What are the biggest challenges?of playing the pipa and the guzheng?
If your technique is not good enough, it is impossible to play classical Chinese pipa music?. Also, the repertoire? for the pipa is large — some pieces were written during the Tang Dynasty.
There are many different pipa schools, and each one has its special way? of interpreting? the classical pieces. The biggest challenge is to respect the traditions but to add my own style. The same is true of? my second instrument, the guzheng.

Part 2
Who or what are your musical influences??
The main influence is traditional singing. I listened to traditional opera singing and folk songs in my childhood. Now when I am playing a tune, I am singing in my heart. When I'm playing a sad tune, I am crying in my heart. Listeners often say that they can hear singing in my music.
What characteristicsof Chinese classical music do you try to show in your playing?
Firstly, Chinese music is similar to the Chinese language. In Chinese, the same pronunciation with different tones has different meanings. The same is true for music. Secondly, classical Chinese music is closely connected to Chinese poetry, so it isn't surprising that most classical pieces have very poetic titles. Thirdly, classical Chinese music and traditional Chinese painting are like twin sisters. In Chinese art, there are some empty spaces, which are very important. They give life to the whole painting and they allow people to come into the picture, like a dialogue.
It'sthe same with classical Chinese music. There are empty spaces, and people say the silence is full of music. The pipa sounds and the pauses combine to make a poetry of sound. Listeners can experience the power and the beauty of the music, like enjoying a beautiful poem or painting.
?influence n.影响

allow sb. to do sth.
allow doing sth.
(be) the same with与……

Part 3
What do you like best about performing live?
I enjoy playing and I enjoy performing in public. I like the atmosphere in a concert hall and I always feel happy when I have a concert. I feel a little depressed or lonely when there is no concert for a long time. I also enjoy the time immediately after the concert to share the feelings and ideas with friends and music lovers, listening to their impressions and understanding about the music. I love my career. I also enjoy travelling: I enjoy sitting in a plane dreaming, or staying in a hotel.
depress/dI'pres/v.
share (the) feelings and ideas with与……
listening to ...
career n.
career soldier/teacher职业军人/教师
What are your goalsas an artist?
I don't have a particular goal. But I hope to work with many composers, and I also wish to compose my own music. My background is traditional Chinese music. Since I moved to Canada, I have had opportunities to make contact with other musical traditions and play with mastermusicians. I wish to continue working with master musicians from other traditions and to be able to compose my own music, using elements from different cultures. I also wish to introduce classical Chinese pipa and guzheng music to every corner of the world.

A
A couple of years ago, music psychologist Elizabeth Margulis decided to make some changes to the music of Luciano Berio. Berio was one of the most famous classical composers of the 20th century. After loading his most famous piece into a computer editing program, she just randomly started cutting.
The idea behind this act was simple: Margulis wanted to see if she could make people like Berio's music more by making it more repetitive.
Margulis knew that 90 percent of the music we listen to is music we've heard before. We return again and again to our favorite songs, listening over and over to the same musical riffs (重复乐段), which themselves repeat over and over inside the music, and she'd become obsessed with understanding why repetition is so compelling (引人入胜的). This is why she was razoring (剃) the music of Berio — because his music isn't at all repetitive.
We are drawn to repetition. It surrounds us, not just in modern American pop music, Margulis says, but everywhere. “Musical repetitiveness isn't really an individual feature of music that's arisen over the past few hundred years in the West,” she says. “It seems to be a cultural universal. Not only does every known human culture make music, but also, every known human culture makes music in which repetition is a defining (典型的) element.”
Why? One part of the answer is what's known as the mere exposure effect.
Psychologists have found that people tend to start off wary (谨慎的) of — or even unfriendly to — new things, which makes sense from an evolutionary perspective. But then the act of mere exposure changes our feelings. We typically feel more warmly toward things we encounter again and again.
So mere exposure is one of the reasons we respond so well to repetition — both of music and in music — but Margulis clearly doesn't think it's the whole story. She says repetition also allows us to shift (转移) our attention around, from the surface aspects of the music to other aspects. So basically, part of what the repetition in music allows us to do is leave ourselves. In some small way, it allows us to shift and adjust our reality. And reality can often use some adjusting.

