Growing JobsWhat sort of jobs will people be doing ten years from now According to① a survey published by an American university②, the ten fastest growing jobs will be related to③ computers and health. They include computer systems analysts④, data analysts and database⑤ managers. But there will also be a rise in⑥ the demand⑦ for health care professionals.
Of course there will be plenty of other new jobs, some of which we probably can’t even guess . But for those who love the outdoor life , a good bet could be the leisure industry. As more and more countries open up to tourism, more travel agents will be needed, but the real demand will be for guides to take groups and even individuals on adventure holidays. For people doing this job, common sense, physical fitness and an outgoingpersonality are likely to be more important than computer skills. some of which ... who love ... leisure/'le /n.休闲open up开发;开放open up to tourism开发旅游业As more and more ... individual/ IndI'vId u l/n.个人fitness/'fItn s/n.健康outgoing/ a t'ɡ I /adj.

Many independent Chinese women like to earn their own bread, even if their husbands are already bringing home the bacon. But a recent survey suggests that such women find more joy from relationships, rather than successful careers.
About 73 percent of the 7,000 women surveyed in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou said they would choose to work even if their husbands earned enough for the family. The survey also found that 77 percent define happiness as “enjoying a relationship”.
But striking a balance between career and family can bring challenges to the woman’s career advancement.
“In my company, women usually have an equal or even a higher starting salary than men,” said Li Hua, general manager of Beijing Chuangjiashe Book Circulation Company. “However, as they begin to climb up the career ladder, women often meet problems along the way, while men can climb the ladder more easily.”
Both physical and emotional differences can prevent some women from taking tough positions, Li said. But family life is often the main difficulty for Chinese career women.
Despite these challenges, however, some experts believe it’s reasonable for some women to want to be breadwinners.
“In this way, the roles of a family are decided by the parents’ abilities rather than their gender (性别),” said Gu Donghui, a sociology professor at Fudan University.
Gu says women should have the freedom to decide if they want to stay at home or work to support the family. “Everyone has a different interpretation (解释) of what it means to find self worth.”
Wang Haibin, an economic expert from Renmin University shares that view:“Traditionally, we tend to regard the family as the cell unit of society. Some members have always been expected to make sacrifices for it. But, it really doesn’t matter who earns more. Economic independence and personal choice are essential for both sexes in the family.”

A.many husbands can’t earn enough

2.What brings career women more joy and happiness according to the passage
A.Money. B.Relationships.
C.Challenges. D.Successful careers.
3.What’s the main problem that career women meet while working

4.Some women want to be breadwinners probably because ________.
A.their families are poor
B.they have a lot of children
C.they want to show their self worth

1.A.broke B.lacked
C.demanded D.misused
第3空后的the lack of ...
2.A.as much B.rather than
C.more than D.less than
more than表示非常令人满意,rather than表示“而不是”。
3.A.problem B.doubt
C.fact D.reality
4.A.Besides B.Otherwise
C.Still D.Instead
5.A.favorite B.headache
C.topic D.pride
解析:选A 从下文第四段“And I, like everyone else, truly loved his mother.”
6.A.ridiculous B.funny
C.polite D.tough
解析:选D 从下文“Tattoos (纹身) covered his arms and his loud and rough manner”可推断,这位老妇人的儿子高大强壮。
7.A.annoyed B.terrified
C.frustrated D.impressed
8.A.unreasonable B.unbelievable
C.unpredictable D.unbearable
9.A.suspected B.accused
C.warned D.reminded
10.A.confidence B.patience
C.fairness D.gentleness
11.A.patients B.nurses
C.doctors D.assistants
解析:选B 从下文13空后“tried to do the work of three nurses”可知,有三个护士生病请假了。
12.A.sleep B.trouble
C.meal D.cooking
13.A.busily B.willingly
C.slowly D.angrily
14.A.feared B.met
C.turned D.avoided
15.A.checked B.fed
C.comforted D.calmed
16.A.silence B.satisfaction
C.relaxation D.recreation
17.A.checking up B.keeping watch
C.picking up D.dropping in
解析:选A 前文有提示,作者以为这位儿子又来查岗,keep watch on sb.“一直监视某人”;pick up on“了解;注意到”;drop in on“顺便拜访”,均不合语境。
18.A.decorating B.carrying
C.holding D.covering
19.A.expensive B.cheapest
C.thinnest D.loveliest
20.A.long B.bad

