Ⅰ.阅读理解

As a child, Sue Hendrickson loved to look for buried treasure. She would also walk along streets, looking at the ground and hoping to find interesting things.
One day, Hendrickson visited an amber mine. One piece of amber had an insect in it, and a miner told her that it was 23 million years old. At that moment, Hendrickson knew that she wanted to search for fossils (化石).
In 1990, she traveled to South Dakota with a team of scientists looking for dinosaur bones. The team's car broke down. When the others went to get the car fixed, Hendrickson and her dog stayed behind and went for a walk. On her walk, Hendrickson saw some bones on the ground and then looked up. There, in the high area of rock, was a huge dinosaur skeleton (骨骼)! The group uncovered the biggest, most complete skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus rex (霸王龙) that had ever been found. The T. rex was named “Sue” after its discoverer.
This was not Hendrickson's only adventure. Two years later, she dove with scientists to explore a sunken ship. It was a Spanish trading ship from the 1600s. At it, the scientists found hundreds of huge stone bowls and more than 400 gold and silver coins.
Hendrickson has plans for more adventures. She wants to look for more dinosaur bones and hopes to find a woolly mammoth (长毛象) skeleton. Often, Hendrickson travels to The Field Museum in Chicago, Illinois, her hometown. That is where Sue the T. rex is on display. Sue Hendrickson likes to visit Sue the dinosaur whenever she can.

This journey began this morning almost an hour later than I had planned, although I had completed my packing before eight o'clock. I was quite clear about the fact that once I left, my house would stand empty for probably the first time since the day it was built. It was a strange feeling and perhaps explains why I was leaving so late, walking around the house many times over, checking one last time to see that all was in order.
It is hard to explain my feelings once I did finally set off. As I drove further and further from the house, I found the surroundings (周围的事物) grow unrecognizable. I began to have a feeling of unease mixed with excitement. I took a turning and found myself on a road circling the edge of a hill. I could sense the steep (陡峭的) drop to my left. I felt a sense of alarm that I was perhaps not on the correct road at all, but speeding off in the wrong direction into a wilderness. It was only the feeling of a moment, but it caused me to slow down. And even when I was sure I was on the right road, I felt forced to stop the car a moment to think carefully.
I decided to step out and stretch (伸展) my legs a little. On the one side of the road, thickets and small trees rose sharply, while on the other I could now see the distant countryside and a town nearby.
I walked a little way along the roadside, when I heard a voice behind me. Until this point I had believed myself quite alone and I turned in some surprise. Sitting on the large stone was a thin, white-haired man. He called to me again and signaled me to join him. For a moment, I took him for a homeless man, but then I saw he was just some local man enjoying the fresh air and summer sunshine, and saw no reason not to do so.

The mind of an elephant should not be underestimated. They are intelligent animals born with both excellent memory and artistic talent.Elephants eat about 495 pounds of vegetarian food a day. They spend about 16 hours a day eating, but must walk about 4 miles a day in search of food. The average (通常的) elephant lives about 70 years, and its sharp memory allows it to remember places where it has found food as long as 30 years earlier, even as a baby.
In an elephant's travels, it comes across other elephants also looking for food. Some elephants are friendly, and some are not so nice, Elephants remember every elephant they have ever met. They can even recognize an elephant they perhaps haven't seen for 30 years. They immediately remember whether this elephant is an enemy or a friend.
When elephants are not searching for food, they sometimes produce art in the sand with their trunks(象鼻). They seem to enjoy just relaxing and painting in the sand. One day, an elephant zoo-keeper noticed this and gave an elephant a paint brush filled with red paint to see if the elephant would paint on a canvas (画布). Sure enough, it did, and since then elephants in most zoos have been given paint brushes, paints, and canvases. The resulting abstract (抽象的) art has been sold for high prices around the world. The money goes to support feeding the elephants in the zoos. Most felt that the elephants were only capable of painting abstracts. Snow White is the story of an Evil (邪恶的) Queen who is jealous (妒忌的) of her beautiful step-daughter and asks a huntsman (猎人) to kill her. After the huntsman is unable to complete the task, Snow White runs throughout the forest and finds a small house of seven dwarfs (小矮人). Hearing that the huntsman didn't kill the Snow White from her magic mirror, the Evil Queen takes matters into her own hands and decides to find and kill Snow White herself. Pretending to be an old beggar, the Evil Queen gives Snow White a dangerous apple. Snow White falls into a deep sleep after eating the apple and is later woken up by a handsome Prince. They live happily ever after.
In the original Brothers Grimm tale, the above isn't the end of the story as the Evil Queen unknowingly is invited to the wedding of Snow White and Prince. Once she arrives at Snow White's big day, hot iron shoes are placed in front of her and she is forced to step into the burning shoes and dance until she drops dead. This ending is much darker than that seen in the 1937 Disney film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The Disney film adds a child-like wonder to the tale with the dwarfs each being named and therefore they all have their own personalities: Doc, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, Bashful, Sneezy and Dopey. Also in_variation to the original tale, the Prince and Snow White have met before her eating the apple and Snow White wakes up immediately after the Prince kissed her. They live happily ever after.
The 2012 film Snow White and the Huntsman added something new to the tale. The Huntsman is told to return Snow White to the Evil Queen. If he does that, the Evil Queen Will bring his wife back from the dead. Upon realizing that this was an empty promise, the Huntsman decides to teach Snow White how to fight against the Evil Queen.
The moral (寓意) of the story hasn't changed over time: good will win in the end over evil.

