Canada's Alice Munro, called the “master of the contemporary short story”, won the 2013 Nobel Prize in literature, the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences announced Thursday. After that, the Nobel committee said on Twitter that it hadn't been able to contact Munro and left a phone message to tell her the good news. But The Canadian Press contacted her, and she was quoted as saying the award was “quite wonderful” and she was “terribly surprised.”
Doug Gibson, Munro's publisher read a statement on the author's behalf. “I am amazed and very grateful. I am particularly glad that winning this award will please so many Canadians. I'm happy that this will bring more attention to Canadian writing,” she said, according to Gibson.
“Munro is acclaimed for her finely tuned storytelling, which is characterized by clarity and psychological realism,” the Nobel committee said.
The author has won many honors over the years, including the 2009 Man Booker International Prize. “Alice Munro is mostly known as a short story writer and yet she brings as much depth, wisdom and precision to every story as most novelists bring to a lifetime of novels.” the Man Booker judging committee said at the time.
Munro, who lives in the southwestern Ontario town of Clinton, was born near there in Wingham. She started writing stories in her teen years and studied journalism and English at the University of Western Ontario. She published in various magazines starting in the 1950s. In 1968, she published Dance of the Happy Shades, a collection of short stories. In 1971 she published a collection of stories entitled Lives of Girls and Women, which critics have described as a coming-of-age work.
Munro gained world fame for writing about everyday people. “Here we have a world prize being won by someone who writes about housewives in Vancouver, booksellers in Victoria, bean farmers in Huron County and accountants and teachers and librarians—ordinary Canadian people, and she turns it into magic,” Gibson said.

Alison Malmon was trapping up (完成) the end of her freshman year at the University of Pennsylvania, US when she got the news: Her older brother Brian, a student at Columbia University, was suffering from mental illness.
Inspired by this, Malmon formed a group at her university to empower (使能够) students to talk openly about mental health. It soon blossomed into a national organization that today has more than 450 campus chapters. Leaders with the organization spend their time talking with college students about the pressure that today's young people face.
“What you hear often is just a need to be perfect,” said Malmon, “and a need to present oneself as perfect.”
And a new study in the UK proved that this need for perfectionism is simply part of today’s society. In the study, two researchers studied more than 40,000 students from the US, Canada, and the UK. They found that what they called “socially prescribed(社会定向型的) perfectionism” increased by a third between 1989 and 2016.
Lead researcher Thomas Curran said that while so many of today's young people try to present a perfect appearance online, social media isn’t the only reason behind this trend. Instead, he said, it may be driven by competition in modern society, meaning young people can't avoid being sorted and ranked in both education and employment. That comes from new norms(准则) like greater numbers of college students, standardized testing and parenting that increasingly emphasizes success in education.
For example, in 1976, half of high school seniors expected to get a college degree of some kind. By 2008, more than 80 percent expected the same. The researchers also said changes in parenting styles over the last two decades might have had an impact. As parents feel increased pressure to raise successful children, they in turn pass their “achievement anxieties" onto their kids through “excessive(过多的) involvement in their child’s routines, activities or emotions”
Those in the mental health community like Malmon say they’re concerned about the impact the culture of perfectionism has on mental health on campuses. “Mental health has truly become this generation's social justice issue,” she said. “It's our job to equip them with the tools and to let people know that it's not their fault.”
57. What is the article mainly about
A. The effects of the culture of perfectionism.
B. Research into the trend of perfectionism.
C. A group dedicated to helping people stay mentally healthy.
D. Various pressures that today's young people are facing.
58. What inspired Alison Malmon to start a group related to mental health

b. parents' high expectations of their children.
c. The decreasing number of college students.
d. The fierce competition in society.
e. Their desire to draw their parents’ attention.
A. a, b, c B. a, d, e C. a, b, d D. b, c, e
60. What does Malmon think is a way to help young people manage the pressure of perfectionism
A. Enabling them to know what is to blame for their pressure.
B. Lowering their expectations of themselves.
C. Reducing parents involvement in their children’s life.
D. Making them aware of what true social justice is.