A young man approached the foreman (工头) of a logging crew and asked for a job. “That depends,” replied the foreman. “Let’s see you fell this tree.” The young man stepped forward and skillfully felled a great tree. Impressed, the foreman exclaimed, “You can start from Monday.”
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday rolled by — and Thursday afternoon the foreman approached the young man and said, “You_can_pick_up_your_paycheck_on_the_
way_out_today.”
Startled, the young man replied, “I thought you paid on Friday.”
“Normally we do,” said the foreman. “But we’re letting you go today because you’ve fallen behind. Our daily felling charts show that you’ve dropped from first place on Monday to last place today.”
“But I’m a hard worker,” the young man objected. “I arrive first, leave last and even have worked through my coffee breaks!”
The foreman, sensing the young man’s integrity (耿直), thought for a minute and then asked, “Have you been sharpening your axe?”
The young man replied, “No sir, I’ve been working too hard to take time for that!”
Our lives are like that. We sometimes get so busy that we don’t take time to “sharpen the axe”. In today’s world, it seems that everyone is busier than ever but less happy than ever. Why is that Could it be that we have forgotten how to stay sharp
There’s nothing wrong with activity and hard work. But we shouldn’t get so busy that we neglect the truly important things in life. We all need time to relax, to think and meditate, to learn and grow. If we don’t take time to “sharpen the axe”, we will become dull and lose our effectiveness.

A.you’ll be fired
B.you’ll get a vacation
C.you can go home now
D.you can have a rest now
3.Why was the foreman unsatisfied with the young man
A.Because he wasn’t clever enough.
B.Because he didn’t sharpen his tool.

When he was 22, Rob Stewart traveled the world for four years. He wanted to call attention to the mistreatment of sharks. His 2007 film, Sharkwater, documents the cruel practice of removing sharks’ fins (鳍) for money and leaving the animals to die. In his latest documentary, Revolution, Stewart takes on an even bigger challenge: climate change.
The Canadian filmmaker says that climate change has harmed people and places everywhere: “It is stronger than any government or organization. If we educate people, they will make better decisions about protecting natural resources.”
According to a recent report on climate change, “The atmosphere and ocean have warmed, the amounts of snow and ice have reduced, and the sea levels have risen.” These developments are endangering crops, wildlife, fish, and even people.
Stewart says that the consequences of climate change will be irreversible unless people take action, especially young people. “It’s up to kids to be the moral compass (道德指南) of society,” he believes, “and say, ’Guys, this is not right.’”
Many kids took action after seeing Sharkwater. Elementary school students in the Northern Mariana Islands, for example, got their local government to ban the sale of shark fins.
Felix Finkbeiner, 17, of Germany is also part of the “revolution” to save the planet. In 2007, Felix started a youth group called Plant for the Planet, whose motto is “Stop Talking. Start Planting.” The group raises money to plant trees. So far, Plant for the Planet has planted nearly 200 trees around the world. “Future generations are the ones who will be suffering the most from inaction (无作为),” Felix says. His goal is to plant millions of additional trees.
“When we started four years ago,” Felix tells Stewart in Revolution, “we thought we had to save the polar bear. We thought we had to save the environment. But soon after, we found out that it’s about our future, that we have to save our own future.”

If you haven’t played games with an 80 year old couple, you’re missing out. Each week, my best friend and I hang out with senior citizens. Volunteering at a retirement village provides us with a great opportunity to meet new people and enrich the lives of the people we meet. We have learned so much from talking with senior citizens, and we are blessed to have this opportunity to reach out to those in our community. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing the faces of the elderly light up when we walk into the room.
Though my school only requires 10 community service hours, I have continued to volunteer throughout high school. While our 10 hour requirement is a good start, schools should require more volunteer hours. Volunteering offers students an irreplaceable way to help their communities and expand their knowledge of the world.
Some believe that forcing students to volunteer is defeating the purpose of volunteering, because it’s not volunteering if you are required to do it. However, sometimes students need an extra push to reach out to their communities. It’s because some students don’t know the benefits of volunteering. After they start volunteering, they’ll realize that volunteering can benefit them a lot and they will want to volunteer more.
Through volunteering, I’ve learned many valuable life skills. Besides teaching valuable life skills, volunteering may lead to a part time job opportunity as well. If students prove their reliability (可靠性) and hard work ethic while volunteering, employers may take that into consideration and offer them a job. My best friend got her summer job after volunteering several summers at the Boy Scout camp.
There are various other benefits of volunteering. Besides making a difference in people’s lives, students develop communication skills and acceptance of others. What’s more, reaching out to others who are less fortunate teaches us to be grateful for what we have.
All in all, volunteering is an extremely rewarding activity which should be required.

Tim Richter and his wife, Linda, had taught for over 30 years near Buffalo, New York — he in computers, she in special education.“Teaching means everything to us,”Tim would say. In April 1998, he learned he would need a heart operation. It was the kind of news that leads to some serious thinking about life’s purpose.
Not long after the surgery, Tim saw a brochure describing Imagination Library, a program started by Dolly Parton’s foundation (基金会) that mailed a book every month to children from birth to age five in the singer’s hometown of Sevier, Tennessee. “I thought, maybe Linda and I could do something like this when we retire,” Tim recalls. He placed the brochure on his desk, “as a reminder”.
Five years later, now retired and with that brochure still on the desk, Tim clicked on imaginationlibrary.com. The program had been opened up to partners who could take advantage of book and postage discounts.
The quality of the books was of great concern to the Richters. Rather than sign up online, they went to Dollywood for a look see.“We didn’t want to give the children rubbish,” says Linda. The books — reviewed each year by teachers, literacy specialists, and Dollywood board members — included classics such as Ezra Jack Keats’s The Snowy Day and newer books like Anna Dewdney’s Llama Llama series.
Satisfied, the couple set up the Richter Family Foundation and got to work. Since 2004, they have shipped more than 12,200 books to preschoolers in their area. Megan Williams, a mother of four, is more than appreciative:“This program introduces us to books I’ve never heard of.”

