Emily and Anne did know, of course. They had known about Charlotte's book for a long time. Jane Eyre was not the first book that Charlotte had sent to a publisher. Over a year ago she had written another book, The Professor, and sent it to one publisher after another. Each publisher had sent it back, in a packet addressed to Currer Bell. And then Charlotte had sent it, in the same old packet, to another publisher, and then another, and got it back again.
“Why didn't you change the paper on the packet, my dear?” I asked.
Charlotte smiled. “I didn't think of it, papa. The worst day was when we were in Manchester, going to the eye doctor. Do you remember? The packet came back then. That was the day before I started writing Jane Eyre.”
“Do you mean that you started writing Jane Eyre while I was lying in the dark room in Manchester?”
“That's right, papa.”
“But that's only six months ago, and here is the book in my hand!”
“Yes, papa. The book was printed a month later after I sent it to the publisher.”
“My dear! They decided very quickly that they liked it, then!”
“I think they did, papa. After all, it is a good book, isn't it?”
She smiled at me. I don't think I have ever seen her so happy. She is a very small person, Charlotte, and not a beautiful woman; but when she smiles like that, her face shines like a fine painting. My wife used to look like that sometimes when I first met her.
I took her hand in mine. “It is a very good book, my dear. I cannot tell you how proud I am.”
She touched my hand. “Thank you, papa. But you must not be proud of me alone. You know, another two of your daughters—Anne and Emily…”
“Oh no, Charlotte, please!” Emily said.
But Charlotte did not stop. “Anne and Emily have written good books too, and their books will soon be published as well! Let me introduce them to you, papa. These young ladies—Anne and Emily, are “not” your daughters—they are separately Acton Bell and Ellis Bell, brothers of the famous writer Currer Bell!”
Emily's face was bright red, but Anne and Charlotte started laughing. I was very surprised.
“All three of you!” I said. “But…but why do you use these strange names?”
“Because people are stupid, papa.” Anne said. “No one thinks women can write good books, so we have used men's names. And now they say that Currer Bell is a writer who understands women very well!” She laughed again.

Every boy wants to find treasure. And Tom was no different. One summer day Tom told Huck about his idea.
“Where can we look for treasure?” asked Huck.
“It's hidden on islands, under dead trees, but mostly under the floors in haunted(闹鬼的) houses.”
So, one Saturday afternoon Tom and his friend went to look for treasure at the haunted house on Cardiff Hill. It was a quiet and lonely place, which made the boys feel very frightened. They entered quietly, and explored downstairs. There were cobwebs everywhere and everything was old and broken. Then they threw their tools in a corner and walked upstairs, but there was nothing there. They were just about to go downstairs and start digging when Tom stopped.
“What is it?” whispered Huck, going white with fright.
“Keep quiet! There's someone downstairs.”
The boys lay down, looking through the holes in the wooden floor. There were two men downstairs. One was an old Spaniard in a wide sombrero hat and the other was dirty and unpleasant-looking.
Tom and Huck shook with fear when they heard the Spaniard speak because they found it was Indian Joe. He said:
“It's time for us to move, partner. What will we do with the $650 from the robbery(抢劫)?”
“Let's keep $30 each and leave the bag here.”
The dirty man went to the fireplace and moved a stone. Then he lifted out a bag full of money and took out some coins. The two boys forgot all their fears when they saw there was real treasure downstairs.

“What is it?” asked the other man.
“It's a box,” said Indian Joe. And he put in his hand and pulled out a handful of gold coins. The other man found the boys' tools, and they soon pulled out the box.
“There's thousands of dollars there,” said Indian Joe.
“The Murrell Gang used this area one summer,” said his partner.
“They must have hidden their money here.”
“What will we do with this, Joe? Will we bury(埋) it again?”
“No, someone might find it,” said Indian Joe.“Let's bury it in the number two den.”

