Unit 1 Living well
(Warming Up — Comprehending)
Warming Up is made up of two parts:discussing and talking. The purpose is to get students interested in the topic “disabilities”. The reading passage Marty’s Story presents a story that although Marty is a disabled boy, he never feels sorry for himself and he leads a good and busy life. This is the key part of this unit.
It is the fifth unit of the New Senior English For China Student’s Book 7. It mainly practices the ability of reading and writing of students. The book includes a large number of new words, which are difficult for my students to understand. Therefore, it is important for them to preview the new words and the reading parts. The English of my students is poor. So it is difficult for them to get the main idea of the reading.

Step 1 Warming up
With a partner, discuss what their disability might be.
Q1:What are disabilities?
Disabilities can be visible or invisible. People with invisible disabilities don’t look disabled. Depression, sleep disorders and learning difficulty are invisible disabilities. No matter what disability one has, life is not easy. They have many difficulties to overcome, but please keep in mind they can also live well, and even achieve great success.
Q2:Do you know of any famous people who are disabled? What do they do?
Ask them to answer the questions.

Marty seems to be a fairly positive person who considers he has a good life. He is realistic about his disability, but does not let this stop him doing as much as he can. He is a psychologically strong, independent boy.
2. What do you think is the most difficult thing that Marty has to deal with in his life?
Missing lots of school, not being able to run around and play sports like other boys at his age, people not understanding that he has a disability.
3. What kind of thing does Marty do in order to make his life happy and satisfying?
Marty keeps busy doing things that do not require physical strength, like computer programming. He has friends with whom he can go to movies and football matches and he has lots of pets. He also studies hard.
4. What can other people do to help Marty and others like him live a good life?
They can accept people with disabilities like Marty for who they are rather than focus on their disability. They can encourage them to live rich and full lives.

1. Let’s read Marty’s Story which is from the family village website. Then do the following exercises.

作表语
不定式作表语表示主语的职业、职责或性质等,从时间观念看表示将来含义。
注意:常用不定式作表语的主语有:

1. What is the purpose of the first paragraph of the letter.
In the first paragraph Alice tell Ms Sanders she is writing to make suggestions on the easy use of the cinema by disabled customers.
2. Why do you think the writer has numbered her suggestions and used italics?
This will attract the reader’s attention and the reader will realize these are important information.
3. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
In the last paragraph Alice asks the architect to consider her suggestions. If her suggestions are taken, many people will benefit and the cinema will be praised.
Part 5 Writing

1. 写作步骤:
建议信要写出写信的原因、建议的内容、提出建议的理由。提出的理由要入情入理,语气一定要礼貌当先。因此建议信要写得简明扼要、目的明确、具有合理性和说服力。具体写作步骤如下:
首段:表明写作意图。陈述事由,简单介绍自己,注意语气。
