Chris is not a traditional explorer -- he usually works in an office for a large organization. However, Chris' job can be just as exciting and dangerous as being an explorer.
Chris works for MSF, an organization also known as Doctors Without Borders. Since 1971, MSF has sent trained doctors all over the world to help people who have suffered from disasters(遭受灾难), such as wars and illnesses. Chris is a doctor from France who has traveled to many places to organize programs that help people.
At the moment, over 27,000 trained doctors have taken part in MSF projects. The organization received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999. All kinds of doctors can volunteer for MSF. They need to be ready to go almost anywhere in the world and, of course, they should face difficulties. Most of MSF's work is in Africa. When MSF chooses a doctor for a task, they have to go for at least six months. When doctors have completed a few tasks, they might be sent on an emergency(紧急的) task following a disaster, such as an earthquake.
But why would doctors leave a comfortable life and a good pay to join MSF? According to Chris, the experience they have is a great help in their life. What's more, just like the explorers of the past, they need to keep an open mind and learn to get on well with the people they meet. One thing that they can say at the end of any task is that they have made a real difference to people's lives.
( )49. Why would doctors like to join MSF?.
A. Because they can get a good pay. B. Because they can help others and get experience.
C. Because they can travel abroad with their families. D. Because they can have a comfortable life.
( )50. As a volunteer doctor for MSF, he or she should ___..
A. have been sent on an emergency task B. be ready to work for a task for at least half a year
C. have worked in Africa for six months D. have suffered from wars, illnesses or other disasters
( )51. What is the main idea of this passage?.
A. MSF offers medical help to people who have suffered from disasters.
B. Chris is a doctor who has organized programs to help people.
C. MSF received the Nobel Peace Prize for helping poor countries.
D. Volunteer doctors make a real difference to their own lives in MSF

The first time I ever really noticed a disabled person, I was studying in the third grade. I saw some disabled people before, but I never really knew or cared about what those persons go through(经历 ).
When a new student arrived in my third grade class, I thought it would just be a common student, but this student was different. His name was Derek and he had autism(孤独症). He sometimes had random outbursts(随意发作) during class and we would stand there, doing nothing because we didn't know why he was doing that. When he sat down at desk, we would try to get away from him. After class, we would play jokes on each other, imitating(模仿) Derek, and laughing about it.
Then one day, Derek's mom came to our class and talked with us. She told us that Derek wasn't just having random outbursts--he was trying to communicate. Then she chose a volunteer and filled that person's mouth with soft sweets. When we found the volunteer had great trouble in trying to speak, the mother explained that was what Derek was going through every day. We all understood her meaning.
After this talk, no one tried to make fun of Derek or run away from him. We accepted his outbursts in class and he became one of our friends. Having a class with Derek has taught me to have an open mind to those who are different from us. My experience in having an autistic classmate has provided me with a good lesson.
Now whenever I meet a family with a child who's behaving differently, I always remember what I have learned in my third grade clams and go up to him or her.

Everybody makes decisions in daily life. They can be as important as what you will do in the future or as simple as what you will eat for breakfast. Any decision could be the turning point of your life.
I made an important decision when I was in Junior 3.
Before I made that decision I was one of the boys who tried too hard to act as an adult. I didn’t know that only kids want to show themselves as adults.
I didn’t listen to my parents and teachers, and my grades became poor. Then came the high school entrance exam.21*cnjy*com
At the turning point of my life, my mom wanted to have a conversation with me. I wanted to turn it down but when I looked at her eyes, I felt I couldn’t refuse. Instead of asking me to study hard, to my surprise, Mom just asked what I wanted to do in the future. Without thinking too much, I just said I would like to study hard.
Mom smiled and asked again: “I asked: what do you WANT to do?”
I never seriously thought about the question. So, I kept silent.
“Whether you want to go on studying or enter the society,” she went on, “it is your own decision. Your life ought to be decided by you, not by anyone else, including me. ” After saying that, she had tears in her eyes.
For the first time in my life I was asked to make my own decision. I sat in my chair and thought about myself, my life and what kind of person I wanted to become.www.21-cn-jy.com
It took me what seemed to be ages to make the biggest decision so far in my life—I wanted to be a man who makes a difference in the world. To achieve that, I needed to study hard.
The path to my future became clear to me. I didn’t act rebelliously(叛逆地) any more. With passion (激情) in my heart, I studied hard.
Now, I’m 17 and I’m in one of the best schools in my city, in one of the best classes at the school and I am one of the best students in the class.
Thanks to that decision, I have become what I am today.
( )57. What was the writer like before the decision?.
A. He was one of the top students in his class.
B. He tried too hard not to act as an adult.
C. He did what his teachers and his parents asked him to do.
D. His grades became poor.
( )58. How did the writer make the decision?.
A. It was easy for him to make the decision. B. It was his mother that made the decision for him.
C. It was his second time to make the decision. D. He made the decision seriously.
( )59. Why did the writer make the decision?.
A. Because his teacher talked with him patiently.
B. Because his mother asked him to study hard as usual.
C. Because he didn’t want to act rebelliously any more.
D. Because his father asked him to think about his future by himself.
( )60. Which of the following is TRUE?.
A. At the turning point of his life, the writer wanted to have a conversation with his mother.
B. After hearing his mother’s words, the writer had tears in his eyes.
C. The writer made the decision that he should work hard.
D. It took the writer several years to make the decision.

Hospitals have not always been clean, quiet places. Long ago they were dirty and overcrowded. Nurses were never taught how to look after their patients and many people died. This is the story of Florence Nightingale, who changed all this.2-1-c-n-j-y
Florence was born in 1820. Growing up, she was a quiet and serious young girl. She spent a lot of time playing with her dolls. She would pretend that the dolls were sick and she was their nurse. People would bring sick or hurt animals to her to look after. She often went with her mother to visit the poor people. They took food and medicine to the sick. It was these visits that first gave her the idea of becoming a nurse.
Her chance came in 1854 when Britain went to war with Russia. Florence was asked to take a group of nurses to look after the sick and wounded soldiers. The hospitals were dirty, and there was not enough medicine. Florence and her team cleaned the hospital rooms and beds. They made sure that the bandages were clean and that the soldiers got enough medicine. Florence and her team worked hard. At night she would go from room to room checking on the patients. There was no electricity so she would carry an oil lamp with her to see where she was going. She often stayed to talk to the patients, especially if she could see that they were scared or dying.
After the war, Florence opened a school to teach nurses to look after their patients properly. She never really got better from the illness that she had in the war and she died in 1910.
It is thanks to Florence Nightingale that we receive the proper care in hospitals today.
