“Cleverness is a gift while kindness is a choice. Gifts are easy—they’re given after all. Choices can be hard.” —Jeff Bezos
I got the idea to start Amazon 16 years ago. I came across the fact that the Internet usage was growing at 2,300 percent per year. I’d never seen or heard of anything that grew that fast, and the idea of building an online bookstore with millions of titles was very exciting to me. I had just turned 30 years old, and I’d been married for a year. I told my wife MacKenzie that I wanted to quit my job and go to do this crazy thing that probably wouldn’t work since most start-ups don’t, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. MacKenzie told me I should go for it. As a young boy, I’d been a garage inventor. I’d always wanted to be an inventor, and she wanted me to follow my passion.
I was working at a financial firm in New York City with a bunch of very smart people, and I had a brilliant boss that I much admired. I went to my boss and told him I wanted to start a company selling books on the Internet. He took me on a long walk in Central Park, listened carefully to me, and finally said, “That sounds like a really good idea, but it would be an even better idea for someone who didn’t already have a good job.” That logic made some sense to me, and he convinced me to think about it for 48 hours before making a final decision. Seen in that light, it really was a difficult choice, but finally, I decided I had to give it a shot. I didn’t think I’d regret trying and failing. And I suspected I would always be haunted by a decision not to try at all.
After much consideration, I took the less safe path to follow my passion, and I’m proud of that choice. For all of us, in the end, we are our choices.

B. The idea of not trying would keep coming to his mind and disturb him.
C. He would be always having a doubt if he didn’t try.
D. The decision not to try the online bookstore would terrify him.
3. We can know from the passage that .
A. the boss thought the idea was suitable for the author
B. the author might not regret if he failed the idea
C. the author wanted someone else to try the idea
D. the author might go back to his boss if he failed

C. We Are What We Choose
D. Following My Passion

根据第三段“I decided I had to give it a shot. I didn’t think I’d regret trying and failing.”

Denmark is one of the happiest nations on earth with some of the best quality of life. You don’t need statistics to understand the Dane’s happy lot. Walk around any Danish town and you’ll experience some of the most harmonious civic spaces anywhere. Their intimate scales and perfect transport systems combine the rich history and bold modern lines of the built environment to delight the eye, and the locals’ manners and sense of humor is refreshing.
Denmark’s capital Copenhagen is a remarkable city with well-preserved medieval streets, renowned art galleries, Michelin-starred restaurants and a healthy business center. Finding something to do is never a problem and if all else fails, just admiring the streets with a hotdog in hand is an enjoyable way to spend a few hours.
Beyond the capital and the bigger cities, Denmark offers a mix of lively towns such as Ribe and Odense plus rural countryside, medieval churches, Renaissance castles and tidy 18th-century villages.
The coastline of Denmark with its sand dunes and greenery is a sight that always attracts visitors. So, no matter what time of year you’re in Denmark, you shouldn’t miss out on a trip to the nearest beach.
It’s hard, in short, to find fault with the place. The visitor’s most heartfelt complaint is usually the cost of visiting Denmark. True, it is not a cheap destination, but no more so than the UK, and which nation’s public transport system would you rather use?Cheer yourself up by thinking of the country’s remarkable organization and clockwork railway timetable as being financed by the extremely high taxes paid by your hosts. When viewed in this way, this first-rate destination seems like good value, and you get the fairy tales thrown in for free: the Danish royal family is genuinely loved and respected by the vast majority of its citizens, not least handsome Prince Frederik, his beautiful Australian-born princess-bride, Mar, and their young family.
5. Which of the following words can best describe Danes?
A. Polite and humorous.
B. Happy and romantic.
C. Kind and friendly.
D. Out-going and humorous.
6. The writer implies in the last two paragraphs that ________.
A. visiting the UK will cost less than travelling in Denmark
B. the transport system in the UK can’t equal that in Denmark
C. people in Denmark pay high taxes to welcome visitors
D. the Danish royal family plays an important role in politics
7. How does the passage mainly develop?
A. By providing examples.
B. By making comparisons.
C. By giving descriptions.
D. By following time order.
8. What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?
A. To introduce Danish culture.
B. To show the attractions of Denmark.
C. To share experiences of travelling in Denmark.
D. To describe the happy life people live in Denmark.
根据第一段“and the locals’ manners and sense of humor is refreshing”可推断丹麦人 的特点有礼貌、幽默,故选A。
根据第一段“Denmark is one of the happiest nations on earth ... and the locals’ manners and sense of humor is refreshing.”
Everyone wants to be happy, but not everyone can make it. Do you want to have a good mood every day? If so, the following steps will be useful to you.
Be grateful.
1 They can be simple things like the purple flower on the sidewalk, the beautiful sunset, and the hot shower you take every day. When you have a grateful heart, you’ll cherish them and be automatically filled with happiness.
 2
When you put your mind, heart and soul into what you’re doing, you’re-creating a happiness state — called the "flow". When you’re living in the flow, you’re less likely to mind what others may think about you, and less bothered by unimportant things. The result? More happiness, of course!
Become a problem solver.
Happy people are problem solvers. 3 Instead, they face up to the challenge and channel their energies into finding a creative solution. By becoming a problem solver, you’ll build up your self-confidence and your ability to accomplish whatever you determine to do.
Practice forgiveness.
Hatred and anger are forms of self-punishment. When you forgive, you’re actually practicing kindness to yourself. 4 Everyone makes mistakes. It’s through our mistakes that we learn and grow to become a bigger and better person.
Give back.
Doing good is one of the surest ways to feel good. According to Harvard, when people do good, their brains become active in the very same reward center that is stimulated(刺激) when they experience other rewards. 5
A. Go with the flow.
B. Focus on what you are doing.
C. And most importantly, learn to forgive yourself.
D. When they face a challenge in life, they don’t fall into a sad state.
E. When they meet with difficulties, they will solve them on their own.
F. So it’s not a surprise that people who care more about others are happier.
G. Slow down, look around, and pay attention to the little details in your life.
When you put your mind, heart and soul into what you’re doing, you’re-creating a happiness state"可知,当你全身心投入一件正在做的事的时候,你就会创造一种开心的状态。
Instead, they face up to the challenge and channel their energies into finding a creative solution"可知,此处所填内容应是与解决问题有关的,且要与后文构成 转折关系,故D项"当他们在生活中遇到挑战的时候,他们不会陷入悲伤的状态"符合语境。
According to Harvard, when people do good, their brains become active in the very same reward center that is stimulated (刺激) when they experience other rewards",再结合小标题"Give back" 可知,当人们做好事时,正是在同样的大脑的奖励中心,他们的大脑会变得活跃,就好像当他们经历其他奖 励时大脑所受的刺激一样,空后应该是得出的一个结论,并且与"给予"有关,故F项符合语境。

Dear Andrew,
Very happy to learn from you and you’re welcome to study in our school for the next two months. As for the question about the transportation to and from school, I’d like to recommend your riding a bicycle. Here are some reasons.
Firstly, riding a bike to and from school is very common among the students, for buying or repairing a bicycle doesn’t cost a lot. Next, parking a bicycle is easy and convenient in our school, no matter how busy the traffic could be. Actually, bicycle-riding is also a practical way to do exercise and protect the environment. What you should do carefully is just to keep an appropriate speed while riding and lock it after you’re off it.In this way, you’ll feel it simple and relaxing to ride a bicycle while you’re here.
Hopefully, what I’ve mentioned above could be helpful and wish you a fun time in our school.
Yours sincerely,
