I am a taxi driver. One Monday morning, I had stopped at New York Hospital when I found a well-dressed man coming over. He was waving to me. I waited until he jumped into the taxi. “La Guardia Airport, please,” he said.
As always, I wondered about my passenger. “What do you do?” “I am working at the hospital.” For some unknown reason, I decided to ask for his help.
“Could I ask a favor of you?” He didn’t answer. “I have a son, 16. He’s doing well in school. He wants a job this summer. Is there any possibility that you might get him a summer job?” After a minute, he said, “The medical students have a research project. Maybe he could fit in. Have him send me his school records.” He searched his pocket and handed me a card.
That evening, I pulled the card from my pocket. “Robbie,” I said proudly, “This could be a summer job for you. Send him your school records.” He read it out loud, “Fred Plum, New York Hospital.” “Is this a joke?” he said in doubt. After I shouted and threatened (恐吓) to cut off his pocket-money, Robbie promised to send off his grades the next morning.
Two weeks later, when I arrived home, my son handed me a letter from Plum. He was to phone Plum’s secretary for an interview.
Robbie got the job. The white coat he wore made him feel more important than he really was. As high school graduation neared, Plum was kind enough to write letters of recommendation (推荐) for universities. At last, Robbie was admitted to New York Medical College.

Asia has long tradition of tea-drinking. And China is no exception.
However, lately more and more Chinese people are turning to a different drink. Coffee has become an increasingly popular choice of Chinese people living abroad and in the country’s huge cities. It is also a popular crop among those living in the mountains of southern Yunnan Province.
In big cities such as Beijing, coffee shops seem to be on nearly every major street corner. These shops are not just selling drinks from Starbucks, the world-famous coffee company. Coffee businesses from South Korea, Taiwan, HongKong and Britain are also operating in China.
Tea-drinking is steeped (浸泡) in the culture and traditions of many countries, like China and Japan. But is that changing? Are young people from Asia now choosing a cup of coffee instead of tea?
BeiBei Su is from China. She has been living in the United States for the past eight years. Before that, she lived in Italy for two years. Ms. Su says she likes tea better than coffee. But she adds that may not be true among the young generation in China. Many young Chinese people drink coffee socially ---when meeting with friends. Yang Lin lives in the U.S. but comes from an area in China famous for growing tea. She used to only drink tea while in China. But now, she says, she drinks both and for different reasons.
Yang Lin says that drinking coffee for her is a social event. She and her co-workers like to sit in a cafe and talk over a cup of coffee. Voyo is another Chinese woman who now lives in Washington, D.C. She says that after moving to the U.S. her tastes changed. We would call her a coffee convert, someone who now chooses to drink coffee.
With more people drinking coffee, many see an economic(经济的)opportunity for Chinese-grown beans. China-grown coffee could be a money-maker even if most of the coffee on sale in China is imported(进口的).
28. What does the author mainly introduce?

B. More and more Chinese are choosing coffee to drink.
C. People in big cities like drinking coffee better than tea.
D. More Asian people are turning to different drinks.
29. The underlined word “convert” in paragraph 6 means _________
A. A person who has changed to drink coffee.
B. A person who has changed to drink tea.
C. A person who has changed to grow tea.
D. A person who has changed to grow coffee.
30. Why does Yang Lin drink coffee?
A. Because she lives in the U.S. Now. B. Because she can talk with friends.
C. Because she has drunk tea so long. D. Because her tastes has changed.
31. From the last paragraph, we can infer that_______________.
A. less and less coffee will be imported in China in the future.
B. the China-grown coffee beans will be sold to the world soon.
C. the need of coffee will offer more chances to make money.
D. Chinese economy will depend on coffee beans in the future.

