第三部分:阅读理解(共15题, 每小题2分, 满分30分)

John had been on the road visiting clients for more than three weeks. He couldn't wait to get back to Ohio to see his wife and children. It was coming on Mother's Day, and he usually tried to make it "back home", but this year he was just too tired. He was in a small town just outside of Little Rock when he drove by a flower shop. He said to himself, "I know what I will do, I'll send Mom some roses."
He went into the small shop and saw a young man talking to the clerk. "How many roses can I get for six dollars, madam?" the boy asked. The clerk was trying to explain that roses were expensive. Maybe the young man would be happy with carnations.
"No. I have to have roses." He said, "My mom was sick so much last year and I didn't get to spend much time with her. I want to get something special. It has to be red roses, because that's her favorite." He was firm.
The clerk looked up at John and was just shaking her head. Something inside of John was touched by the boy's voice. He wanted to get those roses so badly. John had been blessed in his business, and he looked at the clerk and silently mouthed he would pay for the boy's roses.
The clerk looked at the young man and said, "OK, I will give you a dozen red roses for six dollars." The young man almost jumped into the air. He took the flowers and ran from the store. It was worth the extra thirty-five dollars just to see that kind of excitement.
John ordered his own flowers and had the clerk be sure that delivery would include a note telling his mother how much he loved her. As he drove away from the shop, he was feeling very good. He caught a light about two blocks from the shop. As he waited at the light, he saw the young boy walking down the sidewalk. He watched him cross the street and enter a park through two huge gates. Suddenly he realized it wasn't a park. It was a cemetery (公墓). He could see the young man turn there by gate and walk along the fence.
The light changed, and John slowly crossed the crossing. He pulled over and on an impulse (冲动之下) got out and began to follow the boy down the fence line. John was on the sidewalk, thirty or forty steps behind the boy, who walked inside the cemetery fence. The young man stopped by a small monument and went on his knees. He carefully laid the roses on the tomb and began to sob. John felt like an intruder but he couldn't leave. He stared at the little boy's trembling body and listened to his silent crying.
As he cried, he heard the young man speak, "Mommy, Oh Mommy, why didn't I tell you how much I love you? Why didn't I tell you one more time? Jesus, please, find my mommy. Tell my Mommy I love her."
John turned, tears in his eyes, and walked back to his car. He drove quickly to the flower shop and told her he would take the flowers personally. He wanted to be sure and tell his mother one more time just how much he loved her.

For some survivors of the Ebola virus disease, complete recovery is slow.
Doctors reporting Wednesday on a follow-up survey of the nine survivors who were treated for the Ebola virus in the U.S. say the survivors experienced a wide range of symptoms, involving many organ systems, for months after their successful treatment for the virus.
Dr. Tim Uyeki, an epidemiologist and one of the authors of the report, says it’s still unclear, in some cases, whether the long-lasting symptoms were caused by remaining traces of Ebola virus, were leftover damage from the infection or its treatment — or were caused by something else. But none of the nine survivors show any risk of spreading Ebola virus, he says.
The report was published as a letter in this week’s New England Journal of Medicine.
Over the decades, survivors of the Ebola virus have reported long-lasting symptoms that range from blurry(模糊的) vision and joint pain to depression and hearing loss.
Nancy Writebol told the Charlotte Observer last July, a year after she was diagnosed with Ebola, that she was still experiencing knee pain and hadn’t fully recovered her energy.
According to a Dallas Morning News story in March, Ebola survivor Nina Pham was experiencing body aches and liver problems, and was frightened by the unknown possible long-term effects of Ebola and experimental treatments used to save her life.
And in some survivors the virus clearly managed to hide in some parts of the body, even after they had otherwise recovered.
Dr. Ian Crozier, who contracted Ebola in Sierra Leone, almost went blind from Ebola virus that hid for a time deep inside his left eye, even after he was no longer contagious(传染性的) and the rest of his body had been cleared of the virus.
Earlier this year, Pauline Cafferkey, a Scottish nurse who had survived Ebola, had to be readmitted to a London hospital several months after her initial discharge(出院). Her new problem? Meningitis(脑膜炎) that doctors there linked to her Ebola infection. Cafferkey had made a full recovery from the meningitis and returned to Scotland according to a previous report.
Of the 11 patients treated in U.S. hospitals, nine survived. Since March, doctors with the CDC have checked in with eight of these survivors to see how they are doing, an average of five months after their discharge. The ninth survivor was still in the hospital at the time of the survey.

