As I was leaving the grocery store yesterday, I noticed an old man walking along the road, struggling with two sacks of food,so I pulled up near him and put the window down to ask if he needed a ride. I think he was a bit skeptical since few people go out of their way to do these sorts of things, but he did accept.
After he got settled in the car, my husband and I introduced ourselves, but he was very quiet and reluctant to give his name. During the drive, we tried to make him more comfortable with some small talks. We talked about the weather and the like. His home was more than two miles away on rough streets. It would have been a difficult walk for anyone, let alone an old man carrying bags.
When we pulled up outside his door, the first thing he asked was, “How much money do you want?” My husband and I both answered, “Nothing, we just wanted to help”. The shock and relief on this man's face made us sad, because we should be able to live in a world where it isn't shocking to have someone help you out of the goodness of their heart without expecting something in return. After realizing we truly didn't want anything, he kept thanking us over and over.
My only words to him were, “Sir, I hope this helped you out and have a good week.” This simple act of kindness, just seeing an old person walking and then doing something about it, is the type of kindness that anyone can do. It doesn't cost a cent. Just be aware of the world happening around you. There is always someone who needs something — holding a door, carrying a bag ...the opportunities are endless. And I truly hope this may be a beginning for this man to practice acts of kindness — just because it happened to him.
24. When the author saw the old man at first, she decided to ______.
A. give him a lift B. ask him for directions
C. help him carry his bags D. take him home for money
25. Why was the old man a bit skeptical about the writer's offer of help?
A. Because he had been cheated many times before.
B. Because people rarely behave so nicely nowadays.
C. Because he had always been a careful person.
D. Because the writer and her husband didn't look like good people.
26. We can infer from Paragraph 2 that ______.
A. the old man introduced himself first
B. the old man was a very easygoing person
C. the old man didn't like to talk about weather
D. the writer and her husband were very caring
27. According to the passage, the writer ______.
A. called on readers to help those in need of help
B. thought everyone should care for the elderly
C. said nothing to the old man as she drove away
D. hoped that the old man could help her next time

Bridge of Hope School is a private school. It was set up in Kalangala about two years ago. Unlike government schools, which have very large classes of 90 children, many of whom do not want to learn, Bridge has small classes, so pupils get a great deal of attention. Small classes are good for teaching, but the school is always having difficulty with money since private schools are dependent on parents paying on time.
The school has five primary classes and three nursery classes. As the children progress through the school they will add another class next year. The total number of children in the primary classes is about 50. The parents of Bridge children are often higher earners than those that attend government schools. They want their children to have the best education available.
The school is not yet finished. The classrooms have no windows or doors. But it is very formal and insists on children wearing uniforms. Discipline is strict and the children are well-behaved. Only English can be spoken and not the local language. Although English is the national language and the language of education, government schools teach in their own language for the first three years.
School starts at 7 a.m. and the children have to be on time. Classes are formal, but children have to copy lots of things from the blackboard, because there are few textbooks, sometimes only one for the teacher to use. Class work is heavy and the children have tests every week. They also study during the holiday.
28. What can we learn about government schools?
A. The classes consist of a large number of students.
B. Teachers don’t speak English in class.
C. Children always work very hard.
D. It is free for children to attend them.
29. Parents send their children to Bridge of Hope School because they _______.
A. think the school environment is better there
B. hope their children can get the best education
C. want their children to be different
D. have no time to take care of their children
30. Which of the following is TRUE about Bridge of Hope School according to the text?
A. Children can wear what they like there.
B. Textbooks are not needed.
C. Lessons are given in the local language there.
D. Life there is not easy for children.
31. The purpose of the writer in writing this passage is to ________.
A. list differences between a private and a government school
B. introduce a private school — Bridge of Hope School in Kalangala
C. tell the history of the private schools in Kalangala
D. show education development in Kalangala

People who smoke could lose around one third of their daily memory, researchers say.
A study by a team at Northumbria University showed that smokers lost more of their memory when compared to non-smokers.
And the research also found that those who kicked the habit saw their ability to recollect information restored to almost the same level as non-smokers.
The study involved more than seventy 18-to-25-year-olds and included a tour of the university's campus. Those who took part were asked to recall small details, such as a list of songs played at a campus concert and tasks completed at various points—known as real world memory test. Smokers performed badly, remembering just 59 percent of tasks. But those who had given up smoking remembered 74 percent and those who had never smoked recalled 81 percent of tasks.
Dr.Tom Heffernan, who leads Northumbria University's Collaboration for Drug and Alcohol Research Group, said the findings would be useful in anti-smoking campaigns. He said“Given that there are up to 10 million smokers in the UK and as many as 45 million in the United States,it's important to understand the effects smoking has on everyday cognitive(认知的)fun_ction—of which prospective memory is an excellent example.”
“This is the first time that a study has set out to examine whether giving up smoking has an impact on memory. We already know that giving up smoking has huge health benefits for the body, but this study also shows how stopping smoking can have knock-on benefits for cognitive functions too.”
The research will now investigate the effects of passive smoking on memory, while Dr.Heffernan and Dr.Terence O'Neil will look into the effects of third-hand smoking—toxins(毒素)left on curtains and furniture.
32. What's the main idea of the passage?
A. Smoking does harm to health.
B. Smoking can affect one's memory.
C. Smokers are compared to non-smokers.
D. Smokers take a tour to the University's campus.
33. How did those who took part in the study perform when asked to recall small details?
A. Non-smokers could recall about half of them.
B. Smokers did the worst among the participants.
C. Smokers could recall nothing at all.
D. Those who gave up smoking did best.
34.According to Dr.Tom Heffernan,the findings____________.
A. would be really a surprise to the public
B. would be nothing new to the researchers
C. would contribute to fighting against smoking
D. would be used in real world memory test
35. What does the underlined word “impact” in the last but one paragraph most probably mean?
A. order B. effect C. expression D. impression

Dear Tom,
I'm glad to receive your email. I'm writing to tell you something about the changes in my hometown.
In the past, the only approach to my village was a narrow mountain road, but now, a wide blacktop has been built. Most of the houses which were old and damaged were built in the last century. Now lines of nice buildings have been built to take their place. There is also a small river in front of my village, which was badly polluted. At present the pollution is under control and a beautiful water park has been built there. It has become a popular entertainment place for the villagers.
I'm looking forward to your visit to my hometown.
Yours,
Li_Hua
