Module 2 Highlights of My Senior Year Section Ⅰ Introduction & Reading-Pre-reading
The high school prom is the first formal social event for most American teenagers. It has also been a rite (仪式,典礼) of passage for young Americans for nearly a century.
The word “prom” was first used in the 1890s , referring to formal dances in which the guests of a party would display (展示) their fashions and dancing skills during the evening’s grand march. In the United States, parents and educators have come to regard the prom as an important lesson in social skills. Therefore, proms have been held every year in high schools for students to learn proper social behavior.
The first high school proms were held in the 1920s in America.By the 1930s, proms were common across the country. For many older Americans, the prom was a modest, home-grown affair in the school gymnasium.Prom-goers were well dressed but not fancily dressed up for the occasion: boys wore jackets and ties and girls wore their Sunday dresses.Couples danced to music provided by a local amateur band or a record player. After the 1960s,and especially since the 1980s, the high school prom in many areas has become a serious exercise in excessive (过度的) consumption, with boys renting expensive tuxedos (晚礼服) and girls wearing designer gowns (女式礼服). Stretch limousines (超长豪华轿车) were hired to drive the prom-goers to expensive restaurants or discos for an all-night celebration.
Whether simple or lavish (浪费的), proms have always been more or less frightening events for adolescents who worry about self-image and fitting in with their peers.Prom night can be a terrible experience for socially awkward teens or for those who do not date with others.Since the 1990s, alternative proms have been organized in some areas to meet the needs of particular students. For example, proms organized by and for homeless youth were reported. There were also “couple-free” proms to which all students are welcome.

Something else I’ve greatly enjoyed is working as a peermediator, someone who helps students to settle problems that they have with other students. At the start of the school year, we were given training in how to do this, and it’s clear that this kind of work can really help people.I think I’ll continue to work as a mediator when I go to college.
During the Easter vacation, I went on a short school skiing trip to the Rocky Mountains. I’ve been skiing quite a few times, but never with the school, and since two good friends came on the trip, we had great fun racing each other down the ski slopes. It’s well-known that Americans are competitive, and I did enjoy it whenever I won our races!

Other things I’m pleased about— getting good grades on my final exams, and receiving the senior prize for English Literature. I was given a car by my parents so I’ve been able to drive to school, which is brilliant. And of course, I’ll never forget beingelected to the student council. I really enjoyed meeting the teachers and telling them how we, the students, feel about things, and what we think should happen in the school!
All these things have been wonderful. But I have to say, the highlight of the year was the senior prom. For an American girl, it’s so important that you have a good time at the prom. Well, I did! Daniel, a boy in my English class, asked me to go to the prom with him, and I was so pleased — I’d been hoping he would ask me. I found a dress that suited me perfectly, and had my hair specially done on the day of the prom. It took two hours but it was worth it, as everyone told me I looked very elegant! A group of us rented a nice car to take us to the prom. The food was delicious and I ate so much that I had to stop dancing for a while! We shared a table with some good friends, and laughed and told jokes all evening. It’s a great pity that it’s probably the last time this will happen.

Daniel and I danced most of the dances together. But the big surprise of the evening waswhen I was elected prom queen! This was so unexpected, and I can’t tell you how good this made me feel! After the prom, a group of us drove down to the coast, and sat on the beach in our long dresses and dinner jackets. I shall never forget watching the sunrise over the sea — it was unforgettable! A
I was very excited on the first day of high school! I had P.E. for the first period. We hurriedly gathered in the locker room (衣帽间) when the headmaster began to speak, “Good morning, boys and girls! Welcome to the first day of the great new school year. We will begin with the pledge (誓言) of loyalty.”
I pulled my shirt over my head and my right hand immediately rested over my heart. A few tears came to my eyes as every time I pledged. I thought of my grandpa. He had died almost a year before, but I still missed him every day. Grandpa served in World War Ⅱ and the flag had a very special meaning for him.
The next morning in the locker room, I noticed something strange. Some girls talked through the pledge. In the morning after that, even fewer did the pledge, including the teachers. By the second week of school, I was the only girl in the whole locker room that did the pledge.
The next morning, I hid in the bathroom to change clothes and pledge. There I couldn’t see the flag and felt guilty to be hiding like that. I kept hiding for the next week and felt worse.
I spent a weekend gathering up my nerve. On Monday, I changed into my gym clothes right away and was standing by my locker when the headmaster began morning announcements. The pledge started and I put my hand over my heart.
A girl nearby locked her locker and asked, “Why are you doing that?” She looked confused.
“My grandpa fought in World War Ⅱ and he died last year,” I said. “I’m doing it for him.”
She felt embarrassed and looked away. “Oh,” she said.
Over the next few weeks, more girls questioned me about the pledge. I gave them all that same answer.
I never inspired other girls to do the pledge along with me. They made a choice; I made mine. I was doing it for Grandpa, but more than that, I was doing it for Grandpa raised me to be proud of my country and pride didn’t stop.

