Good leaders surround themselves with team members who are smarter than they are, experts say. They don’t let their ego(自尊) get in the way of choosing the best people for the job. And the same might be true of happy people, too. According to a new study published in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, happy people are less influenced by social comparison when deciding who to spend time with. Like good leaders, they aren’t deterred from being around people who might seem smarter than them, and they reap(获得) the benefits of good company.
In a series of studies, researchers invited Korean undergraduates to imagine they got a mediocre(中等的) score on a test. Next, they imagined receiving a text message from a friend, who either performed better on the test and had a happy disposition(性格), or performed worse and was generally unhappy. Participants then reported whether they wanted to hang out with that friend, and what their mood would be after spending time with them. The happy participants—those who scored highest on their general levels of happiness—were more interested in spending time with the happy yet “superior(优秀的)” friend, and expected to be more chipper (=happy and active)afterward. The unhappy participants showed no preference for either friend.
It seems like happy people aren’t troubled by seeming to do worse than friends, but could something else be going on The researchers conducted another study to tease out(深入挖掘出) the role of self-esteem(自尊), which could be the true influencer: Perhaps people high in self-esteem—who tend to be happy—don’t feel intimidated(受到威胁的) by their superiors, and that confidence is what actually protects us from unfavorable social comparison. Yet again, even after controlling for self-esteem, the results held: Happy people were more willing to socialize with happy-but-smarter friends, while unhappy people showed no preference. The participants this time were American, extending the findings to a second culture.
Underlying these studies is the notion(观念) that spending time with the happy friend is the better decision—a notion that might be difficult to hear if we ourselves are the unhappy friend, but one that research nonetheless(尽管如此) supports. Happy people, says the research, are more helpful, more generous, and more cooperative. They judge their friends more favorably and tend to be more sociable and attentive. For this reason, the researchers suggest that choosing to spend time around happy and high-performing companions is one of the ways that happy people stay happy. Of course, there’s another way of seeing the results: We can cultivate awareness of our natural preference for happy people, and deliberately make an effort to hang out with them, which could help us over the long fun.

To prevent the deserts coming near, China has planted billions of trees---to replace destroyed forests and as barriers against the sand. This isn’t a cure, though, say experts, as thirsty trees can make the problem worse by taking in groundwater.
“Planting trees is one way, but it isn’t that simple. It doesn’t solve the basic issue of water resources,” says Wu Bo, a professor. “We need to calculate how much water the trees will absorb, or else it could have a negative effect.”
Villagers in Zhengxin have taken on this challenge, with limited success. When the irrigation channels began to run dry, Lu Xianglin switched from wheat to cotton on his land. He also planted trees to protect his fields from sandstorms. He says he still gets good yields(产量)using flood irrigation (灌溉 ) and earns a good income for his family.
Other farmers haven’t stuck it out(坚持到底): about one in three have left Zhengxin in the past 10 years after their wheat crops died. Young people who can find jobs in the towns rarely return.
Last week, Mr Lu joined the other men in his village on a government-arranged trip to see the land that has been set aside for their relocation, nearly 40 miles to the south. The next day, he was back, shaking his head at the plan. The idea of uprooting his family troubles him, as does the idea of giving up the land that fed his forefathers. He prefers to stay and keep up the fight.
“With enough water, this problem can be solved,” Lu says. “We can plant trees and grass, and they will grow bigger. That will stop the desert.”
Experts say that farmers could switch to drip irrigation to lessen (减少) their water intake for growing crops. Elsewhere in the region, farmers have built brick greenhouses as part of a plan to grow vegetables using less water. Roadside signs call on farmers to “Save Water, Protect the Environment”.
54.The negative effect of planting trees in deserts is that __________.
A. it can make groundwater become less
B. it can prevent the sand moving freely
C. it can stop crops growing well
D. it can get the soil to become poor
55.Why did Mr. Lu NOT accept the idea of relocation
A. Because the plan of relocation will cost him much money.
B. Because his family had trouble moving away.
C. Because he was unwilling to give up his land.
D. Because he would rather stay than fight against the deserts.
56.What can we infer from the passage
A. The deserts drive more and more people to leave their homes for their lives.
B. People have no means to fight against the land becoming desert.
C. Water is the biggest barrier for people to stop the desert.
D. Planting trees cannot solve the problem of desertification of farmland.
57.What advice is given by experts to save water
A. To plant more trees. B. To build greenhouses.
C. To change crops. D. To use drip irrigation.

Just like children, baby animals spend countless hours at play. After studying animal play for many years, scientists recognize that young animal play is practice for adult behavior. Today this play is roughly divided into the following groups.
Locomotor play is to the movements animals carry out in their play. Running, leaping, turning, and kicking are some of the most common examples of locomotor play. An adult deer may run, leap, and twist(曲折前进) to escape its attackers. Play movements like these surely make young animals nimble. Someday these skills might help save their lives.
Moving forward slowly, attacking suddenly and biting are examples of predatory play that help young predators(食肉动物) prepare for a life of running after and taking hold of other animals. Wild cats, wolves, and bears are predators. It is very common to see these young animals play this kind of games which sharpen their skills and teach them about their strengths and limitations.
For children, playing with toys is both fun and educational. It helps improve their hand and eye movements as well as develop hand skills to accomplish tasks. It is the same with animals. Young chimpanzees improve their hand skills while playing with sticks. Birds also play with things in ways that teach. Swallows drop and recover feathers in mid air. Diving suddenly to catch the feathers is good practice for catching flying insects.
Social play helps animals learn how to behave when they run into other animals. And it teaches animals about communication. An animal gives signals to let another animal know it wants to play. Many animals give signals by showing a “ play face” . In some ways this face is like a human smile; the animal holds its mouth in a relaxed and open manner. During play-fights, some animals may step backwards to signal that they are playing and not acting seriously.
Until now, scientists have understood playful acts help prepare animals for their serious adult situations. But the numbers of playful species and examples of animal play are vast. The purpose of animal play may have meanings scientists have not discovered yet.
58.The main purpose of the text is to ______.
A. ask us to take good care of wild animals

M: OK, sounds like it will be no problem. I will speak to Lucy and let you know as soon as I can.
Text 10
M: Ms Green, the high tourist season in England is coming again. Could you tell us more about the tourism in England
W: Sure. In England, not only the rich but also the poor take holidays every year. During July and August most towns are empty. Factory holidays come mostly in the Period between mid-July and mid-August. State schools usually only have six weeks off, from about mid-July to the end of August.
The coast is the most popular place for the English people to spend their holidays. Food in British restaurants is reasonably cheap, but rooms are not. Few English people rent houses for their holidays, but one of the traditional ways of spending a summer holiday is in a boarding house. Some boarding house keepers provide all meals for their guests, but others provide breakfast only.
The British people may refuse to change the times at which they take their holidays, but they have shown themselves to be very ready to try new places. When they get home again, they always talk about how they spent their holidays
