W:I’m glad I don’t have your job, working all night and sleeping in the daytime.
M:Oh, I stopped that when I got my promotion. Now I’m on three days and off two days.
(Text 2)
W:What do you do to keep in shape?
M:Nothing special. I love to eat out, and I eat whatever I want. But I never eat after nine at night.
(Text 3)
M:I want to put a sofa and a table in the living room.
W:Sounds nice.
M:And I plan to fix a lamp in the kitchen and a new mirror for the bathroom.
(Text 4)
M:Do you like your salad?
W:Yes. It’s nice and fresh. And I’m thinking of some ice cream after it. How about yours?
M:Mine is rather tasteless.
W:Maybe you need to add some salt and olive oil.
(Text 5)
W:Lovely day, isn’t it?
M:Yes, it’s wonderful. Does it rain quite often here?
W:Not really in this season. Usually it rains a lot in spring. Autumn is the best season here.
M:So I am here at the right time.
(Text 6)
W:That was a good meal, Gordon.
M:It sure was. I couldn’t eat another bite.
W:Well, it is getting pretty late. I think we should go home.
M:You’re right. I have to get up early to go to work tomorrow.
W:Let me see how much the bill is.
M:Don’t worry about it. This is my treat.
W:There’s no need for you to pay the whole bill. We’ll go Dutch. This way we will both have money to take a taxi home; otherwise, you will have to walk.
M:Alright.
(Text 7)
M:Hello, police station.
W:Please help me. I’m sure there’s someone outside in the garden trying to get into my house. I can hear a sound like a key in the lock in the back door.
M:Would you give me your name and address, please, Miss?
W:Angela Barton, 15 Park Road, Alford. I live alone and the neighbors are away on holiday. What shall I do? I’m afraid to open the door, because there isn’t a chain on it.
M:No, you’d better not take action. I’ll send a car around straight away. Can I have your telephone number?
W:Yes, 982699.
M:Good. You’d better stay next to the phone until a police car arrives. The car will be there in less than five minutes.
(Text 8)
W:Good day, sir. Where do you want to go?
M:Sogo Department Store, on Jiefang East Road.
W:OK. Do you want me to go by Zhongshan Road or by Xinsheng Bridge?

M:Well, how much does it cost for the first kilometer?
W:Ten yuan. And it will be two yuan for every additional 500 meters. Your destination is about 2 kilometers away.

W:Oh, you must have had a great time. Do you still go swimming on Fridays?
M:No, I’ve changed to the day before Friday because there aren’t so many people then.
W:By the way, I didn’t see you at the park last Sunday afternoon.

W:What did you do after that?
M:We went dancing in the evening and had a great time. What about you?
W:I had a date with some of my friends. What do you do on Tuesdays?
M:Most Tuesdays I have to work late at the office, so there isn’t much time for anything afterwards.
W:Boy, you surely have a full week.

OK, we are here to decide who should be “Teacher of the Year”. We have some excellent teachers that we have to choose from. So let’s get started. First, let’s talk about Mr. Ryan. He’s pretty new to our school — he came here last year. Everyone says he’s inspiring. And he has a lot of energy. Next, Mrs. Lafferty’s on our list. She was“Teacher of the Year” last year! She’s really intelligent and her classes are great. Students love her because she is so encouraging. She always gives support by saying good things. OK, next is Mr Peters. To tell the truth, he isn’t such a popular teacher. His class is hard but he’s serious and people respect him. The last teacher on our list is Ms. Jones. She’s also serious and she works hard. She often stays after school to meet with students to help them with their studies. OK. That’s all the information of these teachers. Why don’t we take a five-minute break to think about this and come back and decide?

