三、阅读理解30
Different countries have different customs in giving presents. In China, you must never give a clock to a Chinese person, because the sound of the word for “clock” is similar to the sound of “death”. Also, don’t wrap(用。。。包裹) a present in white, black, or blue paper, because they are the colours for funerals(葬礼). Don’t give a knife, because something sharp can cut a friendship.
In Russian, if you give flowers as presents, you have to give an odd number of them( One, Three, five, etc) because even numbers of flowers are for funerals.
In Germany if you are invited to dinner, flowers are good presents to take to your dinner hostess(女主人), but don’t take her red roses because it means you are in love with her. Don’t take thirteen of anything because it’s an unlucky number. Don’t take even number of anything, either. Don’t wrap your presents in white, brown or black paper.

The meaning of the word "volunteer" may be a little different in different countries, but it usually means "one who offers his or her services." There are many different ways in which people can volunteer, such as taking care of sick people, working in homes for homeless children, and picking up garbage(垃圾) from beaches and parks. Volunteers may work within their own countries or in other countries. They are often people with a strong wish to help those who are less fortunate than themselves. Volunteers don’t expect any kind of pay.
At the root of volunteering is the idea that one person may have the ability to offer services that can help other people. Tracy, a good friend of mine, however, recently came back from India with a new idea of what being a volunteer means. She worked for two and a half weeks in one of Mother Teresa’s homes in Calcutta(加尔各答). The following is her story.
"I first heard about Mother Teresa in my high school, we watched a video(录像) about her work in India and all over the world. I was so moved by her spirit to help others and her endless love for every human being that after I graduated from high school, I too wanted to try her kind of work. So with two friends I flew to Calcutta for a few weeks."
"I was asked to work in a home for sick people. I helped wash clothes and sheets, and pass out lunch. I also fed the people who were too weak to feed themselves and tried to cheer them up. I felt it was better to share with them than to think that I have helped them. To be honest, I don’t think I was helping very much. It was then that I realized that I had not really come to help, but to learn about and experience another culture that helped improve my own understanding of life and the world."
( ) 6. According to the text, a volunteer refers to a person who ______.

A. washing clothes and sheets B. passing out lunch
C. feeding the weak people D. taking a walk with them
( ) 10. What’s Tracy’s “new idea” in Paragraph 2 of being a volunteer/
A. Going abroad to help the sick. B. Working in Mother Teresa’s home.
C. Doing simple things to help the poor. D. Improving oneself through helping others.
In 1638, John Harvard donated some money and about four hundred books to a new university. This was the beginning of the library at Harvard University. The gift was so important that the university was named for John Harvard.
Thomas Bray began the first free lending library in the late 1600s. He set up more than 30 libraries in the American colonies. However, the idea for this kind of free library ended when Bray died in 1730. In 1731, Benjamin Franklin and some friends started the first subscription library in the United States. In a subscription library people pay money to become members, but they may borrow the books without paying again.
In the United States, every child had a free education. This idea soon led to free libraries. One of the first libraries that used tax money to buy books was a library in Peterborough, New Hampshire. This library was set up in 1833.

Who help you most in your everyday life, families, charities, or friends? Don’t forget about your neighbours! Neighbours help you more than anyone else in your daily life. So it is important to have good neighbours.
What does it take to be a good neighbour? Here is some advice.
Good fences (栅栏) make good neighbours. One of the most important things in being a good neighbour is to respect (尊重) a person’ s privacy (隐私). If you go rushing over as soon as new neighbours move in, they may think you are going to come over at all hours of the day, not respecting their privacy.
It is always a good idea to be friendly to everyone in the neighbourhood. This can not only put you on good terms (关系和睦) with them, but will also be a kind of protection for your family and home. If you wave as they drive by or offer a friendly hello while they are out to work, they will think you respect them. If you are friendly to them, they are much more likely to watch out for anything wrong going on around your home while you are out and let you know if anything happens. 21*cnjy*com
Another way of being a good neighbour is to be helpful in their hour of need. If you see that they are in need of a helping hand, it is good to offer your help. They will do the same if you are in trouble.
In a word, if you respect a person’s privacy, treat them kindly and be helpful when you see they are in need, you will be a great neighbour and anyone would be happy to have you next door!
1.__________ of how to be a good neighbour
Why are good neighbours important?
Because they can help you 2._________ in your daily life.

Be 4 _______ in their hour of need
Offer neighbours a helping hand when they are in need, and they will do the same when you have 5 ________.
Conclusion
Only if you are a good neighbour yourself you can have good neighbours.
