Derek Rabelo is not the only surfer to conquer Hawaii’ s famous Pipeline big wave break, but while all others use their sight to do it, this young professional surfer must rely only on his other senses. That’s because he is completely blind.
When Derek was born, over 24 years ago, he got his name from Derek Ho, the first Hawaiian surfing world champion. A surfing enthusiast himself, Ernesto dreamed that his son would share the talent of his uncle, a professional surfer. Unfortunately, Derek was born completely blind, but this didn’t stop his family from believing that he could do anything he wanted, even if that meant becoming a surfer.
At age 2, Derek received a bodyboard and the beaches of Guarapari, Brazil, became his backyard. He was always comfortable in the water and surfing was in his blood, but he didn’t actually try riding a wave until he turned 17, when his father bought him a surfboard. His father taught him the basics and encouraged him to keep practicing, but after successfully standing up on the surfboard, Derek knew he needed to become much better if he was going to achieve Ernesto’s dream and become a professional surfer. So he joined the Praia do Moroo surf school, where he studied under coach Fabio Maru.
Standing up on a surfboard and conquering small waves is one thing, while gathering the courage to take on Hawaii’s board-breaking Pipeline is another. But that’s exactly what Derek Rabelo set out to do just months after learning how to surf. Everyone told him it was too dangerous, but he felt he could do it. And he did, earning the praise of famous professional surfers like Kelly Slater and Mick Fanning. Now 24, Rabelo has been surfing the Pipeline every winter since.
25. What does the first paragraph tell us?

B. Nobody has ever conquered Hawaii’s big wave break.
C. Derek Rabelo is the only blind professional surfer to conquer Hawaii’s big wave break.
D. Derek Rabelo dreams to conquer Hawaii’s big wave break.
26. How did Ernesto behave after Derek was born?

B. He never lost confidence in him.
C. He sent him to a surfing champion.
D. He started his own interest in surfing.
27. After Derek was able to stand up on the surfboard, he ________.
A. began to try riding a wave
B. was no longer afraid of water
C. realized he still had a long way to go
D. knew his father’s dream had come true
28. Which of the following words can best describe Derek according to the last paragraph?
A. Brave and confident. B. Skillful but proud.
C. Thoughtful and modest. D. Courageous but stubborn.
C
“Indeed,” George Washington wrote in his diary in 1785, “some kind of fly, or bug, had begun to eat the leaves before I left home.” But the father of America was not the father of bug. When Washington wrote that, Englishmen had been referring to insects (昆虫) as bugs for more than a century, and Americans had already created lightning-bug(萤火虫). But the English were soon to stop using the bugs in their language, leaving it to the Americans to call a bug a bug in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
The American bug could also be a person, referring to someone who was crazy about a particular activity. Although fan became the usual term, sports fans used to be called racing bugs, baseball bugs, and the like.21*教*育*名*师
Or the bug could be a small machine or object, for example, a bug-shaped car. The bug could also be a burglar alarm, from which comes the expression to bug, that is, “to install (安装) an alarm”. Now it means a small piece of equipment that people use for listening secretly to others’ conversation. Since the 1840s, to bug has long meant “to cheat”, and since the 1940s it has been annoying.
We also know the bug as a flaw in a computer program or other design. That meaning dates back to the time of Thomas Edison. In 1878 he explained bugs as “little problems and difficulties” that required months of study and labor to overcome in developing a successful product. In 1889 it was recorded that Edison “had been up the two previous nights discovering ‘a bug’ in his invented record player.”
29. We learn from paragraph 1 that_______.
A. Americans had difficulty in learning to use the word bug
B. George Washington was the first person to call an insect a bug
C. The word bug was still popularly used in England in the 19th century
D. Both English men and Americans used the word bug in the 18th century
30. What does the word “flaw” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Fault. B. Explanation. C. Source. D. Finding.
31. The passage is mainly concerned with ________.
A. the misunderstanding of the word bug
B. the development of the word bug
C. the public views of the word bug
D. the special meanings of the word bug
D
How to deal with waste has been a problem since humans started producing it. As more and more people choose to live close together in cities, the waste-disposal (处理) problem becomes increasingly difficult.
During the eighteenth century, it was usual for several neighboring towns to get together to select a faraway spot as a dump site. Residents or trash haulers (垃圾拖运者) would transport household rubbish, rotted wood, and old possessions to the site. Some of the trash was burned and the rest was buried. The unpleasant sights and smells caused no problem because nobody lived close by.
Factories, mills, and other industrial sites also had waste to be disposed of . Those located on rivers often just dumped (倾倒) the unwanted remains into the water. Others built huge burners with chimneys to deal with the problem.
Several facts make these choices unacceptable to modern society. The first problem is space. Dumps, which are now called landfills, are most needed in heavily populated areas. Such areas rarely have empty land suitable for this purpose. Property is either too expensive or too close to residential (住宅区的) neighborhoods. Long-distance trash hauling has been a common practice, but once farm areas are refusing to accept rubbish from elsewhere, cheap land within trucking distance of major city areas is almost nonexistent .
Awareness of pollution dangers has led to more strict rules of waste disposal. Pollution of rivers, ground water, land and air is a price people can no longer pay to get rid of waste. The amount of waste, however, continues to grow.
Recycling efforts have become commonplace, and many towns require their people to take part. Even the most efficient recycling programs, however, can hope to deal with only about 50 percent of a city’s reusable waste.
32. The most suitable title for this passage would be .2·1·c·n·j·y
A. Places for Disposing Waste B. Waste Disposal Problem
C. Ways of Getting Rid of Waste D. Waste Pollution Dangers
33. During the 18th century, people disposed their waste in many ways EXCEPT for .
A. recycling it B. burying it
C. burning it D. throwing it into rivers
34. What can be inferred from the fourth paragraph?
A. Farm areas don’t accept waste from the city in modern society.
B. There is cheap land to bury waste in modern society.
C. Ways to deal with waste in modern society stay the same.
D. It is not difficult to find space to bury waste in modern society.
35. The main purpose of writing this article is to .
A. tell people a better way to get rid of the waste
B. warn people of the pollution dangers we are facing
C. call on people to take part in recycling programs
D. draw people’s attention to waste management

