Text 10
W:Last night I had a frightening experience. While I was eating dinner at the fast food restaurant where I normally go when I’m in a hurry, the manager announced that everybody had to leave the building. The place was crowded and that made the situation dangerous, as everyone was determined to get out first. To make matters worse, an elderly woman, who must have weighed 300 pounds, had just come up to the entrance, which was also the only exit. In the meantime, I remembered that I had left my purse in the chair I had been occupying when the announcement was made. It was certainly not convenient to return and get it, but I had to do it. When I finally got outside, I saw that the police bomb team had arrived and the men were studying the area. They finally found out that it was all a false alarm and the crowd went away.

Can you imagine how difficult it is to really master English and speak it as fluently as a native speaker? Visit Engrish.com and you will find that it is unbelievably challenging. This website was created in 1996 with the aim of having fun with, not making fun of the Engrish phenomenon. “Engrish” is considered as the flawed English found in Japan and other East Asian countries.
The term Engrish describes the tendency of Japanese people to confuse the English phonemes (音素)“R” and “L”. Other famous mistakes due to phonetic differences include the misuse of the word “Engrand”(instead of“England”) and “baby-shiner”(in place of “baby-sitter”).Grammatical mistakes may involve using a noun as a verb with “Let’s” as in “Let’s beer.” Unnecessary wording like “Let’s play with me!” is also very common. The classic Engrish “I feel Coke” is a well-known example of getting rid of connecting words.
Amused by these humorous mistakes, you may wonder why the Japanese don’t get some translators or consult native English speakers for corrections. The fact is that there is often no attempt to get it right. For one thing, some Japanese companies do not regard English as a means of communication. Rather, they use English as part of the design in Japanese products and advertising to give them a modern look and feel, or just to “look cool”. Moreover, some Japanese people or companies simply do not have the resources they would need if they wanted to get their English carefully checked. Although most Japanese study English for anywhere from 6 to 10 years as a second language, they cannot easily find native English speakers to practice with.
Engrish can be found everywhere in Japan, including on signs, menus, and in advertisements. So, the next time you see the elevator at your school labeled as a “Disabled Elevator” or the public toilets outside the MRT station marked “Out-Toilet”, feel free to take photographs and send them to Engrish.com. The webmasters of Engrish. com will be more than willing to showcase them on their website!

At the age of 16, Julia Butterfly Hill quit school and worked at a restaurant. For many years, she was only interested in making money and material things. Then one day she had a serious car accident, which changed her life. Hill said:“I realized I wanted to find a more powerful purpose for being here on this planet.”
As soon as she recovered, Hill traveled to California. There she saw ancient redwood trees, which are the largest trees in the whole world. The wood from redwood trunks is very hard. So the Pacific Lumber Company cut down many of the huge redwoods to use for construction. There are not many forests of these trees left. Many environmental activists want to protect the remaining trees. The redwoods are very important to the environment.
In 1997 Hill learned a group called Earth First was working to protect a particular group of trees. They decided to send someone up into a redwood tree, hoping this would stop the company from cutting the trees down. Julia Butterfly Hill volunteered.
Hill lived in the tree for over two years without ever coming down. Her home was a 6-by-8-foot tree house, 180 feet up. It is always cold and wet in a redwood tree. There were even very serious winter storms while Hill was in the tree. The wind and cold almost knocked Hill out of the tree. But she did not fall — she survived.
Finally, after years of arguing, the company decided to protect Luna, the tree Hill lived in. They signed an agreement to never cut down this huge redwood tree or the trees around it. When Hill put her feet on the earth again, she began to cry. But from that moment on Hill hasn’t stopped working to protect the environment.

