Have you ever been on a student exchange? How useful was it? We asked three people for their opinions.
Ellen
I spent 8 days in Stuttgart (Germany) when I was studying for my A levels. I went to school with my exchange partner every day, and spent the evenings with her family. It was great because I had to speak German all the time. However, the most useful thing was that I was focusing more on communicating with the language, rather than speaking perfectly correct German. It also made me more confident because people could understand what I was talking about. I'd certainly recommend (推荐) it to other students studying languages.
Frank
I went on an exchange with my class for a week in Madrid (Spain). Before the exchange, I thought my understanding of grammar was pretty good, but I struggled with listening and speaking. So, it was good to be in a place where I had no choice but to use my language skills. It also helped me learn the kind of Spanish that people use when they're speaking, rather than the language from books. If I had the opportunity, I'd certainly take part in another language exchange.
Alice
I took part in a French exchange. It lasted one week and I stayed with my exchange family in a small town just outside Paris. I'm quite a shy person, so the first few days were a bit frightening, but then it was fine. I love French and my level has always been good. But the exchange really helped develop my speaking skills, and made me a much more confident person. It felt great to be able to talk with native French people. I also found that everyone who took part in the exchange did a lot better in their end-of-year exams. I would certainly recommend an exchange.

My grandmother has lived alone for more than twenty-five years. “Why don't you and Craig come over for dinner?” she often asks. “I've made meatloaf (烘肉卷).” “Sure, that sounds great!” I often say. And then I call my husband and ask him to stop at my grandmother's. Sometimes he has already passed her town, but there is no such thing as “driving out of the way” when it comes to her cooking.
I don't remember the first time when I ate the meatloaf, but I do remember that I was very young at the time. It's not something that I eat anywhere else. And I certainly don't order it at restaurants. As a rule, I don't even eat that much meat. It is the most delicious food that has ever entered my mouth. Best served when fresh from the oven, the first bite is always soft and tender. Maybe if I had her recipe, I could explain it more precisely.
Last July, my grandmother called to ask me what I wanted for my birthday. That was an easy enough question to answer. “I would like meatloaf!” I said. “I think I can do that,” she said. On my twenty-ninth birthday, my husband, my parents and I gathered around my grandmother's table. We ate slice after slice. Then she gave me some meatloaf to take home. I didn't want to share it with my husband, but I did. It was a great birthday.
This year was a big one. I turned thirty. “Let's go out for dinner,” my husband suggested. “Don't you want something special?” my mom asked. I wanted my grandmother's meatloaf. That would make it special. My grandmother went shopping for ground beef, potatoes, and a couple of heads of cabbage. And on the night of my birthday, we gathered at my parents' house for dinner. It was a fabulous dinner.

One Illinois father and his pre-teen son have made a very important agreement. Whenever the son is practicing to stand again after his brain injury left him in a wheelchair, the father will work on his health, too, by working out.
This week, Rick posted pictures online showing off their progress, saying: “He used to be in a coma (昏迷); I used to be a fat guy. Now we're both recovering.” Reece can now stand for up to 90 minutes at a time, and Rick has lost an impressive 70 pounds.
In May of 2008, when Reece was four, he was in a car accident that left him with a brain injury. He was put on life support, spending four months holed up in a hospital. The youngster has been working on his recovery ever since.
Reece had been making so much progress in his stander that his dad was inspired to make some progress of his own. That was two years ago when Rick realized he needed to lose weight.
Now, whenever Reece is in his stander, Rick is on the treadmill (脚踏车). The two work out about five times a week. Jennifer, Rick's wife, has even joined in too, resulting in a “pretty important lifestyle change” for the whole family. While Rick and Jennifer's hope for Reece is that he will one day be able to walk independently, Rick wants to run a half-marathon in the fall.
“Reece is a fighter and has such willpower and determination. It allows us to keep pushing him and keep raising the standard higher,” Rick said.
They also continue through setbacks, including when, two months ago, Reece underwent an 11-hour operation. The young kid even insisted that he didn't want to take pain medication, leaving his doctor in awe (敬畏之心).
“At the end of the day, our goals for him are just to put him in the best position to achieve anything he puts his mind to,” Rick said. “If he's willing to do the work, we'll always be right beside him to support him.”

Ⅱ.阅读理解
I am a volunteer at Seattle Children's Hospital, the most friendly and comfortable place around for those who are recovering, sick, or dying between the ages of 0 to 18. My first day one-on-one with a patient arrived after hours of training and preparation. I shook slightly as the doctor handed me a small white piece of paper with patient information, telling me only about the name, age, and room number. The elevator ride to the floor seemed totally too fast. I walked through the long halls until I reached a door with the room number that matched (匹配) the one on my paper. I read the sign on the door: SCCA-Seattle Cancer Care Alliance.
I entered my patient's room, and was greeted by a tired mother in great need of a break. And this sweet, excited little 6-year-old girl, who's smiling and showing willingness to play made me completely ignore her bald (秃) little head. My newfound friend was quite possibly the most normal 6-year-old girl I had ever met.
Time flew by, and it was easy to notice that we greatly enjoyed each other's being around. But, towards the end of my stay, she asked me if she could play with my hair. As I readily agreed, it hit me that she was not a common little girl. She was bald because of cancer, so she wondered what it was like to play with my hair. As she repeatedly tried to perfect the braids (辫子) in my hair, I realized that the warmth pouring from her heart could not be ignored. I felt proud that I could play a part in the lives of those lovable little children.
During the months that I spent in working one-on-one with the patients at Seattle Children's Hospital, I never met one who was unhappy to see me. They liked to play with me, sometimes putting the room in a mess. In fact, it has come to be that these children, the “little disasters,” brighten my day more than anyone else ever could.

