If you want to help children develop language and speech skills, UCLA researchers say, “listening to what they have to say is just as important as talking to them.”
The effect of a conversation between a child and an adult is about six times as great as the effect of adult speech input alone, the researchers found. “Adults speaking to children helps language develop, but what matters much more is the interaction,” said the study’ s lead author, Frederick Zimmerman, an associate professor in the School of Public Health at the University of California, Los Angeles. The researchers also found that TV viewing didn’t have much of an effect — positively or negatively — as long as it wash’ t displacing conversations between an adult and a child.21教育网
The UCLA study included 275 families with children between 2 months and 48 months old. They represented a variety of incomes and education. The researchers found that, in an average day, children hear about 13,000 spoken words from adults and participated in about 400 adult-child conversations a day.【来源:21·世纪·教育·网】
Assessed separately, factors positively associated with language development included each additional 100 conversations a day and each 1,000 word increase in the number of words spoken by adults and heard by children. When looked at alone, TV was negatively associated with language development. But, when the three factors were analyzed together, the only one that stood out was conversation between adults and children.【来源:21cnj*y.co*m】
“The more a child speaks and interacts with an adult, the better idea a parent has about where the child is,” Zimmerman said. “Although it’ s mostly done unconsciously, parents will provide feedback and correct mistakes. They’ll also tailor their speech to the child. Parents can give a child words by talking to them about what they’re doing, such as,“I’m putting on your pajamas now”. But give your child the opportunity to talk, hopefully without the rest of the noise in the environment,” she added. “If parents can carve out some conversation time — maybe at bath time or at dinner time — that’ s a wonderful thing.”
21.The researchers also found that TV viewing ________.
A. could have a positive effect on a child’s language development
B. had a little effect on a child’ s language development
C. affected a child’s language development more negatively than positively
D. affected a child’s language development both negatively and positively

A. parents should let their children talk most of the time
B. children should watch TV programs selectively

D. it’ s no good for parents to correct their children’ s mistakes when they are speaking
23.We can conclude from the last paragraph that ________.
A. parents should let a child repeat what he or she says
B. bath time or dinner time is the best chance for parents to talk to a child
C. parent-child conversation should be carried out at a proper time
D. parents should leave a child talking alone
24.The underlined word “tailor” in the last paragraph can be best replaced by ________.
A. control B. improve C. pass D. adjust

Recently I came in contact with the true meaning of love. That would have been, Kane, a boy. Kane was the two-year-old son of Jolene, my new neighbor.
At a glance Kane was a sight. He’d been born with hard sticks for legs. And on that morning I witnessed the effect that Kane’s physical shortcomings had on his family. But I also witnessed much more than that.
I saw an extraordinary family that embraced this special child, a family that wouldn’t allow Kane to know he was different. Jolene had constructed a small cart just a few inches off the floor for his son to get around. Using his hands to move, Kane moved the cart to “go to” any place just as everyone else was able to do. Kane worked that little cart like a master. Kane was a vital focus of the entire family. He was more than just a member of the family; he was the soul. This child was the driver, the motivator, and the founder of much of the interaction.
Much later in my life, I came to realize that God had sent this child to help some of us who just weren’t getting what love was all about. Even with my limited capacity for understanding at the time that Kane was a highly-developed spirit with great wisdom.
Kane demanded attention, but not because of his mobility challenges or other apparent shortcomings. In his mind, he had no challenges or shortcomings. The truth is that he received attention because he was alive and real and had so much to offer.
Kane had and still has a lot of warm and powerful energy sent to us all, so we might learn that love is beyond all things. Kane, a fragile yet lovely baby, was here to teach us all an important lesson. And at the age of two he did just that.
25. How did the author think of Kane’s family members?
A. It was ridiculous for them to make a cart for Kane.
B. They were greatly brave to face all the difficulties.
C. They were strange because they locked Kane at home.【出处:21教育名师】
D. It was respectable for them to love Kane in their own way.
26. How did Kane “go to” everywhere he wanted to go?
A. By moving his cart with his own hands.
B. By asking his father to lead him ahead with a stick.
C. By asking his grandparents to push him everywhere.
D. With the help of a babysitter employed for him.
27. Kane needed attention because he wanted to show ________.
A. he could challenge his difficulties in moving
B. he had challenges or shortcomings in his life
C. he had the power to prove he was capable too
D. he himself needed to be looked after by others
28. What can we learn from Kane’s story?
A. Love me, love my dog. B. Pure gold fears no fire.
C. Love is above all things. D. Many hands make light work.

