Robotic surgery is one thing, but sending a robot inside the body to carry out an operation quite another, which has long been a goal of some researchers to produce tiny robotic devices being capable of traveling through the body to deliver drugs or to make repairs without the need for a single cut, the possibility of which has just got a bit closer.
However, unlike the plot of one film—which featured a microscopic (微小的)crew and submarine(潜艇) traveling through a scientist’s bloodstream — this device could not be inserted into blood vessels(管)because it is too big. While other types of miniature(微型的)swallowable robots have been developed in the past, their role has mostly been limited to capturing images inside the body. In a presentation this week to the International Conference, Daniela Rus and Shuhei Miyashita of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology described a robot they have developed that can be swallowed and used to collect dangerous objects accidentally taken in.
To test their latest version, DrRus and Dr Miyashita designed a robot as a battery hunter, which might seem to be an odd(奇怪的) task, but more than 3,500 people in America alone, most of them children, swallow the tiny button cells used in small electronic devices by accident every year. To start with, the researchers created an artificial esophagus(食道)and stomach made out of silicone(硅胶). It was closely modeled on that found in a pig and filled with medical liquid; the robot itself is made from several layers of different materials, including pig intestine(肠), and contains a little magnet(磁铁). This is folded up and encased in a 10mm×27mm capsule of ice. Once this reaches the stomach the ice melts and the robot unfolds which is moved andguided with the use of a magnetic field outside the body. In their tests, the robot was able to touch a button battery and draw it with its own magnet, and during dragging it along, the robot could then be directed towards the intestines where it would eventually be gotten rid of through the anus(肛门). After it, the researchers sent in another robot loaded with medication to deliver it to the site of the battery burn to speed up healing.
The artificial stomach being transparent on one side, the researchers were able to see the batteries and visually control the robots. If not, that will require help with the help from imaging system, which will be a bit more of a challenge, but DrRus and Dr Miyashita are determined to succeed.
58. We learn from Paragraph 3 that _________.
A. the researchers did the experiment on a chosen animal
B. the robot took necessary drugs besides a little magnet
C. the actual size of the robot may be larger than the capsule of ice
D. digesting the swallowed batteries is difficult for children
59. What may the experiment mean to the medical world?
A. The surgeries will cost patients much money.
B.Fewer children will swallow the button cells.
C.A robot will be invented travelling blood vessels.
D. Patients will suffer less for some surgeries.
60. Which can be the most suitable title for the passage?
A. An Experiment on RobotB. The Fantastic Robotic Voyage
C. Tiny Robot, Significant Role D. The Exploration of Robot Technology