Close your eyes, what does your dream hotel look like? Does it have chandeliers (吊灯)? Do the rooms have beds covered with rose petals (花瓣)? Do the bathrooms have Jacuzzis (浴缸)? Are there breathtaking views from the balcony? Is the hotel made of brick? Marble? Ice? Ice sounds a bit ridiculous, but a hotel made of ice is actually a reality.
Sweden’s Icehotel is the latest cool hotel in town, and it really is made of ice. So, how did this idea come about? It all started in 1990. A French artist held the opening of his exhibition in a man-made igloo (圆顶建筑) on the frozen Tome River- home of the Icehotel. The igloo was named “Arctic Hall” and attracted many visitors. Amongst these visitors was a brave group of adventurers who used the igloo as their accommodation. This act of bravery, (or madness, depending on your perspective)inspired the construction of the Icehotel.
Situated 200 km above the Arctic Circle, the hotel is only open during the winter months. Why? Because the ice starts to melt in the spring time. This means that the hotel is built from scratch (刮伤) every year. As soon as winter begins, architects, ice sculptors and artists meet in Sweden’s Lapland to build this beautiful creation.
But does this hotel have any of the facilities you find in a regular hotel? Well, actually, yes. In fact, the ice hotel seems to have everything: the famous “Absolute IceBar”, an ice art exhibition and a cinema. It even has an ice sauna (桑拿浴) and spa to keep you warm. And, of course, you can enjoy the natural habitat that surrounds the hotel, There is a snowmobile safari which takes you across the snowfields. And if you’re feeling brave, you can drive the snowmobile yourself.
The Icehotel is a real find. And, it’s not impossible to get to, either. There are flights and trains every day. If you’re travelling from London, it will take you only three and a half hours to get there. So, what are you waiting for? Just make sure you wrap up warm and take a thermal sleeping bag.
32. Why did the author ask so many questions in Paragraph 1?
A. To express his doubts. B. To introduce the main topic.
C. To present his dream hotel. D. To compare different hotels.
33. According to the passage, “Arctic Hall” was actually used to __________________ .
A. hold an exhibition B. offer adventurous activities
C. store paintings and materials D. provide accommodation for visitors
34. What is right about the Icehotel?
A. It is open all the year round.
B. It is located outside the Arctic Circle.
C. It is designed by Swedish artists.
D. It takes on a new look every year.
35. According to Paragraph 4, you can do many things in the Icehotel except _______________ .
A. drink in the bar B. enjoy ice sculptures
C. drive your car around D. see a film in the cinema

Get a Thorough Understanding of Yourself
Throughout your lifetime it is you yourself that you spend the most time being with or dealing with. 36 When you are going upwards in life, you tend to overvalue yourself. When you are going downhill, you tend to undervalue yourself.
37 Whether you compare yourself to a towering tree or grass, whether you think you are a high mountain or a small stone, you represent a state of nature that has its own reason for existence. If you sincerely admire yourself, you’ll have a real sense of self-appreciation, which will give you confidence. 38
Getting a thorough understanding of yourself also requires doing yourself a favor when it’s needed. In times of anger, do yourself a favor by releasing it in a quiet place so that you won’t be hurt by its flames. In times of sadness, do yourself a favor by sharing it with your friends so as to change a bad mood into a cheerful one. 39 Show yourself loving concern about your health and daily life. Unless you know perfectly well when and how to do yourself a favor, you won’t be confident and ready enough to resist (抵抗) the attack of illness. To get a thorough understanding of yourself is to get full control of your life. 40
A. Then you will find your life full of color and flavor.
B. You should try to get a better understanding of yourself.
C. To get a thorough understanding of yourself needs self-appreciation.
D. But it is precisely yourself that you have the least understanding of.
E. In times of tiredness, do yourself a favor by getting a good sleep.
F. Make sure that you are in good condition all the time.
G. As soon as you gain full confidence in yourself, you’ll be enabled to fight and overcome difficult situations.

书面表达(20分)
Dear schoolmates,
As chairman of the students’ union, I think I bear the responsibility to draw your attention to the phenomenon that a lot of things are being wasted in our school. For instance, walking around the campus, you can easily find an empty classroom with lights on. In the dining hall, large quantities of left-over food are thrown away every day. It’s also common that many students still use disposable products for convenience, which really results in the waste of materials.
Accordingly, it is time that we took action to stop wasting on campus. First of all, it’s essential for us to turn off lights and other electrical appliances when we are not using them. Besides, buy food according to what you need. We should keep in mind that every grain is the fruit of hard work. Additionally, avoid using disposable products, which will surely contribute to the reduction of waste.
Every little bit counts. Let’s start from the very little things around us and stop wasting.
Students’ Union