I have a particular lunch bag kept with me for maybe 14 years. But actually it belongs to my daughter, Molly.
Soon after she came of school age, she became an enthusiastic participant in packing lunches for herself, her brothers and me. Each bag got a share of sandwiches, apples, milk money and sometimes a note. One morning, Molly handed me two bags, one regular lunch sack(袋子) and the other one with paper clips(纸夹) on it.
?“Why two bags?”
“The other one is something else.”
“What’s in it?”
“Just some stuffs(东西). Please take it with you.” she replied and then I put both sacks into my briefcase, kissed the child and rushed off.
?At midday, after having my lunch from one bag, I opened the other one and shook out the contents. Two hair ribbons, three small stones, a plastic dinosaur, a tiny seashell, two animal crackers, a marble, a used lipstick, a small doll, two chocolate kisses and 13 pennies.
I thought they were useless, and then threw them into the wastebasket.
?That evening Molly came to stand beside me while I was reading the paper.
“Where’s my bag?”
“What bag?”
“You know the one I gave you this morning.”
“I left it at the office, why?”
“I forgot to put this note in it.” She handed over the note, “Besides, I want it back.”2·1·c·n·j·y
“Why?”
“Those are my things in the sack, Daddy, the ones I really like. I thought you might be very happy to play with them like me, but now I want them back. You didn’t lose the bag, did you, Daddy?” Tears welled up in her eyes.
“Oh, no. I just forgot to bring it home,” I lied, “Bring it tomorrow. Okay?”
As she hugged my neck with relief, I found the words on the note — “I love you, Daddy.” I felt moved as well as a little ashamed. I looked at the face of my child for a long time.
Molly had given me her treasures — all that a 7-year-old considered important. That was “Love” in a paper sack. But not only had I missed it, but also I had thrown it away because “there wasn’t anything in there I needed.”
The next morning, after kissing my girl, I hurried to my office. I picked up the wastebasket and poured the contents on my desk. I gently washed the mustard(芥末) off my girl’s treasures and spraying(喷洒) them with breath freshener to kill the smell of onions. And then put them into the bag again. The next evening, I returned it to Molly.
After dinner I asked her to tell me about the stuffs in the sack. Happy and excited, she placed the objects in a row on the dining room table and explained them to me one by one. I found that each of the objects had a story, a memory or was attached to dreams and friends that meant a lot to Molly. Since I was Molly’s beloved father, she was willing to share what she considered important with me.
Later, to my surprise, Molly gave the bag to me once again several days later. Same ratty bag. Same stuffs inside. I felt forgiven. And trusted. And loved. And a little more comfortable wearing the title of Father. Over several months, the bag went with me from time to time. And I have kept it with me until today.
65. What kind of girl was Molly?
A. Stubborn. (顽固的) B. Disturbing. C. Naughty. D. Considerate. (体贴的)

A. To give her father more food. B. To share stories with her father.

A. felt very sorry for what he had done B. didn’t find anything useful in the bag

A. It is a bag every family possesses for lunch.
B. It is a bag into which important things are put.
C. It is a bag of love his daughter shows for him.
D. It is a bag of sweet memories shared with her daughter.
69. What is the right order of the following statements?

