Kong Zi, also called Confucius (551—479 B. C.), and Socrates (469—399 B. C.) lived only a hundred years apart. During their lifetimes there was no contact between China and Greece, but it is interesting to look at how the world that each of these great philosophers came from shaped their ideas, and how these ideas in turn, shaped their societies.
Neither philosopher lived in times of peace, though there were more wars in Greece than in China. The Chinese states were very large and feudal, while the Greek city-states were small and urban. The urban environment in which Socrates lived allowed him to be more radical (激进的) than Confucius. Unlike Confucius, Socrates was not asked by rulers how to govern effectively. Thus, Socrates was able to be more idealistic, focusing on issues like freedom, and knowledge for its own sake. Confucius, on the other hand, advised those in government service, and many of his students went on to government service.
Confucius suggested the Golden Rule as a principle for the conduct of life. “Do not do to others what you would not want others to do to you.” He assumed that all men were equal at birth, though some had more potential (潜能) than others, and that it was knowledge that set men apart. Socrates focused on the individual, and thought that the greatest purpose of man was to seek wisdom. He believed that some had more potential to develop their reason than others did. Like Confucius, he believed that the superior class should rule the inferior (下层的) classes.
For Socrates, the family was of no importance, and the community of little concern. For Confucius, however, the family was the centre of society, with family relations considered much more important than political relations.
Both men are respected much more today than they were in their lifetimes.

“This isn't Disneyland, I'm not a novelty, this is as real as it gets,” sing The Sisters of Invention.
The young women—Annika, Michelle, Jackie, Aimee and Caroline—are a pop group with a difference. All have learning difficulties and some have extra disabilities.
The five are based in Adelaide, Australia, and met in 2010 when they sang together in a choir (合唱队) run by Tutti, an organization which supports disabled artists. Tutti saw they had talent and invited them to form a group. Now they perform together two or three times per month, and this is how they make a living.
Michelle is 25 and has cerebral palsy (脑瘫) and a mild learning disability. She says, “We choose the name The Sisters of Invention because we are like sisters and we support each other on and off stage. For the invention part, we are trying to change people's view of people with disabilities. We are reinventing the rules.”
All their songs are based on the members' own experiences and were written as a group in their twice weekly meetings at Tutti. “We would arrive in the morning and I'd say, ‘What do you want to talk about today?’” says their manager and producer Michael Ross. He then noted down everything they said until lyrics took shape. Ross says that putting “their truth” out there is important. He says, “What I'm interested in is that we get to see the world in a way that people in pop culture almost never get to see. It is creative gold.”
When they perform their songs, the physical side of their disabilities is more obvious, but Ross says, “They're not up there to show their barriers or difficulties. They're up there to show their strengths.”

Every evening Sylvie left her grandmother's house at 5:30 to bring their cow home. The old animal spent her days out in the open country eating sweet grass. When the cow heard Sylvie's voice calling her, she would hide among the bushes, unwilling to go home.
This evening it had taken Sylvie longer than usual to find her cow. The child hurried the cow through the dark forest, following a narrow path that led to her grandmother's home.
“Hello, little girl,” a young man called out cheerfully. “I've been hunting for birds, but I've lost my way.” The young man explained he was a scientist, who searched for birds. “Do you put them in a cage?” Sylvie asked. “No,” he answered, “I shoot them and deal with them with special chemicals to preserve them.”
“I saw a white heron (苍鹭) not far from here two days ago. It's a very rare bird. Have you seen it, too?” he asked Sylvie. Sylvie's heart began to beat fast. She knew that strange white bird! The young man was staring at Sylvie. “I would give $10 to the person who showed me where the white heron is.”
Sylvie had a plan that she would get the $10 for her grandmother and make the young man happy. Her plan was to climb to the top of a tall pine tree to see where the white heron had hidden its nest.
The pine tree seemed to grow taller, the higher that Sylvie climbed. Suddenly a bird with broad white wings flew past Sylvie and landed on a pine branch below her. The white heron sat on its nest in a nearby tree. Sylvie gave a long sigh. She knew the wild bird's secret now. Slowly she began her dangerous trip down the ancient pine tree.
About an hour later Sylvie returned. Both her grandmother and the young man stood up as she came into the kitchen. The splendid moment to speak about her secret had come. But Sylvie was silent. She could not tell the heron's secret and give its life away.

Three years ago, when the closest and largest full moon fell on March 19, 2011, many people used the term, “supermoon”, which we had never heard before. The year before last, we heard this term again, to describe the year's closest full moon on May 6, 2012. Last year, the full moon on June 23, 2013 was also a supermoon.
What does “supermoon” mean, exactly? And how special was the June 23, 2013 supermoon?
The word “supermoon” didn't come from astronomy. Instead, it came from astrology (占星学). In 1979, astrologer, Richard Nolle, defined it as a new or full moon which occurs at or near its closest point to the earth in its orbit. In short, the earth, moon and sun are all in a line, with the moon at its nearest point to the earth.
And the full moon of June 23,2013 was the largest moon of that year. This “supermoon” was at perigee (近地点)—its closest point to the earth in its orbit. It was bigger and brighter than other full moons of 2013. The moon will not be so close again until August, 2014. Astronomers call this sort of close full moon a perigee full at moon.
That doesn't sound very special, does it? In fact, the June, 2013 full moon lined up much more closely with perigee than Nolle's original definition. But_were_you_able_to_notice_with_your_eyes_alone_that_this_full_moon_was_bigger_or_brighter_than_usual?_Astronomers_said_no. But it was fun to stand outside under this full moon and know that the moon was closer than it had been since May 6, 2012.
5.What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A.The definition of “supermoon”.
B.The differences between supermoons.
C.The differences between supermoons and usual full moons.
D.Supermoons in different years.
6.What does the underlined word “it” in the third paragraph probably refer to?
A.Supermoon. B.Astrology.
C.Perigee. D.Astronomy.
根据第三段中的“The word ‘supermoon’...it came from astrology.”
答案:A
7.Which of the following about the June 2013 full moon is NOT true?
A.It was the closest full moon in 2013.
B.It was the largest full moon in 2013.
C.It was brighter than any other full moon.
D.It was at its furthest point from the earth.
根据第四段中的“This ‘supermoon’ was at perigee (近地点)—its closest point to the earth in its orbit.”
8.What can we learn from the underlined sentence in the last paragraph about a supermoon and an ordinary full moon?
A.They both appeared in the sky.
B.Only astronomers could see them.
C.They were attracted to each other.
D.People couldn't tell the difference between them.