In America, after middle school comes high school, which includes grades 9 through 12. Students are required to take certain subjects like English, social studies, math, science, and physical education. In addition, they choose among elective subjects to complete their high school education. Electives include subjects in technology, music, art, and foreign languages.
Each student in the school has their own locker for books and personal items. This convenience saves students from carrying textbooks, and allows students a small space they can decorate with posters and favorite objects.
Most high schools have at least one sports team that competes in local events, and all students are encouraged to be involved in athletics. Schools often offer football, baseball and softball (垒球), basketball, volleyball, tennis, and soccer. Some may even have sports like golf, swimming, gymnastics and cross-country skiing.
Many high school students have part-time jobs by the age of 15 or 16, some even earlier. Their first jobs are often babysitting or cutting lawns, but later they will likely get a job at a fast-food restaurant, video store, or clothing shop.
Sixteen years old is legal driving age in most states, and students usually want to own a car as soon as they can. Some parents allow their children to drive a family vehicle, and may even buy a car as a graduation present. Others prefer that their sons and daughters earn enough to purchase a used vehicle. Regardless, many teenagers feel it’s a necessity to own a car, and will do whatever it takes to be able to drive.
Each school holds certain yearly (一年一次的) activities for the entire school body, such as homecoming, prom night, holiday celebrations, etc.
Homecoming is celebrated each fall, usually on a weekend, and events leading up to it may last all week. While homecoming is celebrated differently at each school, it usually includes a parade and the crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen, and ends with a football game and school dance.

A delightful-looking robot called MEDi, or Medicine and Engineering Designing Intelligence, is being used to help make doctors’ visits less painful.
The Alerta Children’s Hospital in Canada purchased four of the MEDi robots earlier this year. The bionic (能力超人的) friends hang out with children in the waiting room and also accompany them during different procedures, according to RxRobots, the group that created MEDi. The MEDi’s purpose is to help children cope with pain and reduce their stress. The robots have produced real results. According to a study done at the hospital, kids who interact with a MEDi robot reportedly experience 50 percent less pain during medical procedures than those who do not. “Parents told us that when they left the hospital, their children said almost nothing about the needle and told everyone about the robot,” Tanya Beran, founder and chief scientific officer at RxRobots, told CNBC of MEDi’s success at the children’s hospital.
The two-foot-tall robots can relieve patients’ anxiety by telling stories or playing games with the kids. MEDi robots are also programmed to speak several different languages, and are equipped with facial recognition capabilities (能力). The robots can interact with the children during various types of procedures like blood tests. Not only do the robots comfort the children, but they also make the kids more willing to work with medical staff.
“Our research shows that when children interact with MEDi robots, they are more cooperative in the procedure,” Beran said. “This means that the procedure is completed more quickly, resulting in greater health care efficiency (效率).” Beran said that MEDi robots are also a hit with parents. “Knowing that there is something out there that eases the stress, anxiety and sometimes traumatic (创伤的) experiences, is great,” Sheila Sousa, the mother of an 8-year-old patient said.

10.The underlined word “relieve” in Paragraph 3 probably means “________”.
A.cause B.reduce
C.increase D.remove
根据第二段的“The MEDi’s purpose ... reduce their stress.”

A.is bad-looking
B.is one foot tall
C.can recognize faces
D.can only speak English

Competitive sports?, for example, baseball, are probably the most popular of all the after-school activities. This is because?, for many American parents, it is important that their children , particularly boys, learn how to compete successfully. Young people are encouraged to take part in team sports such as football and basketball, since these games teach you to have the “winning spirit”. For some students and their parents, high school sport is considered more important than academic achievements.
During the long summer holidays, it is a custom for American children to spend several weeks at summer camps. There are thousands of camps, and they can be found all over the country. What these camps offer is an opportunity to take part in many different kinds of outdoor activities, for example, horse riding and water skiing. Older teenagers are more likely to get summer jobs or go camping with a group of friends. Many go backpacking in the mountains of the west.

