A 49-year-old homeless man called Dave Tally in Arizona found a bag full of cash and made a great decision: He would return it.
Tally was in debt, jobless and had lost his driver’s license. Most nights, he slept at a church-based homeless shelter run by Tempe Community Action Agency. During the day, with nowhere else to go, he walked the streets. That is where he found a backpack full of cash, $3,300.
The $3,300 could have gotten Tally out of his hole. He thought about the things he could pay for a cheap apartment and a bike. The wish list was not hard to make for a man who had spent six years homeless. But he decided that was the wrong thing to do. So, he tracked down the owner of the cash, a college kid named Bryan Belanger who had planned to use the money to buy a car to replace one he’d lost in an accident.
Meeting Belanger and hearing the student thank and praise him for his honesty and kindness made Tally feel good about himself. He hadn’t had that feeling in a while. When word got out that Tally had turned in the cash instead of keeping it, the national media came looking for him. Donations poured in, and Tally suddenly found himself with $10, 000. But he was determined not to waste it.
He began paying off his bills, clearing up his driving records, and taking the long road back. He even moved into a no-frills (简朴的) apartment across from the shelter as “a reminder of where I’ve been and where I’m not going back again.”
One year later, Tally landed his “dream job,” managing a community garden. Recently, Tally started managing a program that allows people who are homeless to volunteer in the garden.
59. Where did Dave Tally find the backpack full of cash?

Thousands of people began pouring into Pennsylvania from other states. They wanted to buy lottery tickets(彩票). The tickets cost only $0.9 each. But that small spending could bring them a reward of $90 million. That was second largest lottery jackpot in history.
More than 87 million tickets were bought for the Pennsylvania lottery drawing. Those who bought tickets had to choose seven numbers from 1 to 80. The chance of winning was one in 9.6 million, but that little chance certainly didn’t affect ticket sales. In the last few days before the drawing, tickets were sold at the unbelievable rate of 500 per second.
Experts say many people buy lottery because they just want to have a piece of the action. Others say the lottery is a stock market for poor people. It allows them to dream about wealth they’ll probably never have.
But many people believe lotteries are no better than legalized gambling. Some critics note that most people who play are poor and may not be able to afford the tickets. There are also many addicts who take the game seriously. They may pour their life savings into lottery tickets. Some clubs have been formed to help them kick the habit.
Politicians like lotteries because they provide money that would otherwise have to come from new taxes. The profits from lotteries are usually used to pay for education or programs for senior citizens. But critics say this arrangement just allows states to legalize vice(恶行), under the name of social progress. No matter whether you regard state lotteries right or not , you cannot refuse to accept their extreme popularity with many Americans.
63. What is the largest number of the lottery jackpot in history?
A.$90 million. B.$9.6 million. C.$87 million. D. Not mentioned in the passage.
64. Many investors think lotteries________.
A. can provide them with more fortune
B. provide them with a chance to have piece of the action
C. are stock markets for poor people
D. are no better than legalized gambling
65. What’s the author’s attitude towards the action of buying the lottery tickets?
A. Supportive B. Opposite C. Objective D. Enthusiastic
D
When something goes wrong, it can be very satisfying to say, "Well, it's so-and-so's fault. "or "I know I'm late, but it's not my fault; the car broke down. " It is probably not your fault, but once you form the habit of blaming somebody or something else for a bad situation, you are a loser. You have no power and could do nothing that helps change the situation. However, you can have great power over what happens to you if you stop focusing on whom to blame and start focusing on how to remedy the situation. This is the winner's key to success.
Winners are great at overcoming problems. For example, if you were late because your car broke down, maybe you need to have your car examined more regularly. Or, you might start to carry along with you the useful phone numbers, so you could call for help when in need. For another example, if your colleague causes you problems on the job for lack of responsibility or ability, find ways of dealing with his irresponsibility or inability rather than simply blame the person. Ask to work with a different person, or don't rely on this person. You should accept that the person is not reliable and find creative ways to work successfully regardless of how your colleague fails to do his job well.
This is what being a winner is all about-creatively using your skills and talents so that you are successful no matter what happens. Winners don't have fewer problems in their lives; they have just as many difficult situations to face as anybody else. They are just better at seeing those problems as challenges and opportunities to develop their own talents. So, stop focusing on "whose fault it is. " Once you are confident about your power over bad situations, problems are just stepping stones for success.
66. According to the passage, winners________________.
A. deal with problems rather than blame others B. meet with fewer difficulties in their eyes
C. have responsible and able colleagues D. blame themselves rather than others
67. The underlined word “remedy” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to__________.
A. avoid B. accept C. improve D. consider
68. When your colleague brings about a problem, you should .
A. find a better way to handle the problem B. blame him for his lack of responsibility
C. tell him to find the cause of the problem D. ask a more able colleague for help
69. When problems occur, winners take them as .
A. excuses for their failures B. barriers to greater power
C. challenges to their colleagues D. chances for self-development
70. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. A Winner's Achievement B. A Winner's Problem
C. A Winner's Opportunity D. A Winner's Secret
第二节(共5小题:每小题3分,满分15分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
Why do some people have many friends while others do not? 71 However, it is not so. Let’s look at two psychological experiments which will give you the key to happy interpersonal relations.
The first experiment is called the “Hawthorne effect” after Hawthorne, Illinois, where the experiment took place. A group of psychologists examined the work patterns of two groups of workers in the Western Electric Company. 72 .The psychologists changed the working conditions for one group twice but left the other group alone. They were surprised to find that productivity increase on both occasions and in both groups. They concluded that the increase in productivity came from the attention given to the workers by the management. It had increased their motivation (积极性) and so they had worked harder. In other words, if you take an interest in others ,they will want to please you and you will have good relations with them.
73 After Martin Luther King, Jr was killed in the 1960s, a teacher, Jane Elliott, living in an all–white town decided to help her class of young children understand why the Civil Rights Movement had been necessary in America.
She divided the class into two groups: one with blue eyes and the other with brown eyes. Other eye colours such as hazel or green were excluded from his exercise. Then she told the class that brown – eyed people were cleverer than blue – eyed ones because of an agent (化学作用) for brown colour found in their blood. Blue – eyed people were stupid, lazy and not to be trusted. Jane Elliott did not need to say any more. The brown – eyed students quickly got used to their new role as the leaders of the class. The blue – eyed students became quiet and withdrawn. Then she discovered something very interesting. Four poor brown – eyed readers began to read fluently in a way they had never done before. 74 . So if you want to be successful and happy, take an interest in others whether they are your classmates or workmates. Congratulate them on their successes and sympathize(同情) with them in their troubles. 75.
A. Before the experiment the management talked to both groups of workers and explained that they wanted to find the best working environment for them.
B. Remember that the way you treat others will decide their attitude and behaviour to you.
C. The second experiment shows what happens to personal relations if you are rude to or ignore(忽略)others.
D. The ones who have more friends usually are those who care about others.
E. Jane Elliott had shown that the way people are treated affects not only their behaviour but also their confidence and their performance.
F. You may even imagine that this ability was something they were born with because it seems so effortless to them.
G. The second experiment tells us what teachers said has a great effect on the students.

第三部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题,每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项A、B、C、D中,选出最佳选项。
A
The black and white bird came ashore on a beach in the south of the North Island nearly 4,000 miles away from its usual habitat. The creature’s astonishing journey was witnessed by a woman walking her dog as the two-foot bird waddled out of the water in front of her. She said, “It was out of this world to see it. It was this glistening white thing standing up on the sand and I thought I was seeing things.” The tale of the lost penguin is similar to the 2006 children’s film Happy Feet, in which a young penguin finds himself far from home during a voyage of discovery. Conservationists believe it has completed an incredible journey for such a young bird — it is estimated to be around 10 months old. The most likely explanation for its appearance in New Zealand is the hunt for food. Experts said it may also have rested on an ice floe (浮冰) during its travels and was carried north for a great distance before it made a swim for dry land. Colin Miskelly, a curator of New Zealand Museum, said, “They can spend months at a time in the ocean and come ashore only to moult (脱毛,换毛)or rest.” Mr. Miskelly said the brave bird would have to find its way back south soon if it was going to survive. He said, “It is probably hot and thirsty and has been eating wet sand.” “It doesn’t realize that the sand isn’t going to melt inside it because they typically eat snow — their only liquid.” New Zealand residents have been warned to give the bird a wide berth — it can inflict (予以) painful bites if threatened.
56. Which of the following is True of Paragraph 1?
A. A young penguin found himself far from home during a voyage of moulting.
B. A creature’s astonishing journey was incredible in the north of the North Island.
C. A woman witnessed a 2 feet bird waddled in the children’s film while walking her dog.
D. A penguin came ashore on a beach thousands of miles away from its habitate.
57. Conservationists tend to explain that____________.
A. the young bird has completed a pleasant journey of 4,000 thousand miles
B. the young bird’s appearance in New Zealand is due to its hunt for food and delay of returning
C. the young bird comes ashore in New Zealand only to moult or rest during its voyage
D. the young bird is certain to be over 10 months old when it appears on a beach
58. What do we know about the penguin according to Mr. Miskelly?
A. The penguin could spend months at a time in the ocean and came ashore only to have young ones.
B. The young bird might have slept on an ice floe and could not swim for dry land.
C. The young penguin didn’t realize the sand wasn’t going to melt inside it like snow it eats.
D. The brave bird would have to find its way back north soon if it was going to survive.
59. What does the underlined part mean in the last sentence?
A. The residents should keep well away from it when they want to watch the young penguin.
B. Some people do not realize the danger of the young bird and they are expected to touch it.
C. New Zealand residents want to keep the young bird but it wants to leave the shore.