Marc Yu, a nine-year-old boy from California, has achieved more than most musicians do in their whole life. He has learned two musical instruments, played the piano at the most famous US concerts and won a couple of musical scholarship.
Marc was an unusual child even as a baby. At just six months of age, he would sit through a two-hour classical music concert. By the time he was two, he started to read and sing Beethovensymphonies (交响曲). While his mother thought this was unusual, she did not realize his musical gifts until he was at a friend's party and started to play a nursery rhyme on the piano.
With lessons from his mom and then a professional teacher, Marc's skills improved a lot. By the time he was five, he had learned another musical instrument — the cello(大提琴). When he was just six and a half, he picked up a famous prize — the Davidson Fellowship in Music, which is usually given to musicians 18 or older.
After making his orchestra debut (初次演出) at the age of six, there has been no looking back for this musical genius. He is always traveling, either to perform at concerts or for piano lessons.
On August 31st, Marc will perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London, England, one of the world's most famous concert halls. He will be playing the piano alongside Lang Lang, a classical pianist, who has performed at the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Games.
While Marc, who is home-schooled, likes his music very much and practices 5-6 hours a day, he is by no means a bookworm (书呆子). He loves to play soccer with his friends and has a great sense of humor.

The playing field is never even (不相上下的) or equal. Your skills and attitude play a major role in the outcome. Knowing what you can do to have an advantage can be the difference in success or failure.
My kids tell me it's unfair to play with the big children; I tell them that's right. Unfairness is a good thing. There is more to be gained by the effort when things seem unfair. It is true that many things in the world are unfair. But unfair things usually can be a boon for you. For example, the early bird catches the worm. It is unfair that the bird that sleeps in misses out on breakfast but it is nice to know that if he gets up early he is sure to get the worm.
I always try to explain to my kids that complaining about how unfair the thing is will get them nowhere. Instead, make use of it and get on the other side of it. Once you do that you are at an advantage. Above all, you have to focus on gaining the unfair advantage and you have to build your inner strength. When you empower yourself (武装自己), you are gaining skills or abilities, confidence and self esteem (自尊). You should look at your place in the world. Where do you want to be financially, spiritually, emotionally, and physically? You are creating your own story when you empower yourself.
You can build all the advantages that you need to live the life that you want. If you haven't yet, you need to make a list of all the things you want to experience in your new life. This will help you focus on building the advantage so that you never have to say that it's Not Fair. When you do this then you will be able to realize that Not Fair is a good thing and you will want to teach those around you to see Not Fair in this way too.
8.The author uses the example of the playing field to ________.
A.support his opinion
B.introduce his topic
C.tell us that having an advantage is needed
D.show that skills and attitudes are important in playing games

9.What does the underlined word “boon” in Para.2 probably mean?
A.Something that is very terrible.
B.Something that is very kind.
C.Something that is very helpful.
D.Something that is very scared.

10.You are told to look at your place in the world in order to ________.
A.be proud of yourself
B.make yourself well known
C.have more confidence
D.find out what you lack
11.What does the author mainly tell readers in the article?
A.How to live a happy new life.
B.Being calm when treated badly.
C.The right attitude to the unfair.
D.Being patient enough to succeed.

Street Music
It's a warm Saturday afternoon in a busy side road① in the old district of Barcelona. The pedestrians② are standing in a semi-circle③ around someone or something in front of the cathedral④. I push my way through⑤ the crowd and find a quartet⑥ of musicians playing a violin suite⑦ of classical music⑧. Thesession⑨ lasts ten minutes. Then one of the musicians picks up⑩ a saucer? on the ground, and asks for money. All contributions? are voluntary?, no one has to pay, but the crowd shrinks??as some people slide away?. But others happily throw in a few coins. They're grateful for this brief interval? of music as they go shopping?.
Below the window of my apartment in Paris, a music man takes a place? made vacant? by an earlier musician. He raises the lid of his barrel organ and turns the handle. Then he sings the songs of old Paris, songs of the people and their love affairs. I remember some of the words even though I have never consciously learnt them. I tap my feet and sing along with him. Down there on the pavement, few passersby stop. Some smile, others walk past with their heads down. Cars pass, gangs of boys form and disappear, someone even puts a coin in the cup on the organ. But the music man ignores them all. He's hot in the sun, so he mops his head with a spotted handkerchief. He just keeps singing and turning the handle.

In Harlem, New York, some locals place a sound system by an open window. They plug it into the electrical socket, and all of a sudden, there's dancing in the streets. In downtown Tokyo, young couples eat popcorn and dance to the music of a rockabilly band, which plays American music from the Fifties. In the London Underground a student plays classical guitar music, which echoes along the tunnels. It lifts the spirits of the passengers, who hurry past on their way to work. In a street in Vienna or Prague or Milan a group of pipe musicians from the far Andes fill the air with the sounds of South America.
The street musician is keeping alive a culture which has almost disappeared in our busy, organised, and regulated lives: the sound of music when you least expect it. In a recording studio, even when relayed by microphone, music loses some of its liveliness. But street music gives life to everyone who listens and offers relief from the cares of the day. It only exists in the present, it only has meaning in the context. It needs space.

