There was a lovely vegetable patch (菜园). A large tree grew there. Both the patch and the tree gave the place a wonderful look, and they were the pride of the gardener. But no one know that the vegetables and the tree couldn’t stand (忍受) each other. The vegetables hated the tree’s shadow (阴影) , because it left them only just enough light to live. The tree, on the other hand, hated the vegetables because they drank nearly all the water, leaving him just enough to live.
The situation became so serious that the vegetables decided to use up all the water in the ground so that the tree would die. The tree answered back by not protecting the vegetables from the hot sun, so they began to dry up. Soon the vegetables were really weak, and the tree was drying up.
The gardener wondered why and stopped watering them. When he did that, both the tree and the vegetables realized that it was better to help each other. They learned how to live in harmony with those around them. So they decided to work together, using both the shade and the water to grow well. After seeing how well they were doing, the gardener gave the best care to the vegetable patch, watering and fertilizing (施肥) it better than any other patch for miles around.

Some teenagers think that newspapers are boring and only for adults. But that's not true. There are many interesting stories in the paper. You just need to make clear what you are looking at. “I spend about half an hour reading newspapers every day,” said 15-year-old Gao Ming from Beijing. “I'm interested in things happening at school.” School news is just one kind of news story in newspapers. There's also world news: from international problems to pop stars.

News stories — these stories are about events. Reporters try to show all points of a story to help readers understand what happened. Reporters try to speak to as many people as possible. When we read them, we learn more about the facts, not the writers’ ideas.
Opinion writing — opinion writing is usually about something happening right now. But it isn't just facts. Here writers add their own opinions to the news. Writers pick only the facts that help back up their ideas. They make readers believe that they are telling the truth. This is usually the kind of story that gets people thinking. Go to “Speak Out” on Page Two for an example of opinion writing in Teenagers.
Advertisement — Don’t get happy too early when you read them. Those sweet words and lovely pictures are just ways to get us interested in their products! People have to pay to put advertisements in newspapers!

People talk about the problems with diet and dieting, and use them as an excuse for ending, or for not beginning a weight-loss plan. The main problems are that most people don’t know how the body works or they are unwilling to change their lifestyles. When correctly solved you will find these problems will disappear and will finally be a part of your lifestyle.
One problem with diet and dieting is that people complain(抱怨) of often feeling hungry. In fact, slimming doesn’t mean eating less. It just means eating differently. You should eat more foods rich in fiber(纤维) instead of foods high in fat. It is possible to be slim without ever feeling hungry. Eating more nutrient-rich(营养丰富的) foods also means you feel less hungry because your body is getting what it needs.
Another difficulty is the desire(欲望). Most people complain that they cannot eat their favorite foods because of the weight-loss plans, which causes them to eat too much “bad” food. A slimming plan shouldn’t mean you can just eat “bad” food. While there are some foods that you should limit, there is no harm if you take small amounts now and then. Eating one chocolate bar once in a while is not going to end a healthy eating plan.21*cnjy*com
Time can be another problem. When you’re busy, it seems much easier to just have a snack than to prepare a well-balanced meal. Slimming doesn’t mean spending more time. It also helps you save money. Fill your fridge with some food that can be thrown into a bag and eaten anytime. Also, with a little pre-planning, large healthy meals can be made all at once, and then foods frozen and reheated(重新加热) when needed.