Working through a self-help program online can prevent or delay major depression disorder in people who are vulnerable (易受伤的), a study finds. Similar programs have been used to treat depression, but this may be the first one tested to prevent it, the researchers say.
Online programs for mental health problems can be as effective as face-to-face treatment and offer some advantages: Low cost and available at any time. But they’re not panaceas.
The study, which was conducted by researchers from Germany, involved 406 people with subthreshold depression, which is defined as having some symptoms of depression but not enough to be diagnosed with major depressive disorder.
In this experiment, half of the participants were asked to do six half-hour-long exercises that were based on cognitive behavioral therapy (认知行为疗法) and problem-solving therapy, which are techniques commonly used for in-person therapy. In the cognitive behavioral therapy, participants were asked to identify positive activities they used to engage in and then were asked to actively plan those activities again. At the next session, participants reflected on their experiences. For the problem-solving therapy, people were asked to create a list of the things that matter most to them in their lives and brainstorm on how to incorporate those things into daily life. They next were asked to categorize problems and worries into “manageable” and “unmanageable”; the main focus in problem-solving therapy is to tackle those problems that are considered manageable.
Both therapies are intended to change negative thinking in order to change mood and behavior. After completing each exercise, participants in the intervention (干预) group received written individualized feedback from an online trainer. The trainers did not offer any therapeutic (治疗的) advice, only motivation and encouragement to continue the exercises. Participants also could repeat the online sessions as often as they liked. The control group received information about depression but didn’t have to read it.
Of the 406 participants that began the study, 335 completed the telephone follow-up at the end of 12 months. Twenty-seven percent in the intervention group experienced depression compared with 41 percent in the control group.
It is unclear if the people who went on to develop major depressive disorder had experienced it before. Lead author Claudia Buntrock says that because the study only tracked participants’ mental health over the course of 12 months, the long-term effectiveness of the intervention is unknown. “It’s also not clear if this kind of program could be used widely. It took the trainers about 30 minutes to provide feedback for each session, and they also stayed in touch with participants via instant messaging.” he adds.
61. According to the experiment, the participants _______.
A. are treated in the same way by the trainers B.are divided into two different groups
C. show severe symptoms of depression D.access the online program just for once
62. The underlined word “panaceas” in paragraph 2 probably refers to something that can ___.
A.appeal to every patient B. produce harmful effects
C.solve all the problems D. distribute powerful results
63. The author develops Paragraph 4 mainly by _______.
A. making comparisons B. offering an explanation
C. providing examples D.describing a process
64. From what Claudia Buntrock said, we can infer_______.
A.trainers have spent a lot of time and energy on the experiment
B. on-line programmes have long-term effects on depression
C. people suffering from depression have experienced it before
D. twelve months is long enough to carry out the experiment
D
Are you a different person when you speak a foreign language? That’s just one of the questions the New Yorker’swriter and native North Carolinian Lauren Collins explores in her autobiography, about her tough efforts to master French after marrying a Frenchman whose name — Olivier — she couldn’t even pronounce properly. When in French ranges from the humorously personal story to a deeper look at various theories of language acquisition and linguistics (语言学).
The couple met in London “on more or less neutral(中立的) ground: his continent, my language.” But the balance shifted when they moved to Geneva for Olivier’s work. The normally voluble Collins found herself at a loss — “nearly speechless.” The language barrier, and her dependence on her husband for simple things like buying the right cut of meat worsened her mixed feelings about “unlovely, but not ridiculous” Geneva. She comments, “Language, as much as land, is a place. To be cut off from it is to be, in a sense, homeless.”
Her sense of alienation (疏离感) leads to an examination of America’s miserable record when it comes to foreign languages, “Linguists call America ‘the graveyard(坟墓) of languages’ because of its singular ability to take in millions of immigrants and make their native languages die out in a few generations,” Collins writes. Educated in Wilmington, N.C., and at Princeton, she could — like the vast majority of Americans — only speak their mother tongue.
Eight months after she moved to Switzerland, Collins gives up on the natural acquisition of language and finally attends a French course. As she struggles with grammar and vocabulary, Collins notes smartly that vert (green),verre (glass), ver (worm), vers (toward), and vair (squirrel) compose a quintuple homonym (同形异义). “Although it’s difficult, French can try” she says.
French is actually considered among the easiest languages for an English speaker to learn, especially compared to Arabic or Mandarin Chinese. Collins, whose notably rich English vocabulary includes glossolalia (nonsense speech) and shibboleth (catchword or slogan), finds plenty of terrific French words to love. She writes, “English is a trust fund, an unearned inheritance (遗产), but I’ve worked for every bit of French I’ve banked.”
Unlike JhumpaLahiri, who became so hooked on(对……着迷) Italian and used it to write In Other Words, Collins’s goals for learning French were more modest, “I wanted to speak French and to sound like North Carolina.” She also wanted to be able to deal with chimney sweeps and butchers(肉贩), communicate with her in-laws, and “to touch Olivier in hisown language.” She admits that she feels different speaking French, “Its austerity (朴素) made me feel more confused.”
Readers looking for the romantic spark of classic cross-cultural love stories featuring an outgoing American and a shy Frenchman will find flashes of it here.Among the many cultural differences the couple argue over are her enthusiastic American habit of applying the verb love to express enthusiasm for shoes, strawberries, and husbands alike. But there’s far more to Collins’ book than fantastic comedy, and those who have weathered(经受) linguistic crossings themselves tend to find particular resonance (共鸣) in its inquiry(查询,探究) into language, identity, and transcultural translation.
Arranged by chapters named for verb tenses, When in French works its way from The Past Perfect (Le plus-que-parfait) to The Present (Le Présent) and The Conditional (Le Conditionnel). Collins ends on a delightful note with Le Futur — fitting for a new mother about to move with her hard-won French husband, French language, and Swiss-born daughter to the French-speaking city of her dreams, Paris.
65. Which of the following statements is TRUE about When in French?
A. It describes how most American people learn French.
B. The author tells her experiences in a serious way.
C. It introduces a variety of theories about French learning.
D. The book offers a traditional way of learning a foreign language.
66. Which of the following has the closest meaning to the underlined word “voluble” in Paragraph 2?
A. graceful B. talkative C.dependent D. energetic
67. Why do Linguists call America “the graveyard of languages”?
A. Because other languages are prohibited in America.
B.Because American culture swallows up immigrants’ native languages gradually.
C. Because immigrants’ native languages contradict English in America.
D. Because only English-speaking people can immigrate into America.68. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4 and Paragraph 5?
A. Collins’ English vocabulary knowledge contributes little to her French learning.
B. It’s terrifying for Collins to have French words in store for practical use.
C. Arabic or Mandarin Chinese are easier to learn than French for English speakers.
D. Collins has found out some effective ways of mastering French words.
69. The example of JhumpaLahir in the passage is given to show that _________.
A. Collins aims at using French for her daily life
B. Collins wants to apply French to serve her writing
C. it’s inappropriate for JhumpaLahir to write in another language
D. foreign language always makes learners feel complicated about life
70. Which of the following items are mentioned by the author of this book review?
① the theme ② the structure ③ the publisher ④ the popularity ⑤ the writing style

