1 When I was thirteen years old, a girl gave
me an important gift. It was a smile.
2 It was the early autumn of my first year at
a new school. No one knew me. I was very
lonely, and afraid to make friends with
anyone.
Every time I heard the other students
talking and laughing, I felt even more
lonely. I could not talk to anyone about
my problem, and I did not want my
parents to worry about me.
4 One day, my classmates are talking with
their friends, but I sat in silence. At that
moment, a girl entered the classroom. I
did not know who she was. She passed
me and then turned back. She looked at
me and, without a word, smiled.
5 Suddenly, I felt the touch of something
bright and friendly. It made me feel
happy, lively and warm. It was like a
hidden treasure.
6 That smile changed my life. I started to talk with the other students. Day by Day, I learnt to trust people, and they included me in their circle of friends. The girl with the bright smile has become my best friend now, and we stick together like glue.
One day, I asked her why she smiled at me
that day. She said she could not remember!
8 Now I believe that the world is what you
think it is. If you think you are lonely, you
might always be alone. My suggestion is:
Smile at the world and it will smile back.

1.I was very lonely, and afraid to make friends with anyone.
我感到很孤独，不敢与任何人交朋友。
lonely “寂寞” “孤独”，因缺少朋友、友谊而产生的一种悲伤和忧郁的感 情;
alone只是陈述一个事实，表示 “独自的” “单独的”（没有其他人在场）
eg. ——Do you feel lonely when you are alone at home
——No, I always have lots of thing to do.
2. be afraid to do 与 be afraid of doing
be afraid to do:不敢/胆怯去做某事，主观上的原因不做， “怕”；
be afraid of doing:担心出现doing的状况、结果doing 是客观上造成的, 意为“生怕，恐怕”。
eg. She was afraid to step further in grass because
she was afraid of being bitten by a snake.
她生怕被蛇咬着，而不敢在草丛中再走一步。
3. Every time I heard the other students talking and laughing, I felt even more lonely.
每次听到其他同学有说有笑，我觉得自己更加孤单了。
every time在本句中引导一个状语从句，意思是“每次……”。Every time也可以换成each time。
eg. Every/each time I ask you to do something, you always say you are too busy.
每次我让你做点儿什么，你总是说太忙。
Don’t stop every time you come to a word or phrase you don’t know.
不要每碰到一个你不认识的单词或短语就停下来。
4.the other后接可数名词复数，意为“其余的……”。any other后接可数名词单数为同义表达，意为“其他任何一个……”。
eg. Jack studies harder than any other student in our school.
=Jack studies harder than the other students in our school.
在我们学校杰克学习最努力。
5. Day by day, I learnt to trust people, and they included me in their circle of friends.
我逐渐学会了信任他人，而他们也邀请我加入了他们的朋友圈。
day by day：一天天地，渐渐地
day after day：日复一日的
eg. He grew stronger day by day.
他渐渐长得更健壮了。
