“Mind over matter” is an English saying meaning that we can control our bodies with our minds. Now scientists are finding increasing evidence that our mind can have a great effect on our physical health. Since our mind influences how we feel, it’s not true to say if someone is ill just because he feels ill.
The influence of the mind on how well we feel is the basis of what is known as the placebo effect. A placebo (which is Latin for “I shall please”) is a harmless, inactive substance. Patients are sometimes given placebo pills and begin to feel better because they believe that they have been given real drugs and expect to respond to them. The placebo effect is very strong: research on pain suggests that up to 30% of the effect of most painkillers is a placebo effect.
So if it is so powerful, why don’t doctors use it today?
According to Dr Persaud, they really do. “All these things like seeing a doctor, going to a hospital, and being scanned(扫描) have a very strong placebo effect,” he says.
59. According to the first paragraph, if you feel ill________.
A. you don’t need to see a doctor
B. it doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re physically ill
C. you are in good condition
D. it is obvious that you suffer from a serious disease
60. The English saying “mind over matter” means that _________.
A. a sound mind is less important than a good health
B. our mind has a strong effect on our body
C. our physical health has nothing to do with our mind
D. mental health mainly depends on our physical health
61. According to the passage, placebos__________ .
A. may make patients feel worse B. are not effective pills
C. are not real drugs D. can relieve all kinds of pains
62.From the passage it can be seen that there will be no placebo effect if a patient .
A. is dressed in white B. has a physical exam
C. takes placebo pills D. sees a doctor

When you grow up, could you imagine your parents choosing your husband or wife for you? Besides, can you imagine not setting eyes on him or her until your wedding day? This situation is common in India, the Middle East and many parts of Africa. Marriage customs around the world often differ from our own. We don’t realize that people in other places often get married in very different ways—and with different motives.
In many countries, marriage is a practical matter. A marriage provides a safe and stable home for the husband and wife. It also joins two families, which benefits the couple’s parents and makes them happy. Marriage also brings children, making sure the couple will be taken care of in old age. Because marriage is important for the whole family, some cultures don’t let young people choose whom to marry.
Just as there are many different reasons for marriage, there are also many different wedding rituals. Every culture has its own ways of bringing good luck to the happy couple. In a typical Western wedding, the bride seeks good luck by wearing “something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue.” Something old represents the past. Something new represents success in the future. Something borrowed reminds the bride she can get help from her friends and family. And something blue reminds her to be true to her husband.
In Poland, one wedding tradition is not only lucky, but also very practical. The wedding guests pin money to the bride’s dress while she is dancing. The money is meant to bring luck and to help the young couple build their new life. In Bermuda, the young couple plant a tree in the yard of their new home. Once they move in, they take good care of the tree and make it grow. The planting of the tree is a good metaphor(比喻) for marriage. A truly good marriage is something that grows with care.
63.Which of the following statements does NOT support the idea “marriage is a practical matter”?
A. The husband or wife may have a safe and stable home.
B. A marriage brings children to take care of the couple when they are old.
C. A marriage benefits both the couple’s families.
D. Parents have no duty to help their children get married.
64. The underlined word “ritual” means________ .
A. methods B. ceremonies C. behaviors D. performances
65. What can be the subject of this passage?
A. People across the world get married in different ways and for different reasons.
B. Every culture had its own ways of bringing good luck to the young couple.
C. A truly good marriage is something that grows with care.
D. In many countries, marriage is a practical matter.
66. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. Parents choose a husband or wife for their child in India.
B. In many countries, some cultures don’t let young people choose whom to marry.
C. In Bermuda, the wedding guests pin money to the bride’s dress while she is dancing.
D.Something blue reminds the bride to be true to her husband in western wedding.

Knut lived in Berlin’s zoo. He was four and raised by zookeepers since a cub (幼崽) after his mother deserted him.
Now reports say the attention-loving polar bear was found dead in a pool in his cage at the Zoologischer Garten Berlin Saturday, with no immediate cause of death announced.
“This is awful,” said Berlin’s mayor Klaus Wowereit, according to the Sydney Herald. “We had all taken him to our hearts. He was the star of the Berlin Zoo.”
Most reports say Knut was alone when he died, as visitors watched him suddenly fall into the water. The known news site TMZ.com carried news of his death and says People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals’ German branch had previously complained that Knut suffered a lot from his mother and other bears.
Knut was very famous to many people, only because he seemed to love the limelight (出风头). After his first performance at the popular zoo, he became its star attraction, raising much income for the zoo and producing toys, DVDs and more. He was not diagnosed as being ill at the time, reports say. An investigation (调查) into the cause of his death is underway.
To everyone’s surprise, his beloved keeper, Thomas Doerflein, also died at an early age. Doerflein died at 44 in 2013 in his apartment after he had fed the cub and slept by its side, but later was told no longer to play or wrestle with Knut. At that time Knut was becoming an adult polar bear and considered too dangerous to interact with closely. Doerflein reportedly suffered a heart attack. Knut acted unhappily after his friend’s death.
67. When Knut was four, ________.
A. he left his birthplace B. he became homeless
C. he was kept by zookeepers D. he went into a zoo by mistake
68. We know from the passage that Knut ________.
A. became a popular toy B. was well protected in the zoo
C. brought in lots of money for the zoo D. was the only important cub in the zoo69. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.
A. nobody saw Knut when he fell into the water
B. Knut and his keeper loved each other deeply
C. Knut and his keeper died of the same disease
D. Knut’s mother and other bears were nice to Knut
70. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Knut Died of Strange Disease
B. Knut — a Popular Polar Bear in the Berlin Zoo
C. A Popular Polar Bear Was Rescued in the Berlin Zoo
D. A Popular Polar Bear Found Dead in a Mysterious Situation
To make our digestive (消化的) system work well, we should avoid doing some things after having a meal, for example, drinking water. It is true that a person should drink 8 glasses of water every day to stay healthy. However, drinking water right after eating or even during a meal may disrupt (扰乱) digestion. It might affect on the natural levels of acid and bile (酸和胆汁) that are necessary for proper digestion. What’s more, drinking cold water after eating might slow down (减慢)digestion. So try to avoid drinking water at least an hour after a meal, and avoid drinking it while eating.
Though walking after eating is healthy, doing it immediately after a meal is not. Doing so will make it difficult for the digestive system to take in nutrients (营养) from the food. Besides, the blood will flow towards other parts of the body, like legs, hands, etc., which will make the digestive tract not have enough amount of blood flow that is needed for proper digestion. So we should wait for at least 2 hours after eating, and then begin exercising.
Sleeping should also be avoided right after eating. This is because going to bed right after a meal will lead to improper digestion. What’s more, such a habit will also make you put on a lot of weight. Therefore, wait for an hour or two, and then go to sleep.
Many of us have the habit of drinking tea just after lunch or dinner, which is really unhealthy. The tea leaves are rich in acid which prevents the protein in the food from digesting. The best time to drink tea is at least one hour after eating.
Eating fruits right after a meal may fill the stomach with air and cause discomfort. They will also take time to reach the digestive tract, disturbing the entire process of digestion. To protect your stomach from digestive problems, eat fruits before or after 1-2 hours of a meal.
In a word, if you avoid doing all the above things after eating, you will surely make your digestion easy, and you will be less likely to have digestive problems.
