Theodor Seuss Geisel was born in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1904. He was famous because of the books he wrote for children. They combine funny words, pictures, and social opinions.
Dr. Seuss wrote his first book for children in 1937. It is called And to Think I Saw It on Mulberry Street. A number of publishers refused to publish it. They said it was too different. A friend finally published it. Soon other successful books followed. Over the years he wrote more than forty children’s books. They were fun to read. Yet his books sometimes dealt with serious subjects.
By the middle 1940s, Dr. Seuss had become one of the best loved and most successful writers of children’s books. He had a strong desire to help children. In 1954, the Life magazine published a report about school children who could not read. The report said many children’s books were not interesting. Dr. Seuss decided to write books that were interesting and easy to read.
In 1957, Dr. Seuss wrote The Cat in the Hat. He used less than 225 words to write the book. This was about the number of words a six-year-old should be able to read. The story is about a cat who tries to entertain two children on a rainy day while their mother is away from home. The cat is not like normal cats. It talks. The book was an immediate success. It was an interesting story and was easy to read. Children loved it. Their parents loved it, too. Today many adults say it is still one of the stories they like best.

Buffett is the son of the best investor (投资者) Warren Buffet, and he’s the CEO of a philanthropic foundation (慈善基金会). But he’s also a lifelong farmer. He is familiar with the saying that each farmer can expect to have 40 opportunities to improve their harvest. And it’s not just farmers who know there’s a clock running on their efforts. "We all need to recognize that we only have a fixed amount of time to affect change," said Howard G. Buffett (HGB).
HGB wants to invest more than $3 billion, in an effort to end global hunger and poverty for the world’s nearly one billion poor people by 2045. He’s decided to focus much of his effort on farming in the developing world. He believes that the best way to deal with poverty is to change the lives of farmers in the poorest nations on the planet."It’s a pretty well proven fact that nothing works better at bringing people out of poverty than investment in rural areas," said HGB.
Healthy soils are a most important part of productive farms, but 1.5 billion people — a fifth of the global population — live on poor land."You have to fix the soil, " he said. HGB also has the idea that farmers who own their own land will raise crops with an eye to the long-term health of the soil.
He would like to see that balanced with a foreign-aid plan. HGB notes that too often, experts want to make agriculture in developing nations look like farming in rich countries."It’s not going to happen like that, " said HGB."You need to consider local differences, local culture."Many more ideas of HGB can be found in his new book, Forty Chances: Finding Hope in a Hungry World.
5. From what HGB said in the first paragraph, we can know that___________.
A. we should improve the harvest as soon as possible
B. farmers have many chances to be rich
C. farmers only have fixed time to work
D. all of us know the importance of the time
6. What’s the population of the whole world?
A. 1.5 billion. B. One fifth billion.
C. 6 billion. D. 7.5 billion.
7. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. The farming methods in rich countries suit developing countries.
B. HGB thinks agriculture of the West is not good at all.
C. All the farming methods don’t suit developing countries.
D. HGB gains his ideas from the book Forty Chances.