What's the most important thing in a piece of writing? Is it the story, the characters, the description, or the style? Obviously, you can't choose only one. A great work succeeds in combining all of them in a great mix (结合), producing a wonderful work.
In most cases, you're better at one writing element over the rest, and working on your strengths will work to your advantage. Building characters, however, is important to your writing. It's not to be ignored no matter what your case is. So, how do you achieve that?
Make Them Real
This is probably one of the most common pieces of writing advice: make your characters believable. What does it really mean? It means that your characters need to be there for a reason, not just for pushing the story forward. He/ She has a real life, with his/her own fears and dreams, and you have to show this. Your characters don't need to be typical (典型的) to be believable. The unusual ones are even more interesting, but it's your job to make your readers relate to them.
Understand Human Psychology (心理特征)
To build great characters, you'll need to understand people's psychology: what are they thinking about, what are they feeling and experiencing, and why are they doing what they are doing? Get behind the obvious. Be in the backstage with them. Sit them in a chair and let them talk away. If you truly listen, you will learn.
Be Your Character
When you immerse (使沉浸) yourself in your writing, you get lost in that world and you start living in it. This is when the magic happens and you become your character. By putting yourself in your character's shoes, you allow yourself to experience what you're writing about first-hand. The more it feels real to you, the more the readers will feel the same, too.

Living abroad is not for everyone. Though it can certainly be a fun and exciting experience, it can also be filled with difficulties. Before you book the plane ticket, it's a good idea to think carefully about living abroad.
If you've lived in the same town for most of your life, a new place full of new food and things can seem like a dream comes true. Your free time will be filled with exploration and sightseeing. You'll have the opportunity to experience places much older than the United States. However, that feeling will become less and you may find yourself wishing you could just turn on the TV and watch old TV series in English or eat your favorite American meal.
Americans in Europe and South America often find that medical care is both cheaper and easier to get than in the United States. For example, everyone can get a dental (牙齿的) checkup for only around $20 in Turkey. However, you may be disappointed by the lack of familiar medicines. And you may not be able to read the instructions.
The work that the ordinary Americans can do abroad usually pays better than what the ordinary locals do. A full-time teaching job in Ukraine, for example, can help you live a very rich life. However, if you become bored with your position, other job choices are somewhat limited unless you speak the local language as well as English. Moreover, you will probably find that some benefits don't exist for foreigners.
When you live abroad, opportunities for international travel increase greatly. You may be able to take a day trip across the border from your apartment in Budapest to a concert in Vienna or take a boat to Montevideo for a night out after work in Buenos Aires. However, your money may not allow especially comfortable travel and you may have to stay in inexpensive hotels, cook your own food and take long-distance land transportation.

Ⅱ.阅读理解
The number of people in the US without a home is down from one year ago. The total is nearly 550,000, about 3% lower than last year. The number comes from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The information comes after a report from the United Nations that homelessness is “spreading” worldwide. The report asked governments around the world to terminate homelessness by 2030 so that no one would have to live on the streets.
The UN last did a study on the world's homeless population 11 years ago. At that time, it estimated (估计) the total at 100 million. But the UN said the number is likely much higher today. It estimates that 100 million children alone are now without a home.
Recently, in the city of Mosul, Iraq, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development measured (统计) homelessness on a single night. In January, thousands of volunteers spread out across the country. They counted a total of 549,922 homeless people. That is down 14% from six years ago. Still, the government reported increased homelessness in the cities of Los Angeles, Dallas, Seattle and Washington, D.C. Officials thought higher housing prices are responsible for the increase.
Leilani Farha, the top UN official on housing, said homelessness is an issue of life-and-death importance. “The death rate (死亡率) among homeless people is two to ten times higher than that among the people who are not homeless,” she said.
In the Kenyan capital of Nairobi, 250,000 people do not have a place to stay. Many of them are children, and live on the streets. In India, the homeless population is estimated at 78 million. Eleven million of that number are street children. Indonesia's homeless population is 3 million, including 28,000 in the capital, Jakarta. In Nigeria, the homeless population is estimated at 24 million.
