第三部分:阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
请认真阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
Even before my father left us, my mother had to go back to work to support our family. Once I came out of the kitchen, complaining, “Mom, I can’t peel potatoes. I have only one hand.”
Mom never looked up from sewing. “You get yourself into that kitchen and peel those potatoes,” she told me. “And don’t ever use that as an excuse for anything again!”
In the second grade, our teacher lined up my class on the playground and had each of us race across the monkey bars, swinging from one high steel rod to the next. When it was my turn, I shook my head. Some kids behind me laughed, and I went home crying.
That night I told Mom about it. She hugged me, and I saw her “we’ll see about that” look. The next afternoon, she took me back to school. At the deserted playground, Mom looked carefully at the bars.
“Now, pull up with your right arm,” she advised. She stood by as I struggled to lift myself with my right hand until I could hook the bar with my other elbow. Day after day we practiced, and she praised me for every rung I reached. I’ll never forget the next time, crossing the rungs, I looked down at the kids who were standing with their mouths open.
One night, after a dance at my new junior high, I lay in bed sobbing. I could hear Mom come into my room. “Mom,” I said, weeping, “none of the boys would dance with me.”
For a long time, I didn’t hear anything. Then she said, “Oh, honey, someday you’ll be beating those boys off with a bat.” Her voice was faint. I peeked out from my covers to see tears running down her cheeks. Then I knew how much she suffered on my behalf. She had never let me see her tears.
56. Which of the following expressions can be used most suitably to describe Mom’s attitude when she made the child peel potatoes?
A. Cruel. ? ? ? ? ?B. Serious. ? ? ? ? ?C. Cold. D. Strict
57. What does the sentence “I saw her ‘we’ll see about that’ look” imply?
A. Mom believed every aim could be achieved if you stuck to it.
B. The race across monkey bars was not difficult enough for a child to give up.
C. Mom was determined to prove she herself was better than the teacher.
D. What the child had said brought Mom great attraction and curiosity.
58. When the child looked down at the kids, they were standing with their mouths open because _________.
A. they felt sorry for what they had done before
B. they were afraid the author might fall off and get hurt
C. they were astonished to find the author’s progress
D. they wanted to see what the author would do on the bars
59. The most probable conclusion we can draw after reading the passage is ______.
A. the last incident was sad enough to make Mom weep
B. the child’s experience reminded Mom of that of her own
C. Mom could solve any problem except the one in the last paragraph
D. in fact Mom suffered more in the process of the child’s growth ? ? ? ? ?
B
Do you know of anyone who uses the truth to deceive(欺骗)? When someone tells you something that is true, but leaves out important information that should be included, he can give you a false picture.
For example, someone might say, “I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery(彩票). It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars!”
This guy is a winner, right? Maybe, maybe not. We then discover that he bought $ 200 worth of tickets, and only one was a winner. He’s really a big loser!
He didn’t say anything that was false, but he left out important information on purpose. That’s called a half-truth. Half truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.
Some politicians often use this trick. Let’s say that during Governor Smith’s last term, her state lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she seeks another term. One of her opponents says, “During Governor Smith’s term, the state lost one million jobs!” That’s true. However, an honest statement would have been, “During Governor Smith’s term, the state had a net gain of two million jobs.’’
Advertisers will sometimes use half—truths. It’s against the law to make false statements so they try to mislead you with the truth. An advertisement might say, “Nine out of ten doctors advised their patients to take Yucky Pills to cure toothache. ”It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Company.
This kind of deception happens too often. It’s a sad fact of life: Lies are lies, and sometimes the truth can lie as well.
60. We may infer that the author believes people should ________.
A. buy lottery tickets if possible B. make use of half—truths
C. be careful about what they are told D. not trust the Yucky Company
61. How many examples does the writer give to show how the truth is used to deceive?
A. One B. Two C. Three D. Four
62. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. Using half truths is against the law.
B. Technically, half truths are in fact lies.
C. Yucky Pills is a very good medicine for toothache.
D. Governor Smith did a good job during her last term.
63. Which of the following best expresses the main idea of the passage?
A. He’s really a big loser!
B. Sometimes the truth can lie as well.
C. Advertisers will sometimes use half truths.
D. It’s against the law to make false statements.
C
Parents should stop blaming themselves because there' s not a lot they can do about it. I mean the teenager problem. Whatever you do or however you choose to deal with it, at certain times a wonderful, reasonable and helpful child will turn into a terrible animal.