The time of year a baby is born can shape what profession they will embark on (从事) in later life, a new study has suggested. Being born in a certain month appears to indicate the statistical likelihood of what job a person will end up with, the study by the Office for National Statistics found. Researchers have uncovered that the month in which babies are born could also affect everything from intelligence to length of life.
A child born December is more likely to become a dentist while someone whose birthday falls in January will tend to a debt collector, they found. A February birth appears to increase the chances of being an artist while March babies appear to go on to become pilots. Meanwhile, April and May are said to have a fairly even spread of professions, births in the summer months mean a much lower chance of becoming a high-earning football player, doctor or dentist.
The study was derived (推导出) by researchers who analyzed the birth months of people in 19 separate occupations using information from the last census, the Daily Mail reported. Although these trends may be difficult to explain, correlations (关联) between birth months and specific health problems have a scientific basis. Spring babies are at greater risks of illnesses including schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease, asthma and autism. They may also be less clever than classmates born in other parts of the year.
60. What is the main idea of this passage?
A.The year when a baby is born may not be associated with the job he or she will end up with.
B. Researchers have found the birth month could affect both intelligence and length of life.
C. The birth time can give signs of future development of what professions people will start.
D. The study indicates there are correlations between birth months and some terrible risks.
61. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. A child born in December is more likely to become an artist while someone born in January will tend to be a dentist.
B. A February birth appears to have the possibilities of being an artist while March babies appear to become pilots.
C. Children born in April and May are said to have equally balanced chances in their future professions.
D. Births in the summer months mean they have few chances to earn a lot of money as a football player, doctor or dentist.
62. What do the researchers also study besides the analyses of the trends between birth months and professions?
A. Some serious diseases from births of many children.
B. A lot of mental illnesses caused by giving birth to children.
C. The secret of births and healthy problems.
D. The relationship between birth months and certain health problems.
C
The Sauna World Championships (世界桑拿锦标赛) ended in tragedy at the weekend when one of the two finalists collapsed and died. Vladimir Ladyzhenskiy, a Russian amateur wrestler in his 60s, suffered severe burns in the bizarre(怪诞的) annual event in the southern Finnish town of Heinola. He was pronounced dead late on Saturday after he collapsed alongside reigning (卫冕) champion Timo Kaukonen of Finland roughly six minutes into the final round. The “sport” calls on participants to sit in a 230-degree (110 Celsius) room as water was tossed onto a searing stove, officials and witnesses said. Medical workers pulled both men out of the sauna in front of nearly 1,000 horrified spectators.
Both were shaking and bleeding from what appeared to be severe burns, said Hakon Eikesdal, a photographer with the Norwegian daily Dagbladet. Kaukonen, about 40, was in hospital in stable condition Sunday, contest spokesman Ossi Arvela said. The event, which had over 130 participants from 15 countries, had been held since 1999. It will never be held again, Arvela said. A pint of water is added to the stove every 30 seconds and the last person to remain at the sauna is the winner. There was no prize other than “some small things” Arvela said. He declined to provide details. Arvela said Kaukonen — the defending world champion — had refused to leave the sauna despite getting sick. Sauna bathing is a popular past-time in Finland, which has an estimated 1.6 million saunas for a population of 5 million. Temperatures are normally kept around 158 to 176 degrees (70~80 degrees Celsius). “I know this is very hard to understand to people outside Finland who are not familiar with the sauna habit,” Arvela said. “It is not so unusual to have 110 degrees in a sauna. A lot of competitors before have sat in higher temperatures than that.” Arvela said all rules in Saturday’s competition were followed and the temperatures and times were similar to those in previous years.
63. Which of the following is True of Paragraph 1?
A.Only the Russian amateur wrestler suffered severe burns in the Sauna World Championships.
B. Timo Kaukonen won a world sauna championship though he was badly burned.
C. In the Sauna World Championships Vladimir Ladyzhenskiy was badly burned and then died.
D. Both of the finalists were pulled out of the sauna, then they were horrified to death.
64. The underlined word “searing” means “__________”.
A. burning B. comfortable C. warm D. extinct
65. What can we conclude from the situation after the tragedy?
A. There was no prize other than “some small things”, which the world champion would refuse to accept.
B. Ossi Arvela suggested there were great risks in the sauna contest and it never be held in the future.
C. The contest would be continued in which the temperatures were kept around 158 to 176 degrees.
D. It was unusual to have 110 degrees in a sauna and it was hard to understand to some people outside.
66. We can infer from the news that ___________.
A. sauna is so popular that there are often competitions on weekdays in Finland.
B. the temperatures in usual saunas are too high for most people to stand in Finland.
C. the sauna contest is much too horrible even for the spectators in Finland.
D. there is a sauna for more than three people on average in Finland.

They say money doesn’t grow on trees. But it certainly appears to do so on the mysterious coin-studded(嵌满) trunks dotted around the UK’s woodland. The strange phenomenon of old trees with coins fixed firmly all over their bark has been spotted on trails from the Peak District to the Scottish Highlands. The coins are usually knocked into felled (砍伐的) tree trunks using stones by passers-by, who hope it will bring them good fortune.
These fascinating spectacles often have coins from centuries ago buried deep in their bark and warped by the passage of time. The tradition of making offerings to gods at wishing trees dates back hundreds of years, but this combination of the man-made and the natural is far more rare. It used to be believed that god’s spirits lived in trees, and they were often decorated with sweets and gifts — as is still done today at Christmas. The act is like tossing money into ponds for good luck, or the trend for couples to attach “love padlocks” to bridges and fences to symbolize lasting romance. Some pubs, such as the Punch Bowl in Askham, Cumbria, have old timbers with splits in them into which coins are forced for luck. There are seven felled tree trunks with coins pushed into them in the picturesque village of Portmeirion, in Wales.
Meurig Jones, an estate manager at the tourist destination, told the BBC, “We had no idea why it was being done when we first noticed the tree trunk was being filled with coins. I did some detective work and discovered that trees were sometimes used as ‘wishing trees’. In Britain it dates back to the 1700s — there is one tree somewhere in Scotland which apparently has an old coin stuck into it. ” He said that a sick person could press a coin into a tree and their illness would go away. If someone then takes the coin out though, it’s said they then become ill. We haven’t made it known at all, it’s just happened,” he added. “It’s quite amazing really.” In Scotland, there is also a legend about a kissing tree. If a young man could drive a nail into a tree with one blow, he earned a kiss from his sweetheart.
67. What was the real reason why in UK people knocked coins into the old trees?
A. It was hoped that it would bring them good future and make the trees more beautiful.
B. Nobody knew why there was such a strange custom that it could make them lucky.
C. It might come from the tradition of making offerings to gods hundreds of years ago.
D. It was said that god’s spirits lived in trees and doing so could please the gods of the trees.
68. The underlined part in Paragraph 2 may mean ____________.
A. this combination of the man-made and the natural is far from realistic.
B. the mysterious phenomenon of old trees with coins is rarely seen in the world.
C. people wanted to make the works of art with the help from the forces of nature.
D. the appearance of trees would be nicer than their original.
69. The passage mainly tells us that________.
A. some people attached “love padlocks” to bridges and fences to symbolize lasting romance
B. a particular way in which people made good wishes is still popular in the UK
C. visitors tossed money into ponds for good luck just as they knocked coins into the trees
D. a long history of a strange phenomenon of old trees with coins in the UK
70. Which of the following can be used as the best title for the passage?
A. Who Says Money Doesn’t Grow on Trees?
B. Do Trees with Some Coins Become Valuable?
C. Is It Really Amazing to Have Coins Fixed into Trees?
D. What Is the Purpose of Knocking Coins into Trees?

When we say that Cambridge is a university town we do not mean that it is a town with a university in it.
71 The university is not just one part of the town; it is all over the town. The heart of Cambridge has its shops, restaurants, market places and so on, but most of it is university, colleges, libraries, clubs and other places for university staff and students. 74 so nearly all of them use bicycles. Don’t try to drive through Cambridge during the five minutes between lectures, as you will find crowds of people on bicycles hurrying in all directions. If you are in Cambridge at five minutes to the hour any morning of the term, you’ll know that you are in a university town. 75 .
A. Colleges were opened so that students could live cheaply.
B. Students are not allowed to keep cars in Cambridge,
C. Many students were short of money for their education, so college towns were set up then.
D. A university town is one where there is no clear separation between the university buildings
and the rest of the city.
E. Stop in some safe place, and wait.
F. The size of Cambridge University is not so big as the town.

A
The easy way out isn’t always the easiest. I learned that lesson when I decided to treat Doug, my husband of one month, to a special meal. I glanced through my cook book and chose a menu which included homemade bread. Knowing the bread would take time. I started on it as soon as Doug left for work. As I was not experienced in cooking, I thought if a dozen was good, two dozen would be better, so I doubled everything. As Doug loved oranges, I also opened a can of orange and poured it all into the bowl. Soon there was a sticky dough covered with ugly yellowish marks. Realizing I had been defeated, I put the dough in the rubbish bin outside so I wouldn’t have to face Doug laughing at my work. I went on preparing the rest of the meal, and, when Doug got home, we sat down to Cornish chicken with rice. He tried to enjoy the meal but seemed disturbed. Twice he got up and went outside, saying he thought he heard a noise. The third time he left, I went to the windows to see what he was doing. Looking out, I saw Doug standing about three feet from the rubbish bin, holding the lid up with a stick and looking into the container. When I came out of the house, he dropped the stick and explained that there was something alive in our rubbish bin. Picking up the stick again, he held the lid up enough for me to see. I felt cold. But I stepped closer and looked harder. Without doubt it was my work. The hot sun had caused the dough to double in size and the fermenting yeast(酵母) made the surface shake and sigh as though it were breathing. I had to admit what the living thing was and why it was there. I don’t know who was more embarrassed by the whole thing—Doug or me.

B. She didn’t use the right kind of flour.
C. The cookbook was hard to understand.
D. She did not follow the directions closely.
58、Why did the woman put the dough in the rubbish bin?
A. She didn’t see the use of keeping it. B. She meant to joke with her husband.
C. She didn’t want her husband to see it. D. She hoped it would soon dry in the sun.
59、What made the dough in the bin looks frightening?
A. The rising and falling movement. B. The strange-looking marks.

