Analysis of the teaching material:
The passage is about how shadow puppet are made & played and a player’s hope to keep it alive. The middle part of the passage, which is about how to make and play shadow puppets, is a bit difficult for the Ss to understand, and the most difficult point is Ss can get to know the importance of traditional arts and skills and would like to help keep them alive. So I aim to have Ss discuss this topic and get the inspiration by themselves.
Analysis of the students:
The Ss are not so familiar with shadow puppet plays, not to mention how to make or play them, so it’s better to play a short video about them so that they can have a clear visual impression. Also, they may know it’s important for us to keep traditional arts and skills alive, but they may not be able to tell the reasons and suggestions, thus, group discussion may help them get more ideas from each other.
Teaching Aims:
1. Ss will be able to understand the following 5 new words with the help of video and pictures: audience, leather, object, movable, screen.
2.Ss will be able to understand the main idea of the whole passage and divide it into 3 main parts with the help of key words in 5m.
3.Ss will be able to list the steps of making and playing shadow puppets by reading Para 2 and 3 in 5m.
4.Ss will be able to tell the importance of keeping traditional arts and skills alive and give 2 to 4 pieces of advice by discussing in groups. Focus on: Reading comprehension, especially Part
2. Difficulty: the output of Ss’ oral practice
Teaching Aids: ppt, tape recording, 2 short videos
Teaching steps:
Step 1: Warming up and lead in

Play a short video of shadow puppet plays to arouse the Ss’ interest and give them a clear visual impression of what shadow puppet plays are.
2.
Ask Ss. to tell what they can know about shadow puppet plays from the video. When they have no more to tell, show them some pictures to help them know more, and introduce the new words at the same time.
Step 2: Reading Comprehension
1.Skimming: Ask Ss to read through the whole passage and divide it into 3 main parts with the given tips in 5 minutes. Check together and ask them for their reasons.
2.Scanning: Ask Ss to read the passage part by part. For Part 1 and Part
3, raise only 1 or 2 questions and Ss can answer quickly together. For Part 2, make a table and help Ss list the steps clearly. Ss check in pairs first and then in the whole class.
Step 3: Output

Another video: Play another video about the current condition of shadow puppet plays to help Ss know the problem shadow puppet plays are facing today. The video is a bit difficult, so play it twice and write down some new words on the blackboard to help Ss. better understand.

Group discussion: Ask Ss to talk in groups about whether we should help keep traditional arts and skills alive or not and how to. Give them 6 options to choose and the structure to follow. Homework: Finish the writing and retell the passage.
Feedback: There are 3 questions they raised:
1. Can the Ss tell what they learn about shadow puppet plays from Video 1
2. Is the second video necessary
3. The whole lesson seems no bone. I should try to use a line or change my linking words to link up the different steps together more clearly and raise Ss’ interest better. I think Question 3 is the key. I should have a line in my mind first and I can improve the linking words to better raise Ss’ interest and make the steps clearer. So Part 1, before playing the video, I can tell the Ss to focus on how to put on a shadow puppet play. Then ask them how to make shadow puppets so that they will more interested in the passage. And for the second video, I should also ask Ss to understand the main aim of the video first so that they can understand the feelings and have more things to say in Output. (共13张PPT)