When I go into a bank I get frightened. Everything frightens me. The moment I pass through the doors of a bank and attempt to do business there, I become an irresponsible fool. I knew this before, but my salary had been raised to fifty dollars a month and I felt that the bank was the only place for it.
So I walked unsteadily in and looked round at the clerks with fear. I had an idea that a person who was about to open an account must necessarily consult the manager.
I went up to a place marked "Accountant." My voice sounded as if it came from the grave.
"Can I see the manager " I said, and added solemnly, "alone." I don't know why I said "alone."
"Certainly," said the accountant(会计), and brought him.
The manager was a calm, serious man. I held my fifty-six dollars, pressed together in a ball, in my pocket. "Are you the manager " I said. God knows I didn't doubt it.
"Yes," he said.
"Can I see you," I asked, "alone " I didn't want to say "alone" again.
The manager looked at me with some anxiety. He felt that I had a terrible secret to tell.
"Come in here," he said, and led the way to a private room. He turned the key in the lock.
"We are safe from interruption here," he said. "Sit down." We both sat down and looked at each other. I found no voice to speak.
"You are one of Pinkerton's detectives(侦探), I suppose," he said.
"No, not from Pinkerton's," I said, seeming to mean that I was from a rival agency(竞争机构).
"To tell the truth," I went on, as if someone had urged me to tell lies about it, "I am not a detective at all. I have come to open an account. I intend to keep all my money in this bank."
The manager looked relieved but still serious; he felt sure now that I was a very rich man, perhaps a son of Baron Rothschild.
"A large account, I suppose," he said.
"Fairly large," I whispered. "I intend to place in this bank the sum of fifty-six dollars now and fifty dollars a month regularly."
The manager got up and opened the door. He called to the accountant.
"Mr. Montgomery," he said, unkindly loud, "this gentleman is opening an account. He will place fifty-six dollars in it. Good morning."
I stood up. A big iron door stood open at the side of the room.
"Good morning," I said, and walked into the safe.
"Come out," said the manager coldly, and showed me the other way.
I went up to the accountant's position and pushed the ball of money at him with a quick. My face was terribly pale.
"Here," I said, "put it in my account." The sound of my voice seemed to mean, "Let us do this painful thing while we feel that we want to do it."
He took the money and gave it to another clerk.
"Is it in the account " I asked in a hollow, shaking voice.
"It is," said the accountant.
"Then I want to draw a check."
My idea was to draw out six dollars of it for present use. Someone gave me a checkbook and someone else seemed to think that I was a man who owned millions of dollars, but was not feeling very well. I wrote something on the check and pushed it towards the clerk. He looked at it.
"What! Are you drawing it all out again " he asked in surprise. Then I realized that I had written fifty-six dollars instead of six. I was too upset and I had a feeling that it was impossible to explain the thing. All the clerks had stopped writing to look at me.
Bold and careless in my misery, I made a decision.
"Yes, the whole thing."
"You wish to draw your money out of the bank "
"Every cent of it."
"Are you not going to put any more in the account " said the clerk, astonished.
"Never."
The clerk prepared to pay the money.
"How will you have it " he said.
"What "
"How will you have it "
"Oh" —I understood his meaning and answered without even trying to think—"in fifty-dollar notes."
He gave me a fifty-dollar note.
"And the six " he asked coldly.
"In six dollar notes," I said. He gave me six dollars and I rushed out.
As the big door swung behind me I heard the sound of a roar of laughter that went up to the roof of the bank. Since then I use a bank no more. I keep my money in my pocket and my savings in silver dollars in a sock.

The loss of handwriting in our high-tech world saddens me. People of all ages openly admit their handwriting is becoming worse as keyboards replace pen and paper. Increasingly, schoolchildren deal with assignments on computer and struggle to write, having had little practice. I am of the generation that learnt to write with a dip pen in kindergarten and a fountain pen in high school; by the time I reached university, like everyone else, I used a functional ballpoint.
Handwriting has filled every aspect of my life since I was first taught to shape letters on the lined pages of my exercise books.
From the age of 12, I have kept a handwritten journal, recording my thoughts and feelings regarding both the significant and boring aspects of my life. Through this daily practice I connected with myself, explored experiences and found a way to interpret and make sense of my relationships. Although I rarely reread my written material, the process of writing has remained with me as a means of processing my feelings and filtering(过滤))my experiences.
Yet today, handwritten letters are as rare as a red panda. Few of us write letters any longer, even to those to whom we are close. We communicate differently when we e-mail or text, both methods characterized by speed and informality. The deep thinking, which accompanied a handwritten letter, is almost entirely absent. We may be communicating more frequently and with more people, but the depth and quality of our communication has reduced.
Sadly, modern technology tends to be temporary. Few of us keep old e-mails or even print them out, so a sense of history and memory is lost. Archivists(档案管理者)report that more information has been lost in the past decade than in the previous 150 years. It is too easy to press the delete button.
In many other areas of records, material is now in the digital format. Yet saving material in a digital format only is extremely unstable. How it will survive the future remains a problem.
In this digital world of text, e-mails and instant messaging, the perceived value of writing is no longer obvious and the case for retaining the practice of writing needs to be made. Should we save the humble pen and paper when laptops and mobiles are functional, universal and unstoppable Should children continue to be taught to write with a pen and paper
With its passing, a good mode of self-expression is being lost. I invite readers to engage with handwriting and become aware of this special skill that has created civilization for centuries.

As is described in the passage, Mr. Zeng firmly kept his wife’s promise to his child, from which we learn that Mr. Zeng is worth depending on and good at educating children.
I can't agree more with Mr. Zeng's education method. Had I been his child, I would have formed a deep impression and gradually cultivated this quality. Just as an old saying goes, action speaks louder than words. “If our parents themselves can do what they promise, we are much likely to follow their example.”
The passage reminded me of my own experience. Once as a monitor, I made a promise to my head teacher that I would serve as a role model and wouldn't play cards in class any more. Hard as it was to break the addiction, I resisted the temptation in time and kept my promise. Since then, I have realized that it is keeping our promise that makes us feel a sense of fulfillment and win respect from others. So, please stick to your promise.

Text 10
Today I’m going to tell you something about table manners in some countries. I think you already know that people in different countries have different ways of doing things. Something that is rude in one country may well be quite polite in another. For example, in Britain you mustn’t lift your bowl to your mouth when you're having some liquid food. And in Japan you needn't worry about making a noise when you drink it. It shows that you are enjoying it. But that's considered bad manners in Britain.
In Britain we try not to put our hands on the table at all during a meal. In Mexico, however, guests are expected to keep their hands on the table throughout a meal. But it is in the Arab countries that we really must be careful with our hands. You see in Arab countries you mustn't eat with your left hand. This is considered to be very impolite. So what should you do if you visit another country Well you needn't worry. You can ask the native people there for help or just watch carefully and try to do as they do, not as you do at home.