Summer time is in full swing, which for many kids means being happily removed from the classroom strictness and the stress of daily homework. But as kids and parents enjoy their well-deserved break from school work, we can all take a more active role in ensuring their minds don’t simply melt away into a mess of video games, texting and social media. Summer is the perfect time to encourage children to read. A recent study, conducted by CommonSenseMedia, has found that the older kids get the less likely they are to read for pleasure.
There has been a drop in reading among all kids, especially adolecents over time. And reading for fun drops off dramatically as children grow. The study found that more than half of all nine-year-olds read daily for fun. But those numbers drop to just 27 percent among 13-year-olds and even lower for older teens. In 1984, 31 percent of 17-year-olds said they read every day for pleasure. But that number has dropped to disturbing 19 percent today.
It’s not just the kids who are reading less. Parents also read to their children less than ever. A recent survey shows this busier generation of parents read to their children just an average of 30 minutes per day — down from an average of 45 minutes per day in 1999.
In today’s world, there are more distractions for children, and reading doesn’t always stand high on that list. Part of the decline is surely due to the technology impact on children. But the digital revolution also means opportunity. There are more platforms than ever for children to read: from tablets (平板电脑) to e-Readers. In this brave new world, we must find more creative ways to engage our kids and ensure that we are raising a new generation of readers.

1.How time flies!
2.I’ve made friends with ...
3.I’ve made rapid/great progress (in ... )
4.We did ... in our spare time.
5.I took part in different/all kinds of after-school activities.

For many young people, having to attend school with a parent would be their worst nightmare. However, Senior 1 student Li Qinmei is happy taking her father with her as long as she can go to classes. He is disabled and unable to take care of himself.
The 16-year-old country girl in Zhucheng, Shandong Province has experienced one disaster after another in her short life. Li lost her mother at three. Four years later, her father became paralyzed after a tractor accident. At 12, her misfortune returned with the death of her grandma. Since then she has been forced to shoulder all the responsibility for her broken family.
Li learnt to cook and managed to live a life with an allowance of only 24 yuan per month. The most difficult thing she had to deal with was helping her father bathe, dress and use the toilet as he could hardly move. “I felt embarrassed, and so did my dad. It was really hard at the beginning,” she recalled.
During most of her junior school years, Li went to classes only once a month as her father was seriously ill at the time.
“I taught myself at home and asked teachers for help on my school days,” she explained.
Li’s hard work paid off this fall. She was admitted by Zhucheng No.1 High School, a local key school, based on her good performance in the entrance exams.
The school offered Li and her father a room on campus to live in so she could look after him during breaks.
Once in a while, Li felt sad when she saw her classmates going shopping or hanging_out with friends.
“I envy them sometimes because they have both mum and dad to look after them. However, I soon feel relieved as I still have my dad with me,” she taught her to be strong.
“I believe I will go on and continue my studies at a good university,” she said, in a confident tone.
Her teacher Mr. Wang has the same belief. Li made great progress in the recent monthly exams.“She works hard and is always eager to excel. It’s not easy for her never to be late for school, but she has managed to make it work,” Wang said.
1.Li Qinmei has to shoulder the family because ________.

I still remember the happiest moment of my life. I decided to hold a party for my Italian friends while living in Florence, Italy. My friends didn’t speak any English. And I vividly remember __1__ (try) to only speak Italian in __2__ party. And then, someone asked me to tell a joke.
I don’t know if you know this, __3__ telling jokes in __4__ language is one of the most painful experiences you can imagine.
I began the joke.“C’era una volta (Once upon a time) ...”
Halfway through the joke, I began to get nervous, so I suddenly forgot the Italian words. And 30 Italians were staring at me, __5__ (wait) for the joke to come to an end. At the last minute, I remembered and completed the joke. I waited for the sound of crickets ... But instead I experienced a __6__ (thunder) laugh and a round of applause. I made dozens of Italians laugh, in their country, in their language.
__7__ today, that memory continues to be one of the __8__ (happy) moments I’ve ever experienced. And it’s the reason __9__, over the last four years, I __10__ (study) languages and now I can speak five: English, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and German.
1.trying remember doing sth.
10.have been studying 根据时间状语“over the last four years”及语境可知这里应用现在完成进行时。

My Senior School Life
I have been studying in the senior high school for two years. In the past two years, I have learnt a lot. My field of vision is becoming wider, my knowledge is richer and my body is stronger.
I’m very busy at school. There are always a lot of things to do. To finish the learning tasks, I have to get up before seven o’clock, and go to bed at ten o’clock in the evening.
Sometimes I feel very tired and sleepy in class. But I never give up for I strongly believe the old saying: no pains, no gains.
Of course, there are also many interesting activities in our school. We can play basketball, listen to music and play games every day. These activities give us a lot of joy.
My school life is so colorful that I enjoy it very much.

A
I was very excited on the first day of high school! I had P.E. for the first period.

A recent study, conducted by Common Sense Media, has found that the older kids get the less likely they are to read for pleasure.