As a senior, I realised it was time to make one of the biggest decisions of my life, but I was absolutely short of talent. My friends were applying to schools like Tufts and Berkeley, while the only planning I had done was for the coming weekend. I wasn’t ready for college. I was frightened and didn’t know what to do.
My parents agreed that I was short of talent. “Maybe you should go to preparatory school (预科学校) for an additional year,” my mother suggested. Preparatory school? Was she crazy? I wasn’t the greatest student, but I couldn’t go to a preparatory school. I thought that was for stupid kids — kids who don’t get good jobs or succeed in life.
My grandfather, who recently passed on, has been the greatest influence on my life. I knew that he graduated from a top college, Bowdoin, but what I didn’t know was that he got in after attending preparatory school. I realised this was my best bet, but feared finding the perfect school would be difficult.
Then, I heard about New Hampton School from a friend and decided to visit. I was blown away and immediately felt comfortable. I became hesitant (犹豫的) to visit other schools because I couldn’t imagine any other would be as educating as New Hampton. The staff gave me a warm feeling, which meant a lot to a kid from a small town. Even though I’m a senior, I will be able to better prepare myself for college at New Hampton School. I feel the staff will help me get that extra year of development to make sure that I will be ready for college. Then I’ll go.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg __61__ (recent) surprised Chinese students when he spoke to __62__ in Chinese. In a talk at Tsinghua University in Beijing, Zuckerberg spoke Chinese for about 30 minutes. __63__ his Chinese was far from perfect, students and faculty cheered his effort.
Clayton Dube is the head of the U.S.-China Institute at the University of Southern California. He praises Zuckerberg’s effort and thinks more American CEOs should learn foreign __64__ (language).
“To speak Chinese __65__ (mean) you begin to think as Chinese people do. You begin to understand how Chinese speakers have the world __66__ (organise), and how they understand things. And that is __67__ vital step if you’re going to be culturally __68__ (qualify).”
Zuckerberg’s talk raises a larger question: Is Chinese the language of the future? Could it replace English as the world’s international language? Chinese already has the most native speakers of any language. And, China may soon pass the United States as the world’s __69__ (large) economy.
The study of the Chinese language is increasing in the United States and around the world. In 2009, about 60,000 __70__ (America) college students were studying Chinese. That is three times as many as in 1990.

65.________ 66.________ 67.________ 68.________
69.________ 70.________

64.languages language

As a tour guide, I’m glad to tell you that more and more tourists are paying attentions to environment protection. Several years before, in one place of interest I saw rubbish throwing away everywhere, such as waste paper, plastic bags. However, some tourists climbed trees or picked up flowers. Some even scared or catch little animals. What’s more, some of them made a fire to cook, which might cause a forest fire. Recently great changes had taken place. Most tourists take rubbish away with them while they leave. They no longer hurt little animals . Trees and flowers are well taken care. In the forest, smokers give up smoking so as not to start a fire. Now I sing high praise for so good deeds.
答案:第一句:attentions→attention

Text 10
Most Americans treat their pets like family members. It means Americans love their pets. And they provide them with a proper home, food, exercise, and medical care.Americans love pets and it is not just puppy love. Sometimes, they add to their interest to their pets with entertaining videos and amusing toys.If they have an eye for fashion, pets’ owners can dress their pets in pretty clothes. For special occasions, they can use perfume to make their dogs smell nice or less basely. You might see Americans treat their pets like they treat their children, sometimes even better. The most common pets in the US are dogs, cats, birds and fish. Pets, such as dogs and cats, make good companions. But in addition to providing good companionship, pets are useful too. For example, dogs guard property, heard cattle and sheep, and lead the blind.Monkeys, unusual pets in the US, will soon become useful pets for disabled persons.Scientists are now training monkeys to help disabled persons do some simple tasks, such as eating, cleaning the house and even changing the channel on the TV set.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
It was around the 4th grade when I started noticing that I didn’t fit in that well with a lot of kids in my grade. While the other girls were starting to wear make-up, style their hair, and only wear fashionable clothing, I stayed the same. At first I didn’t care, but then I started to feel a little worried. I was afraid that the other girls wouldn’t like me. I wanted to be like them, but I really hated that.
After I entered the 5th grade my mom found a local vocal (歌唱的) studio. I had always loved to sing, and taking lessons seemed like fun. I was thrown into a brilliant world of music. Something inside me just clicked, and I had finally found where I belonged. Music gave me a place of my own in the world.
Starting voice lessons was the first of many times that music has changed my life. In the 7th grade, I really didn’t fit in at middle school. Being an athlete is what made you popular, and I was not super athletic. Music saved me again. Every day I knew I could come home from school and sing. I would become someone else. I would let the music fill my body and shine its light in the darkest corners. The light gave me strength. I became friends with other people who were into music. Music also gave me courage.
Friedrich Nietzsche once said, “Life without music would be a mistake.” This is true for me. Without music, my life would be a mistake. Maybe I would have found another hobby, but I doubt that it would help and change me the way music did. I know that music has changed my life.