第II 卷(共55分)
第一部分: 任务型阅读(共10小题,每小题1分,满分10分)
Criticism (批评) is everywhere in life. It is up to you to decide how to react to it. Learn how to deal with criticism and lead a happier and more relaxing life.【来源:21·世纪·教育·网】
Ask yourself how the criticism will affect you. Will you lose your job because of the criticism? Will you lose what is important to you because you are criticized? Will life stop existing if your opinions are not accepted? Surely not! So, don’t worry about it. Instead, remember that some criticism actually helps you make some improvements.
You absolutely cannot stop what people say. What you can do, however, is to change the way you react to criticism. If you let it upset you, then the blame is on you. You have the right to decide what to do with the criticism you receive.
Don’t be afraid to accept criticism. No one likes to be told that he is wrong. Yet, every single person has, at one time or another, been blamed for something. Realize that it’s normal. You may have received some strong criticism, but it doesn’t mean that you are foolish, or that you don’t have the ability to do something properly. If you are afraid to put your work out for others to see, you’ll never know if you are a capable person. Try not to think of it in that way and don’t take it seriously. If you can learn to be optimistic, you will remove some stress and nervousness about what people think, thus becoming happier.
Consider where the criticism comes from. It may help you step back and examine what causes the criticism. Is the critic just trying to offer constructive criticism? It is much easier to accept correction or guidance from someone that has good intentions. This type of criticism is known as valid criticism, because there is a valid point or reason to it. On the other hand, there are critics that offer their advice just to be negative. This is commonly referred to as invalid criticism because it is often not of any use at all.
Do your best. And if someone doesn’t like what you’ve done, so what? It’s either valid criticism or invalid criticism. But you have the power to decide how you will allow it to affect you.
Title: How to deal with criticism(批评)
The author’s opinion about criticism
Criticism is a (n) 71 part of life and it is up to you to decide your reaction to it.
Ways of dealing with criticism

2) Some criticism can help you 74 .
●Change the way you respond to criticism and try not to be 75 about it.
●Accept criticism 76 :
Receiving criticism doesn’t mean you are stupid or you are 77 to do things.
●Be optimistic about criticism and you will become less stressed or 78 .
●Think about the 79 for criticism:
It may be valid criticism or invalid criticism.

At one point along an open highway, I came to a crossroads with a traffic light. I was alone on the road by now, but 91 I drove up to the light, it turned red, and I braked to a halt. I look left, right, and behind me. Nothing. 92 a car, no suggestion of headlights, but there I sat, 93 (wait) the light to change, the only human being for at least a mile in any direction.
I started wondering 94 I refused to run the light. I was not afraid of 95 (catch) by the police, because there was obviously no cop anywhere around and 96 certainly would have been no danger in going 97 it. Much later that night, the 98 question of why I’d stopped for that light came 99 to me. I think I stopped because it’s part of a contract (合同) we all have with each other. Like most of us, I’m more ready to be stopped from doing something bad by the social agreement that disapproves of it than by any law against it.

Now in the countryside, many children are dropping out of school, which has raised concern nationally. There are several reasons accounting for this phenomenon, one of which is that school fees are too high for many poor families. They can hardly afford to send their children to school, even if they want to. What’s more, some parents are so short-sighted that they are eager to let their children help earn money for the family. Still, there are even some parents who hold the view that it is useless for girls to go to school. As a result, many girls have to stay at home and do housework instead of studying at school.
In my opinion/ As far as I am concerned, children will play an important part in the future of our country. The whole society, especially parents, should place emphasis on the education of children, whether boys or girls, and give them the right to be educated in school. Meanwhile, laws should be passed to ensure their rights.

M: What about coming to my place for a coffee, Mary?21*cnjy*com
W: I can’t, John. I’ve got a meeting at ten o’clock, so I have to go to my office now. Another time, maybe.

W: The dress I’m trying on is too small. Do you have a larger size?
M: Yes, but not in that color. We have a larger one in red. www-2-1-cnjy-com
W: Red? Red would be lovely.
M: Here you are.

M: Linda, could you hold this ladder? I need to get onto the roof.
W: Sure. Why are you doing that?
M: I want to clear the leaves off the roof.