In my opinion, for the benefit of the public, it is worthwhile to sacrifice part of personal convenience. However, I think it will be better if that government provide more means of public transportation for citizens . (104 words)

M: Not really. But I do sometimes go abroad to report on overseas sports events.
W: What an exciting job! I wish I could be more like you.
M: Why not?

W: What a cold day! The weatherman says there will be a snowstorm today. You’d better wear warm clothes, dear.
M: I don’t believe the weatherman anymore. Last week he said there would be clear skies but it rained all week.
W: All right. Go ahead and catch cold. You can see that it’s overcast. In the winter, that always means that it’s going to snow.
M: It doesn’t make any difference. Felix is driving me to the office. I don’t have to go outside.
W: But you may go out for lunch.
M: By that time, this storm will have blown over. Look! It’s partly sunny already.
W: No, it’s partly cloudy. Here are your overcoat and boots.
M: Thank you. And here’s Felix. See you tonight.

W: So, what are you going to do this summer?
M: Well, I’m probably going on holiday with my parents, but I really hope I can get a summer job in a market. What about you?
W: I’m going to Scotland for the summer.
M: For the whole summer?
W: Yes. I’m going to work in the mountains with my best friend.
M: Really? That sounds great!
W: Yes. The work won’t be very interesting. It’ll be mostly cooking, cleaning and working on reception and selling drinks. But our hours are eight till ten in the morning and six till nine in the evening. So we’ll have plenty of time during the day to go for a walk in the open air.
M: I wish I could get a job like that. How did you find out about it?www.21-cn-jy.com
W: I read about it in a magazine called Summer Work Round Britain. It tells you about all kinds of different jobs in different places. You can work on farms picking fruits, or at hotels near the sea. You can even get work at music festivals.

W: Hello, I’m Rachel Joyce. I’m so happy to be here today at the Claremont Library. I’ve traveled all the way from England, and it’s truly wonderful to visit the United States! This is the first stop on my book tour. I’m off to Australia next! Before I take any questions, let me tell you a bit about myself. My new novel, The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy, was published in 2014. The book is a companion to my first novel, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, which follows a man named Harold Fry as he goes in search of his old friend, Queenie Hennessy, in hopes of saying goodbye before she dies. The novel was published in 2012. It was almost chosen for the Commonwealth Book Prize and the Man Booker Prize. The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy is Queenie’s side of the story as she waits for Harold. I’ve also written many radio plays for BBC Radio Four, and in 2007, I won the Tinniswood Award for my radio play To Be a Pilgrim. I have also won the UK National Book Award for New Writer of the Year. Now, I’ll take questions from the audience.