A complex country where modern life sits shoulder to shoulder with poverty, India is a study in contrasts. Yet some common threads run through the country, creating a system of etiquette (礼仪) and tradition that is logical but difficult for first-time visitors to grasp. Understanding India’s customs and ways of interacting will help you avoid the unnecessary break of etiquette.
Social Order
India has a long history of rigid social order, defined by a 2,000-year-old caste (种姓)system. Today, caste does not have the same impact that it once did, but much of the social and business structure is rooted in the system. Families are paternal(父系的), with the father considered the head of the household. Corporations follow strict hierarchies (阶层). Teachers are greatly respected and considered holders of knowledge. When interacting, the Indian people are always aware of their spot in the social order. Introduce yourself to elders or higher-ranked officials first. Acknowledge each person individually in order of rank. Men typically shake hands with men and women with women, but cross-gender touching is discouraged.
Body Language
Although not all Indians are Hindu, a system of body part ranking arises from Hindu beliefs and is widely adopted throughout India. The head is the most important body part, while the feet are considered dirty. Always take off your shoes when entering someone’s home. Touching someone else’s feet is a sign of respect reserved for the most honored elders. The left hand is considered unclean. Never pass objects, eat or signal with your left hand. Living in crowded conditions, most Indians have a much smaller definition of personal space than those in the West. Incidental physical contact and sustained eye contact are common and should not be taken personally.
Dining
Dress modestly for meals, whether in a private home, restaurant or other location. Always refuse the first offer of snacks, drinks or other pre-meal treats, but accept the second offer. At traditional meals, women serve the men and then eat together after the men’s meal concludes. In modern India, especially at business meetings, everyone often eats together. Hierarchies are strictly observed, with the guest of honor served first and everyone else served by rank. Serve and eat only with your right hand. Leave some food on your plate to indicate you were satisfied with the size of the meal.
Dress Codes
In general, India is a conservative country with a strict sense of modesty. Female solo travelers are relatively rare and often attract unwanted attention. Minimize the chances for disturbance by dressing conservatively.Business wearing is traditional and often formal, although it is sometimes more relaxed during hotter weather. Always err on the side of formality for a first meeting and then follow your hosts’ lead for subsequent(随后的) events. When touring temples and sacred sites, peoplecan’t expose their shoulders and lower body. Shorts and sleeveless shirts are discouraged throughout the country and are never acceptable at religious sites.

Recently, a survey on homework preference has been conducted among senior two students. The results are as follows.
As is shown in the chart above, more than half of the students put their math homework in the first place while 7% rank their Chinese as the most important. Meanwhile, English is regarded as most significant by 18% of the participants, and the other subjects attract the attention of 21% of the students.
Undoubtedly, the results reflect the position of each subject in GaoKao. As one of the fundamental subjects, math always comes first. Besides, some students hold the view that math is the most interesting and challenging, and it seems easier for us to have a sense of achievement in it. By contrast, some students, especially boys, find it hard to obtain immediate results when doing Chinese and English homework.
However, each subject has its unique charm and they are of the same value. Therefore, I think we should take every subject seriously and improve our studies in a balanced way.(153)