Career values in general are when you start working in the “real world”, what are the qualities that arethe most important to you personally in your career, and what long term features of your career do you value.
Values are the things that are the most important to us in our lives and careers. Our values are formed ina variety of ways through our life experiences, our feelings and our families. In the context of Career Planning, values generallyrefer tothe things we value in a career. For example, some people value job security (安全), money, structure and a regularschedule.Others value flexibility (灵活性), excitement, independence and variety.
Career values are things we feel very strongly about. For example, most of us will say that having enough money to live comfortably is important to us, but many are willing to work for less because what they value most is not money, it’s something else such as working for a specific (特定的) cause, helping people or having free time. Being aware of what we value in our lives is important because a career choice that is consistent withour core (核心) beliefs and values is more likely to be a lasting and positive choice.

The Human Traffic Signal①At 3,500 metres, La Paz, in Bolivia, is the highest capital in the world. Life is hard at high altitude, and the mountains make communications difficult. Many roads are in bad condition② and accidents are frequent③. One road in particular④, which goes north from La Paz⑤, is considered⑥ the most dangerous road in the world. On one side the mountains rise steeply; on the other side⑦ there is a sheer⑧ drop, which in places is hundreds of metres deep. Although there is not a lot of traffic, on average⑨, one vehicle comes off the road⑩ every two weeks . The drop is so great that anyone inside the vehicle is lucky to survive .
But thanks to one man, the death toll has fallen. Timoteo Apaza is a gentle 46 year old man who lives in a village near the most dangerous part of the road ,known locally as lacurvadeldiablo (the Devil’s Bend). Timoteo has an unusual job — he is a human traffic signal. Every morning he climbs up to the bend with a large circular board in his hand. The board is red on one side and green on the other. Timoteo stands on the bend and directs the traffic. When two vehicles approach from opposite directions they can’t see each other, but they can see Timoteo. Timoteo is a volunteer. No one asked him to do the job, and no one pays him for it. Sometimes drivers give him a tip, so that he has just enough money to live on. But often they just pass by, taking the human traffic signal for granted. thanks to幸亏,由于 toll/t l/n.(事故、疾病等的)伤亡人数 who ...the road为定语从句,修饰man。 (be) known as被称为a human traffic signal人体交通信号bend/bend/n. direct the traffic指挥交通,direct/dI’rekt/vt.指挥from opposite directions相对地;来自不同方向in the opposite direction朝相反的方向volunteer n.志愿者pay sb. for ... live on(人)靠……生活pass by经过taking ... take ...for granted以为……

So why does he do it Before he volunteered to direct the traffic, Timoteo had had lots of jobs. He had been a miner and a soldier. Then one day while he was working as a lorry driver he had a close encounter with death. He was driving a lorry load of bananas when he came off the road at a bend and fell three hundred metres down the mountain. Somehow he survived. He was in hospital for months. Then, a few years later, he was called out in the night to help pull people out of a bus which had crashed at lacurvadeldiablo. This last experience had a profoundeffect on Timoteo. He realised that he was lucky to be alive himself, and felt that it was his mission in life to help others. And so every morning, week in, week out, from dawn to dusk, Timoteo takes up his place on the bend and directs the traffic. encounter/In'ka nt /n.相遇;邂逅have an encounter with与……相遇sb. was doing ...when ... 这时……,此处when为并列连词,意为“and at that time”。somehow adv. 拉出来profound/pr ’fa nd/adj.(影响)深刻的;极大的have an effect on对…… He realised that ...and felt that ... week in, week out一周又一周from dawn to dusk从拂晓到黄昏from ...to ... take up站好位置以备……

“It’s up to kids to be the moral compass (道德指南) of society,” he believes, “and say, ‘Guys, this is not right.’”

The books — reviewed each year by teachers, literacy specialists, and Dollywood board members — included classics such as Ezra Jack Keats’s TheSnowyDay and newer books like Anna Dewdney’s LlamaLlama series.
Satisfied, the couple set up the Richter Family Foundation and got to work. Since 2004, they have shipped more than 12,200 books to preschoolers in their area. Megan Williams, a mother of four, is more than appreciative:“This program introduces us to books I’ve never heard of.”
The Richters spend about $400 a month sending books to 200 children. “Some people sit there and wait to die,” says Tim. “Others get as busy as they can in the time they have left.”