第一节(共15小题; 每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

I teach in a college in Henderson, 17 miles down the highway from where I live. One day a few weeks ago I drove those 17 miles to Henderson. I left the highway and turned onto College Drive. I only had to drive a quarter of a mile down the road to the college, but just then my car died. I tried to start it again, but the engine wouldn’t work. So I got my books and walked down the road to the college.
As soon as I got there I called American Automobile Association (美国汽车协会) and arranged for a tow truck (拖车) to meet me at my car after class. The secretary in the Provost’s office asked me what had happened. “This is my lucky day,” I replied, smiling. “Your car broke down and today is your lucky day!” she was puzzled. “What do you mean?”
“I live 17 miles from here,” I replied. “My car could have broken down anywhere along the highway. But it didn’t. Instead, it broke down in the perfect place:off the highway, within walking distance of here. I’m still able to teach my class, and I’ve been able to arrange for the tow truck to meet me after class. If my car was meant to break down today, it couldn’t have been arranged in a more convenient (方便的) fashion.” The secretary’s eyes opened wide, and then she smiled. I smiled back and headed for class.
Bad things can happen to anyone. Instead of feeling upset when something bad happens, we should look at it differently. In this way, we can be cheerful every day.

These days, drugs can be found everywhere, and it may seem like everyone’s doing them. Lots of people are tempted (引诱) by the excitement or escape that drugs seem to offer. But learning the facts about drugs can help you see the risks of chasing this excitement or escape. Here’s what you need to know.
How do drugs work? Drugs are chemicals or substances that change the way our bodies work. When you put them into your body (often by swallowing, breathing in, or injecting them), drugs find their way into your bloodstream and are transported (运输) to parts of your body, such as your brain. In the brain, drugs may either strengthen or dull (使迟钝) your senses, change your sense of alertness (机敏), and sometimes decrease physical pain.
A drug may be helpful or harmful. The effects of drugs can vary depending upon the kind of drug taken, how much is taken, how often it is used, how quickly it gets to the brain, and what other drugs, food, or substances are taken at the same time. Effects can also vary based on the differences in body size, shape, and chemistry.
Although substances can feel good at first, they can eventually do a lot of harm to the body and brain. Drinking alcohol, smoking tobacco, taking illegal drugs, and sniffing glue can all cause serious damage to the human body. Some drugs seriously weaken a person’s ability to make healthy choices and decisions. Teens who drink, for example, are more likely to get involved in (卷入,陷入) dangerous situations, such as driving at top speed under the influence or having unprotected sex.

Modern computer technology has made online friendships possible. Online friends are people who have known each other through the Internet. Are online friendships as beneficial as face-to-face friendships? Can people form strong relationships online?
When you use social networking websites and chat rooms, you can easily find people with interests and hobbies similar to those of yours. Making friends on the Internet is especially good for shy people who feel uncomfortable in social situations. It’s often easier for them to share thoughts and feelings online. What’s more, online friends can make people feel less lonely and help them solve problems.
Although the Internet can encourage friendships, it has a major disadvantage. It’s much easier for some people to deceive others because they’re not face to face. Online friends only tell you what they want you to know. They sometimes exaggerate (夸大) their good qualities and hide the less positive ones, so you can’t be sure of what they are really like.
There are different answers to the second question. Researchers surveyed 2,000 families in the US. The results showed that over 40% of participants (参与者) feel as strongly about their online friends as they do about their offline friends. Researchers also found that it’s not unusual for online friends to become face-to-face friends. However, there are many people who believe that it’s not possible for people to have deep relationships with online friends.
People continue to express different opinions about online friendships. However, most of them would agree that face-to-face friendships cannot be replaced by online friendships. As one life coach says, “A social networking site should only be the ’add on’ in any relationship.”

33.The underlined word “deceive” in Para. 3 probably means “________”.
A.praise B.support C.cheat D.hurt

34.In most people’s opinion, online friendships________.

B.are as important as face-to-face friendships

参考范文:
Dear Jin Jing,
Your problem is a common one among middle school students. Maybe the following advice can help you. First of all, believe in yourself. Your greatest problem is that you lack self-confidence. The first thing you must do is to smile at your classmates. One smile speaks louder about your wish to make friends than any words. Your smile will show that you are friendly to them. Next, try talking with a student who is as shy as yourself or who shares the same interest as you. You can discuss your studies with a classmate, and you can talk about your hobbies as well. If anyone is in trouble in life or study, you should be ready to help him or her. Once you have confidence, you can make as many friends as possible.