My father's reaction to the bank building at 43rd Street and Fifth Avenue in New York city was immediate and definite: "You won't catch me putting my money in there!" he declared, "Not in that glass box !"
Of course, my father is a gentleman of the old school, a member of the generation to whom a good deal of modern architecture is upsetting, but I am convinced that his negative response was not so much to the architecture as to a violation of his concept of the nature of money .
In his generation money was thought of as a real commodity (实物)that could be carried, or stolen. Consequently, to attract the custom of a sensible man, a bank had to have heavy walls, barred windows, and bronze(青铜)doors, to affirm the fact, however untrue, that money would be safe inside. If a building's design made it appear impenetrable(难以渗透的), the institution(公共机构, 协会, 制度)was necessarily reliable, and the meaning of the heavy wall as an architecture symbol dwelt in the prevailing attitude toward money.
But the attitude toward money has, of course, changed. Excepting pocket money, cash of any kind is now rarely used; money as a tangible(切实,实在)commodity has largely been replaced by credit. A deficit (赤字) economy, accompanied by huge expansion, has led us to think of money as product of the creative imagination. The banker no longer offers us a safe: he offers us a service in which the most valuable element is the creativity for the invention of large numbers. It is in no way surprising, in view of this change in attitude, that we are witnessing the disappearance of the heavy-walled bank.
Just as the older bank emphasized its strength, this bank by its architecture boasts of imaginative powers. From this point of view it is hard to say where architecture ends and human assertion (人们的说法)begins.
61、The main idea of this passage is that ________.
A.money is not as valuable as it was in the past
B.the architectural style of the older bank is superior to that of the modern bank
C.changes have taken place in both the appearance and the concept of banks
D.prejudice makes the older generation think that the modern bank is unreliable
62、How do the older generation and the younger one think about money?
A.The former thinks more of money than the latter.
B.The younger generation values money more than the older generation.
C.Both generations rely on the imaginative power of bankers to make money.
D.To the former money is a real commodity but to the latter it is a means to produce more money.
63、According to this passage, a modern banker should be _____.
A.imaginative and creative B.reliable and powerful
C.sensible and impenetrable D.ambitious and friendly
64、It can be inferred from the passage that the author's attitude towards the new trend in banking is ______.
A.cautious B.regretful C.positive D.hostile(敌意的)
65、Cash is rarely used nowadays because _______.
A. it is no longer needed B. it is no longer useful
C. it is often replaced by credit cards D.credit cards took place.
C
Against the supposition(假设)that forest fires in Alaska, Canada and Siberia warm the climate, scientists have discovered that cooling may occur in areas where burnt trees allow more snow to mirror more sunlight into space.
This finding suggests that taking steps to prevent northern forest to limit the release of greenhouse gases may warm the climate in northern regions. Usually large fires destroyed forests in these areas over the past decade. Scientists predict that with climate warming, fires may occur more frequently over next several centuries as a result of a longer fire season. Sunlight taken in by the earth tends to cause warming, while heat mirrored back into space tends to cause cooling.
This is the first study to analyze all aspects of how northern fires influence climate. Earlier studies by other scientists have suggested that fire in northern regions speed up climate warming because greenhouse gases from burning trees and plants are released into the atmosphere and thus trap heat.
Scientists found that right after the fire, large amounts of greenhouse gases entered the atmosphere and caused warming. Ozone(臭氧)levels increased, and ash from the fire fell on far-off sea ice, darkening the surface and causing more radiation from the sun to be taken in. The following spring, however, the land within the area of the fire was brighter than before the fire, because fewer trees covered the ground. Snow on the ground mirrored more sunlight back into space, leading to cooling.
“We need to find out all possible ways to reduce the growth of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.” Scientists tracked the change in amount of radiation entering and leaving the climate system as a result of the fire, and found a measurement closely related to the global air temperature. Typically, fire in northern regions occurs in the same area every 80 to 150 years. Scientists, however, found that when fire occurs more frequently, more radiation is lost from the earth and cooling results. Specifically, they determined when fire returns 20 years earlier than predicated, 0.5 watts per square meter of area burned are soaked up by the earth from greenhouse gases, but 0.9 watts per square meter will be sent back into space. The net effect is cooling. Watts are used to measure the rate at which energy is gained or lost from the earth.
66、According to the new findings, taking steps to prevent northern forest fires may _______.
A. result in a warming climate
B. cause the forest fires to occur more frequently
C. lead to a longer fire season
D. protect the forests and the environment there
67、The following are all the immediate effects after a forest fire EXCEPT _________.
A. large amounts of greenhouse gases enter the atmosphere
B. the levels of ozone which is a type of oxygen increase
C. snow on the ground mirrors more sunlight back into space
D. ashes from the fire fall on the ice surface and take in more radiation from the sun
68、Earlier studies about northern forest fires _________.
A. analyze all aspects of how northern fires influence climate
B. indicate that forest fires will pollute the atmosphere
C. suggest that people should take measures to protect environment
D. suggest that the fires will speed up climate warming.
69、The underlined part “soaked up” in the last paragraph most probably means ________.
A. released B. absorbed C. created D. distributed
70、From the passage we can draw a conclusion that forest fires in Alaska, Canada and Siberia may __________.
A. warm the climate as the supposition goes
B. allow more snow to reflect more sunlight into space and thus cool the climate
C. destroy large areas of forests and pollute the far-off sea ice
D. help to gain more energy rather than release more energy

第一节 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,并根据要求完成文章后的题目。
[1] I really don’t need anything for Christmas. I had the best gift ever last night, watching my two sons reading their books before bedtime. They were each in different rooms, engrossed in their pages, with no TV, music, or anything else in the background. I will take this small gift any time, any day, any season.
[2] Like anyone else, I had lots of other interests, but once I discovered I was pretty much hooked on reading , I read everything----books, magazines, newspapers, the back of cereal boxes or orange juice cartons if there was nothing else on the table at the moment. I have my parents to thank in large part for the love of reading. They were always working on something.
[3] With few exceptions, today’s kids are up against far more distractions (令人分心的事) than most of us ever were, and it is so EASY for them to become disengaged in reading. There’s the PlayStation or the Xbox. There’s the iPod. There’s the internet. There’s texting. And there’s peer pressure. If the coolest kid in the class thinks reading a book is the most god-awful thing .......
[4] I’ve told my sons that with reading come information, knowledge, and understanding, _____ will help them at every stage in their lives, now and forever. However, we’ve gotta say it and model it. It’s not enough for the teachers to say it and require it, or for us to leave it to them. We have to, as well.
[5] Of course we have to use and acknowledge the power of new technologies in our lives. But we need to keep the reading going too. There’s a place and a need for everything. So it’s an amazing thing. It’s not Christmas yet and I already have my gift.( My husband’s comment when I told him this: “ Does this mean I can return all of yours?”)

Besides, we need a little more time to think for ourselves. As for those important points which also make us confused, would you please give us more practice in case we forget? Meanwhile, we need badly instructions on learning strategies.
By the way, we often feel frustrated, which has a bad effect on our study. We should appreciate it if you can give us some encouragement and be concerned more about our psychological problems before examinations now and then.

I still remember the days when I was a youthful student in an engineering school. I lived a casual life, without caring about the future. I smoked, drank with friends and made girl friends. Little did I realize that casualness would certainly lead to loss.
Two yeas had passed and I was staring down a report card that highlighted FAIL in more than half the subjects. I didn’t care, at least not till my dad found about it. You see, I studied in India and unlike the United States where the students are expected to finance their own education, my dad financed me.
Then came the day when my dad found out my habit of smoking. He lost his temper but he just told me, “Son, your allowance is cut in half from this moment on”. It hit me like a roundhouse kick(回旋踢)from Bruce Lee. I was jolted(震摇)out of my bones! I couldn’t comprehend how to pay off the debts that I had accumulated in college. I owed everybody money: the grocery store, the bars, the restaurants, my friends, etc. I was living a life filled with credit.
When I went back to college, I knew that if I don’t change the way I live my life I won’t be able to pay everybody off. So I decided to make some changes, drastic changes. I quit smoking, cut off from my friends who led me down the wrong road, starting hanging out in libraries and reading my engineering books.
One year later, I went from a miserable failure to a magna cum laude(优等成绩). Life was never the same again. This incident made me know that anything is possible if you take action and do something about it, however small or large. Even today it still motivates me when I feel that I’m about to lose or give up. It reminds me that I can do it!

Steve Jobs, Apple’s chief executive, made his first publics appearance since going on medical leave six weeks ago, taking the stage at a San Francisco media event to introduce the iPad 2, the second generation of the company’s tablet computer.
Thin but energetic, Mr. Jobs showed off a thinner iPad. “ We’ve been working on this product for a while and I just didn’t want to miss this day.” He said.
His absence has concerned investors, especially since the group has given no details of his condition. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2004 and had a liver transplant during almost six months of medical leave in 2009. People close to him said last month his health had been changing.
Apple’s stock(股票)rose more than 2 per cent in the minutes after Mr. Jobs began speaking, then gave up some of its gain as he detailed the iPad 2.
The iPad 2 will go on sale in black and white versions in the US on March 11 and in 26 other countries, including the UK and Germany, on March 25.
Most of the improvements in the latest version had been expected, including a camera in the front and back for video conferencing, taking photos and videos. The iPad 2 is one-third thinner than the original tablet and slightly lighter. In the US it will work with AT&T and Verizon, the top two mobile carriers(运营商).The pricing will be the same to the 2010 iPad at its introduction, ranging from $499 to $829 in six models. But Apple dropped prices on the older iPad on Wednesday by $100 across the board.
Apple has made the most of its year-long head start in tablets, selling 15,000,000 units of the older iPad last year and taking about 85 per cent of the market. It is predicted that the iPad 2 would claim 80 per cent of the US market this year, or 20,000,000 out of 24,000,000 total shipped(出货量).
Motorola, Blackberry maker Research in Motion, Samsung and others have brought out competing tablets, many based on Google’s Android software.
Mr. Jobs said the rest of the field was still catching up with the first iPad and their markets for applications designed for tablets had, at best, 100 small programs. This compares with 65,000 on Apple’s application store.
66、Why are the investors of Apple worried according to the text?

Elena Kagan has reached a lifelong goal: becoming a Justice on the United States Supreme Court. The US Senate confirmed Kagan on Thursday by a vote of 63-37. She replaces Justice John Paul Stevens, who retired in June.
Kagan will take a sacred oath(誓言)to uphold the Constitution of the United States on Saturday at a swearing-in ceremony. The new Justice will bring the number of women sitting on the nation’s highest court to three. Kagan joins Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor-all three New Yorkers.
Kagan is the fourth woman in history to sit on the Supreme Court. Justice Sandra Day O’Connor was the first female Justice. She was appointed by President Ronald Reagan and served from 1981to 2006.
Kagan, who is 50 years old, is the second Justice appointed by President Barack Obama. (He appointed Justice Sotomayor in 2009.) Obama told reporters on Thursday that Kagan will make an “outstanding Justice who understands that her rulings affect people.” He also noted that the addition of another woman to the Supreme Court marks a sign of progress for the country. Obama and Kagan will celebrate her confirmation with a ceremony at the White House today.
Kagan has spent most of her adult life working with the law. She served in President Clinton’s administration as a legal adviser, was the head of Harvard Law School, and until her confirmation Thursday, was the US Solicitor General-one of the most powerful lawyers in the federal government. Kagan was born in New York City. She grew up in an apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, the strong-willed, independent middle sister sandwiched between two brothers.
Kagan’s mother was a public school teacher who taught fifth and sixth grades. Her father was a lawyer.
The new Justice once wore a judge’s robe in a picture for her high-school yearbook. Now she’ll be wearing real ones as she and the other eight Justices decide some of the most important legal cases.

