then spot-spray, using 50 to 70 percent less pesticide than they otherwise would.”可知。
4.The application of infrared scanning technology to agriculture met with some difficulties ______.
A. its high cost
B. the lack of official Support
C. the lack of financial support
D. its failure to help increase production
答案与解析:C 根据文章第三段第一句“The bad news is that Paley's company closed down in 1984, after only three years. Farmers resisted the new technology and long-term backers were hard to find”可知。
5.Infrared scanning technology may be brought back into operation because of ________.
A. full support from agricultural experts
B. growing concern about the excessive use of pesticides on crops
C. the forceful promotion by the Department of Agriculture
D. the desire of farmers to improve the quality of their produce
答案与解析:B 根据文章第三段中“But with the renewed concern about pesticides on produce, and refinements in infrared scanning, Paley hopes to get back into operation.”可知。
