On April 22, people around the world well celebrate Earth Day. But kids can help the Earth all year round. Here are a few kid heroes and their creative projects to protect the planet. Accidental activists
In 2015, Alex Weber went for a dive in the cold waters near Carmel Beach, California. She was surprised to find thousands of golf balls on the ocean floor. Alex asked her friend and fellow diver Jack Johnston to help collect them. They are harmful to sea creatures that mistake them for food. Since their first dive, the two have removed 12000 balls from the ocean. They also created the Plastic Pick-Up, an organization that warns people of ocean pollution. “Some golfers have no idea this is happening , Jack said , “so it’s about raising awareness.”
Bird-watcher
Desmond Dessi Sieburth, 14, fell in love with birds when he made his first bird feeder as a Boy Scout, six years ago. Now he runs his own program called Protecting Our Birds.
The Los Angeles, California, native studies birds and has a website that teaches people about how to help them. He also builds bird boxes. Dessi has interviewed biologists, written articles, and spoken to local branches of the Audubon Society, an organization devoted to conserving and restoring natural ecosystems. “Studying birds is actually very important to protecting them,” Dessi said, “In order to protect a species, we have to learn and really know about it” .
Ivary-trade fighters
Willow and Isabella Poschman, 11, live in Aspen, Colorado. But they want to help the African elephant. After learning that the animals are hunted for their ivory tusks (象牙), the twins founded a non-profit, Kids Saving Elephants. They sell handmade elephant greeting cards and donate (捐赠) the profits. The United States has more tornadoes than any other country in the world. In a normal year there are 800 to 1000 tornadoes. Most happen in the middle part of the country. Tornadoes form when warm and cool air meet. In the Midwest, the warm air from the Gulf of Mexico often meets the cold air from Canada.
The usual tornado season is March through May. Tornadoes form most often in the afternoon and early evening. There is often no warning of a tornado. People who live in the Midwest know the signs of tornado activity. The sky becomes dark, often a greenish color. Dark clouds appear in the sky and there is often large hail. Suddenly, there is a loud sound, like a train or a jet plane. Sometimes, two, three, five, ten or more tornadoes can form over large area.
This type of tornado activity hit Oklahoma and Kansas in May 1999. The day was stormy, with heavy thunderstorms in the afternoon. As the storms continued, tornadoes began to form. Dozens of tornadoes hit towns and neighborhoods in Oklahoma, then in Kansas. Some stayed on the ground for several hours, destroying everything they touched. The tornadoes killed 43 people and injured 600 others. They destroyed thousands of homes and businesses. In some areas, not one home stood. In other areas, the tornadoes destroyed every home on the left side of the street, but didn’t touch any homes on the right side. The tornadoes lifted people and cars into the air and then threw them back down to earth. So it is important to know where to hide and how to protect yourself in the face of a tornado.

Michaela Clovis is a neighbor of mine. Last year, one of her classmates made fun of her hair. “She said it doesn’t look right and doesn’t match my skin,” said Michaela. Michaela is Irish, German, Native American, and African American. She has pale skin and reddish yellow hair, but she is not white.
Soon, a few classmates joined the teasing. Michaela said she felt “small and alone”. But she stopped the teasing without getting angry. Here is how she did it.
First, Michaela talked to her parents. Her mother, Donna, told Michaela’s teacher and also suggested that Michaela not face the teasing alone. Next, Donna told Michaela about the different people in her family, and their love for each other. She taught her that people of all races are beautiful.
“Everyone’s skin or hair color is beautiful and you have to believe that for yourself. You have to learn to be confident and comfortable in your own skin and hair. Forget what your classmates say, as it is just a period most kids go through picking on others because they are different ! Just don’t let it get to you and you will be okay! Be proud of who you are and love yourself for being a kind and generous human being,” Michaela’s mother said.21-cnjy*com
This made Michaela feel better. After that, Michaela was more confident. The next time she was teased, Michaela said, “I know that I’m proud of it”. She stuck to that answer until the teasing finally ended.

B. She asked the author for advice

D. Teasing is popular among classmates

Do you think horseback riding is easy? Well, you are wrong. Horseback riding is one of the most challenging sports in the world today.
As you know, a horse has the instinct to run away when afraid. When he becomes puzzled, he becomes afraid. When your silent communication is confusing, he does not ask you to repeat what you have said. Instead, he runs forward, he jumps to the side, he kicks out, or he freezes in place. Most of the time, however, you won’t know your communication is confusing until it is too late. When he runs forward, you will fall back. When he jumps to side, you will fall the other way. When he kicks out or freezes in place, you will fly over his head.
If you want to be good at horseback riding, you must practice. Being ridden does not come naturally to horses. They have to be trained. For example, to ask them to go forward, you usually tap them with your heels. But, if you get on untrained horses, they won’t know that a tap means go. Instead, they will most likely run around like a wild animal out of fear.
Contrary to popular belief, horseback riding does take skill. If you believe horseback riding doesn’t take skill, you most likely have only ridden at a farm that provides a well-trained horse. To me, that is not actual riding. And although it may seem easy to you, you were not the person to teach that horse that a saddle is not frightening. You were not the person to fall off that same horse at the beginning of his training. When horses are first taught to be ridden, all they do is run, kick out, and rear, which is the act of standing on their back legs only.
32. What does the underlined word “confusing” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Embarrassing B. Interesting
C. Exciting D. Puzzling
33. In paragraph 3, the author uses the example to ________.
A. prove communication is important in horseback riding
B. prove it is hard to master horseback riding skills2-1-c-n-j-y
C. show horses for horseback riding need training
D. show some horses can’t be trained
34. According to the last paragraph, most people believe that ________.
A. training a horse is easy
B. horseback riding is interesting
C. horseback riding doesn’t take skill
D. riding a well-trained horse isn’t actual riding
35. The text is most probably taken from ________.
A. a newspaper report B. a biology textbook

Recently haze pollution has happened in many cities of China. It’s one of the most dangerous weather conditions. Many accidents have occurred due to low visibility caused by haze. What’s worse, it also affects our health. If breathing in haze, people may feel uncomfortable and get ill.
The reason for haze is air pollution. It results from waste gases released from cars, factories or construction sites. In view of the above, we need to protect ourselves from haze pollution. Firs of all, in case of haze pollution, we shouldn’t open the windows or take exercise before the sun rises and after sunset. Besides, we’d better wear masks when we go outside. What’s more, we should eat more fruit, from which we can get enough vitamins to build up resistance do disease.