【1】The British summer is extremely beautiful. Trees, flowers, birds and butterflies make the whole country like a big garden. However, many British people have noticed that butterflies have been gradually disappearing from this picturesque scenery during the past several years. What has happened to them?
【2】Butterfly Conservation, a charity in the UK, is running a survey to help answer this question. The result is more serious than people expected. According to the survey, among 59 butterfly species found in Britain, more than three quarters of them are suffering a declining population, including the most popular ones. What’s more, half of all butterfly species are in the danger of dying out. Some common species such as the small Tortoiseshell butterfly and the Wall butterfly are dropping dramatically. The latter cannot even be seen in many parts of central and southern England. The Blue butterfly was commonly seen in the south. However, it has started colonizing(迁徙至)Edinburgh in the past few years.
【3】The numbers of butterflies have dropped to a record low in the past three years largely because the summer in the UK is getting cooler and their habitat is also worsening. Fortunately Britain is experiencing a long hot summer this year compared to the last few summers. Conservationists believe the warm weather will bring some benefit to the butterflies.
【4】Sir David Attenborough, president of Butterfly Conservation, said: “Large quantities of butterflies tell us that all is well with nature. When they decline it’s a warning that other wildlife will be soon _______ .”
【5】The survey is still going on. The public are also encouraged to keep track of the UK’s butterfly population. The organizers hope the survey will help raise public awareness of the value of butterflies in the UK. Butterflies give an indication of the well-being of nature and the environment.

As I spoke, I mentally kicked myself for my 40 and reached into my bag for some money. As I handed her five dollars, I heard low sounds from her stomach because of real 41 .
I reached back into my bag and brought out a 42 I had bought earlier. I handed it to her with a(n) 43 that I hoped would make up for my earlier tone of voice. Getting a 44 look at her now, I realized she was extremely tired, like she had had several months of 45 days!
As she took the food, a look of 46 washed over her. In return, she tried to give me a Milwaukee bus ticket! I don’t live in Milwaukee and the ticket will probably 47 be used, but I took it.
A few minutes later she came back over, apologized, and told me she was still 48 of five dollars. I took some singles out of my bag and slipped a twenty in there as well. 49 , the voice in my head told me I was being a fool.
Five minutes later she came back again and tried to 50 my twenty. When I said it was for her so she could get something else to 51 , and that I was completely serious and I wasn’t taking it 52 , she started crying and hugged me.
From now on, when I wonder if it is 53 trying to help someone, I will remember that woman. Maybe I am really making a 54 for someone. So, sure, sometimes my efforts might not be noticed, and sometimes they might come back to bite me, but they might actually 55 another human being!

Do you know anything about the history of weather? Don’t look at the sky. Don’t look for old weather reports. Looking at the tree rings is more important. Correct weather reports date back only one century, but some trees can provide an exact record of weather even further back.
It is natural that a tree would grow best in a climate with plenty of sunlight and rainfall. It is also expected that little sunlight or rainfall would reduce the growth of a tree. The change from a favorable to an unfavorable climate can be found out by the reading pattern of rings in a tree trunk. To find out the weather of ten years ago, you can count the rings of a tree trunk from the outside to the inside. If the tenth ring is far from the other rings, then it is certain that plenty of sunny and rainy weather occurred. If the rings are close together, then the climate was bad for the tree.
Studying trees is important not only for the history of weather, but also for the history of man. In an area of New Mexico you can find only sand — no trees or people. However, many centuries ago a large population lived there. They left suddenly. Why?
A scientist studied the pattern of the rings of dead trees that had grown there. He made up his mind that the people had to leave because they had cut down all the trees. Trees were necessary to make fires and buildings. So, after the people destroyed the trees, they had to move.
In this example studying tree rings uncovered an exciting fact about the history of man.
56. We can find out the weather of five years ago by counting the rings of a tree trunk ____.

58. By studying the rings of dead trees in an area of New Mexico, the scientist found _______.
A. what the people had to eat B. where the people had to go
C. why the people had to leave D. how the people left
59.The ancient people usually lived where there were plenty of trees mainly because ______.
A. trees were materials for fires and buildings B. trees could supply them with fruit and food
C. rees could supply them with shades D. trees provided an exact record of weather

A. that studying trees is important for the history of man
B. trees can’t live in the area without population
C. what the relation is between tree rings and the history of man

You wake up in the morning, the day is beautiful and the plans for the day are what you have been looking forward to for a long time. Then the telephone rings, you say hello, and the drama starts. The person on the other end has a depressing(令人沮丧的) tone in his voice as he starts to tell you how terrible his morning is and that there is nothing to look forward to.You are still in a wonderful mood? Impossible!
Communicating with negative people can wash out your happiness. It may not change what you think, but communicating long enough with them will make you feel depressed for a moment or a long time.
Life brings ups and downs, but some people are stuck in the wrong idea that life has no happiness to offer. They only feel glad when they make others feel bad.No wonder they can hardly win others’ pity or respect.
When you communicate with positive people, your spirit stays happy and therefore more positive things are attracted. When the dagger(匕首)of a negative person is put in you.you feel the heavy feeling that all in all, brings you down.
Sometimes we have no choice but to communicate with negative people. This could be a co-worker,or relative. In this case, say what needs to be said as little as possible. Sometimes it feels good to let out-your anger back to the negative person, but all this does is to lower you to that same negative level and they won’t feel ashamed of themselves about that.
Negativity often affects happiness without even being realized. The negative words of another at the start of the day can cling to(附着)you throughout the rest of your day, which makes you feel bad and steals your happiness.Life is too short to feel negative.Stay positive and avoid negativity as much as possible.
59. According to the passage, to reduce negative people’s influence on us, we are advised
A. to show our dissatisfaction to negative people B. to change negative people’s attitude to life

D. to make negative people feel ashamed of themselves

62.How can negative people have effect on us?
A. By telling US the nature of life. B. By comparing their attitude to life with ours
C.. By influencing our emotion. D. By changing our way of thinking.
63. Some negative people base their happiness on _______________________ .
A. building up a positive attitude B. other people’s pity for them

Although there is no formal process of selection, in larger groups, leaders are usually chosen formally through election or recruitment(招募).
Although leaders are often thought to be people with unusual personal ability, decades(十年) of research have failed to produce evidence that there are any “natural leaders”. It seems that there is no set of personal qualities that all leaders have in common; or rather, any person may be recognized as a leader if the person has qualities that meet the needs of that particular group.
Research suggests that there are typically two different leadership roles that are held by different individuals. Instrumental leadership is leadership that emphasizes the completion of tasks by a social group. Group members look to instrumental leaders to “get things done”. Expressive leadership, on the other hand, is leadership that emphasizes the collective well-beings(福利) of a social group’s members. Expressive leaders are less concerned with the overall goals of the group than with providing emotional support to group members and attempting to minimize tension and conflict among them.
Instrumental leaders are likely to have a rather secondary relationship to other group members. They give others and may discipline group members who inhibit (阻碍) attainment of the group’s goals. Expressive leaders develop a more personal or primary relationship to others in the group. They offer sympathy when someone experiences difficulties and try to solve problems that threaten to divide the group. As the difference between these two roles suggests, expressive leaders generally receive more personal affection from group members; instrumental leaders, if they are successful in promoting group goals, may enjoy a more distant respect.

B. Most people desire to be leaders but can produce little evidence of their qualifications.C. A person can best learn how to be an effective leader by studying research on leadership.D. Few people succeed in sharing a leadership role with another person.
74. In mentioning “natural leaders” in Line 4, the author is making the point that?________.

Many students want to find friends on the Internet as a way of practising their language skills and learning more about new cultures. Traditional pen pals were the primary source for such contacts, and students could write each other letters. With the Internet, fingding friends has become much easier, and such relationships are called key pals.
However, care and consideration should be given when finding friends on the Internet:
◎Search the Internet for reputable(有信誉的) services. Look for reviews of such sites to learn more about other students’ experiences. Don’t join a service until you have done your research
◎Check to see if you can use a nickname, instead of __________, to protect your identity.
◎Never give personal information to anyone, including your home address, phone number, and birthday.
◎Stop contact with others if you feel uncomfortable with the topics of conversation. Again, if you protect your identity, this will be easier to do. Tell your teachers, parents, or even local law enforement if problem arise.
◎Try to use the language you are studying in the classroom in your communication with others.
◎Ask appropriate questions that will also help you learn about other cultures. Remember that someone’s personal experience might help you to understand a whole culture. You have to talk to many different people, and it will get you started.

Technology is making life easier for some dairy farmers. They use robotic systems to
milk their cows.Cows are trained to follow a series of paths that lead to milking stations.Only one cow at a time can enter a station.
Once inside, the cow is rewarded with food.As the cow eats,a robotic arm cleans and connects the animal to the milking machine.A few minutes later, milking is complete. The gate is opened, the cow is released and the next cow enters.
The robotic systems are designed to operate 24 hours a day.The cows get to decide when they want to be milked.Cows are milked an average of about three times a day. Some are milked four to six times a day.
The cows wear collars around their necks that identify them to the system.A computer keeps records on their eating and milking.A cow is released from the station if the computer decides it should not be milked.
The automated system also measures the temperature and color of freshly produced
milk.Milk is thrown away if it does not pass the tests.
Professor Plaut believes the systems will appeal especially to the next generation of
farmers. She means young people who are more interested in technology and less interested in working all the time on the farm.Still, she says the price of robotic milking systems will continue to limit their use.
Doug and Tina Suhr have more than 100 cows on their family farm.Last year it became the fourth farm in southeast Minnesota to get a robotic milking system.A recent story in a local agricultural newspaper said the first robot cost 175 000 dollars. The second cost 150 000.
Doug told AgriNews that wages that would have been paid for one employee in five
years will pay for one robot. He says the increase in milk production reaches a high of more than six kilograms per cow per day.
56.From the first paragraph,we can infer________.
A.the robotic system is designed to reduce labor
B.cows can be raised by robots in the future
C.robots direct cows into milking stations
D.cows are kept clean by robots on some farms
57.Besides milking cows, the robotic system also can______.
A.adjust the temperature of milking stations
B.judge the quality of fresh milk
C.improve the appetite of cows
D.keep fresh milk for two weeks
58.Why is the robotic system not popular now?
A.Because young people have no interest in it.
B.Because it is difficult to learn how to use it.
C.Because people can’t afford to buy it.
D.Because it usually causes the waste of milk.
59.According to Doug, what is the wage of an employee?
A.150 000~170 000. B.750 000.
C.150 000~30 000. D.30 000—32 000
60.The best title for the passage may be_________.
A.Letting robot milk your cow B.Milking cows by hand