Dear Dr. Bob,
I was visiting my sister Mary, who has two boys, ages seven and five. They were throwing a ball around the living room. She asked them several times to stop, but they didn’t listen to her. Finally, one of the boys threw the ball and knocked over a lamp. She shouted loudly at them for several minutes. Then, she sent them to their room. She looked at me and said, “They never listen to me.”
Carmen
Dear Carmen,
Your sister needs to be clear to her children what behavior she expects. She should tell her boys, “Don’t throw the ball in the house. If you throw the ball again, I’m going to take it.” Then, she needs to do what she says. Her boys will soon learn to listen to her.
Dr. Bob
Dear Dr. Bob,
I walked into my two-year-old daughter’s bedroom and found her coloring on the wall again with her crayons. I told her, “No! No! Never write on the wall with your crayons. You can only write on paper.” My husband thinks I was too easy on her and that she needed a spanking (打屁股). What is your opinion?
Debbie
Dear Debbie,
You dealt with the situation well. Children this age are too little to understand the relationship between their actions and a spanking. Use this as a warning; it’s time to_babyproof_your_home. When I was in high school, I took part in the Upward Bound Program. There I was influenced by the academic (学业的) success of my tutors. Through Upward Bound I was able to gain skills and opportunities that have helped me become the man that I am today. So I now often give back to enable kids to have the same chances at life that I have had.
Volunteering is the best payback to those who helped me on the road to success. I remember asking a counselor (指导教师) when I was in Upward Bound how I could repay him. He smiled and said, “Shawn, you can help me by helping another.” A statement is so simple, yet so deep in its meaning.
When I got my first volunteer position as a junior counselor at my local Boys and Girls Club, I was eager to be a great role model for the kids. But things did not work out as I thought at first. After about a couple of weeks of volunteering, I felt that my efforts were in_vain. It was a slow process and I got disappointed.
By the time I had reached my wits end and was ready to quit, I overheard some of the kids asking where I was that day. They said they liked having me around. My desire to give back to the community was renewed by the fact that I made a difference. Now the feeling that I can shape someone’s life for the better is amazing.
People volunteer for different reasons. I volunteer because I really want to help. But some volunteer for personal gain. Some people think poorly of it. But I don’t think so. Despite the fact that they are benefiting from volunteering, so are the people they are helping. So it is a good thing. After all we all win when we volunteer. So I appeal to everyone for finding a cause and volunteering. In this way, you will be not only helping others, but also helping yourself.

If the earth’s population is in growth at this rate, there will not be enough resources. By the middle of the 21st century, if present trends continue, we will have used up all the oil that drives our cars, for example. Even if scientists develop new ways of feeding the human race, the crowded conditions on the earth will make it necessary for us to look for open space somewhere else. But none of the other planets in our solar system are capable of supporting life at present. One possible solution to the problem, however, has recently been suggested by American scientist, Professor Carl Sagan.
Sagan believes that before the earth’s resources are completely exhausted it will be possible to change the atmosphere of Venus and so create a new world almost as large as the earth itself. The difficulty is that Venus is much hotter than the earth and there is only a tiny amount of water there.
Sagan proposes that algae organisms (海藻有机体) that can live in extremely hot or cold atmospheres and at the same time produce oxygen, should be bred in condition similar to those on Venus. As soon as this has been done, the algae will be placed in small rockets. Spaceship will then fly to Venus and fire the rockets into the atmosphere. In a fairly short time, the algae will break down the carbon dioxide into oxygen and carbon.
When the algae have done their work, the atmosphere will become cooler, but before man can set foot on Venus it will be necessary for the oxygen to produce rain. The surface of the planet will still be too hot for man to land on but the rain will eventually fall and in a few years something like the earth will be reproduced on Venus.

C.resources D.space
解析:选D 细节理解题。根据第一段第三句“Even if scientists develop new ways of feeding the human race ...look for open space somewhere else.”可知,即使科学家开发出了供养人类的新方式,但是地球上拥挤的状况也使得人们去寻找更开阔的空间。由此可知,人口膨胀最大的问题是空间的问题。故选D项。

Tips to Start Doing Things That You Do Not Like to Do
Even though it is there on our to-do list, we give it less priority (优先权) because we dislike doing it. __36__ On the other side, if you put effort into doing difficult things or those things you do hate to do, you will be able to do harder tasks with confidence later in life. Here are some good-to-know tips that will encourage you to start doing things that you do not like to do:
Stop hating the task. __37__ To become a confident and better person, you should start loving to do difficult things, especially the ones you do not like to do.
Look at the bigger picture. If you meet a difficult task, instead of shying away from it, take some time and think about it. What is the major reason behind doing this task? __38__ You need to look at the bigger picture instead of just thinking about the task.
Overcome your fear. One thing that stops you from carrying out the task is fear. You may develop a fear, thinking that the task is very difficult or you are not comfortable when doing it. You can never overcome fear by running away from it. __39__ Why not face it now and become braver?
__40__ If you think you have enough time on your side, you may not put enough effort into carrying out the task. So, if you limit yourself to carry out a certain task in a set period, you will not waste time but make the best use of it and accomplish the task.
A.Do not think about failure.
B.Set a time period to complete it.
C.Sooner or later you have to face it.
D.What will happen if you complete the task?
E.Life would be boring without difficult situations.
F.Successful people do things they don’t like to do, too.

