During Chinese National Day, Shelley and Ken, her colleague, and I left Hangzhou for Xitang, Zhejiang province. The scenery was so wonderful that I took many pictures along the way.
In Wenlin we had a ride in a pedal taxi from the new bus station to the old one to catch the bus to Xitang. What fun it was to ride in something I have only ever seen on the screen. We were soon on the Xitang bus. Driving through Xitang was an eye opener. It was very hilly, and the houses were all built in several stories up the hillside, attractive indeed and very different from the houses in Hangzhou, or elsewhere.
At the last stop we arrived and, with our luggage, started walking along a deserted road lined with 3-storey buildings. The ground floor shops were 99% empty. Imagine a street in China with no people around. Towards the end of the road we were greeted by three teenage girls, who gestured and spoke to us, directing us back the way we had come. Then we crossed the road to a large church building.
We were led into this building, where a young lady received us. She spoke English and after some conversation very kindly invited us to stay in the church. The local hotels were closed.
She took us on a wonderful tour, and on the way it was decided that we would take a ride on a fishing boat out to sea and around an island. We even saw the monument to the first part of mainland China the sun shone on January 1st, 2000. We went down to the harbour area where we had a delicious seafood meal at a seaside restaurant. We walked down to a fishing boat, climbed on board, and soon were heading to the sea. The setting sun afforded a wonderful photo opportunity of the cliffs and houses, shops and harbour of Xitang. When our trip was finished we went for a walk through the wonderful shops in the town. This is old China or at least the way I imagine old China to be.
All in all, it was a most happy and exciting experience. I will definitely be going back to visit these wonderful people in the near future.

The Age of Discovery
Have you ever wondered how some inventions have changed human history? Do you know the meaning of the “Age of Discovery”? What is the meaning of your city’s name? Do you sometimes ask yourself how some places got their names? Let us look at a brief story of the activities of the early European explorers who discovered America and other places.
The years between the 14th and 17th centuries are popularly called the Renaissance(文艺复兴)period. The word renaissance means reawakening(复兴)or rebirth. The Renaissance period was marked by a rebirth in learning. It began in Italy and quickly spread to other parts of Europe, such as England, Germany, France and Spain. The rebirth in learning was made possible by the invention of printing and other technologies. These facilitated(促进)the production of books and the spread of knowledge. This period was also the beginning of the Age of Discovery. Led by Portugal and Spain, exploration began to spread beyond the waters of the known world to discover new lands.
One of the main reasons for the increasing interest in sea travels was Europe’s desire to find a sea route to the countries of the Far Eastern countries, especially to India, at first by sailing around the continent of Africa. In their search for a new sea route to India, the Europeans discovered new lands they had never known existed before. One of the greatest accidental discoveries in history was Christopher Columbus’ discovery of America. He had set out hoping to discover a sea route to India. When he arrived in America in 1492 he thought he had reached Asia. Until his death Columbus truly believed that he had discovered India. Columbus’ mistake has lived on to present times as Native Americans are still called Indians, and the islands of the Caribbean are still called the West Indies. Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian explorer, later realized that what Columbus had discovered was actually a separate continent. Later, a German expert, Martin Waldseemuller published a map of the then known world. He named the new land America in honour of Amerigo Vespucci.

C. more babies were being born
D. many new things were invented
7. The Renaissance was made possible because _________.
A. people were eager to learn

A. Only Portugal and Spain went out to discover new places.
B. The Renaissance is the same as the Age of Discovery.
C. Columbus discovered Asia.
D. Portugal and Spain were leaders in the discovery of new lands.
9. The Europeans started sailing to faraway places because _________.
A. they wanted to sail around Africa
B. they wanted to look for a sea route to the Far East
C. there was no road between Europe and the Far East
D. they wanted to give European names to new places
10. Why did Christopher Columbus believe that he had arrived in India?
A. He saw many Indians.
B. It was an accidental discovery.
C. The American Indians told him it was India.
D. At the very beginning, he set out to discover a sea route to India.

My Goal
I have many goals. The most important one is to travel around the world, which I am trying my best to make it come true. The reason is that our world is so interesting. There are so many things to see, to try and to experience. While travelling, I can learn the languages of the countries I am visiting. What’s more, I can make friends with the people there. Travel will enrich my life, I think.
Of all the countries I want to visit, Egypt is the one I want to go to most. It is a mysterious country. Pyramids have attracted many people, and I hope that one day I can go and discover their secrets.
Of course, I understand that travel needs a lot of money and it takes time as well. The thing is that when I was a student, I had time but no money. Now that I am a teacher, I have money but no time. But that money is not enough for me to travel around the world. So I have to work hard and save money for it. I have dreamt that I will take the round-the-world trip with my husband after I retire.
At present, I have no idea when I can achieve my dream. But I am sure that I will try as hard as I can to do that.
1. travel around the world 2. enrich 3. Egypt 4. save money

A Trip to Shanghai Expo
Hello everyone! Welcome back to my blog after the long break. I returned from Shanghai last week.
On July 26th, Dad, Mum and I made a four-day trip to Shanghai Expo. The moment I set foot in the “Shanghai World Expo Park”, I was so amazed by its huge and grand hall. One each step something new and exciting always turned up.
I found that the park was so carefully planned, not only the construction but also the beautiful environment. While visiting, I was deeply attracted by the cute mascot of World Expo, HaiBao. According to the introduction, we chose HaiBao as the symbol of this Expo to raise people’s awareness of keeping a harmonious relationship with nature.
In my opinion, the trip is fantastic and unforgettable. I’d love to upload the pictures taken during the trip and share my valuable experiences with all the net friends. And I do hope you all like them. And my experiences at the China’s pavilion will be the subject of my next blog entry. Until then, goodbye and have a happy weekend.
