Luling, a small town in Texas, is home to a watermelon water tower, a watermelon queen and a festival called the Watermelon Thump.
The event includes food, music and a parade. But what sets this watermelon festival apart from others is the World Championship Seed Spitting (吐西瓜籽) Contest.
Only about 5,500 people live in Luling. But since 1954, the population has swelled on the last weekend in June. Now, tens of thousands of people come from all around to attend the four-day festival.
“The seed-spitting crowds get into it,” said Edgar Camacho, who is father to four seed-spitting champions. “Parents from Luling take it seriously.”
The competition is limited to about 50 kids and 50 adults. The kids are divided into four age groups. For the individual (个人的) competition, everyone gets two spits, and judges record the better one. For the team event, judges take the sum of four spits from four participants (参与者).
“It's really fun and exciting,” said Victoria Camacho, 14. “The crowd is all watching you and cheering for you, and your family is there.” About 200 people watch. “It's really a lot of pressure because you don't want to mess up.”
Victoria won her age group four years ago with a spit of 36 feet. Two years ago, her brother A. J., 17, broke the youth record in Luling when he spat a seed 58 feet 91/2 inches. That's more than half the length of a basketball court. (The adult seed-spitting world record, set in 1989, is 68 feet 91/8 inches.)
“It's fun to come out and compete every year. It's just a really competitive spirit that all the families have,” said A. J., who has won the seed-spitting contest about 10 times.
The Camachos have no plans to give up their competitive spitting anytime soon.
“Even if I don't live in Texas,” said Davis Camacho, 20, a five-time winner. “I'll make the yearly journey to Luling.”
【文章大意】 本文是一则新闻报道。美国德州的Luling小镇每年举办一次西瓜节,该节日的最特别之处在于其吐西瓜籽比赛。
4.What does the underlined word “swelled” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Increased. B.Doubled.
C.Recovered. D.Dropped.
解析:A 词义猜测题。根据划线词前后句的对比:Only about 5,500 people live in Luling和tens of thousands of people come可知,自1954年开始,Luling小镇的人口在六月最后的那个周末不断增加。
5.What's the rule for the group competition?
A.Everyone gets two spits.
B.The best four spits are recorded.
C.Each team member can spit only once.
D.Participants are divided into four age groups.
解析:C 细节理解题。根据第五段中的For the team event, judges take the sum of four spits from four participants可知,在团体比赛中,每名参赛人员只能吐一次西瓜籽。
6.How does Victoria feel about the competition?
A.Confident and lucky.
B.Stupid and bored.
C.Happy and fearless.
D.Excited and nervous.
解析:D 推理判断题。根据Victoria在第六段中说的It's really fun and exciting和It's really a lot of pressure可知,她认为比赛既刺激又紧张。
7.What can we learn about the competition?
A.It lasts four days.
B.It happens every year.
C.It is an international event.
D.It gets thousands of viewers.
解析:B 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中的The Camachos have no plans to give up their competitive spitting anytime soon以及Camacho的家庭成员之一Davis在最后一段中说的Even if I don't live in Texas和I'll make the yearly journey to Luling可知,吐西瓜籽比赛一年举行一次。这里需要注意D项,尽管文章第三段提到tens of thousands of people come from all around to attend the four-day festival,但是根据第六段中的About 200 people watch可知,该比赛的观众只有几百号人,并没有数以万计那么多。

Sweetest Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in October as a day to make someone happy. It is an occasion which offers all of us an opportunity to remember not only the sick, the aged, and children who have lost their parents, but also friends, workmates, relatives and neighbors whose helpfulness and kindness we have enjoyed.
Over 60 years ago, when a Cleveland man noticed that some people, such as children who lost their parents and patients who lay in bed, too often felt forgotten and neglected(忽视), he developed in his mind the idea of showing them that they were remembered. He did this by giving them small gifts. With the help of his friends and neighbors, he gave those people small gifts on a Saturday in October. During the years that followed, other Clevelanders began to take part in the celebration, which came to be called “Sweetest Day”. Over time, the Sweetest Day idea of spreading cheer to the poor, the sick and children who had lost their parents was broadened to include everyone, and became an occasion for remembering others with a kind act or a small gift. Soon the idea spreaded to other cities all over the USA.
Sweetest Day is not based on any single group'sreligious beliefs or on a family relationship. It is a reminder that a thoughtful word or deed enriches life and gives it meaning.
Because for many people remembering takes the form of gift giving, Sweetest Day offers us the opportunity to show others that we care, in a positive(积极的) way.

The first time I went to the zoo was several years ago, with parents. Yesterday I went to the zoo with some classmates. Arriving here, we got a guidebook and started walking round a zoo. We all got pretty exciting about visiting the animals. But something in their eyes made me to think they might enjoy live in the wild rather than be kept in a cage. One classmate might have guessed what had come in my mind, as he tells me at least in this way we had a good chance to know more about the animals. I don't know. Maybe some days there will have a better way to see and study them.

Living abroad brings many challenges. One of them is looking for the best way to get used to a new culture while not losing your identity. In this process I have noticed that it's very positive to be in touch with expats, especially with expats from your own country. Why? Read on.
I have been in Germany for one year and I have had many experiences. Some of them were more positive than others. But when unexpected things happened, it was nice to meet with other Colombians to listen to their experiences. Through this exchange, I have realized that others have felt the same, and that I am not the only one who has had difficulties. I also believe that they, too, have taken something from my experience.
Colombians are really friendly and usually don't have any problems with meeting new people. This has helped me to increase my social network quickly. When I arrived in Germany, I had two Colombian friends here, and I have kept in touch with one of them who helped me to meet other people, not only Colombians.
Most likely, if you are a foreigner in Germany, your native language is not German. This is the way it is in my case. My native language is Spanish and I really enjoy speaking it. But it's even better when I can share my opinions, thoughts, and worries with other expats, or when I can talk about topics which would not seem interesting to local Germans. Besides, it's possible to use lines and jokes that only those who come from the same country or the same corner of the world can understand.
I like social networks and since I arrived in Germany, I have been connected with other expats through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. On these social networks, I can communicate with others and share my experiences. Meanwhile, I also find interesting information that I don't usually get in other forms of media, such as information about jobs, flats, language courses, offers of Colombian products and events which are not in the local newspapers.

Almost every night for more than ten years, Kirk Alexander, 48, of Salem, Oregon, ordered dinner from his local restaurant Domino's Pizza. Then one day, he stopped calling.
“It had been several days,”Domino's general manager Sarah Fuller said, “which is not like him.”
Sarah had known Kirk since 2009. Many Domino's delivery drivers regularly made the short trip to Kirk's house, about six minutes away. She knew he worked from home and that he hardly went outside. She also knew that he had suffered health problems in the past. Sarah was worried. Perhaps something was wrong.
Around 1 a.m. on Sunday, May 8, Sarah sent delivery driver Tracey Hamblen to Kirk's home. Tracey approached the door as he had countless times before and knocked. He could plainly see the TV set and lights were on, but after several minutes, Kirk still hadn't answered the door. Tracey called Kirk. The call went straight to voice mail.
Tracey then called 911, and soon officers were on their way. When they arrived at Kirk's house, they heard a man calling for help from inside. They broke down the door and found Kirk on the floor in need of immediate medical attention after suffering from what Sarah said was a stroke. One day later, and they might have been too late.
So is keeping an eye on regular customers part of Domino's business plan? Not really, says Sarah. “Kirk is part of our family here,” she said. “We felt like we needed to do something.”
