My wife, daughter, and I moved into our home nine years ago and we 36 a lot of time and energy in the yard to getting it looking like it does today. We 37 on a corner, higher than street level, and the entire side of the yard is 38 by a professionally built rock wall. We did the best to put what we had into 39 and called this area our “rock garden”. Whenever we had flowers or plants, my wife Denise or I would stick them out and plant them in the “rock garden”, just to bring some 40 to the area.
I still do all of my own yard work, even the 41 weed-pulling. After 42 my knee pads, I assume the 43 to clear the yard of weeds, even in the rock garden.

Weeks passed and 48 I made my way back to the mystery plant, it appeared to be a sunflower. It was 49 , looking with a tall thin stalk (茎) and only one head on it. I decided to 50 it and weed around it. As I 51 rocks from the area to get to the weeds, I noticed something 52 . The sunflower had not started where I saw the stalk begin. It actually had begun under a big rock and 53 under and around it to reach the sun.
That’s when I realized that if a tiny little sunflower didn’t let a big rock stand in its way of developing, we too have the 54 of doing the same thing. As long as we try, we can find ways to go under or around our big 55 in order to reach our desires.

How to Speak Brit: The Quintessential (典型) Guide to the King’s English, Cockney Slang, and Other Flummoxing British Phrases is the quintessential A to Z guide to British English—perfect for every bookworm looking to conquer the language barrier.
Oscar Wilde once said the Brits have “everything in common with America nowadays except, of course, language”.
Any visitor to Old Blighty can sympathize with Mr. Wilde. After all, even fluent English speakers can be at sixes and sevens when told to pick up the “dog and bone” or “head to the loo”, so they can “spend a penny”. Wherever did these unique expressions come from?
Part language guide, part cultural study,?How to Speak Brit?is the perfect addition to every Anglophile’s (亲英派的)library and an entertaining introduction that will charm the linguistic-minded people.