The world will run out of Internet addresses within weeks, according to one of the founding fathers of the Web.
Vint Cerf, who helped create the Web by connecting computers using Internet Protocol
(IP)addresses, said it was his fault that the 4.3 billion addresses created were running out.
“I thought it was an experiment and I thought that 4.3 billion addresses would be
enough to do the experiment,”Cerf, who is Google’s vice president and Chief Internet
Evangelist, said, “ Who the hell knew how much address space we needed?.”
In 1977,Cerf created the Web protocol (协议) IPv4,which connects computers globally, as part of the experiment while working with the U.S.Department of Defense. He
said he never expected his experiment “ wouldn’t end”.“It doesn’t mean the network stops,it just means you can’t build it very well.”Cerf said.
IP addresses are the unique sequence of numbers assigned to each computer, websites
or other Internet--connected devices. They are not the same as website domain names. The
overwhelming number of devices now accessing the Internet means the addresses are running out fast.To resolve the crisis,an updated protocol for the Internet,IPv6,currently being planned by the industry, will create trillions of addresses.
As Google’s vice president Cerf said he thought the new chief executive of Google,
Larry Page, was ready to lead the company into the future. In a surprise move,Google
announced that co-founder Larry Page would replace Eric Schmidt as chief executive.
Eric Schmidt,55,a former chief executive of Novell, will remain with Google as executive chairman, focusing on deals, partnerships, customers and government outreach. He will also act as an adviser to Larry Page,37,who served as CEO previously, from 1998 to 2001.
Cerf said Eric Schmidt had been chief executive for 10 years — a nice round number--- and Larry Page was ready to lead the company into the future.“Larry Page and Sergey Brin are 10 years older than they were when they thoughtfully hired Eric Schmidt to be the CEO, so everybody is growing up,” Cerf said.
61.According to the text,Cerf_______.
A.should be responsible for the lack of Internet addresses
B.didn’t expect the great demand for Internet addresses
C.was regretful for creating so many Internet addresses
D.completely failed in his experiment in 1977
62.It can be inferred that Cerf created IPv4 originally for_________.
A.industry B.agriculture C.military D. business
63.According to the text,IPv6 is the name of________.
A.computers B.many website domain names
C.a group of websites D.a series of numbers
64.Why was Larry Page appointed as chief executive of Google?
A.To make Google take the lead.
B.To manage the business of deals and customers.
C.To make Google become a technology giant.
D.To fight against other Internet search engines.
65.What might be the most suitable title for the passage?
A.Is Google becoming a technology giant?
B.Are we running out of Internet addresses?
C.Are Internet search engines useful for us?
D.Are Internet addresses endless for US to use?

Have you ever been to a NASCAR race or watched one on TV? The cars fly around the
tracks at a speed of sometimes over 200 mph. These extremely excited groups of steel drive
so fast. They can barely see the road in front of them, never minding what is around them.
The crowd goes by in a blur, and trees are unrecognizable. The only thing they can see is
the other cars going just as fast as they can. They must slow down so that they can catch
things around them in order to see what they are missing.
Sometimes,it is the same with life.People tend to go at high speed and never realize
their life passing by right before their eyes. They are missing out on beautiful things that are
right in front of them and all around them because they move so quickly. From the moment
they wake up,they take a shower quickly, get ready at a million miles an hour, and then
rush out and speed to work. They come home after work and eat a quick dinner, maybe play
with kids for a few moments and then go to bed,or maybe take a couple minutes to read papers or watch news, but for the most part, everything is whisked off at the speed of light.
Life is meant to be enjoyed. It is meant to be peaceful and full of happiness. We should take some time out of every day and be grateful for everything and everyone in our life.In some instances,we are moving too fast to even give“please”or“thank you”.We should stop once in a while and just look around with admiration, and our life is beautiful.
I read a quote some time ago and it said something like this“ Even seeds take the time
to push through what seems to be tons of dirt, only to grow into a beautiful flower.”
You see,in order to become something beautiful in every way,it takes time, and it
needs nurturing and being in the fight environment. We have to be diligent on our journey
and realize that quickness is not always better.
Cherish every day as if it were your last.Let’s be honest here...we are on the way
to dying----- a morbid fact, but it is really a fact.Do you want to enjoy it while you are
standing and breathing ? I know I do.
66.The main idea of the passage is________.
A.never to go fast in your life B.to enjoy a fast life completely
C.that time flies as we age D.to love your life all the way
67.The underlined word “morbid”in the text may get close to________.
A.pleasant B.sad C.basic D.relevant
68.The writer may support the idea that____________.
A.1ife is too short for everyone to enjoy B.beautiful things come from a fast life
C.we need to slow down to enjoy our life D.it is better for us to move fast in life
69.The writer used a quote in the text to prove___________.
A.the terrible power of seeds B.the weight of dirt
C.the root of a beautiful flower D.the need of slowing down your life
70.The purpose of the writer writing this passage is to___________.
A.advise us to make our life memorable B.expect us to value every minute
C.warn us not to be afraid of death D.persuade us to live a comfortable life
D
A political scientist from Indiana university whose work exploring how people come together to preserve their collective resources may provide important clues in the fight against climate change has become the first woman to win the Nobel Prize for economics.
Elinor Ostrom,76,shares the award with fellow American academic Oliver E.Williamson,77.The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said the pair had been chosen to win the 40th prize in economic sciences because they both challenged established(确定的) thinking on economic governance — a statement given that the global financial crisis has left perceived economic wisdom looking more than a little tarnished.
For Ostrom, the award came ,as she showed,as a “big surprise”.To rise to the pinnacle(顶峰)of her area of learning has been a big journey,as she has had to struggle against her own weaknesses and the impediments(妨碍)of the system.
At school in Los Angeles she suffered from stuttering(口吃).She also faced the obstacles common to most women of her generation entering the sciences ---- she was discouraged from taking a PhD when she applied for graduate schoo1.
Her field of study has been striking for how cross-disciplinary it is.Early on she gained a reputation for bringing economics, political science and sociology together.
What interests her is how common property can be managed successfully through groups in society. One of the first subjects that interested her was management of water resources.
The findings of her research have been striking, because they have challenged the traditional idea that common property is poorly managed unless it is either regulated by government or privatized. She has shown how disparate individuals can work together and form collectives that protect the resource at hand.
”A lot of people are waiting for more international co-operation to solve global warming,”Ostrom said.“It is important that there is an international agreement, but we can take steps at family level, community level, civic and national level…There are many steps that can be taken, which will not solve it completely but cumulatively will make a big difference.”
71.Hearing the news of award,Ostrom was_______.
A.astonished B.calm C.crazy D.excited
72.Why Was Ostrom not advised to take a PhD?
A.Because she was a stutter who didn’t speak fluently.
B.Because she was a woman who was prejudiced then.
C.Because she was as common as other women in science.
D.Because she didn’t receive a degree of master yet.
73.Which of the following statement may Ostrom agree to?
A.Only government can make full use of common property.
B.Private enterprise can control individual behavior.
C.Different people should work together to protect the resources.
D.Individuals play a minor role in fighting climate change.
74.Ostrom was awarded the Nobel Prize for economics because _______.
A.she brought economics and political science into sociology
B.she predicted the breakout of the global financial crisis
C.she worked on the relationship between individuals and government
D.she put forward a new theory to help fight against climate change
75. The passage is mainly about________.
A.Elinor Ostrom’s work may help fight poverty
B.the Nobel Prize for economics was first won by a woman
C.the first woman won the Nobel Prize in America
D.the Nobel Prize for economics is shared this year

[1]Afghanistan(阿富汗)is failing in two major areas in particular:Security and good government.Violence has gone up this year with increasingly attacks, and has spread to the once-peaceful north of the country. And widespread corruption(腐败)is making attempts to create a viable Afghan government and institutions to take over when the US and NATO leave in 2014.
[2]Poll after poll shows that the biggest issue for Afghans is the lack of security. ____in southern Kandahar, the former Taliban headquarters where the US generals claim to have made progress, violence is a part of life.
[3]Ehsanullah Khan, who has run an education center for girls and boys in southern Kandahar for the last six years, says his life is constantly in danger. It’s not just the Taliban, but ultraconservative(极端保守主义的)government officials, tribal elders, even his neighbors who object to girls going to school.Khan says he will be killed if he leaves Kandahar, and is unsafe even within the city.

Everyone gathered around and Paddy read out loud, slowly, his tone growing sadder and sadder. The little?headline said: BOXER?RECEIVES LIFF SENTENCE.
Frank Cleary, aged 26, professional boxer, was today found guilty of the murder of Albert?Cumming, aged 32, laborer, last July. The jury (陪审团) reached its decision after only ten minutes, recommending the most severe punishment to the court. It was, said the judge, a simple case. Cumming and Cleary had quarreled violently at the Harbour Hotel on July 23rd and police saw Cleary kicking at the head of the unconscious Cumming.?When arrested, Cleary was drunk but clear-thinking.
Cleary was sentenced to life imprisonment with hard labour. Asked if he had anything to say, Cleary answered, “Just don't tell my mother.”

Paddy wiped the tears from his face and said.? “Fee , pack your things. We'll go to see him.”
She half-rose before sinking back, her eyes in her small white face stared as if dead. “I can't go,”?she said without a hint of pain, yet making everyone feel that the pain was there.?“It would kill him to see me. I know him so well—his pride, his ambition. Let him bear the shame alone, it's what he wants.?We've got to help him keep his secret.?What good will it do him to see us?”
Paddy was still weeping, not for Frank, but for the life which had gone from Fee's face, for the dying in her eyes. Frank had always brought bitterness and misfortune, always stood between Fee and himself.?He was the cause of her withdrawal from his heart and the hearts of his children.?Every time it looked as if there might be happiness for Fee, Frank took it away.?But Paddy's love for her was as deep and impossible to wipe out as hers was for Frank.
So he said.?“Well, Fee, we won't go. But we must make sure he is taken care of.?How about if I write to Father Jones and ask him to look out for Frank?”
The eyes didn't liven, but a faint pink stole into her cheeks. “Yes, Paddy, do that.?Only make sure he knows not to tell Frank we found out. Perhaps it would ease Frank to think for certain that we don't know.”