Drawing upon? more than 1,500 years of Chinese music, Twelve Girls Band mixes this rich tradition with? classical, folk and contemporary sounds. The group signifies? the symbolic choice of a dozen members found in various aspects of Chinese numerology with 12 months in a year, and in ancient mythology, 12 jinchai (golden hairpins, which represent womanhood). Inspiration also comes from yuefang, the female chamber orchestras that played in the royal courts of the Tang Dynasty.
Each member of Twelve Girls Band has classical training, with backgrounds that include the China Academy of Music, the Chinese National Orchestra, and the Central Conservatory of Music. Skilled multi- instrumentalists, they perform on traditional Chinese instruments that include the guzheng, the yangqin, the erhu, the pipa and the dizi and xiao.
The group's appeal is equally as broad, with children, teens, adults and grandparents filling arenas to see it perform. American critics noticed the mixture of pieces by Mozart and Beethoven, with jazz standards like Dave Brubeck's TakeFive, or a version of a much-loved classic such as Simon and Garfunkel's ElCondorPasa.
The group honours its musical heritage and shows a genuine love for all styles of music — from complex classical works to long-lasting pop tunes.

My six-year-old daughter lay in the hospital bed. “Mommy?” she asked. “Will you stay with me the whole time?”“You know I can't be in the operating room,” I said carefully, not wanting to scare her. “But Daddy and I will be waiting right outside.” Elizabeth nodded (点头), but her eyes looked troubled. It had been too long since I saw that big smile of hers.
I wanted to tell her everything would be okay and promise that this would be the last time she'd have to go through. But what if something went wrong again? She'd been so brave that day of the accident. When she fell off her bike in our backyard, I rushed her to the emergency room, trying not to panic. After she had spent three weeks in a cast (石膏), her leg didn't improve. Now she needed surgery. How could I comfort her when I needed comfort myself?
There was a knock at the door. A nurse? But a woman without a white coat came in. “Hi!” the woman said. “I'm the chaplain (牧师) here, and I've got a present for Elizabeth.” She handed a bright-blue box to my daughter. Elizabeth sat up, opened the gift and started pulling out the items one by one: candies, crayons, and a toy in the shape of a star. She hugged the star, cheering up for the first time after she entered the hospital. “Thank you,” she said. She looked through the box once more. She pulled out a card. “Mommy, look!”“A card,” I said. I held her hand and read aloud: “Keep me in the loving care and bless all those who love me too.”
There was that big smile of hers! I looked at the box closely. The sentence “It's for kids' comfort” with the name of the charitable organization was written across the front. I thanked the chaplain again and again. I thought it was not only for kids' comfort but for moms' too.

One kind of the worst agricultural pests in the United States is about to get a whole lot worse. According to the new research, the effects of climate change have caused harmful insects known as potato leafhoppers (蚕虫微叶蝉) to arrive a full 10 days earlier than they did 60 years ago. Not only that, but also the research shows that bug infestation (侵扰) levels are worse in warmer years, meaning they will cause a much greater threat than they have for decades.
In turn, the warmer weather may push the insects to travel farther north than they typically care to, meaning potato leafhoppers could soon move into regions where they now aren’t causing much threat.
Potato leafhoppers migrate yearly from Southern states all the way into the northernmost US states and Canada. The_bugs_cause_millions_of_dollars’_worth_of_damage_to_agricultural crops_every_year, cutting into_farmers’ potato,_alfalfa,_and_hops_profits.
They can feed on the sap (树液) of more than 100 plant species, but they don’t kill plants immediately. Their toxin (毒素) causes plants to dry, lowering crop yields. Because of the bug’s size, farmers often don’t know when potato leafhoppers have invaded until they see the crop damage.
The danger could harm the industry. Farmers have turned to pesticides and leafhopper-resistant strains of alfalfa to control past infestations, but they may not be prepared if the insects continue to arrive earlier and infestation levels keep increasing.
The researchers weren’t surprised when they found the insects were now arriving 10 days earlier in warmer years. Early migration trends caused by climate change have been observed in mammals, birds, and other species.

B.They have been moving north all these years.

