Steve Chou is popular with young people these days, but in his early days few people bought his records. Steve Chou lived alone in Canada and did little. One day, he passed by a local CD store and heard a song that greatly attracted him.
"My heart tells me that music is the thing I truly want to do, not for fame(名誉) or money," Chou said.
That's how we luckily have such a music genius, who has since then composed(作曲) lots of hits for the pop music charts(排行榜).
"Sometimes we need to get close to nature to look deeply into our souls and see what we really want to follow," he said.
Recently he has made public his latest work Lovers Genesis. In this album(集) he explores human relationships in the Internet age. "Technology itself is a good thing, but it depends on how you're going to use it," is Chou's advice to teenagers.
Chou often gets his music ideas from trips. He has traveled to many places around the world and believes that learning a country's language is the fastest way of experiencing the culture behind it.
Chou has worked hard on learning English to push forward his music career(事业). He has flown to the UK to attend months-long English training schools three times. There he lives with local families and practices daily conversations.
"So I could easily read the English instructions on recording machines and communicate with the local music producers," said Chou, "The music reviews of the US or British singers that I appreciate could help me learn and grow with them."

The Hawaiian people did not celebrate Christmas before the arrival of Captain Cook in 1778. It was, however, the protestant missionaries(传教士) from New England who first arrived in 1820 that first introduced Christmas to the Hawaiian people.
The missionaries reduced the Hawaiian language to written form, enabling the Hawaiian people to read and write in their own language. Many words for which there were no clear Hawaiian language equivalents(对应) were translated phonetically.
Let's look at some key phrases that you may hear in Hawaii during the Christmas and New Year's Day holiday season.
Mele Kalikimaka—Merry Christmas. The words "Mele Kalikimaka" are a phonetic translation. When the missionaries and other Westerners first brought the custom of Christmas to the islands, the Hawaiians had difficulty pronouncing "Merry Christmas" and turned it into words that rolled more easily off their tongues.
Hau'oli Makahiki Hou—Happy New Year. The western Christmas and New Year fell during this same time of the year when the Hawaiians traditionally honored the earth for giving them plenty to eat. This period of resting and feasting was called Makahiki(mahkahHEEkee). It lasted for 4 months, and no wars or conflicts were allowed during this time. Because makahiki also means "year", the Hawaiian phrase for "Happy New Year" became "Hau'oli(happy) Makahiki(year) Hou(new)".
Mele Kalikimaka me ka Hau'oli Makahiki Hou—Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Mahalo Nui Loa—Thank you very much. When you receive a nice gift or are treated to a special meal or beautiful song, you'll want to express your appreciation for the kindness.
90. What can we infer from the first two paragraphs?
A. The Hawaiian people had no written language before 1820.
B. Christmas celebration became popular in Hawaii in 1778.
C. Captain Cook had the greatest influence on the Hawaiian people.
D. The missionaries forced the Hawaiian people to change their language.
91. The underlined word "phonetically" in Paragraph 2 probably means " ?".
A. by meaning B. by sound C. by appearance D. by form
92. Makahiki is a traditional time for the Hawaiian people to ?.
A. celebrate the New Year B. show thanks to God
C. show thanks to the earth D. go for holidays
C
One of the latest trend(趋势) in American Childcare is Chinese au pairs. Au Pair in Stamford, Conn., for example, has got increasing numbers of request for Chinese au pairs from zero to around 4,000 since 2004. And that's true all across the country.
"I thought it would be useful for him to learn Chinese at an early age," Joseph Stocke, the managing director of a company, says of his 2-year-old son. "I would at least like to give him the chance to use the language in the future." After only six months of being cared by 25-year-old woman from China, the boy can already understand basic Chinese daily expressions, his dad says.
Li Drake, a Chinese native raising two children in Minnesota with an American husband, had another reason for looking for an au pair from China. She didn't want her children to "miss out on their roots". Because I am Chinese, my husband and I wanted the children to keep exposed to (接触) the language and culture," she says.
"Staying with a native speaker is better for children than simply sitting in a classroom," says Suzanne Flynn, a professor in language education of children. "But parents must understand that just one year with au pair is unlikely to produce wonders. Complete mastery demands continued learning until the age of 10 or 12."
The popularity of au pairs from China has been strengthened by the increasing numbers of American parents who want their children to learn Chinese. It is expected that American demand for au pairs will continue to rise in the next few years.
93. What does the term "au pair" in the text mean?
A. A mother raising her children on her own.
B. A child learning a foreign language at home.
C. A professor in language education of children.
D. A young foreign woman taking care of children.
94. Li Drake has her children study Chinese because she wants them ?.
A. to live in China some day
B. to speak the language at home
C. to catch up with other children
D. to learn about the Chinese culture
95. What can we infer from the text?
A. Learning Chinese is becoming popular in America.
B. Educated woman do better in looking after children.
C. Chinese au pairs need to improve their English skills.
D. Children can learn a foreign language well in six months.
D
The Americans and British use different greetings. In the USA the commonest greeting is "Hi". In Britain it is "Hello!" or "How are you?". "Hi!" is creeping into (不知不觉地进入) British, too. When they are introduced to someone, the Americans say, "Glad to know you." The British say, "How do you do?" or "Pleased to meet you." When Americans say "Good-bye", they nearly always add, "Have a good day," or "Have a good trip," etc. to friends and strangers alike. Britains are beginning to use "Have a good day."
The British usually use "have got" in the sense of "have". The Americans hardly ever do.
Am. E:
--- Do you have a car, room, etc.?
--- Yes, I do.
Br. E:
--- Have you got a car, room, etc.?
--- Yes, I have.
There are a number of differences between American English and British English in the spelling of words, for example, check (US) / cheque (UK); center (US) / centre (UK). Many American English words ending in "or" such as honor, vigor, labor are spelt in British English with an "our" like honour, vigour, labour. Many verbs in American English with "ize" or "izing" forms such as organize, realizing are spelt in British English with "ise" or "ising" like organise, realising. In American English, "practice" is used as both a verb and a noun. In British English, the verb is spelt "practise", and the noun "practice". And in the main, American English avoids the doubling up of consonants(辅音字母) in nouns and verbs while British English does not. In American English, for example, one writes "travel, traveled, traveling, traveler" while in British English one writes "travel, travelled, travelling, traveller".
It was once predicted(预测) that British English and American English would become separate languages finally. But the opposite has happened. The links between the two countries are so strong that linguistically(语言上), and probably culturally too, they are closer together than ever.
96. The Americans hardly say ?
A. Good-bye, have a good day! B. Glad to know you!
C. Hi! D. Have you got a car?
97. An Englishman writes ?.
A. cheque; center B. honor; organise
C. traveled; practice D. labour; traveller
98. What does the third paragraph talk about?
A. There are lots of differences in spelling between Am. E and Br. E.
B. Why the Americans and the British use different spellings.
C. There are few differences in spelling between Am. E and Br. E.
D. The different usages of words in Am. E and Br. E.
99. What is the passage mainly talking about?
A. British English and American English would become separate languages finally.
B. The differences between British English and American English in every way.
C. The differences between British English and American English in greetings and spellings.
D. British English and American English are closer together than ever.