Competition between international universities is heating up, as China grows as one of the largest exporters of students aiming to study abroad. “Lots of universities are becoming more and more aggressive to attract Chinese students. Every day I receive contacts from universities in the US expressing the desire to come to China to recruit students,” said Frank Joseph, a commercial officer from embassy of the United States.
One key reason why more Chinese students are able to study abroad is the economy: With China’s boom within the past decade, more families have the financial wherewithal(资金) to send their children to international universities. There will be a total of 200,000 family-funded Chinese students studying overseas in 2009, up 20 percent from last year, said Wu Zaofeng, deputy secretary general of China Education Association for International Exchange.
International institutions, Joseph said, are also facing increasingly tough financial situation with a shortage of domestic students and a drop in government subsidies(补贴). Students, especially in the US are paying high tuition fees and living expenses. Chinese students with money to spend, according to experts, can fill up the gap. Students on average spend 150,000 yuan to 200,000 yuan every year studying in US, according to statistics from the US Institute of International Education. During 2007-2008, there were approximately 81,000 Chinese students studying in the US, up 19.8 percent from 2006.
Representatives from approximately 60 universities from the United States are planning to arrive in Beijing this weekend to attract more Chinese students at this year’s fair. Besides the US, many other countries are also vying(竞争) to enroll Chinese students.
Post-study work visa put out by British government allows all international students completing a UK degree qualification to apply for a visa to stay on and look for work in UK for up to 2 years. Being the third most popular destination for international students next to the US and the UK, France has set up two types of scholarships and has handed out an increase of 26 percent in scholarship funds to Chinese students in recent years.

D. that the students in foreign countries do not want to go to universities

C. Because they want to win the scholarship of foreign universities

Our character, basically, is a composite of our habits. “Sow a thought, reap(收获) an action; sow an action, reap a habit; sow a habit, reap a character; sow a character, reap a destiny(命运),” the proverb says.
Habits are powerful factors in our lives. Because they are consistent, often unconscious patterns, they constantly, daily, express our character and produce our effectiveness or ineffectiveness.
As Horace Mann, the great educator, once said, “Habits are like a cable. We weave a wire of it every day and soon it cannot be broken.” I personally do not agree with the last part of his expression. I know habits can be learned and unlearned. But I also know it isn’t a quick fix. It contains a process and a matchless will.
Those of us who watched the lunar voyage of Apollo 11 were transfixed(呆住) as we saw the first men walk on the moon and return to earth. But to get there, those astronauts actually had to break out of the huge gravity pull of the earth. More energy was spent in the first few minutes of lift-off, in the first few miles of travel, than was used over the next several days to travel half a million miles.
Habits, too, have huge gravity pull-more than most people realize or would admit. Breaking deeply imbedded (嵌入) habitual tendencies such as delay, impatience, criticalness, or selfishness that violate basic principles of human effectiveness includes more than a little willpower and a few minor changes in our lives. “Lift off” takes a very hard effort, but once we break out of the gravity pull, our freedom takes on a whole new dimension.
Like any natural force, gravity pull can work with us or against us. The gravity pull of some of our habits may generally be keeping us from going where we want to go. But it is also gravity pull that keeps our world together, that keeps the planets in their orbits and our universe in order. It is a powerful force, and if we use it effectively, we can use the gravity pull of habit to create the cohesiveness(凝聚力) and order necessary to establish effectiveness in our lives.
66. Which of the following is TRUE according to the proverb?
A. Action is the proper fruit of knowledge. B. A large part of virtue consists in good habits.
C. Behavior depends on attitude. D. A good beginning makes a good ending.
67. The author doesn’t agree all Horace Mann said because ________.
A. he was not quite sure about what the educator expressed
B. he misunderstood the educator’s statements
C. he thought the educator concluded the result absolutely
D. he had an opposite understanding about habits
68. What is the purpose of the author to give the example of lunar voyage of Apollo 11?
A. To show people that everything is possible if taking efforts.
B. To tell the heart-shaking experience of the voyage.
C. To advise people to break out of the gravity pull in life.
D. To state that good habits’ forming needs hard work.
69. Lifting off the gravity pull of bad habits may _______.
A. cause some ill effects on your life B. cost you a lot of energy and efforts
C. need everyone’s working together D. require others watching over
70. What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. The gravity pull of habit has two sides.
B. The gravity pull keeps everything in the world in order.
C. The gravity pull of habit affects our lives effectively.
D. The gravity pull of habit keeps us from what we will do.
D
I live in the land of Disney, Hollywood and year-round sun. You may think people in such a splendid, fun-filled place are happier than others. If so, you have some mistaken ideas about the nature of happiness.
Many intelligent people still equate happiness with fun. The truth is that fun and happiness have little or nothing in common. Fun is what we experience during an act. Happiness is what we experience after an act. It is a deeper, more lasting emotion.
Going to an amusement park or ball game, watching a movie or television, are fun activities that help us relax, temporarily forget our problems and maybe even laugh. But they do not bring happiness, because their positive effects end when the fun ends.
I have often thought that if Hollywood stars have a role to play, it is to teach us that happiness has nothing to do with fun. These rich, beautiful individuals have constant access to glamorous parties, fancy cars, expensive homes, everything that spells “happiness”. But in memoir(回忆录)after memoir, they reveal the unhappiness hidden beneath all their fun: depression, alcoholism, drug addiction, broken marriages, troubled children and profound loneliness.
Ask a bachelor why he resists marriage, if he’s honest, and he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment, for commitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure and excitement. Marriage has such moments, but they are not its most distinguishing features.
Similarly, couples that choose not to have children are deciding in favor of painless fun over painful happiness. They can dine out whenever they want and sleep as late as they can. Couples with infant children are lucky to get a whole night’s sleep or a three-day vacation. I don’t know any parent who would choose the word fun to describe raising children.
Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the most liberating(解放性的)realizations. It liberates time: now we can devote more hours to activities that can genuinely increase our happiness. It liberates money: buying that new car or those fancy clothes that will do nothing to increase our happiness now seems pointless. And it liberates us from envy: we now understand that all those rich and glamorous people we were so sure are happy because they are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all.
71. We can learn from the passage that____________.
A. fun creates long-lasting satisfaction
B. fun provides enjoyment while pain leads to happiness
C. happiness is lasting whereas fun is short-lived
D. fun that is long-standing may lead to happiness
72. To the author, the role Hollywood stars will play is to _________.
A. write memoir after memoir about their happiness
B. tell the public that happiness has nothing to do with fun
C. teach people how to enjoy their lives
D. bring happiness to the public instead of going to parties
73. In the author’s opinion, marriage____________.
A. affords greater fun B. leads to raising children
C. indicates duty and devotion D. usually ends up in pain
74. Which of the following is the best example of “painful happiness”?
A. Winning lottery by accident. B. A bachelor resisting marriage.
C. Raising children. D. Buying some fancy clothes.
75. If one gets the meaning of the true sense of happiness, he will____________.
A. stop playing games and joking with others B. keep himself with his family
C. give a free hand to money D. use his time to increase happiness
In 2009, the number of hungry people in the world reached one billion for the first time. It is difficult not to be shocked by the fact that more than one in seven people on the planet do not have enough to eat. By the end of this year, more than 35 million people will have died as a result of . Hunger kills more people per year than AIDS and malaria(疟疾 ) combined.
The UN calculates that almost two-thirds of the world's hungry people are in Asia. More than a quarter are in sub-Saharan Africa. Almost all of the rest are in Latin America, North Africa and the Caribbean. In the richest regions of the world there are only a small number of people who don't have enough to eat. There are many reasons for world hunger. They include wars, droughts, floods and the overuse of farming land. All of them affect food production. But the most important reason is, quite simple, poverty—which has increased recently due to the economic effects of the financial crisis of 2008.
Although many people point out that there would be less hunger if the global population were smaller, few people would argue that there is not enough food to go around. The basic problem seems to be not a lack of food, but its distribution. In the last 50 years, global food production has risen even more quickly than the global population and there are of course many areas of the world where people generally have more than enough food. Overweight is a far bigger problem than hunger there.

写作
Dear editor,
Nowadays more and more arguments arise with the increasing use of cameras in supermarkets to prevent theft. Those who support using cameras in supermarkets insist that it is the best way to protect the owners’ interest. The reasons are as follows. For one thing, cameras are more effective than security guards. For another, they are much more objective. Thus, cameras are of great help.
On the other hand, some people voice doubts about the use of cameras. They think the owners who use cameras don’t trust their customers and take no notice of their customers human rights. In other words, using cameras may hurt customers to some degree.
As far as I’m concerned, the best solution is for both sides to respect each other’s needs. If it’s necessary for the shopowners to use cameras, they should use them in such a way that the customers don’t feel that they are wacthed over.

第三部分 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

For centuries, the body's blood has been linked closely with the emotions.People who show no human emotions or feelings, are said to be cold-blooded killer. For example, the police are searching for a cold-blooded killer. He seems to kill for no reason, and no emotion, as if taking someone's life as nothing.
Cold can affect other parts of the body. The expression "get cold feet" has nothing to do with cold or your feet. The expression means being afraid to do something you have decided to do.For example, you agree to be president of an organization. But then you learn that all the other officers have resigned, and all the work of the organizations will be your responsibility. You are likely to get cold feet about being president when you understand the situation.
The expression "give someone the cold shoulder" probably comes from the physical act of turning your back toward someone, instead of speaking to him face to face. You may give a cold shoulder to a friend who has not kept a promise he made to you.Or, to someone who has lied about you to others.
A cold fish is not a fish.It is a person. But it is a person who is unfriendly, unemotional and shows no love or warmth.A cold fish does not offer much of himself to anyone.Someone who is a cold fish could be cold-hearted.Now a cold-hearted person is someone who has no sympathy.Several popular songs in recent years were about cold-hearted men or cold-hearted women who, without feelings, broke the hearts of their lovers.
"Out in the cold" means not getting something that everybody else got.A person might say that everybody but him got a pay raise——he was left out in the cold. And it is not a pleasant place to be.
56.There are _____ expressions related to cold that are mentioned in the passage.
A.3 B.4 C.6 D.7
【答案】C
【解析】细节理解题。全文共列举了cold-blooded killer, get cold feet ,give someone the cold shoulder ,a cold fish,cold-hearted和out in the cold这六个和cold有关的短语。
57.When you refuse to speak to a man and treat him in a distant way, you may express by "_____".
A.I give him the cold shoulder B.I think he is a cold-blooded man
C.I think he is a cold fish D.I'm likely to get cold feet
【答案】A
【解析】推理判断题。根据倒数第三段的对get cold feet的描写可知答案,其中instead of speaking to him face to face与refuse to speak相吻合。
58.If Sue shows absolutely no reaction to those awful pictures of starving children in Africa, you will say ______.
A.she is a cold-blooded killer B.she gets cold feet
C.she is a cold fish D.she is out in the cold
【答案】C
【解析】推理判断题。题干部分说面对非洲忍受饥饿的儿童无动于衷,完全没有反应,这种人与倒数第二段的But it is a person who is unfriendly, unemotional and shows no love or warmth.这句相符,所以选择C。
59.We can use the expression "_____" to describe a man who abandons or hurts his lover without mercy.
A.cold-blooded B.cold shoulder C.cold feet D.cold-hearted
【答案】D
【解析】推理判断题。根据倒数第二段的最后一句Several popular songs in recent years were about cold-hearted men or cold-hearted women who, without feelings, broke the hearts of their lovers.可知答案。