The Diary of a Young Girl was written by a girl named Anne Frank. It is a true experience of a teenager in wartime (World War II, 1939—1945) and it has also become a symbol of the victory of the human spirit.
Here's one of Anne's diaries.
Friday, 10 September, 1943
Dear Kitty,
Every time I write to you something special seems to have happened, but they are more often unpleasant than pleasant things. However, now there is something_wonderful going on. Last Wednesday evening, 8 September, we sat around listening to the seven o'clock news and the first thing we heard was: “Here follows the best news of the whole war. Italy has capitulated(投降)!” Italy's unconditiona surrender(投降)! The Dutch programme

Now he has had to go into the hospital for a very unpleasant abdominal operation and will have to stay there for at least four weeks. You really ought to have seen how he said good-bye to us just as usual—he might have simply been going out to do a bit of shopping.
Yours,
Anne

Huw Thomas fell in love with Megan. But then an accident changed his life, and he had to move to Canada. Megan promised to write to him. But Huw never heard from her … until one day a letter arrived.
He saw the letter came from where he and his father had lived in their early years. Who was writing to him? He turned the envelop(信封) over in his hands several times. Then he took out the letter and read:
Dear Huw,
I don't know if this letter will reach you, and I don't really know why I'm writing to you after all these years, but …
Huw turned to the end of the letter and saw:
Best wishes
Megan
He couldn't believe it. He turned back to the first words of the letter and read:
… After all these years, but I've just found your letter to me from Canada. Believe me, this was the first time I'd read them and they made me cry, even after 50 years. I found them in a box of my father's papers. They were never opened.
Huw, I never knew that you'd written to me. I thought your new life in Canada had made you forget me. Now I realize that my father kept your letters. I can still remember asking him if there was any letter for me, and he always said, “__▲__, my girl. I told you he was no good.” Finally, after about a year, I believed him.
But why did he keep the letters? Do you think he wanted me to find them when it was too late? Anyways, he's dead now, so I can't ask him. All I can say is I'm sorry. Sorry for what my father did, sorry that you never heard from me and sorry for… everything.
I hope that at least this letter reaches you. Of course, I'll understand if you don't want to write back to me, but if you do. I am still Megan Jenkins, and I will live at the same address.
Best wishes,
Megan
Huw read the letter again. Everything with Megan came back to him. He had never forgotten her. He couldn't. Every day he looked at her face on the wall. He had a drawing of her. It had travelled everywhere with him. But to hear from her again …
“Are you all right, Dad?” asked Mike, coming into the room.

He looked at the gold and silver. “The world is tricked by appearances,” he said. “People often hide ordinary things with beautiful gold, silver, and jewels. Do you know any 9-year-olds who have started their own museums? When Theodore Roosevelt(罗斯福) was only nine, he and two of his cousins opened the “Roosevelt Museum of Natural History”. The museum was in Theodore's bedroom. It had a total of 12 specimens(标本). On display were a few seashells, some dead insects and some birds' nests. Young Roosevelt took great pride in his small museum.
Born in New York in 1858, Theodore Roosevelt was not always healthy. “I was a sickly, delicate boy,” he once wrote. Roosevelt had a health condition called asthma(哮喘). He often found it hard to breathe.Instead of playing, he observed(观察) nature and then read and wrote about it.
Roosevelt's interest in nature sometimes got him into trouble. Once, his mother found several dead mice in the icebox. She ordered him to throw them out. This wasindeed “a loss to science”, Roosevelt said later.
Because Roosevelt was often sickly as a boy, his body was small and weak. When he was about 12, his father urged him to improve his body. Roosevelt began working out in a gym. He didn't become strong quickly. But he did decide to face life's challenges with a strong spirit. That determination stayed with Roosevelt his whole life. And finally his body did get strong. As an adult, he was an active, healthy person. He enjoyed adventures and loved outdoors.