Text 10
Malls are popular places for Americans to go. Some people spend so much time at malls that they are called “mall rats”. Mall rats shop until they drop in the hundreds of stores under one roof.
People like malls for many reasons. They feel safe because malls have police stations or private security guards. Parking is usually free, and the atmosphere inside is always fine. The newest malls have beautiful rest areas with waterfalls and large green trees.
The largest mall in the United States is the Mall of America in Minnesota. It has 350 stores, eight night clubs, and a seven-acre park! There are parking spaces for 12,750 cars. About 750,000 people shop every week.
The first indoor mall in the United States was built in 1965 in Edina, Minnesota. Now people shop in malls, of course. They also eat in food houses that have food from all over the world. They see movies here. Some people even get their daily exercise by doing the new sport of mall walking. Others go to malls to meet friends. In a word, now residents can actually live in their favorite shopping center.

The city of Angkor was the capital of the Khmer Empire from the 9th to the 15th centuries. It was founded on political and religious ideas adapted from India, and the temples of Angkor were intended as a place of worship (敬拜) for the king.
Angkor Wat was built by King Suryavarman Ⅱ in the 12th century as a vast funerary (丧葬的) temple that would hold his remains, suggesting his permanent identity with Vishnu.
During its six centuries as capital, Angkor went through many changes in architectural styles and in religion. The city of Angkor changed its god from the Hindu god Shiva to the Hindu god Vishnu, and finally to the Mahayana Buddhist goddess Avalokitesvara.
By the late 13th century, the once uncontrolled pace of Angkor’s architectural pursuits (追求) had begun to die down, and a more limited type of religion was on the rise under the growing influence of Theravada Buddhism.
At the same time, Angkor and the Khmer Empire were increasingly threatened and attacked by invading armies. By the 16th century, the golden age of Angkor was over and many of the great temples began to gradually disappear into the jungle.
From the 15th to 19th centuries, Theravada Buddhist monks cared for Angkor Wat, and it is thanks to them that the temple remains mostly safe and sound. Angkor Wat is one of the most important pilgrimage (朝圣) sites in Southeast Asia. Angkor Wat is the best preserved example of Khmer architecture in Cambodia and is so grand in design that some rank it among the Seven Wonders of the World. It appears on the Cambodian national flag, a very rare example of a flag including an image of a building.

Research has found that adults today have fewer friends than they did in the 1980s, and that more people say they have no one to discuss important stuff with.
Play the violin. Not just play it — and sing along. A new study suggests that singing is an effective way to make new friends because it helps us bond quickly with others.
For the study, led by Eiluned Pearce, Ph.D.at Oxford University, researchers looked at participants, aged 18 to 83 in adult education classes organized by the Workers’ Education Association in the UK. Eighty-four participants were enrolled in one of four singing classes; 51 participants were enrolled in one of two creative crafts classes or a creative writing class.
Over a period of seven months, the classes went weekly. During the first, third, and final months, researchers asked participants to tell how close they felt to their classmates. Results showed something surprising. Although participants in all the classes felt closer to their classmates by the study’s end, participants in the singing classes developed that closeness much more quickly.
As for why exactly singing leads to fast group bonding, the researchers say one possible reason is that everyone does it at the same time. Compare that with creative writing or crafting, where everyone is working on an individual project. Another possible cause, according to the researchers, is that singing involves muscular effort, which causes the release of certain molecules (分子) that can make us happier and more willing to cooperate.
The point here is that singing can be a great icebreaker among large groups of strangers, which can lead to individual friendships down the line. “Really close relationships still depend on communication between individuals or much smaller groups,” Pearce said in a release, “but this study shows singing can start the bonding process.”

Do you know why I like playing golf close to Thanksgiving in New England? I usually have the whole course to myself. I enjoy my round just a little bit more when I don’t feel rushed. Yep, this time of year, I can squeeze out 18 holes in about 5 hours.
Now I know what some of you are thinking, “Five hours? Are you crazy? What are you, a tortoise? With no one in front of me, I could finish a round way faster than that!” Yep, I think you could. But if you find yourself alone, on a perfect day, on the golf course, at the end of the season, and you blow through your round in 3 hours ... I have news for you: You’re an idiot.
Why? When we set out to do something, must we do it in the fastest way? How can this possibly make sense for everything we do? I mean I understand haste (匆忙) when the situation requires it. Then how about this one:“What a beautiful day to be out on the golf course! There’s a cool breeze, warm sun and it appears we’re the only group for several holes! Let’s play as fast as humanly possible.”
Sounds preposterous,_right? See, that’s my thought exactly. Yet, there are many, many golfers who are off to the races the second they step foot on the first tee (球座) — like it’s a challenge to finish in record time. You know, they have a golf expression for that.
This is a game you love. You’ve been waiting all the week to play and spending a big sum of money on new golf balls. Then what are you rushing for? Look, no one likes to wait on every hole, but there’s a difference among waiting, slowing down and enjoying. Next time you’ve got a few holes open behind you, slow it down and enjoy — you’ll find 5 hours isn’t so bad after all.