From a very early age, some children exhibit better self-control than others. Now, a new study that began with about 1,000 children in New Zealand has tracked how a child's low self-control can predict poor health, money troubles and even a criminal record in their adult years.
Researchers have been studying this group of children for decades now. They observed the level of self-control the youngsters displayed.Parents, teachers, even the kids themselves, scored the youngsters on measures like "acting before thinking" and "Persistence in reaching goals."
The study led by Moffitt of Duke University and colleagues followed 1, 000 children from birth to age 32 in Dunedin, New Zealand.
"The children who had the lowest self-control when they were age three to ten, later on had the most health problems in their 30s," Moffitt said, "and they had the worst financial situation. They were more likely to have a criminal record and to be raising a child as a single parent on a very low income." Moffitt explained that self-control problems were widely observed, and weren't just a feature of a small group of misbehaving kids.
Moffitt said it's still unclear why some children have better self-control than others, though she said other researchers have found that it's mostly a learned- behavior, with relatively little genetic influence. But good self-control can be set to run in families because children with good self-control are more likely to grow up to be healthy and prosperous parents. But the good news, Moffitt said, is that self-control can be taught by parents, and through school curricula that have been shown to be effective.

Most American students go to traditional public schools. There are about 88, 000 public schools, all over the US.Some students attend about 3000 independent public schools called charter schools.
Charter schools are self-governing.Private companies operate some charter schools. They are similar in some ways to traditional public schools. They receive tax money just as other public schools do.Charter schools must prove to local or state governments that their students are learning. These governments provide the schools with the agreement called a charter that permits them to operate.
Charter schools are different because they do not have to obey most laws governing traditional public schools.Local, state, or federal governments cannot tell them what to teach. Each school can choose its own goals and decide the ways it wants to reach them.Class size is usually smaller than in traditional public schools.
The Bush Administration strongly supports charter schools as a way to re-organize public schools that are failing to educate students. But some education agencies and unions oppose charter schools. One teachers' union has just made public the results of the first national study comparing the progress of students in traditional schools and charter schools.
The American Federation of Teachers criticized the government's delay in releasing the results of the study, which is called the National Assessment of Educational Progress.Union education experts say the study shows that charter school students performed worse on math and reading tests than students in regular public schools.
Some experts say the study is not a fair look at charter schools because students in those schools have more problems than students in traditional schools.Other education experts say the study results should make charter school officials demand improved student progress.

''Our aim is to take our art to the world and make people understand what it is to move," said David Belle, the founder of parkour (跑酷).
Do you love running? It is a good exercise, yet many people find it boring. But what if making your morning jog a creative one? Like jumping from Walls and over gaps, and ground rolls? Just like the James Bond in the movie Casino Royaler Bond jumps down from a roof to a windowsill and then runs several blocks over obstacles on the way.It is just because of Bond's wonderful performances that the sport has become popular worldwide.
Yes, that's parkour, an extreme street sport aimed at moving from one point to another as quickly as possible, getting over all the obstacles in the path using only the abilities of the human body.Parkour is considered an extreme sport. As its participants dash around a city, they may jump over fences, run up walls and even move from rooftop to rooftop.
Parkour can be just as exciting and charming as it sounds, but its participants see parkour much more than that.
Overcoming all the obstacles on the course and in life is part of the philosophy (理念) behind parkour. This is the same as life. You must determine your destination, go straight, jump over all the barriers as if in parkour and never fall back from them in your life, to reach the destination successfully.A parkour lover said, "I love parkour because its philosophy has become my life, my way to do everything."

Doctors say anger can be extremely damaging, unless you learn how to deal with it.They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.
Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time, some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way.Others burst with anger, and scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it.This is called ______.
For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person's health than expressing it.They said that when a person is angry, the brain release the same hormones. They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etc.in general the person feels excited and ready to act.
Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep their anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.
Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger. They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, "Do not express your anger while angry.Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably."

What can help you make a fortune in the future? Graduating from a top university might not be enough. A new study from the University of Essex in Britain has shown that the more friends you have in school, the more money you’ll earn later.
The idea that popularity could have a serious impact on one’s earning potential shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. The researchers noted that if you want to get ahead in life, social skills and networking are easily as powerful as talent and hard work.
“If a person has lots of friends, it means that he or she has the ability to get along with others in all kinds of different situations,” said Xu Yanchun, 17, from Nantou High School in Shenzhen, who totally agreed with the recent finding. “Also, friends always help each other. They not only create wider social circles for you but lift your mood when you occasionally feel depressed,” said Xu. She believed that all this helps you “earn a higher salary”.
Maybe that’s why some people think the younger generations are in the age of Friendalholism(交友狂症). A woman even complained that the networking website Facebook’s 5,000-friend limit was too low for her large reserve of social contacts.
But what does a friend mean? Should friends be regarded as a form of currency?
“Call me uncool, but I think of a friend as an actual person with whom I have an actual history and whom I enjoy actually seeing. It seems, however, that this is no longer the definition of ‘friend’,” said Meghan Daum, who works with the Los Angeles Times in the US.
36.The new study from the University of Essex in Britain shows that _______.
if you have more friends you will not live happily
the more friends you have in school, the more money you’ll earn in your late life
the less friends you have, the poor lives you will live
friends can make more money for you
37. According to Xu Yanchun, when you have lots of friends, it means________.
you have the ability to earn more money
you will not feel lonely
you are quite content with your life
you have the ability to get along with others in various situations
38.What’s the main idea of the passage?
The passage mainly tells us something about the friendship.
Friendship plays a more important part in our daily life than anything else.
Friends are currency.
Friends give you success.
39.We can learn from the passage that _______.
if you have more friends, you can make a fortune in the future
graduating from college means that you can make a fortune in the future
friends mean a form of currency
friends can make you wider social circle and make you feel better when you feel depressed
B
Wind , water, fire and ice-these powerful natural forces have shaped the land of America in the past. They are still changing it today.
The Colorado River slowly cut down through stone to make the Grand Canyon(大峡谷).
Long ago, ice sheets cut Yosemite Valley and the Great Lakes, and glaciers(冰川) are still on the move in Alaska.
Wind and rain storm hit the land from time to time. Fires sometimes burn down forests and destroy the homes of wild animals. This happened in Yellowstone Park in 1988.
Dead volcanic mountains such as Haleakala on Maui and Carter Lakein Oregon are beautiful to look at. But there are several active volcanoes in the US, especially along the Pacific Coast. There are also many earthquakes in this area. Scientists can do nothing to control earthquakes or volcanoes. This was shown clearly on May 18, 1980. At 8:32 that morning, Mount St Helens in Washington state broke out. The top of the mountain was blown off.
Over 60 people –campers, scientists, journalists, forest workers—were killed. Hundreds of square miles of forests were knocked down. In towns over 100 miles away, day suddenly became night. An ash cloud hid the sun for many hours. Towns and fields in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho were covered with dirty gray ash.
Scientists knew that Mt St Helens might erupt(爆发) soon. But no one could say when. And no one expected the terrible strength of the eruption. Many people were surprised and unready. Harry R. Truman, 84, owned a small hotel in Mt St Helens. Scientists had asked people to move away because the volcano was becoming dangerous.
But Harry Truman would not leave his home. Now it is covered with many feet of dirty ash. A small cross stands above the place where Harry probably died. Perhaps it is better that he did not see the destruction of Mt St Helens, the once beautiful lake, and the forests.
But slowly, life is returning to the dead area around the mountain. Grass and small plants are beginning to grow again. Deer and birds have been seen. The land will never be the same as it once was. Perhaps Mt St Helens will erupt again. But this is all part of nature’s pattern of change, and man has little power to control it.
40. Choose the best title for this passage.
Wind, water, fire and ice
Volcano’s beauty and danger
The power of nature
Natural force shape beautiful land of America
41. After the eruption of volcano, what makes the sky turn dark?
The smoke B. The clouds. C. The fog. D. The ash.
42. The underlined word “it” means______.
The body of old Harry
The location of Harry’s home
The opening on top of Mt St Helens
The place where Harry probably died
43. We can infer from this article that ______.
Washington and Oregon are neighboring states
Colorado River runs through Yosemite Valley
The eruption of Mt St Helens also caused trouble with the Yellowstone Park
Scientists never knew Mt St Helens was active
C
Job sharing refers to the situation in which two people divide the responsibility of one full-time job. The people willingly act as part-time workers, enough hours between them to fulfill the duties of a full-time worker. If they each work half the job, for example, they each receive 50 percent of the job’s wages, its holidays and its other benefits.
Job sharing differs from conventional(常规的) part-time work in that it occurs mainly in the more highly skilled and professional areas, which require higher levels of responsibility and employee commitment.
Job sharing should not be confused with the term work sharing, which refers to increasing the number of jobs by reducing the number of hours of each existing job, thus offering more positions to the growing number of unemployed people. Job sharing by contrast, is not designed to address the growing number of unemployed people. Job sharing, by contrast, is not designed to address unemployment problems; its focus, rather is to provide well-paid work for skilled workers and professionals who want more free time for other activities.
As would be expected, most job sharers are women. A survey carried out in 1988 by Britain’s Equal Opportunities Commission showed that 78 per cent of sharers were female, the majority of whom were between 20 and 40 years of age. Subsequent studies have come up with similar results. Many of these women were re-entering the job market after having had children, but they chose not to seek part-time work because it would have meant lower status. Job sharing also offered an acceptable shift back into full-time work after a long absence.
The necessity of close cooperation when sharing a job with another person makes the actual work quite different from conventional one-position jobs. However, to ensure a greater chance that the partnership will succeed, each person needs to know the strengths, weaknesses and preferences of his or her partner before applying for a position. Moreover, there must be a fair division of both routine tasks and interesting ones. In sum, for a position to be job-shared well, the two individuals must be well matched and must treat each other as equals.
44. In what way is work sharing different from job sharing?
A. Work sharing requires more working hours.
B. Work sharing is aimed at creating more jobs.
C. Work sharing provides a more satisfactory salary.
D. Work sharing depends on the employer’s decision.
45. According to paragraph4, young mothers preferred job sharing to conventional part-time work mainly because______.
A. they sought higher social status
B. they were over ideal working ages
C. they had difficulty finding full-time jobs
D. they had to take care of both work and family
46. In job sharing the partners should ______.
A. enjoy equal social status
B. have similar work experience
C. keep in touch with each other
D. know each other very well