Li Hua

Angkor Wat is in Southeast Asia. It was built during the early years of the 12th century by Suryavarman Ⅱ and is a symbolic representation of Hindu cosmology (宇宙学). The temples of Angkor, built between 802 and 1220 AD,are one of the human’s most surprising achievements. The more than 100 stone temples, which people see today at Angkor, are the remains (遗迹) of a grand religious and social city.
It is generally thought that the area where Angkor stands was chosen because of its military (军事的) advantages. Some researchers, however, believe the place for the Angkor temples was selected based on a holy geography (神圣的地势) from ancient times.
Under the control of Khmer, the city of Angkor became a holy place of importance throughout Southeast Asia. Taken over by the Thais in 1431 and deserted in 1432, Angkor was forgotten for a few centuries. Traveling Buddhist monks came upon the remains. Recognizing the holy nature of the temples but not knowing why they were built, they made up stories about the remains. In the stories, the temples had been built by the gods in a far ancient time. Most people believed the stories to be nothing more than legend (传说) until the French explorer Henri Mouhot brought Angkor to the world’s attention in 1860. The French people loved the ancient city so much that they began to rebuilt it in 1908. The rebuilding project has continued to today, except for periods in the 1970’s and 1980’s because of some wars near the remains.

In 1981, the artist Vitek Kruta escaped to Germany. He was nineteen years old at the time. Vitek’s home was in Prague. He loved his country, but he could not stay there because the government wanted to put him into prison. “The government wanted total control of all art and music,” he explains. “We had to have art shows in secret. My kind of painting was against the law. The rock music that my band played was against the law. There was no future for me there.”
In Germany, Vitek first had to learn the language. He spent eight months taking lessons at a language school. It was easy for him to understand and read German, but he could not speak it. Then one night, he had a dream. In his dream, he started talking with others — in German! The following day, he discovered that he could speak much better.
Next, Vitek got back to his studies in art. He learned to restore (修复) old buildings such as churches and castles. He spent ten years doing this kind of work, and then he faced another_big_change in his life: He got a job offer in the United States. Vitek knew hardly any English, but he did not let that stop him. After all, he had a great deal of experience learning new languages. So he decided to make the move.
Today, Vitek is a painter, an architect (建筑师), and much more. He is a man with a lot of energy. He works in his studio, he teaches art classes, and he manages an art school. He also likes to bring together people with different talents and abilities to do big art projects in public places so that anyone can see and enjoy them. Each year, more than 30,000 elephants are poached (偷猎) for their ivory (象牙). But recently, China — the world’s largest market for ivory products — promised to end its sale of ivory.
“Ending legal sales of ivory in China is the greatest step to reduce elephant poaching in Africa,” says Peter Knights, CEO of the conservation (保护) group WildAid. “We praise China for its leadership.”
Chinese leaders say that the nation will gradually reduce its amount to zero. They are also encouraging other countries to follow China’s lead by taking bigger action against the illegal ivory trade.
Africa once had as many as 3.5 million elephants. Today, only about 500,000 remain. Conservation experts say elephants could someday disappear entirely if the illegal ivory trade does not end.
The international trade of ivory was banned in 1989. However, China has still allowed ivory to be sold. In addition, the US — the second-largest market for ivory — still allows the trade of ivory acquired before the ban. Europeans still support the ivory market by selling ivory from long ago. Many poachers are taking advantage of these rules. They are still illegally hunting elephants for ivory, but selling the ivory in legal markets.
Last week, the US destroyed more than a ton of ivory in New York City’s Times Square to show its commitment (承诺) to ending the illegal ivory trade. China held a similar ivory-crushing event last month, and other countries have done the same in recent years.
Some wildlife supporters say destroying ivory will reduce the supply of ivory, leading to more poaching. But organizers say the events will raise awareness (意识) of the illegal ivory trade and increase support for ending it.
“China, the US, and other major ivory-consuming countries hold the key to saving Africa’s elephants,” says Ginette Hemley, senior vice president of Wildlife Conservation at the World Wildlife Fund.

