Katie always felt there had to be something more to life than just partying, buying clothes and driving a cool car. She finally discovered what she was missing out on when she traveled halfway around the world to help poor kids.
When she was 14,she discovered a club at school called Operation Smile,an organization that supports free operation for facially deformed kids in developing countries. At that time, she joined Operation Smile just to satisfy her school's community service requirement.【来源:21·世纪·教育·网】
After working with Operation Smile for a while, she learned different countries have different deformities(畸形).The more she learned about what affects kids around the world, the more she wanted to go abroad with Operation Smile.
At 15,she was chosen to go abroad. She was so happy—even though she didn't realize what she was getting herself into. Before her trip, she attended a weekend “mission training”. That's when she was told she'd be going to the Philippines. Although she was excited, one night during training, she broke down in tears. She didn't know if she was prepared to see all these unfortunate kids. She was put to work three days after her arrival in the Philippines. Her first day was at the hospital, where she met those kids waiting for operation, and they were running around and happy, it seemed normal. Her job was to play with the kids before their operation to help them feel more at ease. She also went to nearby schools to hand out toothbrushes and teach students how to brush their teeth.【版权所有:21教育】
When their operation was over, the kids were always overjoyed, but their parents were blown away. Sometimes they couldn't even recognize their kids because their appearances had improved so much. They'd cry and hug the doctors and nurses and give them presents—they were so grateful.21*cnjy*com

Modern zoos are different from those built fifty years ago. At that time zoos were places where people could go to see animals from many parts of the world. Animals lived in cages with iron bars. Although the zoo keepers took good care of them, many of the animals did not feel conformable, and they often fell ill.
In modern zoos, people can see animals in more natural conditions. Animals are given more freedom in larger places so that they can live as they would in nature. Even the appearance of zoos has changed. There are trees and grass in cages, and water flows through the places the animals live in. There are few bars; instead, there is often a deep ditch, filled with water, which surrounds a space where several sorts of animals live together as they would naturally. In an American zoo, the visitor can walk through a huge special cage that is filled with trees, some small animals and many birds and large enough for the birds to live naturally. In a zoo in New York, with the use of special night light, people can observe certain animals that are active only at night, when most zoos are closed. Some zoos have special places for visitors to watch animals that live in the desert or under water.
Modern zoos not only show animals to visitors, but also keep and save rare animals. For this reason, fifty years from now, the grandchildren of today's visitors will still be able to enjoy watching these animals.
9.It seems that ________ is something most important for animals.
A.eating good food
B.living in cages
C.living with other animals
D.living in natural conditions
10.In modern zoos ________.
A.different kinds of animals are kept separately
B.animals are no longer taken good care of
C.animals have more freedom
D.visitors can walk wherever they like

A.walk through huge special cages to watch all sorts of animals
B.see animals which live in special conditions
C.during the day observe animals that are active at night
D.watch all the rare animals that may not be seen in the future
12.The main idea of the passage is that ________.
A.zoos are now places where animals can live naturally
B.zoos are places where people can see animals from all over the world
C.there should be old and modern zoos alike
D.rare animals may soon die out
