“There’s a mother in PICU (儿童重症监护病房) who wants to talk about a kit she received.” the nurse told me. “Something about it made her cry.”
I’ve been a child-life specialist at the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital since 2000. I help families understand diagnoses and treatment plans and manage the ups and downs that come with caring for a sick child. Tough talks with parents are part of the job, it still makes me feel nervous.
The kits the nurse was talking about were something I had recently introduced to the hospital: Comfort Kits from Guideposts. They were supposed to make a child’s experience here easier, not upsetting.
When I came across the kits at a conference, I fell in love with them. A treasure box of items designed not only to entertain kids, but to comfort and inspire them. There’s a coloring book, a stress ball, a CD of relaxing music, a hairy star named Sparkle, a journal and much more. I really believed these kits would help kids. I wished I hadn’t been mistaken.
At the patient’s room in PICU I saw a little girl, sleeping soundly, surrounded by tubes and machines. My eyes met her mother’s. The kit was open on her lap and tears were running down her cheeks.
“I’m Shannon. I manage the Child Life Department.” I said. “I’m sorry if the kit upset you. It’s a new item…”
The mother shook her head. “This has been one of the worst days of my life. I felt so scared and alone. Then I was handed this box. I know it’s for my daughter, but it’s just the comfort I needed. I wanted to say thank you.”
With that I knew Comfort Kits belonged here. We’ve been using them for almost three years now. Each child who’s admitted to the hospital receives one. Every day I see kids coloring, journaling, playing with Sparkle.
But as this mom showed me Comfort Kits aren’t just for kids. The hope they bring, which can be in short supply in hospitals sometimes, is felt by the whole family.
24. The author introduced Comfort Kits to the hospital to_________.
A. relax nurses B. cure kids of diseases
C. comfort parents D. benefit sick kids
25. Why was the girl’s mother crying?
A. She couldn’t wake her kid. B. She felt alone and scared.
C. She was moved to tears. D. She worried about her kid’s illness.
26. Which of the following can replace the underlined sentence in the last paragraph?
A. There may be lack of hope in hospitals.
B. Kits are in great need in hospitals.
C. Parents are often in low spirits in hospitals.
D. Medical supplies are not enough in hospitals.
27. What’s the author’s attitude towards Comfort Kits?
A. Disappointed. B. Excited.
C. Nervous. D. Confident.

According to findings of a survey by Citi and Seventeen Magazine, nearly four out of five (almost 80 percent) college students work while attending college, with the average work load of 19 hours per week. But should college students work while at college? Many factors should be considered.
One benefit of working while in college is that it can help build your resume, regardless of whether the job is in your field, according to an article at Scholarships.com. "If you're lucky enough to find a job that closely relates to your major, you could get a leg up on the rest of your class once you graduate, because you'll have more experience in your chosen field," according to the article.
Perhaps the most compelling reason for working while earning a degree is the money. While it's unlikely to entirely finance your education through a part-time or full-time job, you can still make quite a dent(削减)in the college bill by working.
But some students prefer not to work while earning a degree so they can focus on getting the best grades. It's true that you'll have more time to stay at school if you don't work, provided you use that time wisely. If you feel like even 10-15 hours a week of work will hurt your grades, then perhaps you should not consider working.
Working a part-time or full-time job can take away time from social activities, according to a You University TV article. "Trying to balance a job and your college studies, and taking a job can cut down your time to hang out with friends," according to writer Dave Potts.
In addition to missing out on hanging out with your friends, working during college could prevent you from attending a number of campus events, such as movies on the lawn or football games. While you may be able to land a job that's flexible, it seems unlikely they'll let you choose your own schedule.
So should students work at college? The decision should be made on a case-by-case basis. Some students can also thrive in school while working, whereas others can't.
28. The author mentions the findings of a survey in Paragraph 1 to show ________.
A. college students are under great financial pressure
B. it's very common for college students to work part-time
C. it's quite easy for college students to find part-time work
D. college students have much spare time for part-time work
29. According to the article at Scholarships.com, students working at college can ________.
A. be able to choose work from more fields
B. have some money left when they graduate
C. know better about their majors than others
D. be more competitive in job hunting after graduate
30. According to Paragraph 6, what does working at college mean?
A. Missing a lot of fun at college. B. Having no friends at college.
C. Having a very busy schedule. D. Saving a lot of money.
31. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Why do students work at college? B. Is it wise to work while at college?
C. Is it wise to choose social life at college? D. What should students do at college?
D
Failure is probably the most exhausting experience a person ever has. There is nothing more tiring than not succeeding.
We experience this tiredness in two ways: as start-up fatigue (疲惫) and performance fatigue. In the former case, we keep putting off a task because it has either too boring or too difficult. And the longer we delay it, the more tired we feel. Such start-up fatigue is very real, even if not actually physical, not something in our muscles and bones. The solution is obvious though perhaps not easy to apply: always handle the most difficult job first.
Years ago, I was asked to write 102 essays on the great ideas of some famous authors. Applying my own rule, I determined to write them in alphabetical (按字母顺序), never letting myself leave out a tough idea. And I always started the day’s work with the difficult task of essay-writing. Experience proved that the rule works.
Performance fatigue is more difficult to handle. Though willing to get started, we cannot seem to do the job right. Its difficulties appear so great that, however hard we work, we fail again and again. In such a situation, I work as hard as I can — then let the unconscious take over.
When planning Encyclopaedia Britannica (《大英百科全书》), I had to create a table of contents based on the topics of its articles. Nothing like this had ever been done before, and day after day I kept coming up with solutions, but none of them worked. My fatigue became almost unbearable.
One day, mentally exhausted, I wrote down all the reasons why this problem could not be solved. I tried to convince myself that the trouble was with the problem itself, not with me. Then, I sat back in an easy chair and fell asleep.
An hour later, I woke up suddenly with the solution clearly in mind. In the weeks that followed, the solution which had come up in my unconscious mind provided correct at every step. Though I worked as hard as before, I felt no fatigue. Success was now as exciting as failure had been depressing.
Human beings, I believe, must try to succeed. Success, then, means never feeling tired.
32. People with start-up fatigue are most likely to .
A. delay tasks B. work hard
C. seek help D. accept failure
33. What does the author recommend doing to prevent start-up fatigue?
A. Writing essays in strict order. B. Building up physical strength.
C. Leaving out the toughest ideas. D. Dealing with the hardest task first.
34. On what occasion does a person probably suffer from performance fatigue?
A. Before starting a difficult task. B. When all the solutions fail.
C. If the job is rather boring. D. After finding a way out.
35. According to the author, the unconscious mind may help us ____________ .
A. ignore mental problems B. get some nice sleep
C. gain complete relief D. find the right solution

Dear schoolmates,
In order to enrich our life on campus and spread our traditional culture, we students’ union will organize a training activity for Chinese paper-cutting.
As we know, Paper cutting, with a history of more than 1,500 years, is one of China’s most popular traditional folk arts. It can be made to beautify our homes during the Spring Festival and wedding celebrations. The material for paper-cutting is usually red, which symbolizes health and prosperity, so Chinese paper cutting is very popular around the world and it is often given as a present.
Both international and native students are welcome to come. It will be held between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. this Friday in room 305, International Department Building. Don’t hesitate to join us.