Mental and health experts believe personality plays an important part in how we experience stress. Personality is the way a person acts, feels and thinks.
Some people are aggressive and always in a hurry. They often become angry when things do not happen the way they planned. They belong to “Type A” personality. Studies suggest that these people often get stress-related disorders. The “Type B” personality is calmer. These people are able to deal with all kinds of situations more easily. As a result, they are less affected by stress.
Studies have also shown that men and women deal with stress differently. Women seem to be better able to deal with stress than men are. However, experts say women are three times more likely to develop depression in reaction to the stress in their lives. American writer John Gray became famous for his book, “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus”. He notes that men and women have opposite ways of dealing with stress. For a man, the best way is to rest and forget about daily problems. But a woman suffering from stress needs to talk about her problems.”21·cn·jy·com
Experts say there are several ways to deal with stress, including deep breathing, exercise, eating healthy foods, getting enough rest and balancing the time spent in working and playing. Exercise is one of the most effective stress-reduction measures, as physical changes from exercise make you feel better. In addition, exercise can also improve the body's defense system against disease.
Keeping stress to yourself can make problems worse. Experts say that expressing emotions to friends or family members or writing down your feelings can help reduce stress. And they also suggest that people should attempt to accept or change stressful situations whenever possible.
29. According to the experts, ________.
A. people respond to stress quite differently
B. people make the same response to stress
C. unlike women, men tend to feel depressed more easily
D. personality has nothing to do with how we experience stress
30. Compared with “Type A” personality, “Type B” personality ________.
A. causes more troubles
B. is less able to cope with different situations
C. is more easily affected by stress
D. tends to solve problems more peacefully
31. By saying “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus”, John Cray means that they ________. 21世纪教育网版权所有
A. express emotions in a different way
B. cope with stress in a different way
C. suffer from stress in a similar way
D. develop stress in the opposite way
32. If you want to reduce your stress, you can ________.
A. take some exercise B. keep it to yourself
C. remain silent D. ignore the stressful situation
D
I had to knock on the taxi to get his attention. Finally, the driver, a man about 60, looked up from behind the wheel and apologized, “I'm sorry, but I was reading a letter.” He sounded as if he had a cold or a cough.
Since I was in no hurry, I told him to finish his letter. He shook his head, explaining that he had already read it several times and almost knew it by heart. Curious, I asked whether it was from a child or maybe a grandchild. “This isn't family,” he replied, “though he might just as well have been a regular member of the family. Old Ed and I grew up together.”
They were always friends. But since he moved away from the neighborhood 30 years ago, it'd generally just been postcards at Christmas time between them. A couple of weeks ago, Ed died. “I should have kept in touch.” He repeated this, more to himself than to me. To comfort him, I said sometimes we just didn't seem to find the time. “But we used to find the time,” he said. “Take a look.” He handed the letter over to me.
The first sentence “I've been meaning to write for some time, but I've always delayed it.” reminded me of myself. It went on to say that he often thought about the good times they had had together. When I read the part where it said “Your friendship really means a lot to me, more than I can say because I'm not good at saying things like that”, I found myself nodding in agreement.
We had gone several kilometers and were almost at my hotel, so I read the last paragraph: “So I thought you'd like to know that I was thinking of you.” And it was ended with “Your Old Friend, Tom.”
“I thought your friend's name was Ed,” I said.
“I'm Tom,” he explained. “It's a letter I wrote to Ed before I knew he'd died. I never put it in the mailbox. I guess I should have written it sooner.” His face was pale as he wiped his eyes with a handkerchief.www.21-cn-jy.com
When I got to my hotel room I didn't unpack right away. I had to write a letter and post it.
33. Who wrote the letter?
A. Tom. B. Old Ed. C. The author. D. The driver's grandchild.
34. It can be inferred from the passage that the driver regretted ________.
A. missing Ed's funeral
B. moving away from his neighborhood
C. forgetting to send Ed Christmas cards
D. not being able to keep in touch with Ed
35. From Paragraph 4, we can learn that the author of the passage ________.
A. often failed to write to his friends
B. had no intention to write to his friends
C. had many great moments with his friends
D. was good at expressing feelings to his friends

Why Do We Forget Things?
When it comes to having perfect memories, it is apparent that we humans must have had some faults in our blueprints! Why don’t we remember everything that we want to remember? It makes us feel upset and get discouraged. 36____ However, it’s true that we are all forgetful. 21*cnjy*com
37____ These are stored in what we call our “long-term memory”. What about before age three? Sigmund Freud, a doctor of Vienna, discovered the fact that we forget most of our early childhood. 38____ They have different opinions. A very good theory, born from the results of experimentation with babies, is that absence of language ability at the time of an event stopped us from describing it to others.
39____ Experts say that you can keep about seven things in your memory at once for up to three days. During that time, you may forget something in order to put something else in its place, or you put it into long-term memory. What goes into short-term memory are things you’ve learned about recently, in the past day or two. 40____ For example, you may have met you favorite star last week, and this week you can tell all the details to a friend. A simple example to explain your short-term memory is to look at a list of twenty words for a minute or two. You will discover that you cannot remember more than about seven of them and that they are the ones in the beginning and at the end of the list because your mind has judged them to be more important than those in the middle.
A. Scientist now know that it may take longer to remember things for the old.
B. However, it is widely recognized that short-term memory can be improved.
C. Sometimes, it even caused us to lose self-respect or others to think less of us.
D. Psychologists (心理学家) have been studying what causes this forgetfulness since Freud’s time.2·1·c·n·j·y
E. Most of us have vivid memories of our lives from about age third to our present ages.
F. Only if something really unusual happens does it stay in your short-term memory for longer.www-2-1-cnjy-com
G. The other type of memory, the “short-term memory”, is what we are usually referring to when we say, “I forgot.”

At the end of the 16th century, English was only spoken by the native speakers. However, English has changed quite a lot over the past four centuries. At present, English, including British English and American English, has become an international language. A great number of people in some African and Asian countries, such as India and China, speak English as the second language or learn it as a foreign language. As far as I’m concerned, English is so important in our daily life that we must try our best to learn it well.