33.Para. 4 mainly shows ________.
A.the damage caused by legal sales of ivory
B.the step of ending the illegal ivory trade
C.the serious situation of the elephants in Africa
D.the importance of protecting the elephants in Africa
解析:选C 段落大意题。本段列出了非洲象的两组数据——从之前的350万头到现如今的50万头,并讲到专家提醒如果不制止非法象牙交易,非洲象将会灭绝,由此可知本段主要告知读者非洲象的危险处境。
34.What will be the result brought by the ivory-destroying events according to the organizers?
A.More elephants will be killed.
B.The illegal ivory trade will come to an end soon.
C.New ivory markets will be opened in other countries.
D.More countries will take action against the illegal ivory trade.
解析:选D 细节理解题。根据文章倒数第二段中的“But organizers say the events will raise awareness (意识) of the illegal ivory trade and increase support for ending it.”可知,销毁象牙的组织者认为销毁象牙的举动能够增加人们对非法象牙交易的意识,从而让更多的人反对非法象牙交易。
35.What can be used as the best title for the passage?

Unfortunately, we’ve all been victims of betrayal. Whether we’ve been stolen from, lied to, misled, or cheated on, there are different levels of losing trust. Sometimes people simply can’t trust anymore. __37__ It’s understandable, but if you’re willing to build trust in a relationship again, we have some steps you can take to get you there.

●You didn’t lose“everything”. Once trust is lost, what is left? Instead of looking at the situation from this hopeless angle, look at everything you still have and be thankful for all of the good in your life. __40__ Instead, it’s a healthy way to work through the experience to allow room for positive growth and forgiveness.

We were impressed with his works as well as his great determination to realise his dream.

Then he said, “Last Friday, my mother bought apples here for five dollars, too. Why did you give me fewer apples?”
“My boy, don’t you know? The fewer apples you get, the less fruit you will have to carry.” said the shopkeeper.
“All right,” said the boy and he kept one dollar and gave the rest of the money to the shopkeeper. He was just going to leave the shop when he heard the words. “Come back! You must pay me five dollars.” “That’s OK!” said the boy. “Don’t you know? The fewer dollars you get, the less money you will have to count.”

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

The airline pilot announced over the intercom (对讲机), “Folks, I’ve got good news and bad news for you. The bad news is ... we’re lost. The good news is ... we’re making great time!”
It’s too easy to live our lives like that, isn’t it? Making great time, but not sure if we’re heading in the right direction.
It’s been said, “Millions_expect_immortality_(不朽)_but_do_not_know
_what_to_do_with_themselves_on_a_rainy_Sunday_afternoon.” The problem is: They know they would like to achieve something important with their lives or to make a difference, but when it comes to making the journey towards those destinations (目的地), they feel stuck. In short, they are lost.
Author and speaker Danny Cox, in his book Seize The Day, tells of a man who made a great success of his life in spite of many hardships. He didn’t want to just sleepwalk through life, nor look back someday and feel regret. The moment that finally turned this man’s life around was when he sat down and asked himself four important questions:
·What do I really want?
·What will it cost?
·Am I willing to pay the price?
·When is the best time to start paying the price?
It occurs to me that one of these questions is the most difficult: What do I really want? We need to spend enough time deciding on the answer. But once we figure it out, the other questions will be easy.
Answer these four questions and we will get clear on the direction we want to take our life. Devote ourselves to these answers and we’ll make great time.

The new high speed railway line between Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang Uygur self-governing region, and Lanzhou, capital of Gansu Province, has cut train travel time by half to less than 12 hours.
The dramatic improvement will benefit many families planning reunions for Spring Festival.
“For the first time, I feel home is not that far away after all,” said Liang Shaofu as he boarded a high speed train in Urumqi with six members of his family.
The 35-year-old left Lanzhou to set up a dry fruit business in Xinjiang eight years ago, and he has now settled in Urumqi.
The 1,776 km line, which passes through Qinghai Province and is the country’s first high speed railway built in a high altitude region, came into service on Dec 26.
“We normally drive home for Spring Festival to avoid the difficulties of buying seven train tickets for the whole family during the peak season,” Liang said. “Driving can be very tiring and dangerous sometimes, so one year we even decided not to go back to Lanzhou simply to avoid the trip.”
More than 600,000 passengers traveled on the line during its first month, and the Urumqi Railway Bureau said the introduction of high speed services will ease transport pressure during the Spring Festival peak season.
The existing usual railway line could no longer support Xinjiang’s development. All passenger trains will gradually shift to the new link, leaving the old one to be used for goods. As a result, Xinjiang’s annual goods ability could reach 200 million metric tons from the current 70 million.
The line passes through areas that experience high winds, and it also crosses parts of the deserted Qinghai Tibet Plateau and the bone dry sands of the Gobi Desert.
The project could help China to promote its high speed railway technology abroad, said Ma Xizhang, director of the Lanzhou Xinjiang railway project’s management department in Xinjiang.