M: Hey, Joanne. What’s up? Are you heading to the beach, too?
W: I’m trying to get there as fast as I can. I need to deposit some money at the bank and mail some letters at the post office. But first, I’ve really got to find a ladies’ room!
Text 2
W: Have you looked in the mirror today?
M: Uh, not since I woke up this morning… Why? Did I forget to do my hair or something?
W: Well, let’s just say that green ties and pink shirts don’t really mix…
Text 3
M: I’m starving! What have you got to eat around here?
W: Um, not much. I really wasn’t expecting anyone over, so…
M: All you have in here is some salad and one of those health drinks that only girls drink…
W: Look. I don’t show up at your door without calling and criticize your food, do I?
Text 4
W: Do you have any idea what time it is now? Have you ever heard your phone?
M: I’m sorry. But my phone ran out of power. I got back here as fast as I could because I knew you’d be worried.
Text 5
W: Hi, James! It’s me, Diane. Oh, I’m so glad I caught you. I was just talking to Drake, and…
M: I’m sorry. But I think you dialed the wrong number. My name is Daniel.

W: Hi, welcome to Burger Palace. Can I take your order, please?
M: Yeah. Two bacon cheeseburgers and two orders of fries, please.
W: All right. Would you like anything to drink with that?
M: No, thanks. We’ve got sodas at home.
W: So, that’s going to be to go, right?
M: That’s right.
W: OK. Your total is $17.
M: Here’s a twenty. Keep the change.
W: Oh, thank you so much! You are Number 255. Your order should be ready in about five minutes.

M: Can you see how close we are on the map?
W: It looks like we’re pretty close, but these smart phone maps are hard to read.
M: Yeah, I always prefer to look at a paper map. I think I still have some in the pocket of the right door, if you wanna grab one…
W: No, I’d probably be even worse at that. Uh-oh, I think you were supposed to turn left back there.
M: You mean that you were supposed to tell me to turn left back there?
W: Yeah, I’m sorry. I don’t have one of these kinds of phones, so I’m afraid I don’t really know what I’m doing. Do you want to pull over and take a look?
M: No. It’s okay. Just push that little button on the side of the phone to turn on the sound. That will allow us to hear the directions out loud.

W: Hey, are you watching YouTube?
M: Yeah. I love all the funny videos that people post.
W: Have you ever seen the YouTube show Epic Meal Time(《超级开饭时间》)?
M: Uh, no. I didn’t know YouTube had shows. I thought it was only home videos and music videos…stuff like that.
W: Well, YouTube also has channels, just like regular TV. There are many different kinds of shows every week. Most of them are shorter and cheaper to make than regular TV, though.
M: YouTube is even cooler than I thought! So, what’s Epic Meal Time?
W: There’s a group of guys who make the unhealthy meals they can possibly cook. Everything has bacon on it. Most things are fried, and there is a ton of cheese on everything. We’re talking tens of thousands of calories in one meal! In this show, the main guy introduces the meal, and then you see them shopping for the ingredients. You watch them cook everything. And at the end, they all eat it with their friends!

W: Brett, can I ask you a question about your dog?
M: Sure. What’s up?
W: Well, I have to get my little Ferguson some medicine.
M: Oh, is everything all right?
W: Yes, of course. It’s not like he’s sick or anything. I give him medicine every month as part of his regular care, so he doesn’t get any diseases from insects or other dogs.
M: Oh, right. I do that for Fargo, too.
W: Yeah. That was what I was going to ask you about. Where do you buy your dog’s medicine? I asked my vet, and she told me the prices. I almost dropped dead right there!
M: Yeah. Unfortunately, most special pet stores sell them at fixed prices that are set by the companies that make them. You can usually find discounts of ten or fifteen percent for a lot of those stores, though.
W: Well, that’s not a huge help for something that’s two hundred dollars per year! Isn’t there any other way?
M: Well, you can order some medicines from websites that are based in other countries where the prices are lower.

This is the Lakewood Public Address System. This is not a test like the one we had last week. I repeat, this is not a test. The Western Hill Fire is spreading toward Lakewood much quicker than we had expected. Currently, we expect the fire to come within twenty miles of Lakewood by six o’clock this evening. We are therefore requiring all residents to leave this area immediately.
Springfield to the north, Point Cabina Station to the east, and Galveston to the south are all in the safe zone. It will take less than thirty minutes to drive to any of these towns. Take as many things as you can fit in your car, but do not delay. We have orders from the state police to make sure that the entire town of Lakewood is empty by five o’clock today. You have plenty of time to get all your family members, pets, and belongings together, so there is no need to panic. Stay calm, but get started as soon as possible.
