Reality TV has been charged with making the nation silly, but a study suggests part of its shows could be good for children.
Massey University PhD student Jacinta Hawkins looked at the influence of TV programs on kids' health knowledge, attitudes and behavior. She said programs which showed overweight people, such as The Biggest Loser, seem to be putting children off eating junk food. “The appearance of overweight people on TV is making children say ‘I don't want to grow up like that’.”
The research was part of Ms Hawkins' paper on how schools improve health. She spoke to 92 children, aged from 7 to 13, from six Auckland primary schools to find out how they received information on nutrition and physical activity. Some said they learnt from TV news programs, but most of them mentioned reality shows such as Fat Chance, Honey We're Killing the Kids and Downsize Me.
Earlier studies had looked at the effect junk-food advertising had on children, Ms Hawkins said, but messages within TV programs had not been explored. “Children from the six schools largely recognized program content, rather than advertising, as a source of food and physical activity messages. They are learning habits of eating and exercise from TV programs.”
The children also recognized that their parents had a role to play in shaping health behavior. Talking about Honey We're Killing the Kids, which shows how people will look if they continue with good habits, children said they developed attitudes from their family's habits. Ms Hawkins said children remembered what they had seen and thought it was the parents' duty to lead by example.

When we first meet new people, we all feel a little awkward and the key to getting our comfort back is being able to read the other person's body languages. Believe it or not, this is possible even from the very first few seconds when you meet that new person.
Eye contact is very important in communication, especially with new people. Good use of eye contact, which does not avoid the other's, does not stare and does not linger on certain parts of the other's body improperly, is a key part of getting to understand new people. Proper eye contact shows respect and it shows that you are interested in interacting with the other person. How much eye contact to make in different cultures? If you read the other person's body signals correctly, you will see how much eye contact to make.
Posture says a lot about a person's personality and mood. Slouching (低垂的) shoulders and a curved spine (脊柱) says that they are depressed, down and lacking confidence in themselves.
The tilt (倾斜) of a person's head gives away their mood, too. A head which is balanced both horizontally and vertically on the neck shows confidence and self-esteem. When they want to speak or make a particular point, the authoritative, confident person will usually lean their head forward just a little bit, but without taking up too much on the personal space of their listener. If they tilt their head to one side while you are talking, you can be assured that they are listening to you attentively and that they will be likely to give you time to speak and say what you have to say. Of course, this position can change, and it should. Nobody's position should be maintained for too long as that will seem unnatural. If someone stays in one position and doesn't speak for a long time, do check it: he/she may have fallen asleep!

Ⅱ.阅读理解
There is one thing people fear the most when they first meet somebody: eye contact (交流).
As kids, we were taught this by our parents and our social structures. And, for one reason or another, we were taught that eye contact is something we need to avoid.
Think about it. Have you ever talked to a baby? They stare directly into your eyes. Yet, when you talk to an adult, their eyes wander all over the place. It's almost like they have a fear of being seen or exposed.
Eye contact is something that we fear because we've been taught not to look into someone's eyes. It's a learned skill. You see, we're pure (单纯的) when we were born, pure with an open heart, pure in being uneducated.
As we get older, we get beaten up by society. Those life lessons have ruined the pureness of who we are. But if you want to connect with somebody, you want to connect to their soul. If you want to see who they really are, then you need to look inside their eyes because the eyes are the windows to the soul. If somebody looks down or up or around you will see that he/she is nervous or afraid.
Ask any good poker (扑克) player and they will tell you: They read eyes continuously. Do you want to know if Donald Trump is telling the truth? Take a look at his eyes. Look at everything. Don't be afraid to look at somebody's eyes because that's how we were designed and built. We were designed to stare at one another, to admire each other's beauty, admire each other's souls, admire each other's mind, and admire everything.
So, I strongly suggest you start practicing better eye contact. Be more aware of how your eyes wander when you are having a conversation. If you realize it, try to stay focused on others and allow somebody to see you, because eye contact builds trust as well.