While vending machines (自动售货机) have a bad name generally, they are especially unpopular in schools. That’s because most of these machines are filled with foods that are considered unhealthy for both kids and adults. However, no one will have any objection to Jet Blue’s vending machines. That’s because they give out free books!
The US airline’s program was started in early July in Washington DC’s Anacostia neighborhood. It was picked because Jet Blue’s research pointed out that kids in the area could only get one age-appropriate (适合年龄的) book for every 830 children. To change the worrying situation, the company has fixed three vending machines in locations that are widely frequented by the locals — a Safeway grocery store, a Salvation Army and a neighborhood church.
The machines are filled with books for children aged between 0 and 14. A total of 42 titles are being offered, and the selection is rotated (循环) every two weeks. Kids can help themselves to as many books as they wish and return for more as many times as they want. And the best part? Unlike a library, the books are theirs to keep.
Jet Blue and its partners, Random House Children’s Books and Magic TreeHouse author Mary Pope Osborne, say they plan to give away 100,000 books. By this August, 16,000 books has been finished. The company now plans to extend its vending machine program to other poor neighborhoods in Detroit, Fort Lauderdale, Houston, Los Angeles and New York City, where most kids lack (缺少) appropriate books.
Though the book vending machines are new, this is not the first time that Jet Blue and its partners have given away books. Since 2011, the company’s Soar with Reading program has donated (捐赠) over$1,250,000 USD worth of books to kids in need!

As long as you have broadband (宽带) service in your home, you can turn on your desktop computer and connect to the Internet. If you have a wireless router, a device that spreads the broadband connection to other devices, you can set up a Wi-Fi network, which enables your cellphones and tablets go online too. And when you are outdoors where there is no Wi-Fi, such as in the park or at the beach, having 3G service allows you to stay connected.
It seems that lots of us have Internet coverage everywhere we go. So why have mobile companies around the world lately been so enthusiastic about a new term, “4G”?First, you need to know that the letter “G” stands for “generation”. Even if you have no idea what 4G is, at least you can figure out that it is a step up from 3G since it’s the latest generation of mobile Internet service.
Unlike broadband, mobile Internet uses the same signal towers that provide voice service to your cellphone, which means wherever you can make phone calls with your cellphone you also have an Internet connection.
But mobile connections have their defects:_they don’t carry as much information as broadband does, making opening websites and downloading music slower than they are on a Wi-Fi connection. This is why mobile connections have been constantly upgraded since the first generation was launched back in the 1980s.
According to BBC, 4G is five to seven times faster than current 3G network speeds, almost as fast as home broadband. Because of this, 4G is widely suited for services like video downloading, mapping, online shopping and even video conferencing.
To achieve the high speeds, network companies have to spend a lot of money on building new signal towers, which will eventually lead to a higher phone bill if you switch to 4G, and you will also have to get a new phone with 4G capacity.

参考范文:
Recently, I’ve carried out an investigation into what TV programmes the students in my class like to watch and the following is the result.
As many as 38% of the students enjoy watching TV series or films and 32% like entertainment programmes. However, the students who prefer latest news and cultural programmes only account for 5% and 15% separately. The remaining 10% like other programmes.
The result sets me thinking. As students, we’d better grasp every means to learn what is beneficial to our study. So, we should mainly treat TV as a learning tool instead of an entertainment tool.