The state of Colorado has four of the 58 national parks in the United States. These have been judged the best places of all the national parks.
Black Canyon (峡谷) of the Gunnison National Park
This park lies in western Colorado and offers the most impressive views from up in the mountains into the canyons below. While exploring the canyons, you will find that the walls drop nearly straight down into very narrow valleys with snake-like rivers below. Visitors are offered more than 100 camping sites, and a lot of bird species and many animals are native to the area.
Rocky Mountain National Park
It is the only national park in the north central region in the state of Colorado. Elevations (高地) in this park you will find are anywhere from 8,000 feet to 14,259 feet at the top of Longs Peak. While travelling throughout this park, you will find there are two very different climates because of the fact that the tops of the Rocky Mountains make a difference. With 359 miles of trails for hiking, there are a lot of places for camping, horseback riding and just enjoying the sights of nature.
Mesa Verde National Park
This is probably the most interesting of all the national parks, offering an extremely interesting trip back in time to 600 A.D. up to 1300 A.D. This park was declared (宣布) a protected national park in 1906 because of the cliff dwellings (住人的崖洞) that were found throughout the park area, which was once home to American Indians. Visitors can actually walk through these dwellings, and they may imagine what each room may have been used for so many years ago.
Great Sand Dunes (沙丘) National Park
The Great Sand Dunes National Park lies in south central Colorado, about 127 miles from Pueblo. This park has the tallest sand dunes in all of North America, with trails for hiking. Natural sandy beaches there are good for people who want to swim around the small rivers and lakes.

A healthy lifestyle includes many choices. Among them, choosing a balanced diet or healthy eating plan is of the greatest importance. But how do you choose a healthy eating plan? Let's begin by explaining what a healthy eating plan is.
A healthy eating plan that helps you manage your weight includes different kinds of foods you may not have considered. If “healthy eating” makes you think about the foods you can't have, try refocusing on all the new foods you can eat.
Fresh, Frozen, or Canned Fruits-don't think about just apples or bananas. All fresh, frozen, or canned fruits are great choices. Be sure to try some fruits from other countries, too. How about a mango, a juicy pineapple or kiwi fruit? What you should pay attention to about canned fruits is that they may contain added sugars. You'd better choose canned fruits packed in water or in their own juice.
Fresh, Frozen, or Canned Vegetables-try something new. Don't eat the same kinds of vegetables all the time. You can try to eat different kinds of vegetables, which is important for a good diet. When trying canned vegetables, look for vegetables without added salt or butter. You can go to the produce department (果蔬部) and try a new vegetable each week.
Calcium-rich foods-you may firstly think of a glass of low-fat or fat-free milk when someone says “Eat more dairy products.” But what about low-fat and fat-free yogurts without added sugars? There is a wide variety of flavors and they can be a great dessert instead of those with a sweet tooth.
What's more, you don't need to give up your favorite comfort food. You can enjoy your favorite foods even if they are high in calories, fat or added sugars. The key is eating them only once in a while, and balancing them out with healthier foods and more physical activity.
The point is that you can figure out how to include almost any food in your healthy eating plan in a way that still helps you lose weight or maintain a healthy weight.

Imagine sitting in a classroom and not being able to see a picture that your teacher is showing. Imagine driving a car, not knowing that your vision is so bad and that driving is dangerous to you and others. __1__
That is because there are not enough eye specialists (眼科医生) to find and treat eyesight problems in many poor nations. In some developing countries, there is only one eye specialist for every eight million people. __2__ He started the group Global Vision 2020, which is working to bring eye tests and low-cost eyeglasses to people in developing countries.
__3__ That is too much for most people in many developing countries where many earn $2 a day or less, White said. White has developed a low-cost tool that teachers, nurses, and almost anyone can be trained to use and quickly learn if children or adults need glasses.
White showed his system at a coffee shop near Global Vision's office in Easton, Maryland. In less than five minutes, he tested the eyesight of a woman who could not see things well a short distance away. He then picked out the correct lenses (镜片) for her, and placed them into a frame. __4__ This meant she could see a group of letters about six meters away.
__5__ For example, White said, studies show that people with vision problems drop out of school at higher rates than those with normal vision. He believes many car accidents are caused by people who need but do not have glasses. So people with eyesight problems should be helped to see normally.
A.She could then see normally.

Ⅱ.阅读理解
I recently booked tickets to take my children, aged seven and nine, to see The Railway Children at the theatre. Thinking they may get more out of it if they already knew the story, I ordered the book to read to them. I'm slightly ashamed (羞愧的) to say we only managed to read a few parts of the book. While everyone loved the film and the play was excellent, as far as a reading experience goes, for me at least, it was quite hard to stand.
It wasn't because the language was difficult, but because the writer seemed to use 10 sentences when one would probably work. But, as a book-lover, hoping that my children would read widely, I thought, “Is it important that they read the classics (经典著作)?”
My friend Pandora thinks children's classics are just for school. She said, “Unless they had great adventure, then they won't keep the parent or the kid gripped while reading together.”
Another friend of mine Clare believes it is important that her children read the classics and revisit them again when they are older.
Camilla, my sister-in-law, makes a very good point that books like The Railway Children were written in a different period of time with a different lifestyle in mind. She said, “I think the issue is that books are written for people who have less time now, while the classics were people's entertainment, so the writing had to be long and drawn out.”
Nowadays, children may feel that when they read a book from the past, they have to struggle through a lot of difficult writing, only to find that not much happens. If that's the case, they might enjoy the books more in simplified versions (简化版) or by having the books read to them as a bedtime story.
“Some people seem to refuse books in simplified versions, but I don't think there's anything wrong with reading a classic novel in a simplified version first, and then later in life moving to the full version,” Camilla said. It sounds like excellent advice.
