Three hundred years ago, there lived an Indian emperor called Shah Jahan. His wife was a beautiful and bright woman whom he loved greatly. Her title was Mumtazl Mahan: its shortened form Taj Mahal (泰姬陵) means “pride of the palace”. In the year 1630 this beloved wife of the emperor died. He was so brokenhearted that he thought of giving up his throne (皇位). Out of his love for his wife, he decided to build her the most beautiful tomb that had ever been seen.
He summoned (召集) the best artists and architects from India, Turkey, Persia and Arabia and finally, the design was complete. It took more than twenty thousand men working over a period of 18 years to build the Taj Mahal, one of the most beautiful buildings in the world.
The building itself stands on a marble (大理石) platform 29 meters square and 6-7 meters high. Towers rise from each of the four corners. The Taj itself towers another 61 meters into the air. It is an eight-sided building made of white marble.2-1-c-n-j-y
The emperor planned to build an identical tomb of black marble for himself on the other side of the river connected by a silver bridge. However his son put him into a prison in the palace before he could finish, and for the rest of his life, he could only look across river at the tomb of his beloved wife.21教育名师原创作品

It was a Wednesday afternoon when my assistant came into my office. She said that one of our customers had been waiting on the phone for a while to talk with me.21cnjy.com
I picked up the phone and the gentleman on the end of the phone said, “My name is Pat and I love your products, but that’s not why I’m calling. I’m calling because I just finished a book by VJ Smith titled: The Richest Man in Town.” He then said, “Mac, you’ve got to read this book, I guarantee (保证) you that you’re not going to like it... you’re going to love it.”
A few days later I bought this book. I closed my office door and read it, not-stop. When I finished, I just sat there with tears running down my face. Pat “nailed it” ... I didn’t like it. I loved it!
I then picked up the phone to call the author, VJ Smith. I just wanted to thank him for writing such a good book. VJ, who had self-published the book, then said, “You’re not going to believe this, Mac, but just recently, I told my wife that someday I’d like to work with a company like yours who could take my book to the rest of the world.”
I believe that some things are meant to be. The Richest Man in Town is a wonderful book. It’s a true story that will catch your heart and not let it go!

It’s important for travelers to understand cultural differences. I travel a lot. I always try to find out different “styles” of directions every time I ask “How can I get to the post office?”
Foreign tourists are often confused in Japan because most streets there don’t have names; in Japan, people use landmarks (地标) in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”
In the countryside of the American Midwest, there are not usually many landmarks. There are no mountains, so the land is very flat; in many places there are no town or buildings within miles. Instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distances. In Kansas or lows, for example, people will say, “Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.”
People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map; they measure (衡量) distance in time, not miles. “How far away is the post office?” you ask. “Oh,” they answer, “it’s about five minutes from here.” You say, “Yes, but how many miles away is it?” They don’t know.21*cnjy*com
It’s true that a person doesn’t know the answer to your question sometimes. What happens in such a situation? A New Yorker might say, “Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers “I don’t know.” People in Yucatan believe that “I don’t know” is impolite. They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A tourist can get very, very lost in Yucatan!
29. When a foreigner tourist asks a Japanese the way to the post office, he usually .
A. tell him some landmarks B describes the place carefully
C. shows him a map of the place D. tells him the names of the streets
30. Where do people measure distance in time?
A. Kansas. B. Japan. C. Los Angeles. B. New York.
31 Why does no one in Yucatan answer “I don’t know.” Because they think it is .
A. polite B. impolite C. funny D. cultural
32. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Japanese are always friendly to visitors.
B. People have similar understandings of politeness.
C. It’s useful for travelers to know how to ask the way properly.
D. It’s important for travelers to understand cultural differences.

It is often difficult for people to choose a roommate.
When I left for college, I was forced to live with a total stranger for the first time - I’m the only child in my family. I’d go to bed early for a class beginning at 8:00 a.m. and my roommate would turn on the lights, leave the door open and invite friends over after I’d be trying to sleep. After a month, I changed the room.
Over four years I managed to have six roommates in total. The one that was my least favorite was my old friend. This is common. Friends think that because they get along so well, sharing a room or an apartment should be OK. But the fact that they don’t share a room, or an apartment is part of the reason why they get along so well.【来源:21·世纪·教育·网】
I’ve often seen friendship end by the decision to become roommates. Two friends of mine were friends when they went into college and shared a room but hardly spoke to each other by the end of the school year. My advice: Move out and make a new friend.
33. According to Paragraph 2, why did the writer move out?
A. Because he wanted to live with an old friend.
B. Because his roommate didn’t like living with him.21*cnjy*com
C. Because he was not allowed to invite his friends over.
D. Because his sleep was seriously affected by his roommate’s actions.
34. The writer probably thinks that it is NOT a good idea to .
A. live with a stranger in college
B. share a room with a friend in college
C. go to sleep early at night in college
D. keep in touch with old friends in college
35. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Choosing a roommate B. Going to college.
C. Moving out. D. Making new friends

Be responsible for yourself
Sometimes you may want to blame others for your failure to get ahead. In fact, when you say someone or something outside of yourself is stopping you from making success, you’re giving away your own power. 37 www-2-1-cnjy-com
Write a plan
It is very difficult to try to get what you want without a good plan, it is just like trying to drive through strange roads to a city far away. 38 Without this “map”, you may waste your time, money and also your energy; while with the “map” you’ll enjoy the “trip” and get what you want in the shortest possible time.【出处:21教育名师】
Be willing to pay the price
39 So you must be ready to work hard — even harder than you have ever done. If you are not willing to pay the price, you won’t get anything valuable.
40
It seems to us that everyone knows this. But it is easier said than done. When you are doing something, you must tell yourself again and again: Giving up is worse than failure because failure can be the mother of success, but giving up means the death of hope.
A. A good plan is like a map to you.
B. Never give up.
C. Nothing is easy to get.
D. Some people achieve success much later in life.
E. Here are some keys to success that they give.
F. Someone else’s opinion of you doesn’t have to become your reality.
G. You’re saying, “You have more control over my life than I do.”
