大象是现存世界上最大的陆地栖息群居性哺乳动物，通常以家族为单位活动。大象的皮层很厚，但皮层褶皱间的皮肤很薄，因此常用泥土浴的方式防止蚊虫叮咬。象牙是防御敌人的重要武器。
大象的祖先在几千万年前就出现在地球上。大象家族曾是地球上最占优势的动物类群之一，目前已发现400余种化石。但由于历史上气候和人为原因，导致这个族群的种类越来越少。目前地球上大象仅剩下2属3种：亚洲象、非洲草原象、非洲森林象，且它们也正受到严重的威胁。 [1]