When you pull the headset over your eyes and the game begins, you are transported to a tiny room with white walls. Your task is to break out of the room, but you cannot use your hands, joystick or game pad. You must use your thoughts.
You turn toward a ball on the floor, and your brain sends a command to pick it up. With another thought, you send the ball crashing into a mirror, breaking the glass and revealing a few numbers scribbled on a wall. You mentally type those numbers into a large keypad by the door. And you are out.
Designed by Neurable, a small startup founded by Ramses Alcaide, an electrical engineer and neuroscientist (神经科学家), the game offers a way of selecting items in a virtual world with your thoughts.
Having a headset with virtual reality goggles (眼镜) and sensors (传感器) that can read your brain waves, it will be a few years before this device comes into the market. And it is limited in what it can do. But it works. I recently played the game, titled Awakening, when Alcaide and two Neurable employees passed through San Francisco, so did a few hundred others this month at the Siggraph computer graphics conference in Los Angeles.
Driven by recent investments from the US government, many startups and bigger companies are working on ways to mentally control machines, looking for smoother ways to use virtual reality technology.
“Neurotechnology has become cool,” said Ed Boyden, a professor at the MIT Media Lab who advises one of those startups.
At Neurable, Alcaide and his team are pushing the limits of EEG (脑电图) headsets. Although sensors can read electrical brain activity from outside the skull, it is very difficult to separate the signal from the noise. Using computer algorithms (算法) based on Alcaide’s research, Neurable works to read activity with a speed and accuracy that’s not usually possible.
The algorithms learn from your behavior. Before playing the game, you train them to recognize when you are focusing your attention on an object. A pulse of light bounces around the virtual room, and each time it hits a small colored ball in front of you, you think about the ball. At that moment, when you focus on the light and it stimulates your brain, the system reads the specific signals of your brain activity.
58. How can you break out of the room in the game?
A. Type the numbers you have got into the keypad in mind.
B. Open the door with the joystick.
C. Send a ball crashing into the door.
D. Use your hands to open the door.
59. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4 and Paragraph 5?
A. Many people in San Francisco have played this game except the author.
B. The US government didn’t invest money in the virtual reality technology.
C. The device having a headset with virtual reality goggle has come into market.
D. A lot of startups and companies are doing research into mentally control machines.
60. Which is the best title of the passage?
A. Sensors that read brain signals B. A game you can control with your mind
C. The limits of EEG headsets D. Recent investments on virtual reality technology
C
Scientists have exactly discovered the set of brain cells involved in making risky decisions, and have been able to control them in rats using targeted light. By changing the activity of the cells they were able to change the behaviour of risk-taking rats to avoid risk, hinting the approach could in future be used to treat people with impulse (冲动) control problems.
Risk-taking is a key part of survival, knowing when to take a chance could pay off—such as moving to a new area to look for food when pickings are slim.
While all animals need an element of risk, the preference towards it varies between individuals. Researchers found this variation, which determines how risk-averse an individual is, is regulated by brain cells in a region of the brain called the nucleus accumbens. This cluster of neurons releases the neurotransmitter dopamine, which regulates the brain’s reward and pleasure centres.
Previous studies have shown that in patients with Parkinson’s disease, taking medication which blocks specific dopamine receptors (DR2) (受体) leads to increased gambling (赌博) behaviour and risk taking behaviour. In studies with rats, researchers were able to use a technique called optogenetics (光遗传学)—which uses light sensitive proteins to change the activity of cells—to modify cells with DR2 in the nucleus accumbens.
Rats were trained to choose one of two levers, offering them a choice between a “safe” or “risky” choice. The safe option resulted in a small, but consistent amount of a sugar water treat. But the risky choice consistently delivered smaller amounts of sugar water, with the occasional large pay off—essentially encouraging the animals to gamble for a bigger prize. Around two-thirds of the animals weren’t keen on risk, opting for the safe option, but the remaining third were risk-seekers. Brain scans of the animals showed that those with low levels of DR2 consistently went for the gamble.
But using pulses of light to stimulate (刺激) the DR2 cells and improve their activity could cause the risk-takers to play it safe and opt for the guaranteed but less rewarding option. Once the light-pulses stopped, the risk-takers returned to their gambling strategy.
In the risk-averse animals, stimulating the same cells had little to no effect.
Professor Karl Deisseroth, of Stanford University in California, said: “Humans and rats have similar brain structures involved.”And we found a drug known to increase risk preference in people had the same effect on the rats. So every indication is that these findings are relevant to humans. “Risky behavior has its moments where it’s valuable. As a species, we wouldn’t have come as far as we have without it.”
61.The variation in people’s preference towards risks is directly regulated by ________.
A. nucleus accumbens B. light sensitive proteins C.dopamine D. neurons
62.From the experiment with rats, we can conclude that ________.
A. the lack of DR2 cells results in a safe option
B. the high levels of DR2 can make animals avoid risks
C. the levels of DR2 have little to do with their choices
D. the risky choice is a less rewarding option
63.The underlined words in Paragraph 7 most likely mean the animals that are ________.
A. reluctant to take risks B. willing to take big risks
C. fond of gambling strategy D. afraid of receiving stimulation
64.What can be inferred from what Professor Karl Deisseroth said?
A. Humans and rats differ in their preference for risk-taking.
B. Too much risk-taking can do more harm than good.
C. Risk-taking can be used to treat people with impulse control problems.
D. Risk-taking is a means of survival and brings higher returns to humans.

Dear Scott:
I think you have every kind of right to be proud of this book---The Great Gatsby(了不起的盖茨比).It is an extraordinary book, suggestive of all sorts of thoughts and moods. You adopted exactly the right method of telling it,that of employing a narrator who is more of a spectator(旁观者)than an actor:this puts the reader upon a point of observation on a higher level than that on which the characters stand and at a distance that gives perspective.
I could go on praising the book, but points of criticism are more important now.I think you are right in feeling some looseness in chapters six and seven, and I don't know how to suggest a remedy.I hardly doubt that you will find one and I am only writing to say that I think it does need something to hold up here to the pace set,and following.I have only two actual criticisms:
One is that among a set of characters marvelously vivid and vital-I would know Tom Buchanan if I met him on the street and would avoid him-Gatsby is somewhat vague. The reader's eyes can never quite focus upon him,his outlines are dim. This may be somewhat of an artistic intention, but I think it is mistaken.Couldn't he be physically described as distinctly as the others, and couldn't you add one or two characteristics like the use of that phrase"old sport"-not verbal, but physical ones, perhaps.I think that for some reason or other a reader gets an idea that Gatsby is a much older man than he is.But this would be avoided if on his first appearance he was seen as vividly as Daisy and Tom are,for instance-and I do not think your scheme would be weakened if you made him so.
The other point is also about Gatsby:his career must remain mysterious,of course. But in the end you make it pretty clear that his wealth came through his connection with Wolfsheim. Now almost all readers are going to be puzzled by his having all this wealth and demand an explanation. To give a distinct and definite one would be,of course, completely absurd. It did occur to me,though, that you might here and there insert some phrases, and possibly incidents that would suggest that he was in some active way mysteriously engaged. You do have him called on the telephone, but couldn't he be seen once or twice consulting at his parties with people of some sort of mysterious significance, from the political, the gambling, the sporting world,or whatever it may be.If some sort of business activity of his were simply suggested,it would lend further probability to that part of the story.
There is one other point:in giving deliberately Gatsby's biography, when he gives it to the narrator, you do withdraw from the method of the narrative in some degree, for otherwise almost everything is told, and beautifully told,in the regular flow of it.But you can't avoid the biography altogether.I thought you might find ways to let the truth of some of his claims like his army career come out,bit by bit,in the course of actual narrative.
The general brilliant quality of the book makes me ashamed to make even these criticisms. The amount of meaning you get into a sentence, the dimensions and intensity of the impression you make a paragraph carry, are most extraordinary. It seems,in reading,a much shorter book than it is,but it carries the mind through a series of experiences that one would think would require a book of three times its length.
You once told me you were not a natural writer-my God!You have plainly mastered the craft,of course; but you needed far more than craftsmanship for this.
As ever,--Maxwell E.Perkins