I started to study English by myself when I was about 15 because of Michael Jackson. He’s been my idol since 1991, and I really wanted to understand him and his music. 51 I was very patient, and that helped me a lot in the process of learning English by myself.
Actually, I can’t describe the techniques I used to learn it, because it was almost automatic for me to start understanding English after a period of hard work trying to translate texts, dialogues and songs. 52
One thing that I can say is that I started learning English through comparing patterns and observing the language structure, comparing it to Portuguese and trying to memorize rules. 53 Another thing that helped me a lot is the fact that I would spend hours studying the uses, tenses, etc. of the words I could notice.
54 It was the hardest part of the process for me, because the only source I had was music, although I used a pronunciation dictionary , too.
55 Later on I entered UFMG and really started studying English. Today I’m a teacher at an English Course, and I really enjoy it, because I can improve my English each day.
Despite the difficulty, I could learn everything well.
So I really can’t say exactly how I’ve achieved proficiency(熟练).
With the help of my teacher, I learned pronunciation well.
So I can say that a strong will is the key to my success.
After having a large vocabulary, I started working on pronunciation.
And I used to make lists of words in order to memorize them and their meanings.
I used to use a dictionary to find the meaning of each word in songs written by him.

Mobile phones are being more wide used. They’re light in weight and easy to carry, offer fast and convenient service for communication. The users use them for making phone call, sending short messages and Internet-surfing. In recently years, mobile phones have become popular to middle school students. Quite few use them to keep in touch with their families and friends, what, of course, was of great convenience. However, I don’t think it’s good to do so. In spite of the advantages mentioned above, student users often waste a lot of time chat on the phone in their spare time. Some even cheat in exams. In addition to, mobile phone bills cost their parents lots of money.

第四节:阅读理解(20小题,每小题2分;共计40分)
A
Around the world young people are spending unbelievable sums of money to listen to rock music. Forbes Magazine reports that at least fifty rock stars have incomes between two million and six million dollars every year.
"It doesn't make sense. "says Johnny Mathis, one of the older music millionaires, who made a million dollars a year when he was popular, in 1950s."Performers aren't worth this kind of money. In fact, nobody is."
But the rock stars' admirers seem to disagree. Those who love rock music spend about two billion dollars a year for records. They pay 150 million to see rock stars in person.
Luck is a key word for explaining the success of many. In 1972 one of the luckiest was Kon Mclean, who wrote and sang "American Pie". Mclean writes his own music, so he earns an extra two cents on every single record of the song.
Neil Young who performs in torn blue jeans, sometimes sings to an audience of 10,000, each of whom has paid five dollars for a ticket. After paying expense, Young leaves with about 18,000 in his blue jeans at the end of an evening.
How do the rock stars use their money? What do they do when the money stars pouring in like water? Most of the young stars simply show the money around. England's Elton John gave someone a $38,000 Rolls Royce car and bought himself 5,000 pairs of eyeglasses then lighted up and spelt E-L-T-O-N. He also bought himself two cars, "one for each foot."
Many rock stars live like Grace Slick and Jefferson Airplane. Those performers return from a tour, pay their bills, and buy new toys. Then when they need money again, they do another tour. They save no money and live from hand to mouth.
After two or three years riches and fame(名声) are gone. Left with his memories and his tax problems, the lonely ex-performer spends his remaining years trying to attract strangers. But new stars have arrived to take his place.
56. This passage is mainly about _____.
A. the success of a rock star B. the way rock stars live
C. rich rock stars D. the admirers of rock stars
57. What makes most of the rock stars successful in making money?
A. Luck. B. A wonderful performance.

58. How much expense does Neil Young pay for a performance?
A. $10,000. B. $18,000. C. $32,000. D. $38,000.
59. According to the passage, the underlined phrase "from hand to mouth" means ____.
A. they have to earn money by hand
B. they know how to spend money in a reasonable way
C. they earn money only for their immediate enjoyment
D. they steal to feed their mouth when they need money

Tourism probably started in Roman times. Rich Romans visited friends and family who were working in another part of the Roman empire. But when the empire broke down, this kind of tourism stopped.
In the early 17th century, the idea of the “Grand Tour” was born. Rich young English people sailed across the English Channel ( 英吉利海峡 ). They visited the most beautiful and important European cities of the time, including Paris in France, and Rome and Venice ( 威尼斯 ) in Italy. Their tours lasted for two to four years, and the tourists stayed a few weeks or months in each city. The “Grand Tour” was an important part of young people’s education --- but only for the rich.
In the 18th century, tourism began to change. For example, people in the UK started to visit some towns, such as Bath to “take the waters”. They believed that the water there was good for their health. So large and expensive hotels were built in these towns.
In the 19th century, travel became much more popular and faster. When the first railways were built in the 1820s, it was easier for people to travel between towns, so they started to go for holidays by the sea. And some started to have holidays in the countryside as cities became larger , noisier and dirtier.
Traveling by sea also became faster and safer when the first steamships were built. People began to travel more to far away countries.
The 20th century saw cars become more and more popular among ordinary people. Planes were made larger, so ticket prices dropped and more people used them.
Thus tourism grew. In 1949, Russian journalist Vladimir Raitz started a company called Horizon Holidays. The company organizes everything --- plane tickets, hotel rooms, even food --- and tourists pay for it all before they leave home. The package tour and modern tourist industry was born.
The first travel agency in China was set up as early as 1949. But tourism did not take off until 1978. In 2002, the industry was worth 500 billion yuan and became an important part of China’s social development.

The Peales were a famous family of American artists. Charles Willson Peale is best remembered for his portraits of leading figures of the American Revolution. He painted portraits of Franklin and Jefferson and over a dozen of George Washington. His life-size portrait of his sons Raphaelle and Titian was so realistic that George Washington reportedly once tipped his hat to the figures in the picture.
Charles Willson Peale gave up painting in his middle age and devoted his life to the Peale museum, which he founded in Philadelphia. The world’s first popular museum of art and natural science mainly covered paintings by Peale and his family as well as displays of animals in their natural settings. Peale found the animals himself and found a method to make the exhibits more lifelike. The museum’s most popular display was the skeleton (骷髅) of a huge, extinct elephant, which Peale unearthed on a New York farm in 1801.
Three of Peale’s seventeen children were also famous artists. Paphaelle Peale often painted still lives of flowers, fruit, and cheese. His brother Rembrandt studied under his father and painted portraits of many noted people, including one of George Washington. Another brother, Rubens Peale, painted mostly landscapes and portraits.

Never go into a supermarket hungry! This is a good piece of advice. If you go shopping for food before lunchtime, you’ll probably buy more than you plan to. Unfortunately, however, just this advice isn’t enough for consumers these days. Modern shoppers need an education in how and how not to buy things at the store. First, you check the weekly newspaper ads. Find out the items that are on sale and decide if you really need these things. In other words, don’t buy anything just because it’s cheaper than usual! “New and Improved!” or “All Natural” on the front of a package influence you. Instead, read the list of ingredients(contents) on the back. Third, compare prices: that is, you should examine the prices of both different brands and different sizes of the same brand.
Another suggestion for consumers is to buy ordinary items instead of famous brands. Ordinary items in supermarkets come in plain packages. These products are cheaper because producers don’t spend much money on packing or advertising. The quality, however, is usually as good as the quality of well-known brands. In the same way, in buying clothes, you can often find high quality and low prices in brands that are not famous. Shopping in discount clothing stores can help you save a lot of money. Although these stores aren’t very attractive, and they usually do not have individual dressing rooms, not only are the prices low, but you can often find the same famous brands that you find in high-priced department stores.
Wise consumers read magazine ads and watch TV commercials, but they do this with one advantage: knowledge of the psychology behind the ads. In other words, well-informed consumers watch for information and check for misinformation. They ask themselves questions: Is the advertiser hiding something in small print at the bottom of the page? Is there any real information in the commercial, or is the advertiser simply showing an attractive image? With the answers to these questions, consumers can make a wise choice.
72. All the following statements are true about the phrase “ordinary items” in Paragraph 2 except ____.
A. ordinary items never say “New and Improved” or “All Natural”
B. ordinary products are usually cheaper than famous brands
C. producers spend less money on packaging of ordinary items
D. the quality of ordinary items is usually as good as that of famous brands
73. What does the writer think about ads?
A. They are believable. B. They are attractive.
C. They are full of misinformation. D. They are helpful to consumers.
74. One of the author’s suggestions to consumers is ____.
A. to make use of ads
B. not to buy items with words like “New and Improved” or “All Natural”
C. to buy high quality items such as famous brands after lunch
D. to buy any ordinary items instead of famous brands
75. The author implies that ____.
A. going into the supermarket hungry, you may buy more than you plan to
B. the quality of ordinary items is usually high and the prices are relatively low
C. discount clothing stores are good places to go to
D. ads sometimes don’t tell the truth

Good afternoon, everyone.
On the morning of April 29, 2007, from 10:00 to 11:00, hundreds of millions of students from primary, middle schools and universities all over China joined in a national student sports program. Eleven million students in Liaoning took an active part in this program.
The Ministry of Education calls on students to exercise for an hour every day, in the hope that they will have good health to work fifty years and enjoy the whole life.
Personally, I think it a good idea for us senior 3 students to have daily exercise. Although we take an hour a day for exercise, it is well worth it. Taking exercise helps us build up our body and keep a clear mind. Therefore, we can work more efficiently.
Thank you!