Have you ever seen a car without a driver? It sounds crazy, but these computer-driven driverless cars will soon be filling roads near you.Companies like Google and Tesla have been designing and testing these cars, and the technology is there.
So how? The cars have sensors(感应器) all around which can find other cars and objects in the road.Road signs are read by cameras, and satellite navigation systems(卫星导航系统) are used so the car knows how to get where you want to go. All you have to do is type in the address! Finally, a central computer system takes in all the information that it receives from the sensors and cameras and works out when to speed up, stop and turn.
Sound like your idea of heaven(天堂)? Sitting back, looking out of the windows and even watching a film or reading a book while ‘driving’ would be possible with this new technology. You wouldn't have to worry about remembering directions to where you're going. In addition, computers would also drive more safely than people—they would obey the rules and have quicker action times when in dangerous situations.
However, there are many drawbacks of driverless cars.Computers would have difficulties making ethical (道德的) decisions: If a child ran into the road, would the computer choose to hit the child or turn suddenly and potentially kill the car's passengers? Moreover, I personally find driving fun—I'd miss never driving a car myself. There would also be many other decisions to be made—should children, or drunk people, be allowed in a driverless car by themselves? Or would there need to be a person with a driving license in the car at all times?
I'm not certain I'd want a driverless car—but it's only a matter of time before they'll become more affordable and popular on our roads.
( )1.When using a driverless car, you need only ________.
A.read the road signs carefully
B.check the cameras
C.put the address into the computer
D.remember the directions
( )2.The third paragraph mainly tells us about the ________ of driverless cars.

B.They'll be less expensive.
C.They'll use less energy.
D.They'll run much faster.

The Silk Road is the name of different roads that long ago connected Europe, Africa and Asia. People reached these different places along these roads. Scientists believe people began to travel the Silk Road about 3,000 years ago. By the time the Chinese silk trade became important in the world, the Silk Road covered almost 6,500 kilometres. It spread from Rome to China, which is from the West to the Far East.
Traders travelling along the Silk Road carried silk, of course. They also carried and traded spices(香料), cloth, valuable stones and gold.
There is a famous old story along the old road. It is said that Roman soldiers(士兵) travelled through central Asia. They started to live somewhere near the ancient Chinese village of Liqian. Some of these Romans married local Chinese women and the story of blue-eyed villages of China was started.
During its busiest period, the Silk Road allowed people from many different cultures and countries to meet each other and mix. The Silk Road allowed the sharing of valuable goods and new ideas. These included people and trading goods from the Mediterranean, Persian, Magyar, Armenian, Bactrian, Indian and Chinese areas. All these peoples travelled the Silk Road, and they shared goods, stories, languages, and cultures.

Using iPads to Make Learning Fun
Paper, pencil, whiteboard, textbook are the tools you need if you want to go to school. But recently, you can add another one to the list: an iPad.
Because the popular Apple tablet is not only useful for searching the Internet and watching videos, but it is also being used to make learning fun.
Scientists now know that we learn better when we are enjoying ourselves, so recently software developers have made iPad applications(应用程序) that look like video games, but have strong educational content. One of the best examples of this new form of teaching application is Futaba, a game in which up to four children try to recognize a spinning(旋转的) object, and then identify what it is. The game can be used to teach English, math, foreign languages, or just about anything, and students love it. Teachers can even make their own questions. The important thing is that children enjoy the game, and don't even realize how much they are learning!
So the next time you have to choose between making your child study or letting them play a game, just remember…they could do both at the same time!

Can you remember a face quickly and never forget it? If so, then you could be a super recognizer.
Usually it is easy for someone to recognize the faces of their family members and friends. But it could be difficult for them to remember faces that they have only seen once. However, studies have found that super recognizers have amazing face recognition skills. They can remember at least 80 per cent of faces they have ever seen. According to the Daily Mail, at least one in 50 people are super recognizers.
A study was carried out in Bournemouth University of UK recently. Researchers tried to find whether super recognizers have a different way to remember faces. They found that when these people look at faces, they spend more time looking at the person's nose. They also found that these people are not smarter than others. Their super ability is restricted(有限的) only to face recognition.
Another important finding is that there are two subtypes(子类型) of super recognition. Some never forget faces. But for some, if you show pairs of faces to them at the same time, they can quickly decide whether the faces are of the same person or two different people. In fact, many super recognizers say they are very good at recognizing faces in a crowd.
These subtypes of super recognition could be applied to many areas of life. For example, the skills could be very useful at a passport control checkpoint. Super recognizers could also help police find known troublemakers and even missing people in the crowd.