We've been hearing feedback from our customers about the way we handle performance for iPhones with older batteries and how we have communicated that process. We know that some of you feel Apple has let you down. We apologize. There's been a lot of misunderstanding about this issue, so we would like to clarify and let you know about some changes we're making.
First and foremost, we have never—and would never—do anything to intentionally shorten the life of any Apple product, or degrade the user experience to drive customer upgrades. Our goal has always been to create products that our customers love, and making iPhones last as long as possible is an important part of that.
All rechargeable batteries are consumable components that become less effective as their ability to hold a charge reduces. Time and the number of times a battery has been charged are not the only factors in this chemical aging process.
Device use also affects the performance of a battery over its lifespan. For example, leaving or charging a battery in a hot environment can cause a battery to age faster.
A chemically aged battery becomes less capable of delivering peak energy loads, especially in a low state of charge, which may lead to a device unexpectedly shutting itself down in some situations.
It should go without saying that we think sudden, unexpected shutdowns are unacceptable. We don't want any of our users to lose a call, miss taking a picture or have any other part of their iPhone experience interrupted if we can avoid it.
About a year ago in iOS 10.2.1, we delivered a software update that improves power management during peak workloads to avoid unexpected shutdowns on iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, and iPhone SE. With the update, iOS dynamically manages the maximum performance of some system components when needed to prevent a shutdown. While these changes may go unnoticed, in some cases users may experience longer launch times for apps and other reductions in performance.
Of course, when a chemically aged battery is replaced with a new one, iPhone performance returns to normal when operated in standard conditions.
To address our customers' concerns, to recognize their loyalty and to regain the trust of anyone who may have doubted Apple's intentions, we've decided to take the following steps:
Apple is reducing the price of an out-of-warranty iPhone battery replacement by $50—from $79 to $29—for anyone with an iPhone 6 or later whose battery needs to be replaced, starting in late January and available worldwide through December 2018.
Early in 2018, we will issue an iOS software update with new features that give users more visibility into the health of their iPhone's battery, so they can see for themselves if its condition is affecting performance.
At Apple, our customers' trust means everything to us. We will never stop working to earn and maintain it. We are able to do the work we love only because of your faith and support—and we will never forget that or take it for granted.

According to China Radio International, Chinese people had more than 30 billion goods sent through delivery services per year as online service is developing at a fast rate. Such a big market has led to a large demand for delivery workers, with some companies offering high salaries to attract new workers. It is not uncommon to see delivery workers riding electric bikes, motorcycles and trucks through big cities in China. Most of them seem to be in a hurry, as they run red lights to deliver their goods in time. Such behavior often causes serious problems.
In the first half of this year, food delivery drivers alone had 76 accidents in Shanghai, according to the Shanghai Public Security Bureau. This means that on average, there is a food delivery worker that gets hurt on the road in Shanghai every 2.5 days. On Nov. 2lst, a truck loaded with goods caught fire and was burnt to ashes, destroying over one thousand commodities(货品).

Besides, delivery workers are supposed to obey traffic rules, or they will be banned from driving delivery vehicles.(120words)