Chinese New Year begins on the first day of the lunar year. Chinese households worldwide welcome the New Year with a home-cooked family “reunion (团聚)” feast. Typical Chinese New Year foods carry a symbolic meaning, and they are eaten with the hopes of increasing the family's fortune, health and success. Start planning your meal with some main Chinese New Year dishes from our California Cookbook.
Dumplings
Dumplings represent wealth and good fortune because they are shaped like ingots-blocks of gold used as ancient Chinese currency (货币). Making dumplings is a popular family activity. The fillings (馅) of dumplings are various. If you want to make dumplings at home, try our recipes (食谱) for Beijing-style pigmeat and cabbage dumplings, Lao Yi's boiled beef and vegetable dumplings, or seafood dumplings.
Whole fish
Since the Chinese word for fish is pronounced the same way as the word for richness - yu, eating fish symbolizes wealth. The traditional holiday greeting “nian nian you yu” can mean “richness and success every year,” as well as “may we eat fish every year.” Fish should be prepared whole to represent family unity.
New Year's cake
New Year's cake means nian gao. It is a sticky rice cake. “nian” means “year” and “gao” means “cake”, but nian gao can also mean “sticky cake” or “higher year”, because the pronunciations have double meanings. The cake can be steamed or cut into thin pieces and pan-fried after steaming.
Rice balls
Rice balls are also called tang yuan in Chinese. They are sticky rice balls, usually filled with sweet black sesame (芝麻) or red bean paste (红豆沙). The dessert represents family reunion, as tang yuan sounds like the term “tuan yuan” in Chinese, meaning “reunion”. “yuan” is also the word for “round” and “yuan man” means “togetherness” and “harmony”.

Benjamin Banneker was a largely self-educated astronomer, author and scientist. This was a very important accomplishment for an African-American living during the American Revolution and the early history of the United States. Many people consider him to be the first African-American scientist.
Benjamin Banneker was born in Baltimore County on November 9,1731. Unlike most black children of his day in America, Benjamin was born a freeman and not a slave. He grew up on his family's farm where he worked hard even as a child. He helped with the tobacco crops, cut wood, and did all sorts of chores around the farm.
Growing up, Benjamin had little opportunity for school, He did attend a small Quaker school for a time where he discovered an interest in science and mathematics. Even when he couldn't attend school, Benjamin borrowed many books so he could continue to learn. He became known in the area as an intelligent young man who could fix machines and work out math problems.
Benjamin's legend (传奇故事) continued to grow when he built his own clock. Clocks were very rare in America at that time. The story goes that Benjamin met a businessman with a watch. He made detailed drawings of the internal (内部的) pieces of the watch and studied how it worked. Then, over several years, Benjamin built a larger version of the watch out of wood, which became his own working clock.
As Benjamin grew older, he began to take an interest in the stars. He read books on astronomy and used math to calculate the movement of the stars. He even accurately predicted an eclipse (日食) of the sun. After the Revolutionary War, Benjamin began to use his skills as a surveyor. He got a job working on surveying Washington, D.C., the new capital city of the United States.
Benjamin Banneker died on October 9, 1806. Although he didn't see an end to slavery in his lifetime, his life and accomplishments were used as an example by abolitionists to show what a free black man could do.

It seems that all my friends have been making the decision to put off their college education for a year, and I'm happy for them. But I'm not going to lie, When that call comes and they inform me of their decision to take a year off from college, the joy is bittersweet (甜中有苦的). I hear the excitement in my friends' voices and do my best to share their joy, but in those moments, I can't help envying them. I guess I'm a classic case of the broke college kid, and I am never like the gap-year college students.
At this point, it has happened so many times that I'm really starting to wonder whether I have made the wrong decision by taking the road to higher learning.
Maybe it's a crazy thing to say, but I want that special moment very much. I want everyone close to me to say “hooray!” after I make the difficult decision of putting off the student loan (贷款) debt so that I can travel across Europe for a year instead. I hope that everyone will be proud of me and the big smile of relief will appear on my face.
However, I can't help but wonder: will my mom ever get the chance to plan a party while I make a decision to travel the world for a year? At the party, will my parents ever get the chance to smile at me with pride as I listen to their speech about how proud they are without a care in the world? I feel sorry for them. And after all these years, will I ever be the one not taking out private student loans to provide money for my expensive college education?
It's depressing to think about, but I may never hear the government say, “You did a great job. High-five.” I made the decision not to increase the already too high student loan debt of the country. But the people in the government only stay in their offices, completely unaware of the struggle of college students with student loans.