M: Are you going to the exhibition in Sydney next week, Ellen?
W: Well, I was planning to, but I haven’t been able to reserve a hotel room.
M: Have you tried the Hillsboro Hotel? They might still have space. And it’s not too far from the exhibition hall.

W: Why on earth are we inside on such a beautiful day?
M: Well it was you who wanted to spend the day at a museum.
W: Shall we leave now and take a walk outside in the city square?

W: Hi, Don! So nice to see you.
M: Pam! Where have you been for the last three months? I never see you anymore.
W: Oh, I’ve been working strange hours these days. I don’t see much of anyone anymore.
M: Well, I understand. I wish I could stay and talk, but here comes my bus. Why don’t we go out sometime?
W: I’d like that. Call me soon.
M: Sure. Are you still living in the same apartment?
W: On Walker Avenue.
M: Okay. Take care!
W: Yeah, you too. Catch you later!

M: I’ll have to make a choice soon about next year. I’ve got a chance to go on a six-month journey to South America, but I’ve just been offered a job in a bookshop here.21·世纪*教育网
W: Wow, South America? How could you say no?
M: Well, believe it or not, I don’t have a burning desire to see the world. I’d much prefer just to stay at home. Anyway, it’s hard to decide.
W: Well, I would strongly advise you to think of the future. Working abroad is much more exciting than working in a small town. You’re lucky to have a choice. A lot of people don’t.

W: This is Word Master on Radio 4. Today we have professor Danny Sheffield from Arkansas Community College. Okay Danny, could you tell us how to produce a good piece of writing in college?
M: Well, one of the basic things about any writing is to remember three key points: number one, say what you’re going to say. So you’re telling the reader what you’re going to write about, and maybe also your opinion in the beginning part. The second thing is: say it. And here’s where you provide details and facts to support what you have stated. And the third part is: say it again. Conclude the main parts of your article and re-state the key points that you’ve made, and what you want your readers to understand.
W: Uh, what really separates an excellent article from the average ones?
M: I would say it’s a personal voice. Because people respond to such an article much more easily. So if you want to touch the reader’s feelings, your natural voice will help. That puts your writing more into the excellent type, rather than, “Oh, this is a good formal article.”

W: I can’t believe it’s almost summer.
M: Yeah, I know. The year went really fast.
W: What are you going to do this summer vacation?
M: I’m going to work for a company.
W: A company? What’s that? What do you do?
M: We help at parties. Our company prepares and serves the food. And usually, another company provides the music.
W: I didn’t know you could cook.
M: I don’t have to cook. I’m only an assistant.
W: When do you start?
M: Tomorrow. We’re helping a birthday party. Then, a big family get-together.
W: So, what exactly do you do?
M: Before the party starts, I help set everything up. You know, bring the food in and arrange the tables. Make sure it looks nice.
W: Sounds pretty easy.
M: That’s only the first part. During the party, I have to serve food and drinks to the guests.
W: Well, at least you get to meet people.
M: Yeah. And after the party is finished, I help clean up.
W: Yuck. I hate to wash dishes.
M: Oh, I don’t wash dishes. Someone else does. I just put everything in the trunk.
W: That’s not so bad. Sounds like a cool job.

W: Hello, everyone. Welcome back to the program. We all know plants need sunshine to grow. But actually, not all vegetables need lots of sunshine. Mark Hoffman and his wife own a guesthouse in Kempton, Illinois. They often serve their guests fresh vegetables from their garden. For almost ten years, the Hoffmans have been experimenting with shade plantings. Curious visitors often ask how they do it. Here is the answer: they grow tomatoes near the trees that produce a lot of shade. Tomato plants grow as long as they get five hours a day of direct sunshine, especially morning sun. This goes against the traditional advice that tomatoes need eight, even twelve hours a day of full sun. In fact, plants and tree roots can share something in common. Besides tomatoes, the Hoffmans grow Irish potatoes. Plants with wider leaves seem to do better in shady environments. The potatoes grow better in the shade than in full sun.
