Trees are useful to man in three important ways: they give him wood and other useful things, they give him cool places, and they help to stop drought (干旱) and flood.
Unluckily, in many parts of the world, man has not found that the third of these points is the most important. Man wants to make money from trees, so he has cut them down in large numbers, only to find that without them he has lost the best friends. And also, he is usually too careless to plant and look after new trees. So the forests slowly disappear.
This does not only mean that man will have fewer trees. The results are even worse; for where there are trees, the earth is stopped from being washed away easily; but where there are no trees, the rain falls on hard ground and runs away, causing floods and carrying away the rich top-soil. When all the top-soil is gone, nothing is left but useless desert.

A. they help him to make money B. they give him cool places
C. they give him wood and other things D. they help him to stop drought and floods

(One day Alice ran after a strange rabbit and came into a deep hole. She became smaller when she woke up the next day. She found herself in a wonderland with many amazing things inside.) The Caterpillar(毛毛虫) and Alice looked at each other for some time in silence. At last the Caterpillar took the pipe out of its mouth, and said to her in a tired, sleepy voice. “Who are YOU?” said the Caterpillar. This opening for a talk couldn’t make Alice at ease. Alice replied, rather shyly, “I — I hardly know, sir, just at present — at least I know who I was when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then.” “What do you mean by that?” said the Caterpillar, “Explain yourself!” “I can’t explain MYSELF. I’m afraid, sir.” said Alice, “because I’m not myself, you see.” “I don’t see.” said the Caterpillar. “I’m afraid I can’t put it more clearly.” Alice replied very politely, “For I can’t understand it myself. And being so many different sizes in a day is very puzzling(费解的).” “It isn’t.” said the Caterpillar. “Well, perhaps you haven’t found it so yet.” said Alice. “But when you have to turn into a chrysalis(蛹,茧) - you will some day, you know - and then after that into a butterfly, I think you’ll feel it a little stranger, won’t you?” “Not a bit.” said the Caterpillar. “Well, perhaps your feelings may be different.” said Alice. “All I know is, it would make ME feel very strange.” “You!” said the Caterpillar scornfully. “Who are YOU?” The question brought them back again to the beginning of the talk. Alice felt a little angry because the Caterpillar was making such VERY short sentences. She drew herself up and said very seriously, “I think you ought to tell me who YOU are first.” “Why?” said the Caterpillar. Here was another puzzling question. As Alice could not think out any good reason, and as the Caterpillar seemed to be very unpleasant, she turned away. “Come back!” the Caterpillar called after her. “I’ve something important to tell you!” This certainly gave Alice some hope. Alice turned and came back again. ( ) 48. Why did Alice think she was not herself?
A. Because she was too young to understand the changes.
B. Because being changed several times in a day made her feel puzzled.
C. Because she didn’t like her changes.
D. Because she didn’t feel very well.

I was in the lift in a market. There was an old man and about five or six people in front of me. People behind him were all in a hurry and saw him as a rock. The old man knew this clearly and tried hard to step aside.
I remember sometimes when walking or driving behind an older person, I was impatient and upset.
“I’m sorry. Please forgive me!” said the old man. “I don’t mean to hold you up.” He then tried his best to get out of the lift.
I suddenly saw this in a whole new light. I felt sick to my stomach. The old man was apologizing(道歉) to everyone, when we should have helped him to calm his fears.
One by one, people went around him quickly. By the time I got to him, I asked, “Sir, can I help you?”
The man thought for a while, and then said, “Well, yes, thank you.”
I placed my hand under his left arm and walked away from the rush of people quickly.
“So what are you shopping for, sir?”
“Oh, today is Mother’s Day. I want to buy something for my neighbour. She’s a single mother and she is always so nice to me,” he said, stopping suddenly as he looked for his pocket.
“Oh, they are here! I always carry them with me,” he said. Then he took out some business cards and handed me one which read:
“John Smith, friend to all… enemy (敌人) to no one! I said a prayer(祈祷) today and you were the answer. Thank you!”

五、任务型阅读:阅读短文,完成信息表(每格一词)(10分)
Many countries all over the world have National Parks. There are about 7, 000 National Parks around the world. Most of them protect natural settings and the plants and animals that live there, but a few are in towns and cities.
Are there National Parks in England?
There are nine National Parks in England. The first three were the Peak District, the Lake District and Dartmoor, which were all named as National Parks in 1951. Others followed afterwards, such as the North York Moors in 1952, the New Forest in 2005 and the South Downs in 2010.
Are National Parks in England the same as those in other countries?
Many National Parks around the world cover huge areas of land where nobody lives, but in England most of the countryside within them is useful for farming and other activities. As a result, National Parks in England include places where people live and work, as well as wild and beautiful areas where there is little sign or human life.
Why do visitors go to the National Parks?
There are plenty of activities to do in all of the National Parks in England. Visitors can walk or cycle, following marked route, and many of the parks organize activities for families.
Are there any problems in the National Parks?
There are about 110 million visitors to the parks every year, bringing many benefits to the areas but creating problems too. Many popular towns and villages can be swamped (充斥) by visitors. This results in overcrowded car parks and roads choked (堵塞) with traffic. Life can be difficult for people who live there, as more and more gift shops and cafes are opened instead of those everyday shops; in popular areas, house prices can become too high for local people making it hard for them to stay in the area.
Another major problem is litter. In the parks it is a particular (特别的) danger to animals. Broken glass can also cause fires by focusing the rays of the sun. When these start in wild places, they are much harder to control and can damage (毁坏) large areas very quickly. www-2-1-cnjy-com
How can people help?
All National Parks in England promote (倡导) the Countryside Code, which tells people how to take care of their environment. If these rules are followed, the National Parks will be protected and continue to give pleasure to many people for a long time.