I’ve seen friends deal with it in all kinds of different ways. One strict mother insisted that her son, right from a child, should stand up whenever anyone entered the room, open doors and shake hands like a gentleman. I saw him last week when 1 called round. Sprawling himself (懒散地躺) on the sofa in full length, he made no attempt to turn off the loud TV he was watching as I walked in, and his greeting was no more than a quick glance at me. His mother was ashamed. "I don' t know what to do with him these days," she said. "He' s forgotten all the manners we taught him.”
He hasn't forgotten them. He' s just decided that he' s not going to use them. She confessed (坦白) that she would like to come up behind him and throw him down from the sofa onto the floor.
Another good friend of mine let her two daughters climb all over the furniture, reach across the table, stare at me and say, "I don' t like your dress; it' s ugly. " One of the daughters has recently been driven out of school. The other has left home.
"Where did we go wrong?" her parents are now very sad. Probably nowhere much. At least, no more than the rest of that unfortunate race, parents.
64. The underlined word "it" in the second paragraph refers to ______
A. the change from good to bad that' s seen in a child
B. the way that parents often blame themselves
C. the opinion that a child has of his parents
D. the advice that parents want their children to follow
65. The boy on the sofa would most probably be described as _______
A. lazy B. quiet C. unusual D. rude
66. From the second example we can infer that the parents of the two daughters ______
A. pay no attention to them B. are too busy to look after them
C. have come to hate them D. feel helpless to do much about them
67. What is the author' s opinion about the sudden change in teenage children?
A. Parents have no choice but to try to accept it.
B. Parents should pay still more attention to the change.
C. Parents should work more closely with school teachers.
D. Parents are at fault for the change in their children.

Stress is an uncomfortable feeling in the mind from any situation or thought that makes you feel frustrated, angry, or anxious. Stress if often accompanied by physical symptoms, including twitching or trembling, muscle tension, headaches, sweating, dry mouth, difficulty swallowing, rapid or irregular heart rate, rapid breathing, fatigue(疲劳), loss of temper, sleeping difficulties and nightmares, decreased concentration.
Stress is a normal part of life. In small quantities, stress is good—it can motivate you and help you be more productive. However, too much stress, or a strong response to stress, is harmful. It can cause general poor health as well as specific physical problems or depression. Persistent and never-stopping stress often leads to anxiety and unhealthy behaviors like overeating and abuse of alcohol or drugs.
Certain drugs can lead to symptoms of stress due to side effects. Such drugs include caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, cocaine and diet pills. A poor diet, for example, low levels of vitamin B12, can also contribute to stress or anxiety. Performance stress is related to specific situations, like taking a test or making a presentation in public. Posttraumatic(创伤后的) stress develops after an unforgettably shocking event like war, physical attacks, or a natural disaster.
Any effective ways to deal with your stress or anxiety? One step is to make a list of what you think might be making you “stress out”: What do you worry about most? Is something constantly on your mind? Does anything in particular make you sad or depressed?
Then, find someone you believe in who will listen to you. Often, just talking to a friend or loved one is all that is needed to relieve anxiety. Most communities also have support groups and hotlines that can help. Social workers, psychologists, and other mental health professionals may be needed for therapy and medication.
Also, find healthy ways to deal with stress. For example, eat a well–balanced, healthy diet, don’t overeat, get enough sleep, exercise regularly, limit caffeine and alcohol. Don’t use nicotine, cocaine, or other recreational drugs. Learn and practice relaxation techniques like yoga and tai chi. Take breaks from work. Make sure to balance fun activities with your responsibilities. Spend time with people you enjoy. Find self-help books at your local library or bookstore.

Taking Part in School Activities
Nowadays students in Senior High School are occupied with their studies, so different students have different opinions on whether they should take part in school activities.
Many students are very interested in school activities; they have their reasons. Firstly, they think that learning from textbooks is not their only task. They believe that they should take every chance to get some practical knowledge. Secondly, they think that after long hours of study, they can relax themselves by taking part in school activities.
However, a large group of students take little interest in them and spend most of their time on studies. They believe that they should make full use of time to study. Besides, they feel that school activities have little to do with their further development.
In my opinion, I prefer the first view. On one hand, we can learn a great deal from other students we meet in activities. On the other hand, in modern society many qualities are required of young students, so only learning from textbooks is not enough.