Dear Lucy,
Thanks for your letter. You asked me something about the music in my life. Let me tell you briefly.
Music is an important part in my life. I even can’t live without music. Actually, I like many kinds of music. Well, my favourite music is American Country Music, such as “Country Road”. It mixes some modern melodies; it sounds very nice and pure and can bring me into dreamland. Whenever I am in trouble, I will turn on the MP5 or the tape recorder and the soft melody will make me relaxed.
I’m not interested in rock music. I think it is too loud and very difficult for me to understand! The melody is not soft and nice at all! I can’t stand the strong beat, which nearly makes me faint!
In a word, music has a very important place in my life.
How about you? Write to tell me about music in your life. I am looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
Module 4 Music
No music, no life! Music can help us relax, give life to those who are depressed and offer relief from a day's hard work. Most people like appreciating music or dancing to the music. Today we'll introduce a band and a pipa and guzheng soloist.
The band is named Twelve Girls Band, founded in June 2001. At first it wasn't famous, but all of a suddenit became popular in Japan. Now the band has become one of the most popular groups at home and abroad. The members of Twelve Girls Band come from such famous colleges and universities as China Academy of Music and Central Conservatory of Music.Drawing upon over 1,500 years of Chinese music, the band charms the world. They have been presented with awards many times. Their records have become its fans' collections. The band honours its music heritage and shows a genuine love for all styles of music.
The soloist is Liu Fang, an international music star.In addition to pipa, she also plays guzheng. She is good at playing folk songs. Meanwhile, she combines Chinese traditional music with western music. Liu Fang had a great gift for music as a child, therefore her mother sent her to play pipa. She has given concerts since 11. While playing pipa, the biggest challenge is to respect traditions and add her own style. The same is true of guzheng. Now, Liu Fang lives in Canada, where she oftenmakes contacts with master musicians, sharing feelings and ideas with them. She's also voluntary to give some bands directions.Regarding her ambition she wants to compose music and introduce Chinese classical music to every corner of the world.

A
A couple of years ago, music psychologist Elizabeth Margulis decided to make some changes to the music of Luciano Berio. Berio was one of the most famous classical composers of the 20th century. After loading his most famous piece into a computer editing program, she just randomly started cutting.
The idea behind this act was simple: Margulis wanted to see if she could make people like Berio’s music more by making it more repetitive.
Margulis knew that 90 percent of the music we listen to is music we’ve heard before. We return again and again to our favorite songs, listening over and over to the same musical riffs (重复乐段), which themselves repeat over and over inside the music, and she’d become obsessed with understanding why repetition is so compelling (引人入胜的). This is why she was razoring (剃) the music of Berio — because his music isn’t at all repetitive.
We are drawn to repetition. It surrounds us, not just in modern American pop music, Margulis says, but everywhere. “Musical repetitiveness isn’t really an individual feature of music that’s arisen over the past few hundred years in the West,” she says. “It seems to be a cultural universal. Not only does every known human culture make music, but also, every known human culture makes music in which repetition is a defining (典型的) element.”
Why? One part of the answer is what’s known as the mere exposure effect.
Psychologists have found that people tend to start off wary (谨慎的) of — or even unfriendly to — new things, which makes sense from an evolutionary perspective. But then the act of mere exposure changes our feelings. We typically feel more warmly toward things we encounter again and again.
So mere exposure is one of the reasons we respond so well to repetition — both of music and in music — but Margulis clearly doesn’t think it’s the whole story.

By the time he was two, he started to read and sing Beethoven symphonies (交响曲). While his mother thought this was unusual, she did not realize his musical gifts until he was at a friend’s party and started to play a nursery rhyme on the piano.
With lessons from his mom and then a professional teacher, Marc’s skills improved a lot.
On August 31st, Marc will perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London, England, one of the world’s most famous concert halls.

My kids tell me it’s unfair to play with the big children; I tell them that’s right.
If you haven’t yet, you need to make a list of all the things you want to experience in your new life. This will help you focus on building the advantage so that you never have to say that it’s Not Fair. When you do this then you will be able to realize that Not Fair is a good thing and you will want to teach those around you to see Not Fair in this way too.

My six-year-old daughter lay in the hospital bed. “Mommy?” she asked. “Will you stay with me the whole time?”“You know I can’t be in the operating room,” I said carefully, not wanting to scare her. “But Daddy and I will be waiting right outside.” Elizabeth nodded (点头), but her eyes looked troubled. It had been too long since I saw that big smile of hers.
I wanted to tell her everything would be okay and promise that this would be the last time she’d have to go through. But what if something went wrong again? She’d been so brave that day of the accident. When she fell off her bike in our backyard, I rushed her to the emergency room, trying not to panic. After she had spent three weeks in a cast (石膏), her leg didn’t improve. Now she needed surgery. How could I comfort her when I needed comfort myself?
There was a knock at the door. A nurse? But a woman without a white coat came in. “Hi!” the woman said. “I’m the chaplain (牧师) here, and I’ve got a present for Elizabeth.” She handed a bright-blue box to my daughter.
The sentence “It’s for kids’ comfort” with the name of the charitable organization was written across the front. I thanked the chaplain again and again. I thought it was not only for kids’ comfort but for moms’ too.
